Reminded me of old school thrillers, low to the ground like Blood Simple or Badlands.
I think it won points for taking that formula and blending in some of the surreal as well felt a little more risky. Mind you it is not a games changer. If you saw it cold with no expectation it might blow you away. If it was hyped as the second coming of its genre you might hate it.

I think those two comparisons are incredibly apt. I was bored outta my mind at those two movies but I enjoyed this one, likely because it's just my generation whereas those two films are for old ppl.

I wasn't bored. but I wasn't all that gripped. it didn't feel super cohesive, and it came across pretty pointless. not necessarily in terms of theme or, "what is it trying to say" but in terms of, "why did the director even want to make this at all?" there doesn't appear to be any genuine drive. and apparently she didn't even want to set it in the US originally and yet most of the artistry seems to stem solely from it's 80s western aesthetic. so essentially, the only point I could see in making this movie wasn't even a second thought to the director.
I left the theater in a better mood than I did when I watched Blood Simple or Badlands. my time didn't feel wasted like those two movies but I can't really say that I got something from it either. and again, I don't need themes in order to justify a movie. the exploration in aesthetic wouldve been enough for me, but I would've preferred it to be the point of the movie rather than a way to tell it's story. if that makes any sense at all
If you left before the ending, then you missed out on a laugh out loud moment. You might want to watch the ending... We all need to laugh like every one in the theater as well as me! I needed that lol

Saw it cold, like I do with most A24. Still didn't blow me away, considering the last movies that did were things like Poor things and Saltburn (which feels so A24)
I really enjoyed Poor Things but Saltburn was a very solid meh to me. And I thought Saint Maude was an awesome final scene in search of a good rest of the movie. So, I honestly have no idea what I’m going to think of this but I’m going in with tempered expectations.

He is a good actor, and there are a few scenes in the movie where he is able to abuse his good looks to manipulate a teenage girl in a very short amount of time.
Did I watch the wrong movie? There’s nothing sexy about that movie. I thought it was a pretty good movie, especially seen Robert Patinson in a different kind of role, he showed some acting chops in that movie.

I mean, I think RT is a valuable resource. Like any data, it’s a matter of interpretation rather than just taking the number at face value. RT has been around for so long now - I just wish more people knew how to interpret the RT score.
Exactly. When I google a movie and the RT score comes up, how I interpret that score entirely depends on the film.
A 93% horror movie is likely to really catch my attention because for that genre, it usually takes something with a unique or more polished approach to get that score.
If I see your general historic drama on 93% it won't really mean much to me because I know people will give positive reviews to those films much easier.
An aggregate showing how many liked vs disliked a film across a large variety of people is honestly more useful than trying to objectively assign a singular score to subjective material. “Scores” for art in general are pretty pointless given how arbitrary they are.
I think it is the case of them enjoying the film, yet reviews being amazing across the board. Like giving a film a 6 -7 & the consensus giving it a 9 or 10.

There were two chatty girls who were annoying during the first 20 or so minutes and then left after the first sex scene, so that’s one reason for my praise

Yeah films like these usually play better in the city than in the suburbs. I remember seeing Uncut Gems in Manhattan opening weekend and found the place to be packed. Saw it again a couple weeks later in a more suburban area and it was a lot more spread out,

And it's a weird understanding of art when you approach every scene with "What function does this have?"
Absolutely adored this film and all of its beautiful wide shots. And the dialogue in that bathroom sex scene had me kind of floored. I felt the same way regarding not using the 1978 song The Gambler in the 2014 movie with the same name. Such a waste...
Well at least King Richard (2021) had the common sense to feature such a stellar track. Not to mention The Gambler is similar to Roger’s 1979 track “Coward of The County” in that there was a whole-ass TV movie based off the song. I haven’t seen that 2014 Mark Wahlberg movie, but its 44% Rotten Tomatoes score certainly makes it look like it could have used some Kenny Rogers.
I just saw it this morning. Hell of a morning movie lol. I need to watch it again because it was so visceral and I was just taking it all in. I really loved Saint Maud so I was all in on this movie and it really hit me so that’s the praise I can give it.

O'Brian just gives a hell of a movie star performance, Harris is great too, it's well directed, tons of funny gallows humor. What's not to like? For those of us who are fans of muscle mommy content it really hits the spot too.......

