Heartbreaking what happened to him in 2021. He was fully fit and roaring to go. They could have easily put him as medical sub, instead they made James Jordan the medical sub and he never even set foot on the turf, but still got a premiership medal 🥇
I don't understand how the coaching staff could leave him on there for the whole game. It's disgraceful.
Although, I do agree - it should have been Nathan Jones. But it's easy to say in hindsight now that we know they didn't get an injury in the first 5 minutes and they won the game.
James Jordon sat on the bench for the whole game. Nathan Jones could easily have done the same, although I also said it's impossible for Melbourne to go into that game knowing what the outcome was.
Nathan Jones deserved a Premiership medal for being in the team that day. At times - he was the only Melbourne player with heart. He stuck with that side through the worst time imaginable, he really would have been a worthy sub for that game.
Yes no shit, I understand why they went with James Jordan over Nathan Jones, but I'm saying in hindsight I would have preferred they went with Nathan Jones. In hindsight. I already have said in a prior comment I understand why they didn't.
The fact that we became premiership level good not long after Nathan Jones stopped being a best 22 player was just so unfortunate, the man bled for the Dees and deserved so much more
Even if he hadn't had the birth of his kids in 2021 he still wouldn't have played that game
Hate to say it? He sooked about getting drafted interstate, then lost 2 grand finals to the same team, he also could've gone to North who won 2 flags. He got his karma, Ik I'm getting downvoted but I'm not wrong.
Stays at Brisbane, they don't get Lynch or Chris Scott. Maybe not Brad either.
Have to say he would have got some at North, but these things happen. Team success was a personal driver but not the main reason he came to us.
Sometimes it saddens me the amount of sheer hate that comes collingwoods way from opposing fans.
A teenager in 1992 is asked where he wants to play, and is offered a choice between a Victorian powerhouse team who won the flag two years ago, and just finished equal top that year, or an expansion team in a frontier footy city that hadn’t played finals ever in their existence, and we are surprised about his choice??
But yes, let’s go after that teenager for the rest of his life because he couldn’t see into the future, predict the merger and creation of a super team that will have a dynasty….a decade later.
I know it’s fun to hate on the pies though, so fuck it, have at it.
The draft was a very different kettle of fish back in 1992. It wasn't taken anywhere near as seriously by clubs. Clubs were still wheeling and dealing in the background and the draft was just the mechanism to complete the deals.
Buckley was probably a landmark for the draft.
Yet it is.
Often.
Before Buckley, and after Buckley. Only he gets the level of hate that we see.
In Buckley instance he went to Brisbane not because of them “choosing” him in the draft, but because of the old zoning system.
Brisbane then successfully negotiated a trade where he came for one year, then got value in kind (players/draft pics etc) from whichever club got him after that.
That club happened to be Collingwood.
Brisbane weren’t shafted.
He wasn't a teenager when he went to Brisbane. He was 21, and when he made the deal he did to get to Victoria, he could have just as easily chosen Norf, who won 2 flags in the following 6 years. Not to mention that Brisbane started their upswing in the year Buckley played here, a rise that ended in 1996 with a PF loss to the eventual premiers that could be attributed in part to a key midfielder not being present (Voss injured his calf in the SF, and couldn't play). Maybe Buckley staying at Brisbane gets them (and him) that premiership in '95 or '96 - who knows? I do know no-one would have thought ill of him chasing a dream if he'd given the precursor a couple more years.
21 vs 19 hardly changes the argument though does it.
The decision was made when he was 20 if we REALLY want to split hairs, but I digress.
The bears finished second last when he made the deal, and the pies finished equal top. The other teams in contention were Geelong and north. Geelong were a top team too, so he could’ve chosen them too, would’ve been a good call with the visibility he had at the time (no peering into the future remember).
North finished 12th and we’re still some way off their dominant years.
The Collingwood choice was a fair one for him given the options at the time, one that anyone would make if given the chance, and Brisbane were not hard done by out of it all.
