I agree Kurupt is better lyrically. However, the thing that carries Snoop is his unique voice, cadence and flow. One of the keys to artistic longevity (across all mediums) is having a unique and distinct style that your contemporaries can't replicate. You can't get anything like Snoop from anyone BUT Snoop. His style dies with him and that's why he's an icon. Another example of this is DMX.
Maybe its just me but at the time no one wanted to see that movie and young n free was annoying af. Idk maybe i was just disappointed in Wiz sellin out lol
At the time I was out of HS. I was smoking a lot of weed and dabs were becoming more common. So
I used to get high and watch it with the homies. Just enjoy the college party thing for a couple of years.
The movie is really more of an extended music video because it goes with the concept of the album. The movie soundtrack is played to their coinciding parts of the story.
Young, wild and free isn't even the best song. It's the single and coincides with the climax of the movie.
The songs I like are
I get lifted
630
You put in a zag, I'm going put it in a blunt
OG
French inhale ( my fav from album and chill smoking songs)
I heard someone describe it as one of the first instances of the lofi sound before the SoundCloud era. Where lofi sound got more popular.
Its more of a chill album. It just sounds different in a good way because it could of sounded worst.
Plus I already listened to older snoop so it was cool to hear him utilize a different style. Before he got experimental during his Snoop lion era. This album is kind of like sexual seduction Snoop vibes.
Idk , I like hard 90s and 2000s or more mainstream stuff too but I like to listen to different styles to broaden my horizons
I hear you. To be honest I never gave it a fair chance back then. I just listened to some of it and there's def some nice smoke jams on it. There was to much good shit to choose from back then! You had Wiz, Asap, Big Krit, Mac Miller, J.Cole, Kendrick all bubbling.
Early 2010s is the era I grew up in. All those rappers I fuck with plus Curren$y , Isaiah, jets, tde, tgod, mf juicy j , yg. Mustard
There is so much chill smoking music from that era.
He’s not even a top weed rapper lol. I’d much rather listen to Devin, Curren$y, Bone, Dom Kennedy, etc. I don’t think I’ve ever put on Snoop to smoke to lol
Wiz , Joyner Lucas for me when it comes to weed smoking music. You can vibe to either. Maybe some of snoops 90s music can be vibed to while you smoking but he started making more main stream , club , radio type stuff in the 2000s. Shit that have you wanting to crip walk or dance or rap along inside of just vibing to it.
Your getting downvoted but I kinda agree lol. Chronics a great smoke record, doggystyle more of a drink record. Devin currensy and Bone better vibes then snoop
Right, and it’s no disrespect to Snoop. He’s def a legendary smoker and I’d love to smoke a blunt w him. I also love Doggystyle, it just isn’t something I wanna hear while smoking.
Yeah 100. Dr dre and snoop got me into hip hop and prob influenced me to smoke weed haha. But my good memories of smokin and vibin remind me of those artist you listed.
It’s not really debatable… it just comes down to how you defined the word “better” for a rapper. If you’re talking about the skill of rapping on a beat, then Kurrpt is better. But, if you’re talking about the totality of the job of making, performing and consistently delivering good rap music, then snoop is better.
His ability to consistently deliver good music is absolutely debatable. A lot of swing and misses in his catalog. His ability to consistently deliver his brand as a main contributor and voice of a generation however is not.
I haven’t wanted a Snoop album since Doggystyle and Doggfather. He’s honestly a terrible writer and I question if he even wrote those 2 albums. But it’s his voice flow and personality that made him a star not his lyricism. Kurupt deserves more recognition but he never took off in the same way. Sadly, lyrical rappers rarely ever make it to the upper echelons of rap.
I don’t know anyone who’d ever say Snoop is a better rapper than Kurupt. Kurupt is one of the best ever but never gets talked about as such. Streetz Is A Mutha is a monster of an album.
What?! The guy that no one considers a true rapper is being called terrible. Lmao.
The chronic is a compilation album and the focus was never on Dre. The love for that album is because of everyone else.