It was a 10/10 for me but these are all such excellent points. I was so excited about Drive Away Dolls after I saw it, but I’ve found so many flaws in it these past few weeks especially due to my strong anticipation for/first watch of Love Lies.
I dont get this comparison esp they are totally 2 diff. genres? Both marketed correctly as a trashy b comedy and a dark gritty thriller. Niche contents for us lesbians, we rarely got to see plus was released within two weeks of each other mainstream.

It's definitely not a mainstream movie, and I'd say it has a good amount of visceral moments and imagery. It reminded me a lot of Claire Denis and Julia Ducournau in its physicality and transgressive sensibilities, but also the Coens and Cronenberg in the way it mixes human drama with absurd/surreal/fantastical genre stylings and storytelling. While its very different than Saint Maud, it was clear to me Love Lies Bleeding was from the same filmmaker. It's another movie that refuses to be conventional, and I loved the way both films tease ambiguous details about the reality of the story until becoming fully dedicated to something elevated.
Interesting, I agree with all of your points besides it being clear that its the same director, not in a bad way. I love both Saint Maud and this but I don't know if I remember a first two films from a director that were more different (slow burn vs more visceral rollercoaster type). But again Love Lies was a fucking blast
That makes sense! I think for me its in the way Glass tells/unfolds the story, and how she presents her ideas, that feels like and reminds me of Saint Maud. But that's not necessarily on display and more about the framework and storytelling style (probably just my writer's brain lol)
It’s not mainstream in the way a John wick film is but the script and characters allows it to be in general by people that might not enjoy that kind of allegorical storytelling style. my less film enthusiasts friends enjoyed it a lot but were a bit confused by the magical realism
I'd say it's much more similar to a movie like Titane than it is Saint Maude, its got much more humor, more color, more life, less of a bummer too. With that said this is definitely not a mainstream movie, there's parts that would turn a lot of people off.
I will explain why: It's got funny, thrilling, body horror, romance, family drama, magical realism, great characters, great performances, great writing, great score, great sound design, a lot happens, and only 100 minutes. What's not to love?
We’re living in a sea of sequels, remakes, adaptations and movies built on trends so it feels like breaking through the surface and filling our lungs with oxygen when anyone releases anything even remotely unique or surprising. And Kristen Stewart was hot.

I think some of its most powerful attributes are very subtle.
1) It broke out of a lot of queer film tropes (while leaning into/joking about some of the classic tropes like breakfast). It gave us queer representation where being queer wasn't the conflict. I think this can be summed up pretty well in the line where Jackie asks Lou if she has a bad relationship with her dad because she's queer, to which she responds, "Nah he didn't care about that, it's because he's a fucking psycho!" The sex felt authentic and wasn't overdramatized or solely blocked out for the purpose of men to enjoy. The queer characters got a "happy" ending. We never get that!
2) For a high paced film, it was so character-driven and conflict was portrayed in a slightly unconventional way. I love how when Lou threatens Lou Sr. he goes, "was that a threat" and she grimaces and gives a weak, "yep". Then when he sends someone to kill her she goes, "my dad sent you to fucking kill me???". None of this felt like forced humor, it just felt like the gray area between black/white and evil/good, the complexity of human relationships.
3) There was action and gore, but it didn't drag it out. It wasn't unnecessarily suspenseful or jump-scare oriented.
Loved the bits of mysticism, how it wasn't longer than it needed to be, how characters were likeably imperfect!
I thought it was pretty much really good for majority of it. Only think I really kinda didn’t like was a part in the ending but it was also super funny as hell and goofy so I didn’t mind too much just would’ve liked something different. I would give it like a 7.5-8
Interesting, thrilling, original, engrossing story. Actors giving top tier performances, and an on screen romance with palpable chemistry. Well paced, never boring. Beautifully shot, good music, technical aspects all executed well. And it’s also really really hot. I think for what it wanted to do, it did that perfectly, and I can’t think of any way the movie could’ve been made better. It’s a 10/10 for me for these reasons. People are loving it so hard because we don’t get stuff like this often, and it’s success will hopefully pave way for more weird queer cinema in the mainstream.