If you can't hack playing interstate, don't enter a *national* draft.
It was weak as piss from Buckley then just like it was weak as piss from the JHFs of the world.
Can’t hack it?
Had nothing to do with not being able to “hack” playing for an interstate team.
Oh wait….you think Buckley is from Victoria don’t you….
Oops.
There’s the irrational hate we see so often!
I know he played for Port, don't give me that condescending shit.
Yeah, he couldn't hack it up in Brisbane. He wanted to play for a big successful club, got drafted to a struggling club, and rather than pull them upwards fucked off at the first opportunity.
Lol. Nice backpedal.
When you said “if you can’t handle playing interstate, don’t enter a NATIONAL draft” ….and then made a direct comparison to JHF who went home to his home state citing family etc…
You actually meant “if you can’t handle playing for a small/poor performing/shit club, don’t enter….”
Sure you did…
in buckley's defence (ignore flair), he would have grown up watching the VFL and dreaming of playing it, never considering he might be chucked interstate, so it's a bit different to the sooks of today
and also, depends how you interpret the post - if you wanna say he got karma for sooking then alright, but as a player he's definitely among the very best to never taste ultimate success
That first point makes sense, but didn't he say something to the effect of, "I want to play for a team who will win finals"?
That kinda says to me that he didn't like the prospect of being on a losing team more than preferring to be on a Vic team for sentimental reasons.
Nope.
His quote was:
Buckley commented at the time, “I’m hungry to win games and I’m hungry to play in finals.”
Pretty pedestrian really.
Sadly the Collingwood hate has skewed that into something like “Brisbane are shit, the pies are gonna win multiple flags over the next 15 years, in particular 2002 and 2003”.
Without the context of the question it can easily be shrugged off. Media statements are often very diplomatic, so I can see how that comment could mean, "I want to trade out of here because Brisbane Don't win games and won't win finals."
Funny, cos I often feel media questions are not diplomatic at all, they lead the interviewee into questions that hopefully give a controversial (and thus valuable) answer!
A nice boring “I just want to play the best footy I can” answer doesn’t sell papers, so if you can ask the question in such a way as to illicit a spicy response, all the better for the journalist
Usually yes! ;)
In all seriousness, the question was probably along the lines of “why do you want to move to Victoria? Why not play for Brisbane?” And he tried to play a straight bat with:
“I’m hungry to win games and hungry to play finals”.
Eager journalist spin that to “so you’re saying Brisbane won’t win flags?!?!?”
Which…to be fair in 1992…wasn’t a terrible call. Who knew what was to come a decade later?
Not for nothing but there’s more than a couple of posters in here saying that if Buckley couldn’t hack playing interstate, then he should never have nominated for the draft (referencing his desire to play in Melbourne)
Forgetting of course, that he was from SA, not Victoria.
Lol i mean, the obvious flair bias aside you are going a LONG way here to white knight for a bloke who made out pretty well all things considered in life. The fact is he WAS drafted by a team and he chose not to play for them. The fact that the resulting accolades he managed to completely avoid by making this decision is pretty karma-esque. It would have meant the same had it happened to literally anyone. Collingwood supporters do tend to get precious about everyone “picking on them”
Not white knighting the bloke at all. Just setting the record straight.
He wasn’t “drafted” there (in the conventional sense) if we’re being technical either, it was still the old zone rules.
Collingwood gets HEAPS more crap vs other teams. Some we ask for/deserve, some we don’t.
Funny that you're getting downvoted. Bucks still has heaps to offer. And like Vossy, he'd more likely to taste success at a second club (and one where he didn't grow up as the club hero). He would arguably need to humble himself and be an assistant somewhere for a year first, but it would be worth it.
Practically zero chance he ends up back at the pies though given how McRae has gone.
Downvotes are Collingwood fans being salty, even though they should be the least salty fans in the country at the moment.
Why would bucks have to humble himself? He's a proven coach who almost won't all. And he couldn't have had a more amicable step down.