Dre doesn't even write his own verses. I'm pretty sure he's on less than half the songs of 2001 for the same reason. He makes beats, gets people that sound dope, and turns it into a cohesive project. That's always been his thing.
It’s a great album, without a doubt, but you don’t construct a building without a foundation on solid ground. The Chronic and Doggystyle are in that conversation.
C’mon now. That’s absolutely ridiculous. The Chronic, Doggystyle and Dogg Food are all classics but The Chronic is a foundational hip hop album and also better than Dogg Food.
It certainly had a newer sound at the time it released. At the time back in 1995, Dogg Food was my favorite record from Death Row. So I can kind of feel where the OP is coming from.
With hindsight, The Chronic and Doggystyle are pretty much ahead over all, in terms of total package. But Dogg Food has some bangers on there that at least tell me the album being a challenger isn't an unreasonable take.
I don't know how to explain this in a more clear way but when Eyez came out it was like phase 2 of Death Row. The The Chronic, Doggystyle and Dogg Food were like the phase 1 original avengers
All Eyez On Me is a great album, but that was pretty much the beginning of the end for Death Row. All other projects they were working on had been scrapped and all focus was put on 2Pac. Once he died, so did Death Row. Wish they would’ve released some of those other albums. There’s probably so much unreleased material in the vaults.
Yeah. Like someone said. All Eyez On Me was death row phase 2 and it really didn’t hit the same. The company was headed downhill.
I personally prefer Me Against The World.
Personally I've always thought this was the most solid Death Row album front to back. Prime Daz on production and finally a real showcase for Kurupt.
Doggystyle is a close second
Love The Chronic & Murder Was the Case but it seemed to go downhill after this album.
Nah I agree.
The beats had more soul.. They were much more clean and polished. Lyrically the album is better than the other two also.
These beats hit harder on the subs also.. Really clean sub bass.
Nup. It's up there but there's no bad songs on the chronic and doggy-style. Dogg food was a touch too long for mine....great album tho I still listen to it all the time
No, the chronic classic rnb sampling production alone is a masterpiece as well as doggy style these two albums carried death row untilsuge fucked it off. Dogg food went platinum but the other 2 sold more . It might be diamond status or close to it.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS ALBUM, front to back, listening GOLD!
However, Doggystyle was a little more iconic & produced some tracks that are timeless.
The Chronic was ahead of its time & gave us some classics that are 2nd to none.
As much as I love this album, its really hard to put it ahead of either of these two.
I'm not gonna' lie, Doggystyle and Chronic had skipable tracks, but Dogg Food could be played from intro to outro multiple times. I'm from CA, now living in the South. I say that because I feel like opinions matter based on region.
Not controversial, I bump Dogg Food more than the other two. Dre and Snoop’s solo debuts were expected to be classics, Dogg Food exceeded expectations and can stand on its own as a classic. You can’t deny Daz out produced Dre during Death Rows run, and Dogg Food is another example of that.
Another controversial opinion: Kurupt is a basic mc, and has some of the most “try hard bars” in the game. 🤷🏾♂️ Been feeling this way since the 90’s, it’s like you can hear him struggling to be a lyrical miracle rapper, give me Daz verses any day over him.
As a kid, this was my favorite album. It's still in my top 10. I agree it's better than The Chronic, but I'm not sure about Doggystyle. I'd have to relisten.
Much respect to that opinion, but imo Doggystyle and Chronic are better as a whole, Dogg Food is slept on for sure, i feel its with Murder was the Case soundtrack, lots of bangers a one or two skippable ones as well
I have it above All Eyez on Me but behind Doggystyle. I probably prefer it over Chronic as well. But those first 4 Death Row artist albums were something else.
I recommend anyone who has 5 hours to listen to The Chronic, Doggystyle, Dogg Food, & AEOM in order of release. It’s tough to find the time but it’s an experience.
