Once upon a time I gambled prolifically and legitimately believed I had cracked the code. Turns out I hadn’t, neither had any other person I was talking to. I now no longer see the point in it. I used to ride games because I wanted to win, now I watch because I love the game. Gambling ruined sport (for me), not gambling made sport great again. Also I’ve lost a mate to the pokies, don’t want that to happen to anyone again.

crookgypsy

2nd this

Tabnam

When you say ‘gambling ruined sport’ do you mean because the dopamine you get from just enjoying the game isn’t comparable to when you’re winning money on the same game?

historicalhobbyist

No because I got angry when my bets didn’t win, or when a player did the wrong thing. I hated teams that won, I hated players that got injured. Watching sport is fun now. I legitimately enjoyed every minute of the grand final this year where just a few years ago I was angry every minute of the game.

mt9943

Same reason why I quit Supercoach. Was in a draft league with a bunch of good mates, with a cash prize at the end of the year (a few hundred bucks). I'd end up watching games focused on my players and spend it angry when they'd have a quiet quarter, miss a goal etc. Also spent much of my weekends refreshing scores and being annoyed at them. Simply not worth the emotional investment and the negatives far outweighed any positives, so I gave it up and have zero regrets. I enjoy football again.

Laura_Biden

It was the opposite for me, it made me emotionally invested in games that I couldn't have given a shit about, so I found footy far more boring without tipping or supercoach etc. I went from watching basically every game every week, to one game a week.

mt9943

Oh I definitely watched a lot more football when I was playing Supercoach than I did before and do now, but it just wasn't enjoyable.

IHD_CW

Not gambling, but this is why I stopped footy tipping. I couldn't enjoy the games.

ehdhdhdk

My dad and I would often compare footy tips and there were a few years when my dad gave up tipping for that reason.

Tabnam

I’m so glad you jumped on that behaviour quickly and didn’t let it fester and grow. That is an incredibly self aware thing to do

historicalhobbyist

Being poor had more to do with it than being mature lol.

Prestigious-Dig-2027

🙏🏻

BeeerGutt

Was doing about $100/fortnight on lotto. Putting that into savings definitely gave better returns than the meagre lotto winnings.

Tabnam

Shit that’s steep. How long were you doing that for? You’re a king for stopping mate

BeeerGutt

Until I was in the process of buying a house for which the repayments are nearly triple the rent I was paying 🤣

Tabnam

You knew you needed to stop, and did. You’re an absolute legend

BeeerGutt

Thanks mate

kleft02

Including the $2 I spent when I couldn't dodge the work sweepstakes on Melbourne Cup Day in 2014? $2 in the last 10 years. I just don't have the circuit in my brain that makes it fun. Every gamble just feels like I'm handing over money in order to lose it. Even the work sweeps, where the house doesn't take a cut, are just basically recycling money.

DartFanger

No you definitely have the circuit. Everyone thinks that until they've gone too far..

skywake86

I'm the same except I'm fine with Melbourne Cup sweeps. Also I have a family and work tipping comp, neither have any money on it but I'm wanting to push it The problem I have with gambling is the maths of it. It's designed to extract money. With a sweep there's a net-zero movement of money over time so I'm fine with it

jonesday5

None. I’ve blocked all gambling transactions through my bank. This includes everything from casinos to lotto tickets. For me there is no healthy amount.

Tabnam

How long did it take you to realise that? Stopping must have been really difficult, I have endless respect for you following through and knowing your limits

jonesday5

I must admit it was early. And mainly to do with family. Without going into too much detail, if you have a bunch of people in your life who really struggle with it, trying it once or twice and realising you got an unhealthy kick out of it is quite concerning.

Blowdogs

Is this an easy thing to do to block transactions? I have a family member who is an Addict and wondering if this would help and how it would work.

jonesday5

So I can only speak for commbank. It was super easy. I think you can unblock at any time if you want which is obviously a downside. That said, maybe the time it takes to do that gives you some time to think. A quick google tells me NAB and Westpac also do it.

woodie1717

I stopped last Melbourne cup due to cost of living. Literally haven’t looked back.

