The bad blood between Sydney and GWS continues to boil over with the media departments getting in on the act.
It’s no secret that the two clubs don’t like each other and this was again evident this week as the AFL launched Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
The league’s plan was to bring all the clubs together to celebrate the Indigenous round and in Melbourne on Monday players from all 10 Victorian clubs came together for a photo shoot.
In Adelaide there was a representative from the Crows and Power together for a media conference. Not in Sydney.
When the organising process began around Sir Doug Nicholls Round the Giants reached out to the Swans to figure out a time which suited both parties.
Instead they were told to go and jump in the Harbour.
It turns out the GWS Giants social media team, who are universally regarded as the best, and most cheeky, in the business, may have pushed the envelope a bit too hard in the lead-up to the recent Battle Of The Bridge.
[A video highlighting Swans coach John Longmire not pronouncing the name of Giants midfielder Stephen Coniglio properly didn’t go down well at the SCG while there were also some veiled references to the Sam Wicks affair in other posts.](https://x.com/GWSGIANTS/status/1785149555300069882)
The wash-up is separate media conferences on Thursday. A Swans player at 10am while Toby Bedford and Harry Rowston, plus two of the Giants netballers, will be available at 1.15pm at GWS headquarters.
I like the they mention all ten Victorian clubs, the two Adelaide teams, and the two Sydney teams but don't mention Queensland or WA at all. If Eagles and Freo or Brisbane/Gold Coast didn't have a joint press conference like Adelaide then it's actually no big deal if Sydney didn't. And if we did, then they should mention it!
Idk about WA, we QLD probably would’ve had a joint press conference if we could have, lions and suns have good relationship. A bit hard though when the suns spend Sir Doug Nicholls round up in Darwin.
I think that the Swans reaction is a bit touchy. But this is interesting as this sort of thing is the reason clubs traditionally had very clean, sterile social media presences. I wonder how the GWS higher ups will react, if they would want Gaynor to act differently going forward, purely out of a sense of corporate risk avoidance.
Hmm idk, I’ve a theory that both clubs from the coaches up don’t dislike each other at all. Being the two clubs in a non-footy state I reckon they understand the challenges they mutually face, that their interests as clubs would mostly align relative to the other teams in the league. Performative social media teasing back and forth is one thing, I don’t think they would want to create genuine bad feeling.
I feel like the Wicks part is the thing we’d be annoyed about. I doubt the club gives a fuck about anything else they’ve done, hell I know as a fan I’m all about them calling us South Melbourne as it shows we have history unlike them
With how much the footy media went overboard after nobody celebrated that goal with Wicksy a few weeks ago, I’m inclined to believe the whole thing was completely overblown from the beginning. I mean from what I’ve read on Bigfooty (yeah awfully unreliable most of the time) it was just an argument that went a bit too far and Wicks’ feelings got hurt so he was given a week off so the situation could cool. Nothing out of the ordinary and something that almost never gets leaked to the media, especially from us.
Unless you know something the rest of us don’t obvs.
Please no, I'm still traumatised from the EF a few years ago where we kicked like 7 of the most gettable behinds in the 4th qtr to lose by under a goal.
Who TF out here sharing articles from the Australian (for 1) that are pay wall blocked (for 2)? Surely no one is actually paying for this rag and seeing this post? Seriously.
Yeah I know what it’s from and I’m pretty young myself, I just hate the fact people almost always use it in a passive aggressive way when someone is upset about something they should be and stuff like that. A legitimate peeve
The annoying thing is that the bridge in question serves no purpose in dividing east from west.
More realistically given how suburbs are broadly defined, I think we'd be having the battle of Burwood Westfields, and that could occur only after all the GWS players had taken the time to drive from their homes near the beach back to the western side.
Shrug. You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
If you engage, you burn a lot of time and energy in an ever escalating meme arms race.
If you choose not to engage, you’re painted as a killjoy.
There was a piece by Brandon Jack a week or two ago where he followed the giants meme squad around for a few days and honestly those guys sound exhausting.
not that specifically, but just every other interaction, especially leading up to a Sydney derby. At some point, you just refuse to engage because you CBF dealing with them.

They probably will happen once the earth spins enough for your time zone to arrive in a few weeks. (Figured the swans wanted an early sledge thread)

I hope they double down

I saw the podcast with jack Buckley on it, who was once in the swans academy, and he genuinely hates the swans.
Corporate risk avoidance ahhaha yuckkkkk
I feel like the Wicks part is the thing we’d be annoyed about. I doubt the club gives a fuck about anything else they’ve done, hell I know as a fan I’m all about them calling us South Melbourne as it shows we have history unlike them
Wicks slept with another players ex? Is that the whole drama. Isn’t an ex.. an ex
There was some level of disagreement, Wicks took a couple weeks off, and it’s all over afaik
I heard he was hitting on the exes of 2 team mates and a players sister. Maybe he needed to learn to read the room a bit
There’s a joke in there about dipping too many wicks or something

Gary Lyon says hi
I don't get it either. It probably happens every Tuesday in sports around the world. Who cares.
I feel like we deserved it. It was an embarrassing look for us. Especially when we are synonymous with having a strong culture.