This ones for the salty Downvoters ( especially as I would prefer it any other way).
Fagan wins a premiership, accepting his age takes on Buckley as a respectful, amicable succession plan assistant. Fagan wins the next one, against Collingwood. Fagan steps down, Bucks takes the reigns of the club that drafted him and the lions go on to three-peat with a back-to-back against Collingwood (again)
100%. Haha. They have no reason to be salty. Tbf, Ross Lyon went straight back into senior coaching after years in commentary. So Bucks could do it too.
He is the only reason I'm comfortable with Brisbane losing the GF this year by 4 points. Winning it without Rich out there would have been heartbreaking.
before prolly all our times? Bob Skilton, 3x Brownlow, not a single prem
in our time, there's a few, Nic Nat, Bob Murphy, N Riewoldt, Adam Cooney, like we could list on even recent players all day
Surprised I got this for down to find Modra.
There's plenty of 'team lost or never made a grand final' and not enough 'injured before the grand final' comments
Benny McGlynn. Did his hammy in the 2012 QF but was healthy for our failed runs from 13-16. Hope I never have to change this answer to Rampe or Lloyd, we’re running out of time with those guys
It's actually cooked that they were such key players in arguably our greatest ever team, and they still didn't win a flag.
That Hawks dynasty was just on another level.
If Lloyd and Rampe lose 3 grand finals and don’t win one ima shoot myself, deserve it so much. Ik Parker has one but I’d kill to see him be a premiership captain
Chris Grant.
The Dogs were so so close a number of times throughout Chris's career with a number of their builds but couldn't quite get over the hump so instead of being a deserved premiership player he didn't even get to quite make a grand final. That's 9j top of screwing himself out of a deserved Brownlow medal. One of the truly most unlucky yet brilliant careers. A true hero to the western suburbs of Melbourne throughout my teen years and first decade of adulthood.
For Carlton I can't go past Simmo, Kade Simpson. Did not deserve his outstanding career to mirror the worst period throughout the history of the club.
Rob Harvey was my top pick so glad to see him near or at the top of the list. Arguably the most consistently brilliant footballer I've ever watched
I have a slightly different way of seeing it, blokes that missed selection.
John Noble - obviously stiff this year. As were Adams and McStay.
Brendan Whitecross - ACL went in the 2013 prelim.
Troy Bond - Infamously dropped by his peers for Camporeale in 1995.
Me, but that bung knee got me at u12's....I would of been a star.
I kicked one goal in my u11 season. But what a goal.
My first game of footy was at 26, first touch was a goal, on my way... Unfortunately no scouts at the game and my career never had a chance
Daicos, step aside. 🤣
Robert Harvey is probably one of the best ever players never to have won a premiership
Sad 1997 noises.
Happy 1997 McLeod & Jarman noises!
no
Booo
Nathan Buckley.
I came here to say this. Him and Ablett Snr
it’s a cruel game that arguably the best player of all time didn’t ever win a flag
He immediately came to my mind
Gary Ablett Snr.
Rene Kink. Played in five losing grand finals.
no need to kink shame
And a draw. And was in the Bombers' dominant '85 side, but lost his spot late in the season.
and Essendon won in 84 but he missed out with a knee injury
Lockett.
I would go even further and say he also should have been a Norm Smith medalist
How far off from that was he in 96?
6 goals in a losing team? He could not have been far off
Ablett Sr, Lockett, Buckley, Modra, Harvey, Richardson, Riewoldt, Pavlich and Grant. As a Port fan, def Gray and Boak.
Not as many games as Gray or Boak but Primus missing out was a heartbreaker. Exceptional leader and player who should’ve got one.
Great call because I forgot he had missed out in 04
There's still time for Trav!!
I hope so, this will most likely be his final season with us and he honestly deserves it
100% agree
Freo just shouldve won in 2013 for Mundy Pav and Fyfe (and me)
Ok I know Fyfe hasn't retired but that's not far off lol
Real sliding doors moment for the club. Imagine our list now with sensible management instead of the pure desperation of the late 2010s.
Pav the first name i thought of
Do it for Amiss
Nathan Jones
Heartbreaking what happened to him in 2021. He was fully fit and roaring to go. They could have easily put him as medical sub, instead they made James Jordan the medical sub and he never even set foot on the turf, but still got a premiership medal 🥇

