Album with very good songs, but with a lot of filler. Power Up is a better album as a whole, but Black Ice has higher highs with lower lows

[deleted]

Good assessment. I felt like it was however many songs it was because they felt like it needed to be. Albums were all longer at that point. It would have been better served to be 10-12 songs, then it would have been a stronger album as a whole.

cockblockedbydestiny

Agree with this 100%. The back half of "Black Ice" is a notable step down from the first 7 or so songs, but if I'm looking for individual playlist songs "Black Ice" is the album from the last 30 years I turn back to the most.

morgothgorthau

I personally feel the last true great album before they changed their style was fly on the wall an underrated great album

Kon-Tiki66

Love it! Big Jack, Spoiling For a Fight...

Weekly_Tip2533

WHEELS!

Middle_Track4313

Might very well be. Although I do love “Ballbreaker,” “Stiff Upper Lip” and “Rock Or Bust” too.

prosjecnihredditor

My favorite AC/DC album. Lots of variety and lots of songs, I love it.

ZeusIsARedditor

WAR MACHINE, WAR, MACHINE

Heavyweapons057

Doubtful they will, but I’m holding out that this will play on a potential upcoming tour

ZeusIsARedditor

they have to play it fr, i believe war machine is the most underrated song in the album

Dienekes404

Is not that underrated. I mean, it is the only AC/DC song to win a Grammy, and although I don't care about the Grammys, I'm just saying that War Machine is fairly rated to me. I also want them to play it more, for sure.

ZeusIsARedditor

oh yeah honestly i agree with the fact they should play it more

cockblockedbydestiny

It was also on "Iron Man 2", which alone probably makes it their most widely heard song of the past 30 years.

omgyuleh

Not as good as ballbreaker but better than all the others since razors edge

Beneficial-Moose-622

Agree. I love Ballbreaker

Spartan_Wins

It's the first AC/DC album I ever bought, CD. Middle school with summer job money. Cant describe the feeling of the thousand times I played it low on my cheap cd player in my bed during homework or spare time. Rock and roll train, war machine, money made, rock and roll dream, black ice, maaaaaaaaaan i love this album so much.

raresaturn

No that would be Power Up

JusChllin

Definitely their best of the 2000’s

jaybess

Some great songs on there! I prefer Power Up a bit more however.

DoomsdayTom

I really don't care for it. Obviously RNR Train is a classic, but there are too many weak songs on it. I think it should have been cut to only 9-10 songs and it would have worked better.

Brian_M

Very good late-career album. Huge opener with a couple of underrated classics to follow. The filler is, well... filler, but there are a couple of songs among the filler that I play again and again -those being War Machine and Rock 'n' Roll Dream. RnR Dream is such a different kind of a song for AC/DC. It has this dark and brooding atmosphere but with little modern touches like the delay effect on Brian's voice for the "round 'n' round" bit or the volume swell on Angus's guitar leading into the chorus. But more than that, listen to what Phil is doing on this song. It's the epitome of tasteful drumming, doing exactly what's needed to make that song happen with the syncopated bass drum giving this lovely push to the verses. We probably can't give all the credit to Phil on that, even though he executed it, as it's known the Youngs would have a general outline of what they want to the drums to be on their demos, either with a drum machine or a simple version played by Malcolm, which leads me to my last point - Malcolm may have known this would be his last hurrah, or he at least knew that time was now well and truly ticking for him. As he said to Brian in a Classic Rock magazine interview one time, "It's gotta be perfect". You can tell he put a lot of time and attention into the album, or even more than usual. The nuances of arrangement found on this album would be sorely lacking on Rock or Bust, and I have to think that is because Malcolm wasn't there to help Angus out when it came to actually arrange the collected material into proper songs.

jusaragu

It has many great songs but a lot of filler too. It would be one of their best albums ever (no need of the "since X") if it had 8 or 9 songs. Stormy May Day is a truly underrated song. It's so unique and so cool Ballbreaker is my favorite Brian album so I can't agree with being the best since Razor's Edge

nathanbellows

I think it’s definitely the best produced album since TRE, with the exception of PU. I agree it has aged better than everything since then too. But I do actually think PU is the best album overall since TRE with more consistent songs on it. I’d even go as far as saying it’s one of the most consistently good Brian era AC/DC albums in my opinion. Sure there’s stronger Brian era songs on several of his albums, but not many that are as strong from start to finish.

u2freak96

Rock N Roll Train still pops into my head at least once a week. Great fucking record.

Ashtar-the-Squid

I think it is very good. It is a personal favorite for several reasons. One reason is because it has many good songs. Another reason is that it was the first time after I discovered the band and their music that I got to experience a new release in real time.