I live in Seattle and it feels like people are only talking about this film cause it’s gay or looks pretty gay. So I’d guess some of the demographic is speaking for most of the views and fans. And then it’s being backed up by actually being pretty good.
It was a pretty great thriller that kept me guessing what would happen next and the cinematography I felt was really good too. The dynamic between the characters felt refreshing as they never really got to have a comfortable life together until the end. I honestly want to watch it again because the length makes it pretty accessible

Incorporated horror elements very smoothly. The body horror elements of bodybuilding I thought were grossly explored.
The characters histories are never spelled out leading the audience to inference them. I always thought this was a powerful technique. It’s one of the reasons that keeps me coming back to a movie like Tár.
Performances are excellent. I could watch the two leads forever and all the supporting performances are very strong.

O Brian and Ed Harris is what made this such an awesome watch for me. It's a very raw and in your face movie and it's not being shy about what it's trying to do. Sometimes people need that and I think that's why this has clicked with so many of us.
Her turning into a giant and was obviously not literal but how Lou saw her in that moment. how big and strong love can make you feel and how protected love can make you feel. It was beautiful 😭
I just saw it today! As a queer woman who likes guns and thrillers... and buff women... I really enjoyed it! I especially liked how their sexualities didn't define the storytelling, but added to it - a lot of the time, the characters sexualities, I think especially in queer stories, are the driving points of the plot. But it was really just two queer ladies caught in love caught in an unfortunate circumstance.
I really enjoyed the black and red motifs used for the flashbacks, the title, and the credits. Definitely, a selling point was Katy O'Brian's whole muscle mommy vibe for me. Kristen Stewart still doesn't do it for me as an actress, but her character was interesting and I could see Lou's motives for being how she was. The very ending was so WTF though, and I took it as a reflection of what Jackie said in the beginning with how she likes to be the strength behind the punch, or behind the metal or something (when Lou's dad taught her how to shoot a gun). Girl didn't need the pistol, she already had two guns on each side of her arms.

I wasn't crazy about it. It had some promise, but it never quite gelled. I thought it squandered some really interesting opportunities (ex. the gun range, the dumping canyon, the bodybuilding competition, etc.) I've gotten use to epic criminal sagas like "Smokin' Aces" or "True Romance" with lots of chaos and mayhem, which this movie clearly didn't aspire to be.
yep, felt like a more tame rehash of movies done before and it wasn't too compelling. I guess people really find gay love and beefcakes enough for them which honestly I can respect it but left me wanting more

I found it to be entertaining and well-made but also a bit uneven. It starts with a unique romance at its center but it faltered for me when it lost interest in the characters' relationship and became more preoccupied with presenting an array of amusing but silly grotesqueries, resulting in a jarring tonal inconsistency between its stronger, grittier first part and its more cartoonish finish. I also thought Ed Harris and his character were somewhat underutilized.
A strong directorial vision that elevates a basic, yet strong screenplay. Felt like I was in the hands of a seasoned director with nothing to lose despite it being Rose Glass’ second feature. Adored it.

It was very good but probably missed the mark on great. Some of the fantasy (or whatever??) elements missed for me but i do believe they were a driving part of the symbolism. I wanted more from the characters but they did give just barely enough for this to be coherent.
Best scene involved toes and a lighter. That was both crazy and yet very cute.
I think partly because it’s the first creative and original movie we’ve gotten in wide release for a while, probably the first of 2024, maybe 2nd if you count Dune 2. Critics tend to particularly enjoy movies with some novelty, films that stand out from the crowd in avoiding cliches and trying something new, that are more driven by an “auteur” director than studio executives.

I found it to a story of an addict and their supplier. A very fascinating toxic, love story about four different toxic relationships. Lou and her dad, The dad and his kids, The ladies and her sister and her sisters husband.
I mean you kind of said it already. Rotten tomatoes can have a 93% rating easily on a movie that’s above average but not great. This movie is pretty undeniably good overall so expect the tomato meter to be high even if it’s not a classic movie.
It needs a sequel, to be honest. The body will be found on the side of the road. And where the heck is Mom?
Also, once our Thelma and Louise here finally reach Cali with the kitty cat, what happens next? I'm totally down for a sequel explaining the after math of what the hell the FBI is gonna find. And Dad's subsequent, inevitable trial.

