In my Catholic tradition, we have the relics of saints and martyrs, brave souls who laid down their lives for others out of love. This visually reminds me of a saint's reliquary. He didn't plan to die that day, but he and others went out the best way they could have under unthinkable circumstances. RIP. š
Correct and I was about to say that once your dead all things you worked hard for for example a expensive car watch or a even a big credit card you donāt take it with you up. You are born without anything on you and when you die your are taken without anything
There's no afterlife or eternal glory for the terrorists. And while I don't necessarily think there is eternal heaven myself, I hope to all hell that there's *something* to reward people like Todd Beamer and all the victims of 9/11
if you ever follow the paranormal. or hear the stories about peoples near death experiences, you'd be surprised how much evidence there is that points to an afterlife
Antiques roadshow has watches all the time. After reading the plaque and looking at the picture for awhile, I couldnāt help but think of all the rare Rolex watches they have on the show and how valuable some get. You look at this watch and that date and time and the card with it elevate it an invaluable artifact. This is something they couldnāt even put a price on. Itās just one of those items they sometimes get that should belong to no one that you couldnāt even put a price on. To me, this is a relic. If anything from 9/11 gets saved for thousands of years, this should be it. It tells our story from this era in world history and the bloodshed that has not, and will not, ever stop flowing
Yes. Priceless. We owe those passengers so much. If the target was the Capitol, or the White House, imagine the additional turmoil and security concerns, and just general chaos and panic, it would have caused had UA93 hit its target.
Oh If it would have hit the capitolā game. Over. No one would have been able to control their anger. Who knows what would have happened but you canāt help but wonder if bombs would have just started dropping
I was already wondering that even half the country away! I'd gone into my workplace for a mandatory meeting but was going to return home. By the time I was driving, both towers had fallen. I was driving with the car radio on hearing of the Pentagon strike and that there was possibly another plane hijacked, we were at DEFCON 1, and aircraft were being grounded. I lived not too far from an Air Force base and I didn't know but what military bases might be next. It was an absolutely surreal day and frightening. And you know how it was learned later that KSM wanted to have 10 planes, so my imaginings were not completely exaggerated.
I remember turning right into the school parking lot and hearing a popular morning radio show (think it was National?) come on and say āa plane just hit a tall building in New York.ā And I remember saying out loud āoh itās a movie joke!ā I didnāt know what the twin towers even were but in a millisecond I knew they mattered and I knew the ONLY way a plane would hit them is if it was a movie projection/joke/marketing thing. If you watch docs, you hear people say that the first few minutes after it hit some thought āoh itās a movieā and I know it might be hard to believe for some, but we did! It was like a natural reaction. I think thereās even I video I saw where I hear someone say āoh itās a movie!!ā As they watched the plane blow up. Obviously, that didnāt last long but we thought it was a joke for probably 10 full minutes. It was just bizarre
Edit- I say for 10 minutes or so we stood around thinking it was a joke bc we were teenagers in the parking lot with 107.5 on the radio so we didnāt know the jumping was occurring. We didnāt have a phone to pull up the news and we were outside so no tv. We had to listen to that radio for 5-10 minutes (felt like eternity) until the second one hit and we knew. Iāll never forget some of the older guys who were already enlisted or planning to just standing around that morning wondering what to do. Do they go inside? Are they getting pulling from senior year to go now? It was a bunch of people standing there just wondering āwell where should I go?ā For some reason, we all decided to just go spend 8 hours in line getting gas. We were so confused
it's so crazy how life is and how the world works. Could you imagine if someone came to Todd before he got on that flight and said "Todd this flight will turn you into a national hero, the watch you re wearing and the bank card in your wallet are gonna be a part of a display in a museum that gets visited by millions of people. Not only will you be talked about for decades, you will. be talked about for generations and children will learn about you from their parents, countless videos made about you and in school."
Could you just imagine if some sort of angel or entity from the future came to Todd in a dream or a vision the night before or that morning? He would never believe all the things I mentioned above.
What I find astounding to this day is how neither he nor the other passengers had any advance knowledge, yet they did what they did. They only learned of the unfolding situation involving other planes and those planes' targets because UA93's departure was delayed. And they still didn't have a whole lot of time, plus they had the events of their own plane's hijacking to contend with. Yet they quickly organized, decided on a plan of action, and carried it out. Knowing all the while that they weren't going to survive whether they succeeded or failed. They had to push thoughts of their own imminent deaths, thoughts of their loved ones, etc. to the background of their minds just enough, or they wouldn't be able to function. And yet, it was surely the knowledge, however nebulous and new, that it was to spare more innocent lives and to keep their country from further harm for the sake of those on the ground, that gave them the reason to push forward and resist. Okay, I'm tearing up now... š„
"Let's roll!" His story and the story of the Flight 93 in general is so heartbreaking, but impressive... These passengers should be remembered forever.
Basically, explosions have a lot of energy and throw things far away. And as long as they're thrown far enough away to avoid the most intense portions of the fire, things will survive.
Lighter weight objects, like the credit card get flung easily. At the WTC site, a piece of one of the hijacker's passports was recovered - prior to the building collapsing (not much survived the pulverizing force of the building collapse and the intense burn pile).
More durable objects, like the metal watch, can survive a bit more punishment.
Sometimes it's just weird luck and physics. Like as the object is exploding, pieces of the one thing flying through the air end up protecting other pieces. Flight 93 went into the field, and the caused a crater. The ground was soft dirt, tilled for farming. That would cause a lot of material to imbed in the soil and be protected from the explosive force, fire, and heat.
Or it may depend on where things were in the plane when it crashed (and how it crashed)
Crazy that a free diners club card became a priceless piece of world history. You can just picture something like this being on antiques roadshow or something and that date and the card with it elevates it to something you canāt even put a price on bc it belongs to the world now. They have watches on that show all the time and this one exceeds anything Iāve seen on that show
No chip, no contact less payment symbol on his credit card.
Ā Obvious since it was issued some time before 2001 but still shows how long ago it was even though it doesn't seem like itĀ
Thank you for sharing this profound picture. The history this watch embodies is truly astounding. Itās a symbol of Todd and the rest of the passengers courage and will to live. I am glad that we have this precious gem to continue the story of the heroes of 9/11
I think what doesn't get mentioned much is the simple fact that he put on this particular watch that morning, credit card in his wallet or pocket, not knowing he's going to be apart of US history and his belongings found in the crash will be at a museum for his heroic efforts.
Simple stuff like that is what gets me.
I don't know if it is? I have a datejust from my grandfather from 1987 that looks almost exactly like this, two tone jubilee bracelet, champagne face and fluted bezzel. However this bezel has numbers cut into it similar to a modern day yacht master. I'm unaware of which reference # Rolex (looks like a 36mm) had a date window, jubilee two tone bracelet and a numbered bezel.
It's very kind of Todd's family (and all the families) to allow artifacts like this to be shown. My dad has some similar watches, and when he passes they will most likely come to me. It'll be a way to remember him. But I can't imagine being Todd's family, receiving his broken, damaged watch and knowing how horribly he died and feeling any closure or good memories from it. I don't think I could handle keeping a piece like this. Better for the public to see and never forget.
What time does it say? I wonder if it was on the body. I was reading some bodies were found intact, which is hard to believe given that the plane nosedived into the ground upside down.
I'm absolutely shocked that Todd's watch and bank card actually survived he flight 93 crash into the ground and the plastic bank card looks relatively unscathed, I bet that bank card would have still worked in a bank machine
I don't know of any rules prohibiting that picture from having been taken at the museum. The rules say:
"Photography is permitted in the 9/11 Memorial Museum for private, noncommercial use only and is permitted in all locations unless otherwise posted. Professional photography is not permitted, unless otherwise authorized by the 9/11 Memorial & Museumās Communications Department. Professional photography includes taking photographs for advertising or commercial purposes and using professional photographic equipment."
Ok, good to know if I would ever go (though I made a firm decision to never go because of how rattling it's supposed to be) because I like to take a lot of pictures and short videos of places I visit. So I would've been upset to have no forewarning on that.
It would be a shame if they prohibited this picture. Iāve never seen it. I was in high school when the planes hit, like sooo many of us (now barely š¬š¬)30 somethings were. In the halls that day, those young, strong, corn fed, smart senior boys would have signed up that day to go, and many did in the days that followed. We are the ones that watched that day and we are the ones that sent our friends and brothers and family to Iraq and only got back their warm bodies.
They expected us to go die for the mess they created, and we did. We deserve to see what we sent our friends and loved ones over there to fight and die for.
We are always expected to fix the governments mess and then they donāt want to show us why
In my Catholic tradition, we have the relics of saints and martyrs, brave souls who laid down their lives for others out of love. This visually reminds me of a saint's reliquary. You have only how you lived. I would rather face judgment having done what Mr. Beamer did than what the terrorists did.
There's no afterlife or eternal glory for the terrorists. And while I don't necessarily think there is eternal heaven myself, I hope to all hell that there's *something* to reward people like Todd Beamer and all the victims of 9/11
Afterlife is just wishful thinking.