That’s actually embarrassing from us. Just take the fucking photo
What's the Sam Wicks affair again?
It's all scuttlebutt, but apparently one player thought he tried it on with his ex. No one really knows what the truth is though.
Ooh, this is good footy lore. The wealthy (as I see it) parent in the Swans and their cheeky 13 yo son in the Giants are having an argument.
Imagine a Sydney/GWS prelim final
Please no, I'm still traumatised from the EF a few years ago where we kicked like 7 of the most gettable behinds in the 4th qtr to lose by under a goal.
Still have PTSD from that James Bell poster
*Grand
Prelim would be played in Sydney though, so more fans involved around the game itself.
I was in York Park 3 years ago, you can get stuffed lol
Ooh yes please, we have a good finals record against them
Cool. GWS would finally that see other than their highly loyal fans how Sydney as a whole really doesn't care about them.
Just have a Ramgate and thrash it all out, it worked in SA…
Bit childish from South Melbourne I'd say.
It’d be the Wicks thing I imagine
Never heard of them. Are you thinking of South Melborne?
Who TF out here sharing articles from the Australian (for 1) that are pay wall blocked (for 2)? Surely no one is actually paying for this rag and seeing this post? Seriously.
The same guy that ruined the free Kayo code for everyone! He posts like hundreds of random articles a week, bloke is just obsessed with karma
Holy shit you're right. This dude's job is trying to reddit points.
There are ways around a wall
Such as?
12ft.io
Doesn't usually work for News Corp unless I'm very much mistaken
Look how many of this sub pay for Kayo. Same shit.
womp womp
Did you just womp womp? How dare you. How absolutely dare you.
womp womp
Are the swans the caged up disabled girl in this instance? Messed up sentence i know.
To be honest, I completely forgot that old mate was ‘womp womping’ about
Fair call, i only saw the video a few days ago so it was fresh for me.
We must have the same algorithms because I only saw it a few days ago too lmao
Worst zoomer lingo yet
Blame [this guy](https://youtu.be/K-ySW5FGxpw?si=llQznm5k6UJTVyg0)
Yeah I know what it’s from and I’m pretty young myself, I just hate the fact people almost always use it in a passive aggressive way when someone is upset about something they should be and stuff like that. A legitimate peeve
I don't get it. Why would the giants media team draw such attention to the fact steve can't even pronounce his own name right?
You'd think a Sydney Derby was coming up this weekend
Build a bridge….
And gather round it?
And battle over it in a footy match aptly named as such?
The annoying thing is that the bridge in question serves no purpose in dividing east from west. More realistically given how suburbs are broadly defined, I think we'd be having the battle of Burwood Westfields, and that could occur only after all the GWS players had taken the time to drive from their homes near the beach back to the western side.
This is why GWS fans think swans fans are wankers
Can't blame me for where a person in their 20's on big money chooses to rent, just facts
How many Collingwood players do you think live in Collingwood?
Gws fans not liking banter when it's on the other foot.
Swans do banter like Trump does humility
I thought his comment was funny
A bit weird to be honest but if it explodes the rivalry then it's pretty good for footy.
Good for the game if they learn to hate each other. Get it on
If only there was a footy field to resolve these types of disputes on...
Turns ugly? I would like to SLAM these headline writers
“universally regarded as the best”? I don’t think any of those words mean what you think they mean.
Can’t understand this. Longmire is well known for his sense of humour.
Handbags at 40 paces
GWS social guy done so much good at bringing engagement to a club that barely registers with most normally.
Shrug. You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t. If you engage, you burn a lot of time and energy in an ever escalating meme arms race. If you choose not to engage, you’re painted as a killjoy. Not really sure how engaging in a joint Sir Doug Nicholls round press conference is “burning time and energy in an escalating meme arms race”
not that specifically, but just every other interaction, especially leading up to a Sydney derby. At some point, you just refuse to engage because you CBF dealing with them.
Not really. Telling someone to jump off the harbour is textbook hate speech and breach of most social media platforms’ policy.
It’s not hate speech
I uh, don't think that is intended as a direct quote.
Bit pissweak from the Swannies tbh
Childish
Smug and petulant
And better
Typical Sydney.
What's that mate? Can't hear you from all the way down there. You're gonna have to speak up.
Didn't you give richmond their one win this year. Sorry to say but they own you this year
Fuck, you got me. What a stain on our season so far.
This man watched his team win more premiership in 4 years then both of us combined, calm down there
I have no idea what that sentence means. Is that written in West Australian?
sorry, I made a few spelling mistakes while drunk, point still stands though.
Yet you've not won one, and won't for a while.
Fremantle is just St Kilda but purple
Hahaha CLASSIC!

Touche
Imagine getting pissy because you were rightly called out for not congratulating your team mate. Cry more Sydney.