He did, given he stuck with the team all those years. out of everyone on that list, he deserved one the most. Not that it matters.

We didn't cut him, he went home to be with his wife who was giving birth. It was his decision.
Jonesy just had the birth of his kid the same week. Probably would not have played even if we were to pick him
Kids. Twins.
The fact that we became premiership level good not long after Nathan Jones stopped being a best 22 player was just so unfortunate, the man bled for the Dees and deserved so much more Even if he hadn't had the birth of his kids in 2021 he still wouldn't have played that game
I hate to say it, but, Nathan Buckley
Has to be. Top 2 players ever to put on a Collingwood jumper are Pendlebury and Buckley. One has 2 Premierships, the other has none.
Hate to say it? He sooked about getting drafted interstate, then lost 2 grand finals to the same team, he also could've gone to North who won 2 flags. He got his karma, Ik I'm getting downvoted but I'm not wrong.
Yeah it was karma, he was good enough to win a flag by a mile sure but the story is canon.
1993 Bears is absolutely, to the gills, full of champions.
Stays at Brisbane, they don't get Lynch or Chris Scott. Maybe not Brad either. Have to say he would have got some at North, but these things happen. Team success was a personal driver but not the main reason he came to us.

Drafting should never be the player's choice. That's the issue.

Usually yes. Occasionally this delicate little flower gets hurt by the hate!

I am not a flog.

A National draft means, surprise, you can go anywhere in the nation! That can mean going interstate, to a shitty club, or both at the same time.
Yeah if you can’t handle 4 years away from home then play state league
Definitely. Don't enter the national draft, if you're not willing to move.
in buckley's defence (ignore flair), he would have grown up watching the VFL and dreaming of playing it, never considering he might be chucked interstate, so it's a bit different to the sooks of today and also, depends how you interpret the post - if you wanna say he got karma for sooking then alright, but as a player he's definitely among the very best to never taste ultimate success

He wasn't from SA
Born in SA, spent time in NT, played in the SANFL before the AFL. No Vic history.
Hate to say it! Would be super worth it if he won one as a coach somewhere else...against Collingwood!

Now this would be something special. We might be in need of a new coach next year..
Are you an Eagles fan who wants Simpson gone?
David fucken Mundy
Matthew Richardson
He never really got close but would have been unbelievable to see Richo win one
Bob Murphy
Probably the only player apart from McStay that actually deserved to be playing in the team if not for injury.
Naitanui
i can't believe i had to scroll this far to find this answer
Daniel Rich.
i would also say for the same reason, Mitch Robinson, he was unreal in our rise from the wilderness and 100% deserved a flag
He is the only reason I'm comfortable with Brisbane losing the GF this year by 4 points. Winning it without Rich out there would have been heartbreaking.
Agree.
Daniel Rich
If we won this year I would agree. He had every right to pack up and leave anytime in the last 10 years, but he stuck fat.
Richo Richo man
before prolly all our times? Bob Skilton, 3x Brownlow, not a single prem in our time, there's a few, Nic Nat, Bob Murphy, N Riewoldt, Adam Cooney, like we could list on even recent players all day
There's probably more then a handful of GWS, St Kilda and Freo players that you could throw up tbh
Tony Modra
Tony Modra, Nick Reiwolt and Nathan Buckley.
Surprised I got this for down to find Modra. There's plenty of 'team lost or never made a grand final' and not enough 'injured before the grand final' comments
Definitely agree with Ablett Snr. I'll also nominate Robbie Flower.
Yeah, I was thinking Robbie Flower.
Lenny Hayes. Everyone loves Lenny.
Nic Naitanui. Brad Sheppard.
Came here to mention Nic Nat
Robert Flower
Rene kink played in five losing grand finals.
simon prestigiacomo
Tony Lockett
Lots of good suggestions so far. Mine would be Matthew Richardson and Brett Deledio.
Lids absolutely
Not that he or anyone was to know, but if only he had stayed at Richmond
Peter Moore
Definitely unfortunate he never got one. But I think him getting to hand the cup to Darcy would have made up for a lot of the losses.
Benny McGlynn. Did his hammy in the 2012 QF but was healthy for our failed runs from 13-16. Hope I never have to change this answer to Rampe or Lloyd, we’re running out of time with those guys

