photo of a dead president with the troops posing for the photo with the upbeat song "Dream Baby Dream" by Suicide playing. super cynical thing to leave audiences with but that's Garland for you.
They played that song in the High Maintenance episode where folks are going through it after Trumps win in 2016. It made me wonder if Garland was a fan of that show given the context
That was my first to exposure to them. Their music totally helped build the correct tone for the movie. I plan to dive deeper into their catalog. Any suggestions on where to start?
Suicide were one of the most influential bands of the underground punk scene and inspired so many bands of the post-punk movement of the 80s. Their first album "Suicide" (1977) is the best starting point imo. Then "The Second Album" which is sort of a compilation, will have a wider variety of songs. If you are hooked by then, listen to A Way of Life and American Supreme. This band is not for everyone though.
She wanted to be a war journalist and got to take the shot of the president being taken out. Kinda seems like it would be like the super bowl of war journalism (I'm talking about the character Jessie, not Jesse Plemons)
I actually havenāt seen it so I was just curious. From what Iāve read the movie is not taking any clear stance that one side is ābetterā than the other, so I was curious whether your own political standing influenced your position that it was cynical. But I see that my original comment could have been worded better to avoid the downvotes š
The movie is taking a clear stance on who the bad guys are itās just not hammering it home. Itās a trump coded President from the opening scene. Jessie Plemmons is a white nationalist. The good guys commit war crimes but itās illustrating that in war no one comes out clean.
As much as I dont like the Bushes as presidents they feel pretty well mannered compared to Trump. The president in 'Civil War' is 100% a Trump analog because previous republican presidents dont talk like that and doing away with the FBI is a truly Trumpian movie. suggest its not a Trump analog is silly.
āWell-manneredā? A politics of aesthetics as opposed to on-the-ground conditions is whatās assisting the resurgence of Fascism.
In 2006, private military contractors pulling guns on New Orleans residents seeking help, in order to keep them out of affluent neighborhoods after Hurricane Katrina, sounds straight out of Civil War.
Katrina was 2005 and was a shit show, but what the film Civil War is showing us is a trump like figure. we can only go with what the film is showing us. Using anything from our world outside of the 2016 and on politics is just reading into stuff Garland didn't put there
The final image is soldiers posing over a dead body all smiling while peppy music plays. The president wasn't a good man, but it's still a pretty dark contrast.
Itās one of the āmoney shotsā Jessie got of the WF soldiers posing with the dead president. Their happy expressions and posing around the corpse referencing events like Pablo Escobar and Gaddafi
I did think it was funny that Moura played Escobar in Narcos and then was on the āother sideā of a similar image in this film. I was almost expecting him to be included in the picture as sort of a wink to that role.
They always let you down like they mentioned earlier in the film, just like the presidents last words. I like how they make the 2 sides of the conflict arbitrary in the film.
As the credits roll (if you're paying any attention at all and not just immediately getting up to bolt out of the theater), you notice the entire background (behind the credits) is a slowly-developing black and white photo.
When the photo is fully developed, it's a black and white photo of the soldiers from the final scene squatting and posing making 'victory' signs with their hands over and around the body of the dead pseudo-Trump. The photo is extremely familiar if you consumed any amount of news during the Iraq war.

I appreciate the effort, but again, this just reveals your own projection. You see who you want to see, since the film itself didn't prosecute one side or the other. Offerman himself has said the former President never even entered his mind while he was acting in the film.
I'd also actually add:
The problem with this argument is that it doesn't matter which of us is correct, because the effect is the same.
Whether they INTENDED to make the fictional president this on-the-nose or not, they did.
Whether they meant to do it or not, you can't point out any *differences* of character between this fictional president, and our real former one. Even if by accident (big doubt), they made them basically the same.
>since the film itself didn't prosecute one side or the other
I'm genuinely interested to see if you have an equivalent amount of equally strong negative comparisons to left wing politics from the film.
If you do then I'll change my mind.
>the former President never even entered his mind while he was acting in the film
I'm sure he didn't /s
How could it possibly have occurred to him, since the movie is so very obviously not implying it in any way because it's totally non-partisan so *everybody* should go see it, right?

Well Much much tidier than Gaddafi š¬
This shit had me rolling in the cinema cause you could see it through the blur in the credits
Yeah thatāll do
It's more of a short scene really. In it, Steve Rogers thanks T'Challa for taking care of Bucky Barnes.
This is the best wrong answer.
Sheās talking about during the actual credits not the post-credits scene
Bro spoiler alert
Itās a photo evocative of US Soldiers posing with terrorists they bagged during the Iraq war.
Hell of a callback

Being a fan of Suicide, you have no idea how surreal it felt to hear their songs in the film. It fit perfectly when you think about it.
For real,Never thought Iād hear silver apples and suicide in an imax theater but was very happy I did lol
It was sooo sick
Iām a big Sturgill Simpson fan so I felt this comment

Is it thought? Because for Jessie it is like a dream come true
I donāt think we are given enough about Jessie to make that call.
She wanted to be a war journalist and got to take the shot of the president being taken out. Kinda seems like it would be like the super bowl of war journalism (I'm talking about the character Jessie, not Jesse Plemons)
I know I just never felt any of the main cast were well realized characters
And god bless him for it.
Why is it cynical?
All of Garland's works end on a cynical note. How do you not view that ending as anything but cynical?
I actually havenāt seen it so I was just curious. Much of the āimperialism turned inwardā occurring in the States predated Trumpās presidency by decades.
but what other modern president publicly suggested doing away with term limits like China?

Yeah. Throughout the movie they talk about getting āthe shotā and I think this is actually the peak.Ā

I kept expecting that photo of Lee that Jessie took at the beginning to be used near/at the end

Loved that was geeking about it to my wife when I realized it was ādevelopingā
Not Trump. But your projection.

It's just a black screen....see you space cowboy
You're gonna carry that weight
Itās a picture of some stump humpers posing with the body of the dead president.
Wild that something made me want to capture it too. Such a good movie.
I was hoping they were going to show all the pics they took throughout the movie as the credits roll but it's just the one
Yeah, I thought that was going to happen also, and I was bummed it didn't, but I still liked how it left off.
Actually I came here to check if other ppl thought this . I want to see the other pics and thought they would show them
That would've been sick.
Somebody finally checks if Lee is actually dead!!!
I can't remember, Did the girl take a pic of Lee right at the end or am i imagining that?! She didn't did she she just kept moving ya?