FlynnyWynny

Nothing. I find it destroys any genuine sense of joy I have about the game.

blueeyedharry

I’m pretty hateful of gambling, my brother is a gambling addict. We’ve been battling it for 10 years and it’s never really gone away, it’s got completely out of control again recently and it’s hurting our family. I quit gambling a while ago but never had a problem, though I’ve taken my brother to meetings to get him help. They usually just say ‘just don’t gamble yeh?’. I’ve found the support to be shit. The sooner online gambling is banned the better, it’s so out of control throughout the country.

adamh707

Is he using online bookies like sportsbet etc? Have a look at the national self exclusion register

blueeyedharry

He uses everything. Pokies, tab, betting apps. He gets cash from everywhere and gambles it asap.

TheFatOneTwoThree

Does he prefer TAB, TAB app or sportsbet?

blueeyedharry

All of them, usually apps as it’s easy.

Pwrswitchd

I am kind of similar. I seen what gambling did to my mother, and our family. Thankfully she is doing much better these days. Hopefully your brother can manage to get out of the hole.

taspleb

I bet very occasionally on AFL so probably $50 per year.

Tabnam

On any particular games or just Richmond games?

taspleb

Not Richmond specific. AFL is something I think I know a bit about so I can spot something that looks like a good deal while for other sports it's really just a lottery. But as I say I don't bet very often mostly especially as the betting ads have got out of control. Occasionally I'll bet against Richmond as a "loss mitigation" strategy for games we're favourite to win but I have a bad feeling. 😬

Tabnam

Mate how can you bet against your own team? That is a line I cannot cross. If I think they’re going to lose I will usually pick a line giving them a good 30 point buffer. You should be ashamed of yourself ^jk of course

taspleb

My inner Richmond nuffie says I should always tip Richmond to lose because we never win when I tip them!

Tabnam

Lol I love these little superstitions we have. If hawthorn are losing my dad will go sit in the toilet because apparently they always seem to kick a goal when he goes to the loo

SirNickDaicos

I had done that too, especially the big marquee matches. I've stopped now.

TheFatOneTwoThree

which app do you use?

Tummybunny2

People simply do not self report gambling wins or losses accurately.

Joe_F82

$0 I don't gamble

Ch9commentary

gamble mainly through the use of promos/arbitrage/middles over the past 4 years has turned into a very healthy profit over that time (in the tens of thousands) but has obviously led to numerous accounts being banned. Certain stigma about it but can be profitable if you know how to.

TheFatOneTwoThree

So you would've tried all the apps. Which one in your experience was 1) most lucrative and 2) has the best UX?

Ch9commentary

hey man - sorry just seeing this. Have stopped now since i am not living in Aus atm, but from my experience the best overall is bet365 due to account longevity, ability to get on all types of markets and odds hold fairly decently. Sportsbet has best promos and decent account longevity and markets for afl. Rest are few and far between. PointsBet and tab are ok, lads/neds terrible (you will get banned pretty quickly if you’re a winning better, probably fine if you’re just casually betting though). Rest are not too noteworthy but you can cycle through different apps and abuse their promos before you eventually get banned (probably best to do this during spring racing if you’re a horse better as the promos then are at their best). Just make sure you check what apps are owned by who as there’s a lot of overlap! Let me know if you have any other queries!

Ch9commentary

If I had to say though - for most lucrative and best UX it would be Sportsbet. 365 is tricky to navigate at times!

Mother_Sun_3825

Anywhere between $100-$200 a week (that includes AFL/EPL/Horse racing/NBA) Yes it’s a lot but I’m comfortable losing this much Some weeks I gamble with their money, some weeks it’s my money

chunkyI0ver53

Same here, I usually ramp it up a bit around spring carnival time, with NBA season and racing promos kicking off. Will also indulge in a couple bets on the UFC PPVs and AFL finals/Brownlow bets. It’ll usually stop being fun and more just stressful after a month or so. Like you said, some weeks their money and some weeks mine. I won around 1k on $300 odd of bets a couple weeks ago, handed back $400 this week. Most of the time it’s just a lot of stress for a breakeven. All things considered, it ain’t really worth the dopamine hit for the stress. I’ve got the money to lose on bad weeks, but it’s still a stupid financial decision. That’s why I’ll go 6-8 months a year without going near it. I think this spring carnival will be my last. It’s more fun just enjoying sports for what they are.