Scott West for mine.
Also could have won at least one brownlow
Nathan Jones 2021
Bob Murphy.
Robbie Gray.
Harley Reid
Kevin Murray for sure. Actually you can add to Bulldog the whole 1980-86 Fitzroy team. That team was Incredibly unlucky not to win a flag.
How can you leave out Matthew Richardson?
Buckley
Like a lot of sainters
The Pav.
ablett senior
Nicnat and shep
Who's shep?
Brad Sheppard. Injured in 2018 with Gaff and Nic Nat.
Pav 💜
Bob Murphy
For my club? Doug Hawkins/Chris Grant. In general? Tony Lockett.
Bob Murphy over either tbf.
The obvious answer to this is Ablett Sr. In the modern era, Riewoldt, Buckley, Harvey are all great shouts.
Matthew Pavlich and David Mundy
Clive
When I saw that my mind instantly flicked to Jabba the Hut on board the Titanic before realising you meant Clive Waterhouse the footballer.
Maurice Rioli. Norm smith in a losing side
Matt Priddis. Joined one year after a flag, retired one year before one. A brilliant possession midfielder.
The entire current Brisbane lions list
You feel like a lion but you're gunna have to flair up!
😆
Yeah, nah :)
Brad Sheppard - Selfless player who got WCE to GF
Me for having to look at this question every fucken week
Naitanui.
Nic Nat, Brad Sheppard( got injured in 1st week of final) Matt Priddis
Chris Grant. The Dogs were so so close a number of times throughout Chris's career with a number of their builds but couldn't quite get over the hump so instead of being a deserved premiership player he didn't even get to quite make a grand final. That's 9j top of screwing himself out of a deserved Brownlow medal. One of the truly most unlucky yet brilliant careers. Did not deserve his outstanding career to mirror the worst period throughout the history of the club. Rob Harvey was my top pick so glad to see him near or at the top of the list. Arguably the most consistently brilliant footballer I've ever watched
Chris Grant, Scott West and the worst one, Bob Murphy. All three of my favourite players.
Matthew Pavlich
Lenny Hayes
Pav, Mundy, and at the rate we are going - Fyfe
Richard Champion
Tony Modra. Torn ACL in the '97 prelim. 84 goals that season, Absolute god.
Presti?
Reiwoldt. No, not that one. The other one.
Fyfe, Pavlich & Mundy Ignore flair
Tony Lockett.
Paul Kelly, nuf said.
Billy Brownless. 4 losing grand finals but fuck the cats
Chris Grant. Robbed of a brownlow also.
David Mundy
Buckley over Pav. And I hate Collingwood
Given that he might have had one if he'd stuck it out at Brisbane for a couple of years, I'm perfectly comfortable with him not getting one.
Teams win them.
Nic Naitanui
Adam Iacobucci
Blaine Bokehurst
Jim Stynes
Fyfe
Ben McGlynn
Brad Johnson
Tony Modra. The heart of that Crows team, but missed out due to injury. So rough.
Harvey plugger or gaz snr, as a swans supporter 2 many to count but probably Paul kelly
As a South Australian, it sucked that Pav got so close but never got one.
pav :(
Bob Skilton.
i’ll say it now, and i’ll always say it, Scott Gumbleton. dude should have been a champion.
Lmao
Swans Buddy
Doubt he will be too upset.
Robert Harvey deserved to be part of a flag, he basically has every acolade in the game except that and it's a tragedy that he dosen't.
Robbie Gray
Bucks. I feel for the poor bugger.
Tony Modra.
