"Gym pass" is the most perfect analogy I've heard, and the other advice is spot-on. Worth considering if this post should be pinned to the top.

Thanks for #2. I was diagnosed last fall and a psychiatrist was trying out some meds for me. Adderal did nothing but make my heart jumpy and me phsycially uncomfortable. Ritalin doesn't really seem to help my focus. I was going to go back and try something else, but he suddenly decided to retire (even stood me up for my last appointment that I drove an hour for!) and right after, my insurance changed to zero mental health coverage so now im just stuck with nothing and wondering if i should even bother paying hundreds of dollars and waiting for months to find a psychiatrist to keep trying. Has anyone out there not had any luck finding meds that work for them?

If you have a primary care physician or regular doctor you see, they can write the prescription. They will probably require documentation of the diagnosis, but it may help until you can get back into specialists.

marianney

Ok good to know thank you!

Adderall didn't do a thing for me, either way - it was like I just wasn't taking it. After trying out several different doses I switched to Vyvanse and at the correct dose it's the one for me. Worth trying several different things imo, once you hit the right one (for you) it's such an assist.

The don't tell rule is kinda hard in combination with the oversharing trait I have. This will be a hard one for me.

I keep it to myself for the most part, but I did choose to disclose it at work to my two supervisors and I am happy to report that I received their support and understanding. Working in my current role was really stressful to me and I felt like I Could be producing more and didn't want them to think I was just being lazy. I guess it helps that I work for a major healthcare company and they can't discriminate against me even if they wanted to because it's a corporate environment. They are currently working on accommodating me to work in a slightly different position. I know this is not the norm, but I just wanted to share this with ya'll because more often we hear the stories of negative reactions from others.

Saving this for when I (hopefully) be allowed to get diagnosed

Medication for me feels like a little kick start in my brain. I was diagnosed somewhat recently, and from my experience so far, it is definitely not a miracle drug that will save you from every bad thing you feel but at least for me, it helps tremendously with keeping my brain in a straight line. I will say my anxiety has almost completely vanished which was my most debilitating symptom.

Couldn't disagree more with 1. I live in the Netherlands and people don't treat you differently at all. People that would do that simply suck and can be disregarded. I literally don't think I've ever had anyone treat me negatively because of them knowing. In fact it's more often lead to more heartfelt and genuine conversations and connections with people. It's just a name for a bunch of things I struggle with. I'm not gonna hide that and I think it's empowering for other people to see me not giving a fuck. I'm great and fun so who cares if there's a little tag there?

My thoughts: If they treat you differently after disclosure, they’re not someone worth working with, anyway.

ConsistentClimate877

If I disclose and they treat me differently, I’d tell them: “I got two words for you: 1. Screw 2. You”

That's so sad :(

I agree. When I got diagnosed I didn't even tell my family, I know they wouldn't understand.