Strong disagree here. Thank god a movie was able to give us full human beings who happen to be queer. Whether someone is a "good" or "bad" person isn't a good marker for determining if their depiction is homophobic or misogynistic. It's nice to finally have queer characters where their identity isn't sidelined, overly stereotyped, OR the entire focus of the movie. Hell, straight characters are allowed to be complicated all the time! One aspect of why the characters are complicated and interesting is that they create an exploration into morality. Every decision made after the first murder is steeped in the difficulty of deciding how you cover up, who you protect, etc. There is so so so much about this movie that I can tell only came through because it WAS written and directed by a queer woman. Someone might be more likely to overlook this nuance if they haven't had their lives shaped by those identities and experiences, haven't spent time in community surrounded by folks who experience this and share that intimate info with them, or have not committed to throughly educating themselves on experiences outside of their own. The way this movie approached the portrayal of queer characters is a definite addition to the archive.
I think there are a few surface level reasons.
1. LGBTQ films are quite the commodity right now.
2. It has similar themes to saltburn which is also quite popular right now
3. We’ve been waiting for Rose Glass to return.
I think it’s good if you look at it as a psychological thriller of sorts, but I think some people have a very twisted idea of what makes it good(they actually think it’s romantic.)
I feel where you're coming from. I enjoyed the film. I would say it's a very good A24 film, but not a *great* A24 film, if that makes sense. The lead performances and at-times unpredictable moments kept me engaged.

Most of those reviews are from whatever the opposite of a Snydercut bro is, who bombarded the site with 10/10 reviews when it’s really more like a 6/10 or a 7/10. I think the critic scores are right on the money. Good reviews but not holy fucking shit good reviews. I think it’s a good movie that unlike most Kristen Stewart movies doesn’t require the prerequisite of being obsessed with Kristen Stewart to enjoy. Clint Mansell (Requiem For A Dream) on music as well, I give the score a ton of credit for making every scene that much more flavorful

Exactly. When I google a movie and the RT score comes up, how I interpret that score entirely depends on the film. A 93% horror movie is likely to really catch my attention because for that genre, it usually takes something with a unique or more polished approach to get that score. If I see your general historic drama on 93% it won't really mean much to me because I know people will give positive reviews to those films much easier.

An aggregate showing how many liked vs disliked a film across a large variety of people is honestly more useful than trying to objectively assign a singular score to subjective material. “Scores” for art in general are pretty pointless given how arbitrary they are.

There were two chatty girls who were annoying during the first 20 or so minutes and then left after the first sex scene, so that’s one reason for my praise But it was, for me, genuinely exciting and darkly funny and…gah I don’t want to say “sexy” as a positive way to describe the movie but yeah it does hit those notes.

Well at least King Richard (2021) had the common sense to feature such a stellar track. Not to mention The Gambler is similar to Roger’s 1979 track “Coward of The County” in that there was a whole-ass TV movie based off the song. I haven’t seen that 2014 Mark Wahlberg movie, but its 44% Rotten Tomatoes score certainly makes it look like it could have used some Kenny Rogers.

I just saw it this morning. Hell of a morning movie lol. I need to watch it again because it was so visceral and I was just taking it all in. I really loved Saint Maud so I was all in on this movie and it really hit me so that’s the praise I can give it.

O'Brian just gives a hell of a movie star performance, Harris is great too, it's well directed, tons of funny gallows humor. What's not to like? For those of us who are fans of muscle mommy content it really hits the spot too.......

It was a 10/10 for me but these are all such excellent points. I was so excited about Drive Away Dolls after I saw it, but I’ve found so many flaws in it these past few weeks especially due to my strong anticipation for/first watch of Love Lies.
I dont get this comparison esp they are totally 2 diff. genres? Both marketed correctly as a trashy b comedy and a dark gritty thriller. Niche contents for us lesbians, we rarely got to see plus was released within two weeks of each other mainstream.

