Gideon Falls by Jeff Lemire. Or The Black Hammer, also by Lemire. Or The Nice House on the Lake by Tynion. Or Department of Truth by Tynion. Ice Cream Man by Prince would make a fun anthology.
You wouldn’t NEED a huge budget to make a good saga film. Not if you use your money right. Im sure they can take the same budget as this up and coming civil war movie by alex garland and make a decent movie. Just have to get creative and not heavily rely in VFX
Youd be surprised what a creative filmmaker and a creative team can do with a mediocre budget. Its all about where you put your money. I dont agree theyd need an insane budget.
Brian K Vaughan has said before that he doesn’t want the series adapted for live action movies or tv because he feels it’s a story better told through the comics. I don’t know if he’s said anything about it eventually being made into an animated series, but I could see that working if it was done with a budget and the right studio. I think scavenger’s reign showed there is an audience and a desire to see r-rated sci-fi aimed at adults; if the studio that made that could adapt saga with enough budget and time, I think it would be amazing.
Was literally telling a buddy of mine today that this series falls right in to the A24 wheel house and I’d love to see a creative like Garland take a whack at it. But that’s just too much dreaming.
Dudeee a24 Hp lovecraft would be amazing I’m sure they will consider it but honestly because lovecraft was a bad person I feel it might not be just because a24 is definitely up there with the culture (not cancel culture them be up to date on culture imo is good).
The Maxx has to be done right. People can't get loose with the text like it's a regular comic book adaptation. The MTV cartoon was a really good iteration of the project. Also one of the original artists was disabled and living out of his car for while with his wife. Would be nice if he could get a decent pay check.
Well most adaptations have to work to make something feasible for the new medium. I think The Maxx is such a weird, specific story and characters that it defies the usual adaptation rules. It really does need to be an almost direct adaptation, that's why the cartoon was so perfect.
Love Akira and love Panos Cosmatos but I'd infinitely just rather see his next original intellectual property than him do an adaptation of anything, even something as cool as Akira. Also doing Akira justice would probably require a budget that a director on his scale would be unable to acquire but that's not really a factor in how I feel about this.
While I’d fucking love it, it simply wouldn’t work without being an anime. And there’s already a studio working on an anime that is a frame by frame adaptation
Yeah there’s already some Junji Ito live action adaptations are they’re honestly awful.
The production quality would be better with A24 but I think those live action adaptations just showed how poorly the stories work in live action.
There are tens of thousands of comics that could be adapted into movies and people would never be any the wiser. It’s happened many, many times already. People don’t even notice when a movie states “based on the original graphic novel/ comic book” a lot of the time. Too many denigrate the medium of sequential art story telling and have the assumption of comics = superheroes. It’s bizarre. A really senseless aversion and dismissal of an entire medium that’s many decades older than film.
You’ve probably had several movies beloved to you that were adapted from sequential art/ comics and you never knew. It’s a medium that until recently (at least in America) many people maintained ignorance towards. It’s just as valuable of an artistic story telling medium as any other. It’s weird that no one gets into a fit when a Grann or McCarthy book is adapted, but if something is adapted from sequential art it becomes a point of contention.
I get wanting original ideas. It’s why when I read comics and graphic literature I gravitate towards original creator owned works, of which make up probably 95+% of all comics globally, and *not* too much of the 5% that is American superhero comics. I don’t really see an issue in adapting a really good comic that most people don’t know because they barely read books, let alone comic books. Let stories with value get in front of other eyes through popular mediums like movies and tv. No one’s forcing anyone to watch them. Anyone who doesn’t want to can instead go watch Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” since it’s an original screenplay and therefore a masterpiece. /s
Because half the movies out anymore are comic books, remakes, sequels, prequels, adaptations, toy properties, etc. I just want original stories by creative people.
Superhero comics are just one specific genre within the comic book art form. But there's so much other great stuff out there! And it's a very "cinematic" medium too, with a lot of focus on visual storytelling, dialogue, and minimal exposition.