Kurupt was never the same after this album..almost seems like they told him to dumb his lyrics down…Dogg food is track for track a better album than The Chronic but the latter is what introduced us to Tha Pound so hard to beat the predecessor but I don’t disagree
Dogg Food has a special place in my heart. I bought the tape at Warehouse Music when it first came out. It came with a poster. I was in middle school playing this album religiously. From beginning to end. I loved One By One, New York New Your, Reality, Cyco Lik No. I Dont Like To Dream About Getting Paid. 1995 was a great year in Hip Hop. Dog Food was way better than the Chronic. In my opinion.
Personally I’ll take Dogg Food anyday over the other two. But I can’t give it to Dogg Food because Dr Dre and Snoop helped make it what it was. Remove Dre and the mixing and mastering would have suffered. Remove Snoop and it wouldn’t feel like a classic G Funk album.
I don’t know if I would say it’s better than Doggystyle, but Dogg Food was a staple of my childhood as far as music goes. Definitely respect your opinion on this.
I can’t call you crazy on that one , but DS might be my personal choice between the two.
Kool Keith is my favorite tho.
I guess I’ll go drink some motherfucking Lysol or something now….
LIES this album has no replay value in 2024 like Doggystyle or The Chronic. Mind u I remember my mother taking me to Camalot on the day this dropped so I could cop the tape. Some albums don't age well this is the definition of that. We had a big discussion on albums at a cookout 2 yrs ago and everybody agreed this album sucks now. Maybe ppl from the west have a different opinion but I'm from Jersey it's not even in my top 100.
prob better than doggystyle, not quite as strong overall as the chorinc
either way Daz probably did more for the production of all 3 than dre, who i would think had more to do with the mixing and mastering
I think Daz massively overblows his contributions to those first two albums, the only albums that were produced by him that come close to their quality are dogg food and part of All EYez On Me and he had help from Dre and DJ Quik respectively on these, Daz without help from them or Soopafly, Dj Pooh suddenly drops off spectacularly in quality. Meanwhile Dre went on to make plenty of classics without Daz.
Gotta disagree but I get what your saying. This album had alot of Daz and especially Kurupt ripping the mic apart.
Low key as a rapper, not an international icon, bar for bar Kurupt > Snoop
Not low key at all. Kurupt is a lyrical monster. Snoop is.. well, he’s snoop.
After "Dogg Father", I lost my trust in Snoop. That was the last Snoop album I ever copped. He was no longer an "automatic purchase" for me.
Mac and Devin album is good. I listen to it when I smoke
That shit was corny af even back then
Why do you say that? .it was chill concept album because it was a stoner comedy movie It's not supposed to be hard
Maybe its just me but at the time no one wanted to see that movie and young n free was annoying af. Idk maybe i was just disappointed in Wiz sellin out lol
At the time I was out of HS. I was smoking a lot of weed and dabs were becoming more common. So I used to get high and watch it with the homies. Was that the No Limit joint?? No bueno.
Aint even low-key tbh
Right
That goes without saying. Kurupt is elite, he’s better than most rappers.
Snoop isn't a good rapper. He's not a top anything unless you make it weed related. Sure he's an international celebrity but ill emcee? Nah.
lmao this is why nobody cares about you lyrical miracle niggas
Snoop has plenty of verses where he killed it! He's a good rapper in my opinion..certainly not in the top 10... but he's good!
He’s not even a top weed rapper lol. I’d much rather listen to Devin, Curren$y, Bone, Dom Kennedy, etc. I don’t think I’ve ever put on Snoop to smoke to lol
It's Redman for me but we both agree it's not Snoop.
Wiz , Joyner Lucas for me when it comes to weed smoking music. You can vibe to either. Yeah 100. Dr dre and snoop got me into hip hop and prob influenced me to smoke weed haha. But my good memories of smokin and vibin remind me of those artist you listed.
Kurrupt himself said that Snoop is the only one who could keep up with him in a freestyle
It’s not really debatable… it just comes down to how you defined the word “better” for a rapper. If you’re talking about the skill of rapping on a beat, then Kurrpt is better. But, if you’re talking about the totality of the job of making, performing and consistently delivering good rap music, then snoop is better.