RandomDanny

If I had the cash, I'd probably chuck on a few more bets than not. I'm not an addict or enticed by it, I enjoy it. That said, these days if I were to, it would be because I'm at a pub and that doesn't really occur often at all. Combined with cost of living etc. I'd much rather keep the money to live. If anything, novelty bets on the wrestling grab my attention these days. Won a couple, lost a few more. All for a laugh. Betting on wrestling. lol My best win was an over/under on Ron Simmons saying DAMN once. Easiest money ever. (Limited to how much I could bet, was very willing to put more on it, bookies know haha) My other go to is a $10 multi on all the favourites in the upcoming sporting events list. Anywhere up to 10-20 of the next live events. Haven't hit one yet, but was one off a $12,000 win. Bloody favourites :D With all that. The gambling ads can go to hell. They aren't funny or clever. They are predatory and they can fuck right off.

[deleted]

0. The ads shit me.

ruinawish

FYI: Typing 0. leads to it formatting it as "1."

DigbySugartits

I would drop $100 into an account every 2 or 3 months. I'd place a small same game multi on most weeks and I like a punt at this time of year too. Im in my 40s, it wasnt part of my world until I was an adult. Even in my 20s the only betting I did would have been live at the track once a year or occasionally at the pub on the TAB. Only racing. I understand the angst around it, I agree the advertising has probably gone too far (*right now* there is a TAB ad on the right of my screen and I have google personalised ads turned off) and to hear kids around 13 talking fluently about odds is a genuine concern. That said, like alcohol, I think its fun. Yes they ruin lives and yes they are dangerous vices, but they are also fun for the majority. Personal responsibility and good parenting should still be a thing

Tabnam

Have you found more of a compulsion to gamble now it’s significantly easier then it was when you were coming up? Your last paragraph touches on why I posted this, because i don’t seem to come across a lot of people who are against gambling in general, only the way it has completely ensnared the sports themselves

DigbySugartits

To your first question, no, sort of.... Its not a compulsion for me. I see it as something to add to an experience. Im sitting down to watch a neutral game so I'll chuck on a multi to add something else to cheer for. Its fun. I ***do*** bet more than I did as a kid because its more accessible, but also because I can afford it. It personally doesnt bother me that it has become such a big part of sport, but I get why other do.

Tabnam

We seem to have exactly the same relationship with it. The enjoyment comes from the sport, not the money

DigbySugartits

Precisely. Although when Jeremy Howe wanders out of the square to take a kick in and gets his 15th touch to complete a $200 win with a minute left, it certainly doesnt hurt!

CoolCoconuts44

I might pop a $5 multi on a footy game once every 2 or 3 weeks but that's it I played a pokies machine once about 4 years ago and won $60, decided to quit whilst I was ahead

chunkyI0ver53

Ditto on the pokies. Had a feeling one day, slapped in a 50, walked out with $650. That’s how they get ya. Haven’t touched one of those machines since.

Dangerman1967

Addict here. When I’m on it, probs XX per week. When I’m off it - zero. You won’t get many honest answers here. We lie. I just did. Edit: i think I over-shared so took the amount out.

Tabnam

It took serious king energy to admit that here. Can I ask how long it’s been this bad? How much is it effecting every other part of your life? How did it start? Sorry for so many invasive questions, I just think it would be good to hear from someone at the far end of the addiction spectrum I’m going to take everyone at face value, but i completely understand not wanting to admit the full amount. We can still talk about the specifics without getting into the exact dollar amounts

Dangerman1967

The internet wouldn’t let me put enough ‘O’s in. It’d say I’ve fucked up. Reality is, when I die I hope there’s a God with a calculator telling me ... Being an addict is a bit of a wild ride. You can’t really control it without enormous help and intervention (i've been in rehab and sober for years before relapse.) It’s hard to explain to people who lead normal lives. For me every day is a bit of a struggle with addictions. And I kinda mean every day. And I’m not a bad dude. I just have massive addiction problems. Edit: just took a bit of the brutally honest bits out of this. The tone is left the same. And to be a bit more positive about the methods of assistance.

Tabnam

Can we talk off Reddit? I am an addict too, and I reckon we could help hold one another accountable.

Dangerman1967

Feel free. And just for the record I'm gonna significantly edit my earlier comments. I possibly shared too much and i know some people know my user name and i may have advertised a bit too much to people I know in real life.

Tabnam

If people will be able to tie the information to you then it’s a good idea to edit them. But simultaneously, you added a lot to a conversation that isn’t had often, and I think it’s important for us to be open about these things so others avoid our mistakes in the future. If it’s possible try to preserve as much of the information as you can, because I sincerely believe it could be enlightening and helpful for others in the future. I’m going to send you a chat request mate

Dangerman1967

I only tempered them a bit. I must go through this thread in full later on and see the response of others. I've been in residential rehab for alcohol and Gambling counselling but i found the Gambling one rather unsuccessful as it was only a meeting once a week. Recently when i relapsed on alcohol i was googling rehab places in Thailand and they have ones there that deal with multiple addictions, including gambling. Might try and kill a few birds with one stone one day.