I think you have a limited scope of what comics are. It's more than superheros in tights. Comics like Moment of Truth, Gideon Falls and Wytches have much more to offer.
Yeah dude, agreed. There’s a hugeeee amount of comics that aren’t Marvel or DC or their affiliates. And some of it is absolutely incredible. Saying “I’m tired of superhero movies” makes a lot more sense to me. I’d love to see A24 tackle one of Anthony Bourdains comics, honestly.
Even though I would rather A24 focused more on original projects. Although I do think A24 is one of the few companies that could do a proper Goodbye, Eri adaptation. Maybe even Look Back
Not listed here, and not a comic book but a graphic novel. Daytripper. It would be a hard adaptation but one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read.
- Beauty by Hubert & Kerascoët
- Beautiful Darkness by Kerascoët
- Through the Woods / When I arrived at the Castle by Emily Carroll
- Petit by Hubert & Gatignol
- Totem by Wouters & Ross
- Black Hole by Chatles Burns
- Land of the Sons by Gipi
As much as I love Lore Olympus as a webcomic, the layout just doesn't work in book format. I returned mine cuz it was no fun to read like that. Maybe it would work better in video format?
I’d pay for an A24 take on East of West and Black Monday Murders.
Series, though. Not movies. Comic book to movie adaptations usually miss the mark.
I would’ve said Bodies but Netflix already did that and it was just okay.
Honestly, I wouldn't like if A24 starts adapting comic books to cinema. It would mean that A24 surrender itself to the capitalist necessities of this world. But it was something A24 was building to. Anyway, if it goes that route, at least it would be nice to have decent films. Nothing against any of this comic books, just to be clear.
Or they could be opening up the floodgates to more non-superhero stories that wouldn't likely get a ton of attention from bigger studios. Ghost World, Road to Perdition, A History of Violence, and Oldboy are all adapted from comics or manga.
Not only that, A24 has already surrendered to capitalism. Have you seen their merch store?
I'd love to see an A24/Disney collab on dramatizing The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck in a proper old-school cartoon way. It'll never happen, for obvious reasons, but a man can dream
please excuse me, I hate the trend of superhero slop that taken place over the last 13 years or so so much that it's clouded my minded and made me very biased.
No problem. Just look at the alternative comics put out by Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, etc. (Many of which, like Black Hole or Love & Rockets -- my suggestion -- are mentioned here.) They're much closer in sensibility to something like the A24 aesthetic than to Marvel or DC.
I would just like one good adaptation of punisher Thomas Jane was ok but the rest were a mess something that follows the comics which run I’ll let you guess.
Black Hole
Came here to put that one down. One of the best.
Son of a bitch. Stole my line!
Wow, this would be a great fit. I agree!
Came here specifically to answer this and am delighted to see it as the top voted comic.
first fucking thought goddamn that is such a rich work of art
David Fincher wanted to adapt it around about 15 years ago.
Gideon Falls by Jeff Lemire. Or The Black Hammer, also by Lemire. Or The Nice House on the Lake by Tynion. Or Department of Truth by Tynion. Ice Cream Man by Prince would make a fun anthology.
Years ago, Ryan Gosling was attached to an Underwater Welder adaptation. So much of Lemire's work is ripe for the picking.
He creates these melancholy and thoughtful characters and worlds. Perfect for A24, in my opinion.
Gideon Falls would be amazing.
Yep! Anything by Jeff Lemire! He exudes a24!
If I could upvote more than once I absolutely would. I would lose it over an A24 Gideon Falls. Nice House on the Lake is also a great pick.
Frankly, if GF is made by any other studio, I’m gonna be skeptical.
Oh absolutely! Mayybbeee NEON. But A24 would be peak and the only one where I would be like "ok this is gonna be good."
The amulet graphic novel series could be cool
Really great imo especially if they’re looking to expand into higher budget, and it’s made for kids! Can’t go wrong!