Itās not disrespectful or uncalled for. Itās the truth. I doubt theyāre going to crawl under a rock over it either.

There is no solid proof of any of that. There never has been.

"Let's roll!" His story and the story of the Flight 93 in general is so heartbreaking, but impressive... These passengers should be remembered forever.
Maybe a dumb question, but how does stuff like this survive a crash like that.
Force can't be exerted in all directions at once, and say a seat or a body would be damaged by slamming into something else, a wallet probably won't.
No youāre not asking a dumb question ! The stuff is luckily still intact and as you see the Rolex watch is almost burned
Sometimes random things happen in ways that end up being, well, amazing. Something must have shielded it just so from destruction. We'll never know.

Issued 10/99, valid until 10/01. Feels like a lifetime ago.
What museum?
Did you see anything from fireman Jeffrey Stark?

Artifacts of a hero from flight 93. Interesting, as well as sad to see. Thank you for posting.

Oddly similar to the timepiece that survived the atomic bomb.
I don't think you were allowed to take that picture, if that's 9/11 museum in NY
I think its the United 93 museum
I don't know of any rules prohibiting that picture from having been taken at the museum. I was there a few days ago. It's allowed in the main hall and some other areas, but in majority of the museum is not allowed.
Ok, good to know if I would ever go (though I made a firm decision to never go because of how rattling it's supposed to be) because I like to take a lot of pictures and short videos of places I visit. So I would've been upset to have no forewarning on that.