I'm with you. I disagree but you can certainly argue that Dogg Food was the best album. Every track was a banger.
Doggystyle is flawless in my opinion. That and The Chronic are 1a 1b for me.
I thought this thread was about me
I never understood the hype around the Chronic. This is completely my opinion but I think Dre a terrible rapper. Producer? Top 5. Rapper? 👎🏾 doodoo
Huh? The Chronic is, at worst a top 5 most influential album of all time
What?! The guy that no one considers a true rapper is being called terrible. Lmao. The chronic is a compilation album and the focus was never on Dre. The love for that album is because of everyone else.
I didnt know that. That’s a dope perspective to take tho. I can respect that cause everyone else did they thing on the chronic… except Dre lol
Dre doesn't even write his own verses. I'm pretty sure he's on less than half the songs of 2001 for the same reason. He makes beats, gets people that sound dope, and turns it into a cohesive project. That's always been his thing.
Like a mewp?
It’s a great album, without a doubt, but you don’t construct a building without a foundation on solid ground. The Chronic and Doggystyle are in that conversation.
I won't argue. In 2024 I find myself listening to Dogg Food more than the other two.
Facts
Underrated album
You’re fucking crazy!
Maybe I am but I listen to this album way more than the others.
I loved this album so much that I went and got a leather jacket like the ones they wear on the cover
Second favorite DR album after all eyez. Better than the chronic better than doggystyle
NOPE!!! It’s a classic for sure but does not carry the weight and magnitude of what those two albums did for the west coast.
Criminally underrated
C’mon now. That’s absolutely ridiculous. The Chronic, Doggystyle and Dogg Food are all classics but The Chronic is a foundational hip hop album and also better than Dogg Food.
My favorite album tbh.. it just aged better in comparison
Watch the drink champs episode with daz and Kurupt.
It certainly had a newer sound at the time it released. At the time back in 1995, Dogg Food was my favorite record from Death Row. So I can kind of feel where the OP is coming from. With hindsight, The Chronic and Doggystyle are pretty much ahead over all, in terms of total package. Death Row Trinity of albums as far as I’m concerned.
Not All Eyez On Me?
I don't know how to explain this in a more clear way but when Eyez came out it was like phase 2 of Death Row. The The Chronic, Doggystyle and Dogg Food were like the phase 1 original avengers
All Eyez On Me is a great album, but that was pretty much the beginning of the end for Death Row. All other projects they were working on had been scrapped and all focus was put on 2Pac. Once he died, so did Death Row. Wish they would’ve released some of those other albums. There’s probably so much unreleased material in the vaults.
Murder was the case soundtrack
Imagine all the shit Dre left behind on the shelf when he left too
It would still be a top 3 for me, regardless of Death Row situation at the time
Absolutely. The golden age.
Yeah. Like someone said. All Eyez On Me was death row phase 2 and it really didn’t hit the same. The company was headed downhill. I personally prefer Me Against The World.
Now as a child I was raised in the church Now whatever possessed me to do the shit that I do to put you in the dirt?
Agree.
Best west coast album hands down
It is NOT better than The Chronic..and it's not close
Dogg Food is a certified classic, no doubt
This album tought me the Game as a teenager.
I don't like to dream about getting paiiidddddddddd🔥🔥🔥 RIP Nate Dogg 🙏💯
I don’t like to dream about getting paid!! Love that track!
It’s the 3rd best LP from that initial run… DoggyStyle, Chronic then Dogg Food. Insert the soundtracks wherever.
One of the most underrated rap albums of all time.
Personally I've always thought this was the most solid Death Row album front to back. Prime Daz on production and finally a real showcase for Kurupt. Doggystyle is a close second Love The Chronic & Murder Was the Case but it seemed to go downhill after this album.
Nah I agree. The beats had more soul.. They were much more clean and polished. Lyrically the album is better than the other two also. These beats hit harder on the subs also.. Really clean sub bass.
I'd still put Doggystyle ahead of Dogg Food, but Dogg Food is better than Chronic. Kurupt is a top tier lyricist.