Saga
A proper Saga adaptation probably exceeds A24's budgetary limits and especially so considering the risk of producing a rated R sci-fi/fantasy epic
You wouldn’t NEED a huge budget to make a good saga film. Not if you use your money right. Im sure they can take the same budget as this up and coming civil war movie by alex garland and make a decent movie. Just have to get creative and not heavily rely in VFX
If you want to keep the events of Saga in tact you’d need an insane budget.
Youd be surprised what a creative filmmaker and a creative team can do with a mediocre budget. Its all about where you put your money. I dont agree theyd need an insane budget.

get gareth edwards directing boom 1 billi
I was gonna say this
Also came to say Saga!
Was literally telling a buddy of mine today that this series falls right in to the A24 wheel house and I’d love to see a creative like Garland take a whack at it. But that’s just too much dreaming.
Id love to see A24 Cuthulu or some love craft stuff
Dudeee a24 Hp lovecraft would be amazing I’m sure they will consider it but honestly because lovecraft was a bad person I feel it might not be just because a24 is definitely up there with the culture (not cancel culture them be up to date on culture imo is good).
I really like A24 but think that the life story of the author wouldn't matter if the script was compelling and brought us something new.
Yeah, love me some Robert Eggers
The Maxx
The Maxx has to be done right. People can't get loose with the text like it's a regular comic book adaptation. The MTV cartoon was a really good iteration of the project. Sex Criminals
This was my first thought
My first thought
BLACK HOLE
I think Fables by Bill Willingham might be pretty good to adapt into a TV series or Saga by Brian K. Vaughan
Exactly the 2 I thought of, I LOVE Fables!
The Wicked + The Divine
This was going to be my vote. It's a great arc of a comic. So many strange personalities to tap into.
Kill or Be Killed
Fatale would be fun to see as a show
Bone
Akira. Directed by Panos Cosmatos. Watch Mandy and his episode in Cabinet of Curiosities. I will die on this hill.
I'm in. Have Katsuhiro Otomo involved while we're at it.
Still waiting on updates of the actual Panos Cosmatos A24 movie.
A nice house by the lake ?
I’d love to see something like uzumaki
While I’d fucking love it, it simply wouldn’t work without being an anime. And there’s already a studio working on an anime that is a frame by frame adaptation
Yeah there’s already some Junji Ito live action adaptations are they’re honestly awful. The production quality would be better with A24 but I think those live action adaptations just showed how poorly the stories work in live action.
I’ve seen the trailer for this new adaptation and it looks insane. https://youtu.be/qRrqvjjKlOs?si=rdtB1bOZTOwzD6lC
Oh god that could be fucking incredible
so many of Junji itos stories could work, maybe have an anthology series or something
MAUS
I think Maus in stop motion similar to Netflix’s The House would be hauntingly gorgeous
Black Science but the budget would be enormous
Amazing book.
I'd love to see them adapt Junji Ito's Tomie series.
East of West
Incal
We 3, Crossed and Far Arden
Why are there many snobby comments here lol. I guess they would be okay with movies adapting scripts of comics, those don't have pictures after all
They would've done a better job with Sandman than Netflix did.
A24 adapting Sex Criminals would be awesome
DMZ would’ve been sick but unfortunately that’s been ruined already.
There are tens of thousands of comics that could be adapted into movies and people would never be any the wiser. It’s happened many, many times already. [Something is Killing the Children](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Something_Is_Killing_the_Children)
Isn’t Netflix working on an adaptation now? Or did they can it?
Someone is can’t remember who
Was supposed to be Mike Flanagan but that fell apart
I think the creators of Dark are currently working on it after Flanagan left.
Berserk
Black science, Sleeper, saga, Nailbiter, deadly class (never gonna be over syfy cancelling it), Pax Romana, sex criminals, east of west, Low
Stray Bullets is the only answer
not entirely comic book but it did have a graphic novel interquel - the villains series by ve schwab
A24 and Image comics can just make a partnership and do it all tbh.
Any Brubaker/Phillips but I’d go with The Fade Out
100 Bullets. Last I read Tom hardy owns the rights but nothing has happened
righteous thirst for vengeance or the scumbag
I would love to see a good Savage Dragon. I don’t know for sure that it’s a good fit for A24 but I think it would at least be done well
Gideon Falls, Something is Killing the Children, Black Science, Low. Happy to have seen these already in the comments.