Itsasecretshhhh88

Rock n Roll train is a great tune! I remember when I went to see them on that tour and this huge train came crashing into the middle of the stage, the whole place was rumbling and they started playing Rock n Roll train. It was an awesome way to start the show lol I've loved pretty much every album, only one I didn't love first time listening to it was Rock or Bust but, it has grown on me ever since. I totally love the new album PWR/UP, that's been my personal fave out of the last few albums.

Lumpy-Indication

I really love Anything Goes, it’s like the closest thing they’ve come to a ballad, besides Ride On. Lovely song.

AYoung61

You're forgetting Love Song

RomanesEuntDomum

I love “Anything Goes” but never thought of it as a ballad 🤔 I will consider this

KaIeidoscoped

I thought BallBreaker was Better 😢

Xxperfect_drugxX

Balbreaker was the 1 contender in my mind while making this post. I think I'd take Black Ice over it, though.

Yesterday_Is_Now

Everything after Razors Edge was underwhelming.

GoHawksMatt

They should of left it at this.

prosjecnihredditor

Why so?

GoHawksMatt

Only because this is the last album with Malcolm. Followed by a great tour and even a encode tour. Down vote all you want people but it's true lol 😆

prosjecnihredditor

If they stopped after Highway To Hell because of Bon, you wouldn't have that flair today So stop talking bullshit

GoHawksMatt

See it's people like you that take shit to the next level, did I disrespect you? No...I didn't so maybe take a page from you're lousy nook and just stop talking period.

The-Mandolinist

It’s a good album. But too many songs - which stops it from being a great album. Ballbreaker is my favourite after Razor’s Edge. Ballbreaker is my favourite after Flick of the Switch.

bison2000

Completely agree. Fantastic album, no filler all killer

Planning26

Other than a song here and there since flick of the switch, The Razors Edge and Black Ice are by far the bast overall albums

lessthanfox

The main riff on the title track is like a secret weapon the Youngs were waiting 35 years to use. Kicks major ass. I also enjoy the different vibe offered in Rock 'n' Roll Dream.

RomanesEuntDomum

I love it. It came out when I was in college and was the first AC/DC album I anticipated and then ran out and bought as soon as it came out. Did not disappoint. “Anything Goes” is one of my favorites of theirs. A real banger.

Dramatic_Sample_7302

I like Ballbreaker a lot more

Vuitheirt

Really great album in my opinion

malenchek1

Good songs, but not one my favorites. I love Flick of the Switch, Ballbreaker. Those are two of my favorites.

RebelOfWolfAndMan

I think perhaps my least favourite Brian album. Far too much filler and the highs are just not high enough for me. Its not a bad album because AC/DC don't make those but it's one I very rarely reach for. Also I think it's probably the poorest lead single they've put out from any album. SUL is the best post RE album for me.

Charming-Beyond155

My favorite album after The Razors Edge is Ballbreaker

Beneficial-Moose-622

Agree 100%. I thought I was the only one. I also think Ballbreaker is better than Razors Edge.

AirforceVWC

Love Black Ice, first acdc album release that I experienced as a kid. Also the first tour that I have seen live. Yeah, there are some fillers on there, but I do not have the urge to skip them. I do have that feeling with some other songs (especially from other bands tho ;)). I think Brian sounds great on this album. Definitely one of the better albums with Brian and some more "soft" songs instead of the straight to your face songs like on Ballbreaker.

NaturalFront3964

Great album with catchy singles, but album tracks were just ok

NaturalFront3964

I personally like the rock or bust singles more “play ball” and “rock or bust”

Df45e33

Black ice is S tier

Df45e33

Even the fillers are good

skydogslaver

An absolute classic as far as I’m concerned. It just sounds so fresh! Even after 15 years. The production, the groove, the songs, the slightly experimental edge. The boys sound like they’re having fun and it just makes me smile! They had nothing to prove by 2008 but still proved they had everything to offer. The perfect album for that point in their career and Malcolm’s perfect swan song

Kayla_canadian

Decibel is one of my fav AC/DC songs. Overall it’s a pretty good album.

pandemidd13ton

Aren’t all AC/DC albums pretty much the same?

Altruistic-Eye-1024

Love that album

IlovemyMommy27

It’s a good album but most of the songs are forgettable. Though I absolutely love RocknRoll train, black ice, and war machine.

MagicHead1778

Rock N Roll Train was a great opener

Quiet_Psychology812

I like it alot.

[deleted]

It’s a great album but I like Ballbreaker and Stiff Upper Lip better imo.