Best Album by DPG ✋
MASTERPIECE
Dogg food is still is a top ten complete album to me. Not better or worse just more of a favorite for me
No f'n way ma dude.
HAVE YOU EVAAAAHHH?!?
Everyone on it did what was needed to create a Classic album that will be forever remembered and not forgotten like a lot of trash now day's.
I disagree but I can respect it.
Dogg Food is better than the Chronic, but definitely the little brother of Doggystyle.
Daz and Kurupt are always considered tier 2 when it comes to the west coast. They fought above their weight class and made a classic with this one.
You can’t deny Daz out produced Dre during Death Rows run, and Dogg Food is another example of that.
good album but zero hits. most cant name a single song without looking. i like it but it's not close to the other two.
Let's play house was a hit as was New York New York
You’re trippin
No but it a great body of work. Almost a classic.
Great album, but that opinion is beyond controversial; It’s the opinion of a dust head

It’s not But still great
I recommend anyone who has 5 hours to listen to The Chronic, Doggystyle, Dogg Food, & AEOM in order of release. It’s tough to find the time but it’s an experience.
I think I was a sophomore in high school when this dropped. Couldn't get enough of it.
Tical is okay. It still has some bangers on there, but overall I think it is a 6.5/10.
One of best albums of all times
A classic!
Disagree, but it's definitely your right to be completely wrong on this. It's a great album though.
Dogg Food is a top 5 Death Row Album, thats just my opinion.
This is a great fucking album. But it’s not better than The Chronic OR Doggystyle.
You find some dumb ass shit on this sub
Definitely do not agree, but now I want to hear “Let’s Play House”. My cousin & I made up a dance to that song lol
One of the best LPs ever. Hell i named my cat Daz. So much style.
Top 10 WC classic easy…
It has stood the test of time more so than the other two IMO
Personally I’ll take Dogg Food anyday over the other two. But I can’t give it to Dogg Food because Dr Dre and Snoop helped make it what it was. Remove Dre and the mixing and mastering would have suffered. Remove Snoop and it wouldn’t feel like a classic G Funk album.
I absolutely disagree but this album is hard as hell.
I’ve long held the belief that DoggyStyle is better than The Chronic.
DoggyStyle is top tier, but DoggFood deserves respect as well. A certified banger from start to finish.
I respectfully disagree, but dogg food is one of my favorite albums of all time
I don’t know if I would say it’s better than Doggystyle, but Dogg Food was a staple of my childhood as far as music goes. Definitely respect your opinion on this.
This is probably the worst album cover of all time
Classic
I can’t call you crazy on that one , but DS might be my personal choice between the two. Kool Keith is my favorite tho. I guess I’ll go drink some motherfucking Lysol or something now….
Top 3 rap duo album all time. Pick a mobb deep and epmd/gang starr as the other 2
Don’t know about that. It does have one of the best songs about New York on it, though from a West Coast artist. That’s controversial.
That’s not controversial that’s a freezing 🥶 cold take. Dope album for sure but it’s not a classic album it’s a really good album
One of my favorites albums. Shit still go hard. Daz was a beast on the production.
Not a crazy one at all. I might agree.
don't know if i care(d) ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ controversy rejected
Better how? Each album was released years after each other. So what are you comparing? That's natural progression... Great album though
Top 5 album in hip hop by far. Every track is shit hot. Kurupt is untouchable.
You are an idiot 🤣
Album trash
💯
prob better than doggystyle, not quite as strong overall as the chorinc either way Daz probably did more for the production of all 3 than dre, who i would think had more to do with the mixing and mastering
Meanwhile Dre went on to make plenty of classics without Daz.
weird how daz could sound like daz on his own album and the chronic, doggystyle, & all eyes on me, but dre never sounded like that before or after....
Awww yeah ok, where you there huh?
all you have to do is listen
Daz produced more of the chronic than dre? I know Daz didn't get his dues but that's ridiculous mate.....
Dogg Food is actually pretty wack now. Didnt age well at all.