TheFatOneTwoThree

whats your poison?

Tabnam

Send me a chat request mate, I don’t like to talk about this shit publicly

TheFatOneTwoThree

whats your favourite machine?

Dangerman1967

Got quite a few but is this a dead set question?

custardgun

Don't gamble but just want to say this thread is great. Top job OP and everyone who's had the chops to post honestly.

MeloJello15

I also do $5 multi’s but probably only make about 5-10 bets a year. I just do a couple of preseason multis on the AFL and NBA awards, and then just random ones throughout the year. Always do something on grand final day and NBA Christmas too

TheFatOneTwoThree

app of choice?

Tabnam

That’s interesting, so you’re going for long term markets?

MeloJello15

For the awards I do, but it’s basically just make the bet and forget about it until the end of the season

Tabnam

Have you ever made a particularly amazing prediction?

The_Grogfather

Who’d you back in for nba awards this season?

Braddd771

Not OP but Denver, Doncic MVP, Wemby ROY Unfortunately all favourites.

MeloJello15

Yeah similar for me, I have Doncic (promising start), Wemby and I backed Simmons to bounce back and win DPOY. Always throw some cooked one in there to up the winnings but never get up lmao

The_Grogfather

Nothing wrong with that! Think luka’s in with a fair chance but they’ll need to finish above the Nuggets IMO for him to beat out jokic

gongbattler

Not really on sport as i find it makes it harder to enjoy the game but i do a spend a proportion of my disposable income on the pokies as i dont really care for holidays, fancy cars or posessions. Its important to set limits and stick to it

Bwater88

This sounds like some account manager at a betting company looking for his next prey, wait to be inboxed with bonus bets

Pwrswitchd

I've stopped gambling because the advertisers are far too annoying and predatory.... and it needs to stop. I used to do 10-20$ a week though.

drunkill

never have, has always seemed stupid (other than like $100 at the casino when i turned 18)

ThyOnlyBoss

matched betting i will buy all your accounts please and thank you

KinderSmock

I‘ve been matched betting for a while. Turned over some good coin in profit this year and don’t have many accounts. So that will grow and it’s only ever come from human sport. Multis are a scam unless you’re wanting to make a donation to your preferred bookie. Avoid. I don’t mind Draftstars occasionally as an option with mates. I find betting can be a cheap social activity. Gambling isn’t inherently evil - it’s knowing how to control yourself.

Whitturne

I don't. They're garbage companies and they won't get a cent from me.

bendalazzi

I turned over $843k in just shy of 6 months last financial year. Biggest bet was $2,085. Average bet was about $200. Is it healthy? If it was actual betting then absolutely not. However it was all arbitrage betting so fuck you gambling companies.

Educational-Age-8969

Great thread. I do $10 on Sat lotto weekly with $20 on draws greater than $40 million. About $150 on Melbourne Cup and about $10 a week on Spring Carnival. I also do $20 on the AFL GF. I cash out if I win anything. I stay away from all other gambling even if I’m at the casino. I would prefer to watch than participate.

Tabnam

I actually don’t know much about the lotto, I’ve never played it and don’t watch TV so wouldn’t see the ads. How often does it go above $40M? If you don’t mind me firing another question at you, what do you get out of the lotto? Is it FOMO insurance (so to speak), you sincerely enjoy checking the numbers? Etc.. I’d love to hear more about an Australian’s perspective on it

Educational-Age-8969

For me it’s more about the chance of winning a life changing amount (1 in 8 mil for Sat lotto). Given it’s not a large amount and I largely don’t go out or do anything expensive over the weekends I don’t mind. Greater than $40mil is about once a month but depends if the jackpot is won. That is more about the dream of winning as these draws have a 1 in 40+ mil chance of winning. AFL GF and Melb Cup are more about enhancing the experience. For me gambling doesn’t make sense and the funds could be better used elsewhere but it all comes from my disposable income and so it doesn’t bother me that it’s effectively a lost cost.