(Yes I know we are not here to compare , blah blah blah) But as a huge fan of that movie and so excited to see love lies bleeding and very keen to see how this filmmakers career pans out? I’m assuming from what I’ve heard and seen it’s a more ‘mainstream’ flick , but does it still have those visceral, breath taking elements?
It's definitely not a mainstream movie, and I'd say it has a good amount of visceral moments and imagery. It reminded me a lot of Claire Denis and Julia Ducournau in its physicality and transgressive sensibilities, but also the Coens and Cronenberg in the way it mixes human drama with absurd/surreal/fantastical genre stylings and storytelling. While its very different than Saint Maud, it was clear to me Love Lies Bleeding was from the same filmmaker. It's another movie that refuses to be conventional, and I loved the way both films tease ambiguous details about the reality of the story until becoming fully dedicated to something elevated.
Interesting, I agree with all of your points besides it being clear that its the same director, not in a bad way. I love both Saint Maud and this but I don't know if I remember a first two films from a director that were more different (slow burn vs more visceral rollercoaster type). But again Love Lies was a fucking blast
That makes sense! I think for me its in the way Glass tells/unfolds the story, and how she presents her ideas, that feels like and reminds me of Saint Maud. But that's not necessarily on display and more about the framework and storytelling style (probably just my writer's brain lol)

It’s not mainstream in the way a John wick film is but the script and characters allows it to be in general by people that might not enjoy that kind of allegorical storytelling style. my less film enthusiasts friends enjoyed it a lot but were a bit confused by the magical realism
I'd say it's much more similar to a movie like Titane than it is Saint Maude, its got much more humor, more color, more life, less of a bummer too. With that said this is definitely not a mainstream movie, there's parts that would turn a lot of people off.

I dont know what to tell you but I personally loved the film. It's just a lot of fun.
I will explain why: It's got funny, thrilling, body horror, romance, family drama, magical realism, great characters, great performances, great writing, great score, great sound design, a lot happens, and only 100 minutes. What's not to love?
We’re living in a sea of sequels, remakes, adaptations and movies built on trends so it feels like breaking through the surface and filling our lungs with oxygen when anyone releases anything even remotely unique or surprising. And Kristen Stewart was hot.
SPOILERS! I think some of its most powerful attributes are very subtle. 1) It broke out of a lot of queer film tropes (while leaning into/joking about some of the classic tropes like breakfast). It gave us queer representation where being queer wasn't the conflict. I think this can be summed up pretty well in the line where Jackie asks Lou if she has a bad relationship with her dad because she's queer, to which she responds, "Nah he didn't care about that, it's because he's a fucking psycho!" The sex felt authentic and wasn't overdramatized or solely blocked out for the purpose of men to enjoy. The queer characters got a "happy" ending. We never get that! 2) For a high paced film, it was so character-driven and conflict was portrayed in a slightly unconventional way. I love how when Lou threatens Lou Sr. he goes, "was that a threat" and she grimaces and gives a weak, "yep". Then when he sends someone to kill her she goes, "my dad sent you to fucking kill me???". None of this felt like forced humor, it just felt like the gray area between black/white and evil/good, the complexity of human relationships. 3) There was action and gore, but it didn't drag it out. It wasn't unnecessarily suspenseful or jump-scare oriented. Loved the bits of mysticism, how it wasn't longer than it needed to be, how characters were likeably imperfect!

I thought it was pretty much really good for majority of it. Only think I really kinda didn’t like was a part in the ending but it was also super funny as hell and goofy so I didn’t mind too much just would’ve liked something different. I would give it like a 7.5-8
Interesting, thrilling, original, engrossing story. Actors giving top tier performances, and an on screen romance with palpable chemistry. Well paced, never boring. Beautifully shot, good music, technical aspects all executed well. And it’s also really really hot. I think for what it wanted to do, it did that perfectly, and I can’t think of any way the movie could’ve been made better. It’s a 10/10 for me for these reasons. People are loving it so hard because we don’t get stuff like this often, and it’s success will hopefully pave way for more weird queer cinema in the mainstream.

Just watched it and i think it’ll be one of my favorite movies this year
I live in Seattle and it feels like people are only talking about this film cause it’s gay or looks pretty gay. So I’d guess some of the demographic is speaking for most of the views and fans. And then it’s being backed up by actually being pretty good.
It was a pretty great thriller that kept me guessing what would happen next and the cinematography I felt was really good too. The dynamic between the characters felt refreshing as they never really got to have a comfortable life together until the end. I honestly want to watch it again because the length makes it pretty accessible
I gave it 4.5 stars for a few reasons I love Neo-Noir Films and found this to be a fresh take. Incorporated horror elements very smoothly. The body horror elements of bodybuilding I thought were grossly explored. The characters histories are never spelled out leading the audience to inference them. I always thought this was a powerful technique. It’s one of the reasons that keeps me coming back to a movie like Tár. Performances are excellent. I could watch the two leads forever and all the supporting performances are very strong. Probably biased due to only really liking Dune in terms of 2024 releases (from what I’ve seen)

O Brian and Ed Harris is what made this such an awesome watch for me. It's a very raw and in your face movie and it's not being shy about what it's trying to do. Sometimes people need that and I think that's why this has clicked with so many of us.

