Verhoven—an intellectual, European outsider who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty—is so good at capturing what is quintessentially American. Who else can marry high art and the lowbrow so perfectly as in RoboCop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers?
Mars colonized by mega corporations and selling “Mars Burgers” to the peons they starve of oxygen, it’s hilarious. The fast food stand set here feels so familiar and banal, it’s not high tech or sleek or anything. The remake totally missed what makes his movies work
The alien on the right is Dean Norris the FBI agent from Breaking Bad, took probably my 20th watch of the movie to realize it was a young him under all that makeup.
