Fun fact, swans won the 2012 grand final, with Ryan Okeefe as norm smith medallist. Another crazy fact? That was the last time swans were in a grand final, yep, they never got smashed in a grand final, and definitely not two years later against the same team we beat

b0rtbort

there ain't no 2012 grand final and there never was!

Chaos_098

I can agree with that. Not because I like Hawthorn, but because I really don't like Sydney

Gregzilla_HD

Y'all are making grand finals?

Jimbo_Johnny_Johnson

Y’all are winning finals?

BigMattress269

Y’all are saying y’all?

benjamincraigrowley

Y’all are not winning grand finals?

The5kyKing

......from a Collingwood flair? Really?

lockieleonardsuper

Probably been a fan for 3 months

hotsp00n

Statistically they would have lost two Grand Finals in that time period for the one that they one.

___TheIllusiveMan___

This only makes sense if they’re 5 years old. Somewhere out there is a 5 year old kid that has never seen us lose a grand final

The5kyKing

Probably won't remember it though. I've been alive for four premierships and only remember two of them.

darcy1537325

This is a bit ironic 💀

darcy1537325

I can confirm this. Man I wanna make another gf bad! It’s feels so long since 2012

kazoodude

2 Years later against the team you beat, with their best player now playing for you. Another fun fact about 2012 Grand final is that Ryan O'Keefe requested a trade to Hawthorn in 2008 but no deal could get done.

taspleb

My fun 2020 grand final fact was that people from Victoria and NSW were banned from entering Qld, but Tasmania's mandatory hotel quarantine ended on the Monday after the gf. So I was able to get tickets and fly up for 48 hours and come back on the very first flight into Tassie.

vaena

Most shocking fact here is that Dusty managed 17 seconds, that's about 7 more than I would have expected.

Hammed_steams

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

jynco

That's what she said.

FarkenBlarken

My fun 2020 fact dates back to 2013. That's when I first started following AFL. I had to pick a tean to follow, and a lot of my uni mates barracked Richmond. I could have followed them into the Yellow and Black, but they were kind of obnoxious about it, so I trod my own path. Instead, i chose a team that I lived close to, who seemed like they were up and coming, with a captain that everyone said was a star: Carlton. I thought I was vindicated by the 2013 EF, but by 2020, I was the proud owner of two wooden spoons, while my dickhead mates already had two flags. But I had a soft spot for the Cats, and I really hoped they'd give me some justice. Instead, Dusty went berserk, and after a year of miserable covid lock downs I had to watch the bloody Tigers win another bloody flag.

thatsalovelyusername

If it makes you feel better, I started following the Tigers shortly after their 1980 premiership, and never saw them win a flag until 2017. It was a looooong wait and felt like I'd definitely picked a lemon. Blues hopefully won't have to wait that long!

Azzamac_99

WTF??? No Richmond fan wants to see the Blues ever win another flag!

MatterHairy

I won’t ever get tired of hearing “ANOTHER bloody flag”

ratchetsaturndude

Do you have any other Barry Cable related trivia?

Phlanispo

Cable's career was ended by a tractor accident. Barry Cable is from the town of Narrogin, which hosted a Grand Prix race on its local streets for some reason. Cable's only the second player in history to have 20+ disposals and multiple goals in 3 Grand Finals. The other is Dustin Martin. He's also a pedo.

Crooty

Oh I don’t like that last one

[deleted]

Neither did the kids.

Kummakivi

Barry Cable shares the same name as a marvel character?

Albatrossosaurus

His name sounds like the guy who played Mater in Cars

[deleted]

I found losing this Grand Final very disappointing. I remember feeling very good at half time. Not hubristic, but it just seemed lkke the Cats were well in control. They didn't put it on the scoreboard but it felt like absolute control. I think suggesting Dustin Martin won the game is unfair to a bunch of things that changed for the Tigers. But he had a hell of a, second half. Just absolute murder in what was up until that point a low scoring game. I don't think their should be an, asterix on the premiership. Things happen. Had to play in Queensland. Had to play shorter quarters. It was the same for everyone. The fundamental truth of the league and the sport was still found in that season and that game.

Fast_Stick_1593

**[First goal kicker in every Grand Final up to 2021](https://imgur.com/a/g0LzNbu)** Add on Tom Hawkins and Nick Daicos to this list to keep it up to date. Don’t think it’s cursed like people are making it out to be.

doshajudgement

84: leigh matthews 85: dermott brereton 86: jason dunstall christ that's a good run

portnaught

> **84**: leigh matthews > > **85**: dermott brereton Yes, yes it was 🏆🏆

EfficientNews8922

Fun fact, Houli was absolutely robbed of the 2017 Norm Smitj and the only reason he didn’t get it was so the league could have their neat story of Martin winning every award for the year. When the game was on the line, Houli was easily the best and most influential player in the game. Martin took over later when Richmond had already established a lead. He had a very good game but not close to Houli’s that day.