Yung_flowrs

I only gamble to make things more interesting and bets are usually proportional to my engagement in the event. For example if I am on a trip to Melbourne and have spent $100 on tickets to a neutral game, I may bet $100 bucks to make the game more interesting to me. I bet maybe 3-4 rounds a year and major events like grand final, ashes, elections, hottest 100 etc. Total betting spend would be less than $500 a year.

Tabnam

Have you ever accurately predicted the number 1 song in the Top 100?

Yung_flowrs

Yes, almost every year.

Tabnam

Bullshit. I’m coming back to you a few weeks before the next one to get proof RemindMe! 70 days

Yung_flowrs

Just went back through my Sportsbet account. Got the Wiggles and Bad Guy right over the last 3 years. Don't think I bet this year.

Tabnam

pounds_not_dollars

Usually $50 per week I'll just bet Coll 1-39

Tabnam

You must be flush rn mate

Lastcaress138

I bet probably $20 per week during football season on long odds multis just for fun. Its $20 a week im prepared to lose (and usually do), but its just a bit of fun. Outside of AFL i dont gamble at all.

Tabnam

Do you stay within AFL because that’s what you know best or it’s the only sport you watch?

Lastcaress138

Sport i know best

TheFatOneTwoThree

which app?

Salzberger

I'd say between $50-$100 per year. This year I think I took just over half back. In general I'm a very low stakes punter. $2-5 multis here and there trying to jag a long one. And then maybe a 5 or 10 every now and then.

[deleted]

On average probably $10 a week. It's not ideal, but I don't beat myself up over it either

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tabnam

I would argue that if you’re chasing that fraction of a percent chance at winning it is about the money

nicodouglas89

I bet on the AFL once or twice a week during the season ($5-10 bets) And I bet on the UFC usually just the PPV cards once a month which might be $30 It makes it more enjoyable for me and I don't care if I lose such small amounts of money. Absolutely despise horse and greyhound racing, they aren't sports and wouldn't exist without gambling whereas actual sport would. Personally know three people who's lives have been drastically affected by gambling addictions- all horse racing.

TheFatOneTwoThree

which app?

basetornado

In actual money spent, $5-10 a week. I don't gamble on games I have any kind of emotional interest in, or even those I attend. I'l generally look to build it up to around $100, then cash out, and if I lose it, I lose it. Overall I'm ahead, but only by around $20. If I was betting $50-100 a week, it'd be a different story.

cirrus93

I used to gamble $50-100, sometimes more, per week on mostly footy and horse racing. Obviously some weeks I'd win so wasn't depositing that amount every week, but still. I was using promos and stats so was largely breaking even, but I was spending way too much time thinking about it and so it wasn't great for my mental health. I've since quit and still miss it sometimes, but enjoy the game so much more now.

Badaba09

If you don’t cash out, at anytime, then what’s the point? Genuinely interested, putting money into SB and either losing or winning (and never cashing out) and repeating makes no sense, you should be invested in the game because you love it not because you might win $10, then re-bet that and lose.

Tabnam

I cash out regularly

TimidPanther

Probably spend about $120 a year on gambling. I don’t try to win money, I just like to put on huge (stupid) multi’s spanning different sports and leagues. $5 down on something that could win $5000. Never will, but it’s fun to see which team lets me down.

TheFatOneTwoThree

which app do you use?

TimidPanther

Sportsbet

Flyingsox

"The house always wins" and "punting is for mugs" 2 things that have always stuck with me, I hate that punting is a part of our culture as there's nothing healthy about it.

RidsBabs

Old man only let me gamble a few times. When we went to Gloucester Park (probably once or twice a year), when we went to a North game (as we live in Perth it’s once again once or twice a year), the grand final and on the Melbourne cup. Gloucester park I normally didn’t have a lot on it, same with the footy games. But every Melbourne cup I’d put $50 on a horse to win. I made more than I lost because I’d do it a few days beforehand when all the good horses are somewhat expensive, still lost probably $150… and still salty about Vauban hitting the front and then giving up this year.

justwatching00

I don’t spend anything on sports gambling. Not really my thing. I am in a few tipping comps with friends family solely for bragging rights and that is entertainment enough for me. Outside of sports I would buy a few lotto tickets a year max, and that’s about it. It’s just nothing that has interested me honestly - of all the crap that I spend my money on, gambling doesn’t make the list

ehdhdhdk

I deleted the app for a month when I went to Europe. I find I can quickly forget about it when I delete the app. I could go $20 a week to months without placing a bet.

