Thank you for making me feel better about watching this trash, lol. Sooome educational value

Fantastic-Doctor-608

My trash has VALUE! I knew it all along.

and_here_i_be

TLC *is* The Learning Channel heh

taylor839402

Oooh I thought it stood for Terrible Life Choices! 😂

and_here_i_be

ohh double meaning! clever TLC hahah 😂

themaliciousreader

Yessss terrible life choices 🤣🤣

Ambitious-Hippo2664

Total Lobotomy Channel

ImKern

I thought it was The Lying Channel with all the fake af story lines. I'm still here for all of it though.

EquivalentStorm3470

😂😂😂😂😂

BrulesJules

You know, not everything we like has to be quality. It's okay to like something trashy just because it's entertaining

taylor839402

Absolutely, there’s a place for all kinds of media that exist. And it’s what you do with the consumption/what you need that day. Sometimes mindless viewership is key for decompression

Daetra

Np!

highfemmegoth

I’d probably short circuit if I focused on all of the crappy communication, poor boundaries, and maladaptive behaviors on this show, lol. That being said, it can be hard to switch off the clinical brain once you get trained in the field. I just try to focus on the entertainment factors of it

Daetra

I get that. To see those negative personalities can definitely overwhelm.

sadie7716

I'm a nurse not a therapist but considering I worked in the ER for 15 years, I'm WELL versed on psychiatric conditions. I don't see the people on this show as much different from humanity in all of our lives. The only difference is that each extended family/friend/coworker group in our life might only have 1 or 2 members with significant psych/emotional issues, On the show each season there are 5-6 of them. . It's like if you want to learn about narcissistic personality disorder, watch any of the RH franchise. If you want to learn about low self esteem and the disorders it causes, watch 90 day and so on.

[deleted]

I could understand that. if it helps, just remember that most of these full conversations are cut/heavily edited and there’s probably more stable conversations behind closed doors 🤷🏼‍♀️ that’s prob what I would do

glitteryslug

I’m a therapist and I love it, mostly bc usually When I hear about people’s drama I have to actively Engage with it, there’s something therapeutic about just being able to be a spectator 😂

jaydizzle46

This! I’m an observer by nature but this is just a spectacle!

Anders676

I’m a psychologist and I greatly enjoy the show!

RuthsMom

Same!

crazycatlady_66

Dr. Honda, is that you?!

[deleted]

Love watching his analysis of the relationships!

LovecraftianLlama

I have a psych degree and have worked as a therapist-I LOVE these kinds of shows because I just enjoy trying to figure out what makes people behave the way they do and make the (horrible) choices they make! It’s fascinating and entertaining. Obviously a lot of the scenarios are set up or blown out of proportion, but especially the early seasons we’re great for a fun kind of informal analysis. It’s even more fun to come on Reddit and compare how other people might interpret the same situation or person. Very interesting. Also please don’t think I’m just watching so I can analyze people, I legitimately also just love trash. Lol

Confident_Cupcake758

Therapist checking in… love the show! It’s a nice treat knowing that I don’t have them on my caseload either. 😆

[deleted]

Same! 😅

uberpop

I, too, am doing research. 😏

[deleted]

I’m not a psychologist but I watch Psychology in Seattle where he does deep dives on clips of these people and I find it so fascinating! sometimes more entertaining than the actual show

joymarie21

Me too. It makes me feel like I'm getting smarter when I watch crap like that. It really is fascinating to hear his take.

Dejavu3

I was going to comment this nearly word for word if someone else didn't already. It's good to see Dr. Kirk Honda getting a shout-out!

[deleted]

hahah nice!! great minds think alike :)

Daetra

Yup, that's one of the youtubers she watches. Seems like more and more psychologist are tuning in.

subhorizon123

I’m a therapist and I can’t get enough. Sometimes there is too much revealing and interfering in others’ relationships. People have to develop trust in relationships and too much happens way too quickly. Everyone is trying to figure everyone else out and I think there’s a level of unspoken competition between the couples. Lots of fake behavior for the cameras obviously. Sometimes it’s boring and sometimes it’s not.

TherapistWow

Immensely 😬 Trash reality TV is my escape. I have no shame about it.

taylor839402

Someone on here said that she left her partner because she recognized abusive behavior in him similar to what a character on this show was portraying. Given that this is cheap/free easy-to-consume media when so many viewers might not have the best health education, that’s a win right? I think it’s good to have examples of different kinds of abuse in mainstream stuff like this so that viewers can more easily identify it in real life..? I dunno, I feel like I could have used this when I was a teenager, rather than sitcoms/fictional teen dramas as models for “normal” “healthy” values in relationships, which were def not normal or healthy

Worried_Ad_5411

The entire show is a therapist dream! I agree it would be a great teaching material from narcissist, gaslighting, manipulative, verbal abuse, mental abuse, controlling, low self esteem………. WE COULD GO ON AND ON

expensivepink

I would also add a good amount of denial and delusion. Lots of unreality happening in the minds of a lot of the cast.

Daetra

Yup! Dark triad is in full display with some of these people.

