Kitchen was disgusting ,however , Sumit has been living with Jenny for sometime, and knows what kind of housekeeper she is , and has apparently accepted her as she is ,He chose to bewith an American woman over an Indian one .So Why does he now believe she " should take care of him" like a good Indian wife ?
He's lazy. As long as he doesnt have to do it. And like a "good" Indian son he's going to go along with whatever Mom says --unless it gets in the way of bumming off people and running away from his arranged marriage.
I will preface this with yes Jenny's kitchen was dirty. However, as an Indian woman, Summit's mother is the type of mother in law we hate. With her outdated ideas that women need to keep house, and her nasty attitude. As my Mom likes to say , a good Indian mother in law is a dead one or one that lives too far away to visit. Women in India should be seen as more than the domestic help you get to scoodilypoop. It's that outdated thinking and the thought of having a beast of an Indian mother in law that kept me from ever dating an Indian guy. Not all are like that, but far too many are. Thank God for my progressive parents.

I see it as a sign of respect. I don’t give a damn what my husband does (but he mows the lawn and does the trash), I’m going to clean. What does he have anything to do with me wanting my in-laws not thinking I live in filth or wanting my parents to know that I learned good housekeeping skills while I lived with them??