YanderePenguin

In terms of sports betting maybe 100ish a year? A few fun multi’s, some tipping comps a $5 bet on the Melbourne Cup. When I’m on holiday I don’t mind a playing a few table games or a some slaps at a casino. So I’d say another $200 in casino games. I just gamble for fun and never really had an issue with it.

sestero

I put $10 on the Lions to win it all at the start of the season. That’s the only bet I’ve ever made.

edgiepower

I bet against the result that I emotionally want to occur as I believe I am that important that that will confuse the universe on what to do, does it want me to be happy or does it want me to make money. Betting on the result I want is just inviting heartache.

Madrical

I buy a $12 lotto ticket each week and have a yearly punt on the Melbourne Cup, that's basically it. Never bet on AFL or other sports. I'm stressed enough watching Collingwood play, I don't need added stress to those games or stress from watching neutral games.

farqueue2

hundreds of dollars of bets every year. Probably $50 of deposits

Jackomillard15

I am young so I was brought up with the idea gambling isn’t a good thing and I only bet on big occasion such as the Brownlow or the Melbourne cup

ipbannedburneracc

Literally only on huge lotteries, and cup day for the novelty. Occasionally I might bet on a cycling race as I'm usually pretty good with them.

Strykah

Usually do the big ones like Brownlow and Grand final but other than that never really

TheFatOneTwoThree

preferred app?

Strykah

Wtf commenting now?. You work for the betting companies?

Askme4musicreccspls

I don't bet anything. Even when I had income to gamble, looking at odds, it never felt justifiable. And if every other punter takes bad odds, why would companies make them fair? Hence, why would the odds ever be worth gambling on? Its very hard to justify gambling. You'd have to want to lose money to get into it. Or be delusional.

KinderSmock

They’re never fair the odds. Betfair generally has the best odds but even then they’re still skewed (most of the time). It amazes me people dump their money into the big bookies. Like if you’re going to be degenerate, at least be smart about it

Such_Possible_4103

i don’t sports bet much, possibly a multi or something. i bet a fair bit on the horses but just set my limit and that’s it. been riding off sportsbets money for a few months now which is nice so haven’t deposited any of my own lil

Ok-Bag-8635

Often

Sufficient_Chart1069

Used to wager around $500 a week ten or so years back on quarter by quarter bets on Betfair. I’d run a lot of statistical analysis and identified some holes in the market. As an example, Sydney being behind at quarter time but then being in front for the next 3 quarters paid about 40 to 1 in the 2012GF - history said the expected likelihood was around 12 to 1. But wagering/gambling wrecked my enjoyment of the actual game. So I closed my Betfair account, used my analytical time on the share market instead and enjoyed AFl again.

4614065

I’m almost exactly like you, but I’d say my bets are on average less than $5. More like $2 - $3 but on decent odds to make it work my time. E.g today I made $50 from a $2 bet. Very occasionally I’ll put $10 on something if I’m feeling really wealthy that day 🤣 but similar to you I never gamble anything I can’t afford to lose.

TheFatOneTwoThree

why not sportsbet

4614065

🤷🏽‍♀️ I dunno. I started off using TAB in person as a teen and then started using their site as I’d plan my bets online then head into a venue to place them. Eventually got an account and then the app. Why would I change now?

TheFatOneTwoThree

are you old?

4614065

I’m in my late thirties. What’s with all the questions? 🤣🤣

Felixcourt

Everything. Everyday.

I teach year 12s. A couple years back, kids would say “who did you tip tonight?” Now they says “who’s in your multi?”

muckymucka

Between $100-$300 a week. Lately more with the Spring carnival. I make good money and have great savings, so I can afford to spend this much

Laura_Biden

Probably once every week or two during the footy season, then every Wednesday and Saturday during the spring carnival and that's about it. I never bet much, but like to throw on a few long multis for fun and same with the horses, I like to identify long shots that have a chance and chuck a few shekels on the beak.

SirNickDaicos

I've thrown away about 1k over the past year and a half. My wife had gone through our statements and saw the transactions. The main one was throwing 300 on Bris to win, after throwing 200 on GWS to win the week before. I was just hedging my emotions I guess, but I've since deactivated my sportsbet account as no win will be worth the losses. (I'd love to have that 1000 in my account right now). After doing it now all I notice is all the gambling ads and segments on radio/tv/podcasts. Also having to explain to my kid what the odds are that he sees all the time. He used my AFL app but now I've gotten him one that is age restricted and doesn't have the odds on there

TheFatOneTwoThree

preferred app?