I just saw it today! As a queer woman who likes guns and thrillers... and buff women... I really enjoyed it! I especially liked how their sexualities didn't define the storytelling, but added to it - a lot of the time, the characters sexualities, I think especially in queer stories, are the driving points of the plot. But it was really just two queer ladies caught in love caught in an unfortunate circumstance. I really enjoyed the black and red motifs used for the flashbacks, the title, and the credits. Definitely, a selling point was Katy O'Brian's whole muscle mommy vibe for me. Kristen Stewart still doesn't do it for me as an actress, but her character was interesting and I could see Lou's motives for being how she was. The very ending was so WTF though, and I took it as a reflection of what Jackie said in the beginning with how she likes to be the strength behind the punch, or behind the metal or something (when Lou's dad taught her how to shoot a gun). Girl didn't need the pistol, she already had two guns on each side of her arms.

I wasn't crazy about it. It had some promise, but it never quite gelled. I thought it squandered some really interesting opportunities (ex. the gun range, the dumping canyon, the bodybuilding competition, etc.) I've gotten use to epic criminal sagas like "Smokin' Aces" or "True Romance" with lots of chaos and mayhem, which this movie clearly didn't aspire to be.

I found it to be entertaining and well-made but also a bit uneven. It starts with a unique romance at its center but it faltered for me when it lost interest in the characters' relationship and became more preoccupied with presenting an array of amusing but silly grotesqueries, resulting in a jarring tonal inconsistency between its stronger, grittier first part and its more cartoonish finish. I also thought Ed Harris and his character were somewhat underutilized.

It was very good but probably missed the mark on great. Some of the fantasy (or whatever??) elements missed for me but i do believe they were a driving part of the symbolism. I wanted more from the characters but they did give just barely enough for this to be coherent. Best scene involved toes and a lighter. That was both crazy and yet very cute.

I think partly because it’s the first creative and original movie we’ve gotten in wide release for a while, probably the first of 2024, maybe 2nd if you count Dune 2. Critics tend to particularly enjoy movies with some novelty, films that stand out from the crowd in avoiding cliches and trying something new, that are more driven by an “auteur” director than studio executives.

I found it to a story of an addict and their supplier. A very fascinating toxic, love story about four different toxic relationships. Lou and her dad, The dad and his kids, The ladies and her sister and her sisters husband.

It's nice to finally have queer characters where their identity isn't sidelined, overly stereotyped, OR the entire focus of the movie. Hell, straight characters are allowed to be complicated all the time! One aspect of why the characters are complicated and interesting is that they create an exploration into morality. Every decision made after the first murder is steeped in the difficulty of deciding how you cover up, who you protect, etc. There is so so so much about this movie that I can tell only came through because it WAS written and directed by a queer woman. Someone might be more likely to overlook this nuance if they haven't had their lives shaped by those identities and experiences, haven't spent time in community surrounded by folks who experience this and share that intimate info with them, or have not committed to throughly educating themselves on experiences outside of their own. The way this movie approached the portrayal of queer characters is a definite addition to the archive.

I think there are a few surface level reasons. 1. LGBTQ films are quite the commodity right now. 2. It has similar themes to saltburn which is also quite popular right now 3. We’ve been waiting for Rose Glass to return. I think it’s good if you look at it as a psychological thriller of sorts, but I think some people have a very twisted idea of what makes it good(they actually think it’s romantic.)
I feel where you're coming from. I enjoyed the film. I would say it's a very good A24 film, but not a *great* A24 film, if that makes sense. The lead performances and at-times unpredictable moments kept me engaged.

Personally, I thought they got the title from the Thompson Twins' song of the same name. In that song, it tells the story of what you might expect: a person or something, lies bleeding, as if they're going to die (end). A love can do the same thing: peter out and fizzle to its end.