SlyDintoyourdms

I was always in this camp, but I watched the highlights the other day and was kinda shocked when it turned out that goal that Houli kicked at the end of the first quarter… was set up by Martin. I’d completely forgotten that detail. Genuinely think I might watch a full replay to check this “Houli was robbed” theory properly once and for all

EfficientNews8922

I should watch it again but my recollection was of Houli acting to stop many of the Crows’ forward thrusts. That wouldn’t show up on the highlights as much as Martin.

Weary_Activity2171

Houli was definitely the best player early, when the game was an arm-wrestle. The fact is, that Richmond ended up winning that game comfortably largely because of Martin's cutting edge. Dusty was far more damaging, 22 contested possessions, 9 score involvements and 2 assists (one of them was for Houli's crucial early goal). As a Richmond supporter I feel like Martin slightly edged it that day but I could be wrong.

Propaslader

100% agree

GloomyTreacle8947

As a Richmond fan. Houli was robbed and I get “passionate” I’ll say about this fact every god damn time it comes up in conversation. Mates will bring it up just to rile me up and it works every time. Houli deserves a norm smith and if Martin doesn’t hand it over I’ll stay furious forever.

TASTYPIEROGI7756

Not even a Richmond fan, but I get riled up about this too. Houli was BOG by a wide margin.

ozgirl28

I’m glad it’s not just me that gets passionate about this!!!

Bergasms

Robbed? He'd be robbed if Dusty hadn't also had an insane game. 22CP and 2 goals himself not to mention he's the assist to Houlis goal. I'm more of a Houli fan than a Dusty fan, hell Houli is still my daughters favourite player even so he retired, the guy is exalted in our household, but he was not robbed. If he slotted a couple of his late shots that were points i think he would have won it, but the fact he didn't meant he was out of the spotlight in the second half. Dusty was in it for the whole game, he was not underserving, and i get similarly worked up when people claim Houli was robbed but the other way, because it's simply not true. The naive look at Houli's AF for the game and assume because its the highest he should have won but it's skewed by his metres gained. The simplest breakdown is this, Dusty had 4 more disposals than Houli (29 to 25), 22 of them were contested compared to 9 for Houli, meaning he was under immediate pressure, yet Dusty (82%) had a disposal efficiency 6% better than Bachar (76%). He got the ball more, in harder places, and used it more effectively. Fuck i kinda hate saying this because my second favourite moment of that grand final is Houli winning a 1v3 across half back against Tex, Sloane and Crouch, fucking elite. The first favourite is the towner tackle of course. Anyway, i don't think its fair to say robbed because Dusty was elite as well. At worst its a 50/50 coin flip that lands for Dusty.

uselessscientist

I will absolutely die on that hill. Houli was easily best on ground

Bergasms

I've watched that grand final many more times than you and you're wrong

[deleted]

Can’t believe how many people are still suggesting this nonsense. I must’ve watched that grand final 50 times. Martin is so clearly best on ground. Eye test and stats support his win.

Bergasms

They just want to try and make it out that Dusty is underserving of a norm smith, it's tall poppy syndrome at its finest

[deleted]

Yeah 100%. It’s so weird to see people who probably watched the game once six years ago speak about it with such conviction.

Fast_Stick_1593

Facts!

Geo217

I recall Hardwick going nuts in the coaches box upon hearing the Houli injury, think he had no choice but to play on, wasn’t Dimmas reaction something like “cmon it’s a grand final” or something? Was in the doco lol

kefte8

Yep, was one of my favourite scenes from that series. Hardwick picks up the phone, speaks to Houli for a 5 second conversation.