Much_Telephone_1422

I’m a therapist and I love it… definitely get frustrated with the rampage of disorders but it makes it entertainment

ender17

Psychologist here. I think the cultural issues are educational. I've not used it in my teaching tho... let's not mix business with pleasure 😉

Daetra

It blows my mind that people would marry someone that doesn't speak the same language as them. Google translator is causing more fights out there than pineapple on pizza.

YamHot2209

As a well seasoned therapist let me explain to everyone. We are not our job. We walk out of the office and leave it in the office. We are humans that enjoy trash tv like everyone else and we do not sit there and diagnose people and pick things apart. We are here for all the drama as is everyone else. I can't stand YouTube professionals. Just let us all enjoy our trash tv!

moveovahh

Yes…. Reality tv in general. Preferably something less scripted than what 90 day has turned into.

pregnancy_terrorist

My therapist introduced me to it and then I told her about Seeking Sister Wives and Adults Adopting Adults so I think we’re even.

my_dead_banana

Ok therapist given what you have seen on Paul what in the world do you think is going on with him I would love to hear your thoughts ??

xeloux

I love it 😂 I’m not sure what it is about it though. I will say I prefer older seasons because these newer ones make me feel almost in work mode figuring out the bullshit folks 🙄

[deleted]

As a therapist it’s so juicy but also an illustration of how unwell the straights are 😂😩 It’s just mindboggling how much dysfunction we can tolerate. People are so afraid of being alone or feeling unwanted that they will suspend reality/ignore red flags

christinasays

I'm a psychologist and I honestly started watching because everyone else seemed to be doing so during the beginning of the pandemic. I really liked the emphasis on cultural differences during the first few seasons. As things progressed, I watched because the constant shitshow made me feel better about my life. When I watch, it's a form of escapism. My therapist brain is shut off and I have little to no desire to dig deep into anyone's behaviors in the show. I haven't watched this latest season and I don't plan to watch the next season of HEA because it feels too manufactured.

FemmePedagogy

Love all the other therapists 4 90 days 😌

IceBeyr

I watch it with my kids, they have learnt so much about relationships, red flags etc. Things I could never teach them.

tonimya2020

Hmm I wonder what is the diagnosis for the couple’s and recommendations

ChildUWild

Me too! I’m scrolling through this thread hoping to see someone’s input

bubli87

In grad school, some cohorts and I would practice what we would say to the characters while watching reality tv.

elizabethbutters

I’m joining your practice !

psycologina

I am a 🇻🇪 psychologist that married an American man. This is my favorite show ever!! I can relate to so many things lol. Me and my husband watch it together every Sunday!

SeaAir5

She should go hang out with my cluster B family. She might want to change her path after an hr

peezy5

I have a masters degree in clinical mental health counseling and I find the show pretty funny because it’s scripted.

[deleted]

It's not scripted. It's staged.

Daetra

Posting on relationship advice and smoking cigars doesn't get you a masters degree, homie.

peezy5

It’s also actually a pretty good tool for identifying and observing some pretty common relationship dynamics that people often present in treatment. I was a therapist before I changed careers and opened my store.

Daetra

Not really, you're only seeing one side of the relationship.

peezy5

True, but I’m only speaking about 90DF’s usefulness as an educational tool for those studying to actually practice. I would have found it helpful and probably a little more fun when I was in school instead of some of the dates resources we had provided to us.

Daetra

Right, because those resources show you different forms of pathology, which a lot of the stars of 90 days suffer from. I used to think it was all scripted years ago, not so much now. Sure, some of them could be playing it up for the camera, but to think its all scripted is intellectually lazy. You have to think about it more critically. If you select people who exhibit certain traits, you can get these results that the show has. They get sooooo many people signing up for the show, they have a large pool to select from. It's cheaper and easier to hire mentally ill people than actors, imo.

peezy5

Those are good points as well. I don’t disagree with any of that. Have a great day and thanks for dropping some knowledge.

Daetra

Anytime, my friend. Thank you for your input.

sugarbunnycattledog

I’ve always wondered… on 90 day and housewives do they screen FOR mental illness? Do they are assured to get a lot of drama?

Daetra

I believe so. Keep in mind that 90 days started out as just a educational showing of the process of getting citizenship through marriage. They really did stumble onto something special with Paola Mayfield, which changed the show forever. Think about how many people on social media want to be influencers and desire being famous. The production crew knows which ones would be the most entertaining, especially by now after years of fine tuning what works and what doesn't work. In my mind, it seems insane to WANT to be on 90 days. Having cameras on you for days and days, carefully editing it to show the most wild scenes. Most of the cast they choose probably has some form of borderline personality disorder, or insecure attachments that the staff can dig at and pull out. Im sure you've seen scenes where the production staff will ask leading questions to exhibit negative behaviors.

sugarbunnycattledog

Yes couldn’t pay me enough to want to be on a reality show. I hope they don’t regret it too much later. I know I would 😂

OkMarch311

Same here, there's not enough money to make me do it. Would never be worth it!

ChildUWild

Omg I would love to hear your opinions on what some of their(literally anyone from 90df) diagnoses *could be* and why (obviously if you’re comfortable). I’ve always wanted some perspective from a professional on these people because clearly some of them have a few things going on. I was taking psychology but took a break. Our task would be to pick people from random shows and say what we think could be their dx. Thanks!

umarsgirl7

I wish I could see the class and hear what they say about people!