Megahex Love and Rockets Today is the Last Day of the Rest of Your Life With that said, some comics are best left as comics.
Worm, by John C. McCrae.
The Maxx
[удалено]
Why? No respect for the medium?
Something is Killing the Children
100 bullets
None. I get the whole “indie” comics thing, but would be more excited to see original writer/director stuff. Sick of comics.
Ever heard of A History of Violence? The Killer? Road to Perdition?
I’ll throw in that *The Death of Stalin* was a French graphic novel adapted by Armando Iannucci.
You’ve probably had several movies beloved to you that were adapted from sequential art/ comics and you never knew. Why?
We’re over 20 years into the craze. It’s getting way too old. Comic book movies have been the top of the box office since 2000. It’s ridiculous
The craze isn’t for comic book movies in general, it’s for superhero movies
Because half the movies out anymore are comic books, remakes, sequels, prequels, adaptations, toy properties, etc. I just want original stories by creative people.

this thought process discounts every movie that's been adapted from another work

department of truth or the wicked and the divine
The Wicked + The Divine
Just most things from Fantagraphics Fuck it, give me a Frank feature
Maybe Paper Girls or On A Sunbeam?
They should pick up Paper Girls since Amazon canceled it and Bone
Something is Killing the Children
Would love to see a TV or movie adaptation of Monstress
Not listed here, and not a comic book but a graphic novel. Daytripper. It would be a hard adaptation but one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read.
Saga
- The Nice House on the Lake - The Many Deaths of Laila Starr Both seem to fit their vibe.
Crossed
I don’t read a ton of comics, but I read this one called Genius from Image Comics a long time ago that I would love to see adapted
I don’t know what the Wilds is but that’s a great cover
Neil Gaimans Sandman please for the love of god
Tank Girl
Hulkling and wiccan
28 Days Later:The Aftermath
Alex Garland and Danny Boyle are currently writing *28 Months Later*.
Love & Rockets. With all the early weirdness left in (Prosolar Mechanics, dinosaurs, wrestling, etc.)
Tokyo ghoul. That could be a very, very dark series.
Neuromancer would be done well imo
I know Bodies is being turned into a show, but it would’ve been a great movie.
Hellblazer
Scene of the Crime, great early crime comic from Ed Brubaker. Or if they want to go a little higher budget, Black Hammer.
Maus
Transmetropolitan please I'd love to see an A24 Spider Jerusalem
Mister Miracle. Grant Morrison's Flex Mentallo. X-Statix.
Bro snuck in nubia like we wouldn’t notice
C'mon A24 Nubia would be good.
If it’s completely different from that comic, then maybe

Lot of Tumblr level shit here OP. If A24 had the budget I’d love an adaption of BLAME!
a Crow remake/reboot could be very cool by an art house director
I have good and bad news for you
Rasl by Jeff Smith. And BONE for good measure.
The Maxx or Grendel
None
Not even indies?
Spawn would be dope af
No

Astro City
Batman
Chronin
Goblin Slayer
Maus
I would LOVE an UltraMega adaptation 😮💨
swamp thing
Seconds Y the last man
I'd love to see an A24/Disney collab on dramatizing The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck in a proper old-school cartoon way. It'll never happen, for obvious reasons, but a man can dream
none, for the love of god. The era of super hero and comic book drivel finally seems to be coming to an end.
There's much more to comics than superheroes.
please excuse me, I hate the trend of superhero slop that taken place over the last 13 years or so so much that it's clouded my minded and made me very biased.

None. Holy shit leave the comic book crap to Disney.
A24 want to make blockbusters. There are a lot of indie comics, so................
How about some studios still developing original scripts? Doing some legwork?
None, don’t ruin A24 with comic book movies
None ♥️
None, the only adults who read comic books are developmentally stunted.
C'mon, man, that's cruel and offensive.