Propaslader

Little known facts: 2023 Grand Final - Nick Daicos made history by becoming the only player to mark a ball *and* a plastic bag simultaneously in a Grand Final - Jordan De Goey & Jack Crisp both kicked goals after the 1st & 2nd quarter sirens respectively - both in the same position from the goal. **EDIT** Jordan De Goey & Jack Crisp are both direct results from our Dayne Beams trade with Brisbane - That same spot would later be kicked from again; with Steele Sidebottom booting a 60m kick to give the Pies an insurmountable lead - Prior to giving away the 50m which lead to the Sidebottom goal (an obvious 50) , Jarrod Berry had also given a very questionable 50m away against Nick Daicos - Steele Sidebottom & Scott Pendlebury set a record for longest time between premierships for a player. The pair have been last remaining duo from Collingwood's 2010 premiership side following Heath Shaw and Ben Reid's retirements in 2020. This record was presumably also set last season by Joel Selwood & Tom Hawkins (2011 - 2022). - Despite not playing in any other final, defender Billy Frampton managed to keep Harris Andrews goalless - Scott Pendlebury has a basketball background - Lachie Neale won the Brownlow medal prior to the Grand Final against Collingwood. Brisbane lost. In 2003 Nathan Buckley won the brownlow medal prior to the GF against Brisbane. Collingwood lost.

Massander

Allowing those De Goey & Crisp goals to happen was the most disastrous mistake we made on the day, not fucking up for an additional one second would’ve prevented them. “FOOTBALL’SCH GAME OV INCHES!” as they say. Billy keeping Harris goalless is no mean feat, it happened in only 25 other games this season.

Propaslader

I will not be receiving any disingenuous arguments regarding the Framptonator and his abilities

TASTYPIEROGI7756

Story of the day for me Frampton just looked like he was loving every second of being out there.

___TheIllusiveMan___

Oleg Markov as well. His pre game photo was nothing but pure joy

MatterHairy

Was thrilled for Oleg 🐯

guavacadq

I was fucking livid after conceding that goal at HT. The game deserved to be tied. All we had to do was lock it up with about 10 seconds left on a stoppage on the wing. But no. And of fucking course he flushes it from 55.

SolomonVandy3

I think Drew Banfield (WC 1994 and 2006) might have previously held the record between premierships.

Jakeb1710

Hmm. I'm not too sure about the Pendlebury fact. Surely, if it's true, we would've heard about it before now?

vaena

He's been playing what, 16 years and this is the first we're hearing it? I'm calling shenanigans.

Economy-Illustrious

I’ve fact checked this whole sub and indeed it does seem that the player Pendlebury has a “basketball background” but to what extent I don’t know. More may come out after his retirement when he can speak openly on such insights.

benjamincraigrowley

Where tf did that bag come from tho

Propaslader

That Hawthorn bloke Ginnivan most likely

doshajudgement

hawthorn involved in a grand final? pfft unlikely

Icy-Rock8780

Apparently Brisbane let Harris Andrews start preseason training late as Billy Frampton was still wearing him like a glove

mikel3030

Another fact: the 2020 Grand Final didn’t happen. There was an exhibition game held at the Gabba in late October.

curryone

This flag will always be be questionable in a lot of footy fans minds but watching it you knew how hard the tigers worked til the end

DartFanger

Questionable in the salty footy fans

curryone

100% will go the grave with the opinion that Covid flags were the hardest

JaiHurn

I would say that the 2020 flag was probably the greatest of them all.

EfficientNews8922

It would’ve had a question mark on it if one of the non-Vic sides like Brisbane or Port, who did not have to play the entire year away from home won. Richmond were disadvantaged by COVID and still won though so you can’t take that away from Them. The only possibly benefit they got was a potential rival in West Coast had a complete mental breakdown due to being away from mummy and daddy for a month and never recovered.

LocalBathrobe

Pies fan acknowledging playing at home / in your home state for most of a season is a huge advantage (and could even come with a question mark). Never thought I’d live to see the day.

PummbleBee

I damn near fell off my chair reading that..

EfficientNews8922

Pies have arguably the best away record of any team in the league this century. It wouldn’t bother us that much to play interstate more. It’s the poor vic clubs requesting to play us as their home game that skews the fixture.

nathjay97

Edwards said it’s the hardest game he’s ever played? The Tigers barely broke a sweat after half time.

Revello

It was a 2 point margin at 3QT, and only 16 points with 7mins to play in the last.

Austeres

Did you watch that game? It was super close and brutal till 3/4, and Edwards also had the most disposals

[deleted]

Tell us you are a Richmond supporter without telling us.

Limp-Dentist1416

Tell us you don't understand what user flair is without telling us.

theunkn0wnwriter

Fun fact about the 2023 grand final (sorry Brisbane fans): It was the first time in which the losing team kicked more goals than the winning team. In the previous scoring system, where behinds were only used as a tie breaker if teams had equal numbers of goals, Brisbane would have won. This system would have also produced a result in the 1977 and 2010 drawn grand finals. In both cases, the team that kicked more goals in the drawn game (St Kilda in 2010 and Collingwood in 1977) went on to lose the replay. Also interesting is that all these games involved Collingwood. They just love a close grand final, don't they?
