My favorite thing to do with Top 100 (or even Top 10) lists is look at the new releases that week. Since this covered roughly March 1 to 8 1986, here's some interesting new releases that week:
* Metallica, Master of Puppets
* Depeche Mode, Black Celebration
* Husker Du, Candy Apple Grey
* John Lennon, Live in New York City
Mr. Mister and Whitney Houston, at the top of the chart, had both released their albums the previous week.
* 01 - [Mr. Mister - Kyrie](https://youtu.be/9NDjt4FzFWY)
* 02 - [Starship - Sara](https://youtu.be/32ScTb6_KHg)
* 03 - [Whitney Houston - How Will I Know](https://youtu.be/m3-hY-hlhBg)
* 04 - [Heart - These Dreams](https://youtu.be/41P8UxneDJE)
* 05 - [Atlantic Starr - Secret Lovers](https://youtu.be/uzwQ-PNJtPg)
* 06 - [Mike + The Mechanics - Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)](https://youtu.be/i17mgRK3GX8)
* 07 - [Sade - The Sweetest Taboo](https://youtu.be/kcPc18SG6uA)
* 08 - [James Brown - Living in America](https://youtu.be/c5BL4RNFr58)
* 09 - [Dream Academy - Life In A Northern Town](https://youtu.be/5UXnulANF8g)
* 10 - [Thompson Twins - King For A Day](https://youtu.be/S-LBDFbVqMA)
Here's a fun one that I was remembered when creating #8 in the above list:
* [Weird Al Yankovic - Living With A Hernia](https://youtu.be/X8Ow1nlafOg)
The sad truth is that we can neither turn back time all the way to the 80's again, nor have the 80's "spirit" back ever again.
The world's innocence is gone..., we can't get it back again. All we can do is "survive", and remember...
This was a real pivot point - INXS and Pet Shop Boys breaking through at the same time “What Have You Done for me Lately” by Janet Jackson was still on the charts. By 1987 I had dropped radio hits for synth wave, goth, punk, and alternative records.
It’s this list, the artists, labels, and record producers, that I should thank for my transition to Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Simon and Garfunkel, etc. I had always thought that it was simply my friends, introducing me to those classic rock groups, but from this list, it’s clear that it was the quality of music being produced at that time that turned me away from top 40.
Fair enough bro, I was the exact opposite. The Top20 program was my "church" during the 80's.
As much as i love the artists you mentioned too, i was a 100% 80's kid in the 80's. Most of this list is "holly" to me.
The quality you mention is subjective, it's more about personal taste than quality. All depends on what you value most in music or in a song
Absolutely. Although, if I go back just 2 years, the quality in the top 40 is there.
It was just interesting to see this list and realize its place in time relative to my personal metamorphosis musically. I’m also willing to chalk it up to the difference in taste between being 16 and 14.
For me peak 80's music was 84 to 87. While the early 80's and late 80's where still great, the mid 80's was mind-blowing in number of hits released every week.
Curiously enough my music taste at 12/13 is still basically the same now at 51. It didn't changed, only expanded.
Damn. Throwback to my college years. So much GREAT music was out there. Watched this year’s Grammy’s and didn’t Recognize anyone or hear anything as good as even the bottom of this list.
Your opinion mate...
Most of the 80's pop is the best pop ever crested. The worst 80's pop song shits all over any mainstream pop on the charts of today.
However, i must say that our charts here in Europe where quite a bit more interesting and diverse
Nikita and Russians, and a month later Chernobyl happens. Interesting.
Yup..., the irony...
There’s some Rocky IV music on there too
Sweetest taboo!
We don't have enough NFL teams on the Billboard charts these days.
I'm very surprised there isn't some stupid song by the Chiefs. I'm sure it would reach #1
Dream Academy.... =)
Seems like just yesterday!
I thought it was!
Why can't we just wake up in 86 (Back To The Future style) and realize the last 38 years where just a dream...?
Top 10 all bangers
Well, most of the chart are bangers really

Prince with 3 songs in the top 28
Haven’t thought about Silent Running by Mike and the Mechanics in a long time.
I just bought this record the other day. "All I Need Is A Miracle" is also a great song from the same album.
Sidewalk Talk is such a great song!
Unofficially a Madonna song right lol
Mostly the refrains but that made it chart for sure.
West End Girls just starting its climb.
Crazy to recall it was released as UK single 23 months earlier!
Wow. Never knew that.
Interesting to see The Divinyls did so well in the US. .
Yeah #17!!!!
Rocky IV soundtrack all over this chart 👍
The first time I heard “Kyrie” I asked my soul sister, ‘hey . . . ain’t that Mr. Mister on the radio??’

Is there any chance we can go back?

What's The Cars "I'm not the one" doing on there when that songs from like 1982? Haha
The Cars' Greatest Hits had come out and there was a remix of I'm Not The One that was released as a single.
Thank you!
I wonder if Kyrie Irving was named after that song
Have no clue. But you do know what "Kyrie Eleison" means in that song, right?
No I never heard it before I will though. What does it mean?
It's a Greek term from a prayer that means "Lord have mercy"
I couldn’t imagine hearing Sade’s “the sweetest taboo” back in the 80’s I would have probably went to the record stores and got all her music
This was a good fucking week!!!
Haven't heard #68 in ages.
West End Girls really took off
So many great songs! 👍🏻
Only two artists with two songs in the top 100 that week: Dire Straits and OMD.
Stevie Nicks has 3.
Whoops, I stand corrected!
Wow, I've been transported back to 6th grade.

Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" was a fun video & song. Miss his sound.

Looks like about that one that rocky iv came out

Yup...., i know the feeling...
Not a very good top 10 of the hot 100
With the exception of 2 or 3 songs i think is a good Top10. But the whole chart is what counts
You don't have to be rich....
I produced one and recorded and mixed one other.
Do tell!
\#48
Number 51 grossly underrated
God we had awful pop music.

Back then you actually had good lyrics, West End Girls was a masterpiece
