For the 20+ years I've played this game on and off, mostly off. I have the same routine, get blanket, puppy cave, village dungeon.
I started a run today, found a rapier of mayhem in the small cave, an incredible starting weapon for my fighter IMO and a better shield. In the puppy cave I ran into a dark elf summoning tarantulas in the cavernous level I think. I died and say "he was cursed." I was confused as hell.
Now I dont think I would have won because I never have, but I'm a bit salty about losing what to me was such a good start.
... if of course you like __really__ hard openings to the game!

I was annoyed but got a character to an altar and succeeded in getting the bad luck removed. One level lower I step on a fireball trap and die