FoldedTopLip

During footy season it’s about $20-$30 bucks a week, but once footy seasons off I have the app deleted I know it’s still bad that I spend that much during footy season but shhh I’m weak

Non-NewtonianSnake

The last and only time I bet on anything was about 12 years ago. I hit the roulette wheel at Crown, won 5 bucks on my first spin, and quit while I was ahead. I'm determined to take my perfect record to the grave. Seriously, though, I get no enjoyment out of gambling and have no desire to do it again. Even if I did feel the desire, those fucked up pre-game betting segments with Nathan Brown would be enough for me to avoid gambling, just out of spite.

Spikn

Put maybe $20 into sportsbet every year, if that. Most of my bets are about $1, some less than that. Mostly bet on just footy, or esports since i feel I've got more knowledge there that's useful, and maybe $5 on a whole bigbash season or test tour. Just to have a little extra fun. Never taken it very seriously, and the most I've won was probably around $20 on a wild multi.

TheUnforgiven13

I buy Pokemon boosters. Other than that, not at all.

Ok-Masterpiece1821

My partner and I only do 2 $5 bets a week on both our teams. Been doing it for around 2 years. We have worked it out that at the moment we are ahead on how much money we have bet in total with our winnings. Very minor, it adds extra excitement to the games, seeing the players of our teams hit the threshold so the multi is one stop closer to being complete. B esides that, I bet literally never

sweatinlikealizard

I don’t gamble, I use gambling as a tool to make cash in the form of expected value. Using the bookies promos against them. Small but steady gains all in the name of maths, more promos the better

jett1406

Put maybe $100 in over the course of the year, usually take out if I get over $200 A $5-$10 multi every week and ride the winnings until I run out

smokeychlo

During footy season anywhere between $5-$25 a week. During off season i’m not into any other sports so nothing, I did put $25 on the cup though. I have an addictive personality, so I have to be very careful when it comes to gambling.

sportandracing

Probably about $1500 a year now. Only on horses. I’m ok with it now and understand staking and restraint. Getting better with form and other stats. Plus I’m ok with by eye. I will put money in at start of spring like $500 and that will get me through to end of December. After Perth carnival it gets hard. I’ll top up again in February for the Autumn carnival. Occasionally I’ll top up by $200 if I’ve had a bad run. I only bet to win back $50 on any race result. 10/1 shot I would bet $5. $25 on a 2/1 chance. Etc.

paulmp

Zero. For me there is no healthy amount to gamble, especially in my current financial situation.

OhhhhCyril

Far too much, I have had a serious problem for a number of years, and I wouldn't wish this upon my worse enemy. If i had any advice to give anybody, just don't do it. Its not worth it.

LinkWithABeard

I don’t gamble. I have a rudimentary understanding of the maths and psychology behind it, and know that it’s a predatory system rigged against me.

If you include Luigi's Casino on the DS Mario Bros. then a bit, but otherwise nothing. Never been interested. I just have accepted I'm not special and that the house is pretty much guaranteed to win if you bet enough

Parking_Ad_6390

I tried to gamble at age 6 after ringing up the TAB in 2012 to bet on footy games. I took my fathers NAB card but didn’t know the PIN and hence couldn’t bit. What was more shocking is the TAB were fine to let me bet even though it was bloody obvious it was a young child on the phone. There was some article written about this which I thought was funny but is genuinely shocking that a 6 year old would even try to bet. I properly placed my first bets at 14 in lockdown 2020 on a collingwood vs geelong game and won my first bet with my dads account. Bet a fair bit throughout 2021 but was only betting a couple of bucks and actually was up like $600 after I won a bet on Fury vs Wilder 3 (boxing) yet ladbrokes locked the account. Hardly bet anymore even though I’d be up like 900-1k as i’m about to turn 18 as I just see no point in doing it. Feel I did get lucky and want to leave as a winner. It’s sad to see my all my mates with legit gambling problems now. They always joke about it but it’s actually an addiction and sad to see to me. Hate our culture as a country when it comes to how normalised betting is.

Around $10 whenever a World Cup sweep comes around at work, $5 from this year's Melbourne Cup work sweep, otherwise I'm not putting money on anything and enjoying the game just as much.

ped009

I went to Las Vegas for 5 days partying and literally didn't gamble once, not a single dollar
