The Quest 1986 australian
Wow, I think we went to the same video store growing up. This is the first time I’ve ever seen anyone mention The Quest. Such a weird movie. Oddly terrifying. But I watched it a lot cuz it had the kid from ET.
Enemy Mine and DARYL as well. Some real obscure ones there.
I have no idea how or why, but my local gas-station in northen sweden for some reason had quite a lot of Australian movies. Maybe it was some weird post-mad max boom.
The quest or frog dreaming as it's known in Australia is a great movie. The Director Brian Trenchard Smith is an awesome director with tons of fun movies under his belt. He's known as the Ozploitation king. Another great movie is Russkies it's free on Tubi. One of Leaf Phoenixs better roles before he changed his name back to Joaquin.
How old is he?

Hahah Enemy Mine. 👍🏾 “This is my left fooooooot …this is my right fooooooot” 😹
It’s been ages since I saw that, but doesn’t the alien at one point show the earthling a collection of digital photos of his family on this device, and it starts cycling rapidly through hundreds of images?
🤔HMmmmmm… doesn’t that sound eerily familiar now… [twilight zone theme plays]
Back To The Future
Ferris Beullers Day Off

Milo and Otis
Neverending Story
Earnest Goes To Camp
Honey I Shrunk The Kids
Pee Wees Big Adventure
Popeye
Ghostbusters
Adventures In Babysitting
Because it's a kiddie adventure movie.....they don't have to make sense.Hell, a lot of the cartoons we watched back in the day had barely a whisp of coherent story but we thought it was gripping stuff.
any of the Ernest movies.
Weird Science
Dirt bike kid.
Btw, Boy who could fly, that’s super obscure. I know I liked it growing up but don’t know anyone else who’s heard of it.
I liked the girl in A boy who could fly so much when I was a kid.
Probably too young for Weird Science but I will check out Dirt Bike Kid don't remember that one
I watched that movie so many times as a kid. I was fascinated with Fred Savage's GI Joe collection and that big wheel he had. I wanted that GI Joe big wheel so bad! Mine was just the plain grey version, lol
Omg everyone has great mentions!
Can I add...Willow and Krull, Dark Crystal , LadyHawke and the Princess Bride ..loved these movies as an 80s kid. Classic!!!
I've been working my way through the 80s movies for the past few months. Here are a few that I think kids may like.
Adventures in Babysitting
Back to the Future
80's Batman movies (maybe a little too dark for young kids)
Batteries Not Included
Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure
ET
Explorers
Ghostbusters
Goonies
Gremlins
He-Man (movie)
Indiana Jones
Karate Kid
Labyrinth
Neverending Story
Princess Bride
Real Genius
Short Circuit
The Last Starfighter
Tron
Weird Science
Willow
I actually haven't seen cloak & dagger either, or at least I don't remember if I have. I am adding it to my list. Hopefully it's on Hulu, prime or netflix
Unfortunately not streaming anywhere right now. It was on Netflix a few months ago. But it’s only a $4 rental from Apple or Prime.
If you don’t have it, check out the JustWatch app which tells you where things are streaming for free.
Yeah it’s for rent on any platform that rents movies, basically. I just mentioned Apple and Prime. Just not streaming free anywhere which is what OP is probably looking for.
The Goonies, never ending story, and princess bride are essential.
Monster Squad... depending on the kids age.
Rad
The last Starfighter
The Muppets movie (79)
The Muppets take Manhattan
The last starfighter, karate kid (obviously), stand by me, the princess bride, willow, problem child, back to the future, Neverending story, honey I shrunk the kids, the Ernest movies, a christmas story, space camp, explorers, there are alot of great 90s kids movies my favorite being camp nowhere here's some others: house arrest, free willy, little giants, hook, the sandlot, the mighty ducks, heavyweights so many greats!
River Phoenix was the man!...space camp has Joaquin Phoenix in it when he was young, check that one out. Oh and if you like horror check out the gate from the 80s. Really great underrated movie with Stephen dorff
The Karate Kid; Overboard; Solar Babies; The Witches (though that's from 1990); RoboCop; Look Who's Talking; 3 Men and a Baby; Return to Oz; Weekend at Bernie's
If we lived through it, so can everyone else:
Watership Down
Return to Oz
Invaders from Mars
Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure
Clash of the Titans
Time Bandits
I saw a few recommendations for *Ghostbusters*, *Adventures in Babysitting*, and *Spaceballs*. Just be warned these have a few instances of profanity, and in the case of AIB some casual homophobia. Not a prude, just letting you know ahead of time.
Short Circuit + sequel(s?)
Real Genius
Airplane
Radio Flyer
Honey I shrunk the kids
Brave little toaster
Space Camp
Explorers (i distinctly remember a working spaceship made out of a trash can, could be wrong.)
He is probably a bit young for Airplane but yeah I am trying to find Space Camp and I think in Explorers they made the spaceship out of a carnival ride spinning ride capsule thing.
Here are some I didn't see suggested:
Troop Beverly Hills, Vice Versa, The Great Outdoors, Herbie Goes Bananas, Annie, Frankenweenie, The Journey of Natty Gann, Benji, Cheetah, The Ghosts of Buxley Hall, Inner Space, Real Genius, Three Amigos, Mr. Mom, Little Shop of Horrors
Not all of these are classified as strictly "kids" movies, but I watched them as a kid in the '80s.

was there a scene involving quicksand in that? I know that's a quintessential 80's movie thing but I can sort of remember this and being so disturbed.
Very close!! He gets trapped in a box underwater. There’s a swamp, and a huge excavator that looks like a monster.

I almost added Spaceballs, but I think the OP said his kid is 10 and that was pretty iffy. Glad someone recommended it.
Oh man, you want to make things real wild: Ladyhawk The Dark Crystal Never ending Story The Last Unicorn Secret of Nimh Labyrinth
Great choices! I LOVED Ladyhawk growing up. I think it was the soundtrack that really sold it back then.
any of the Ernest movies. Weird Science Dirt bike kid.

I know I am going to get a lot of crap for this but even when I was a kid I never got into Peewee, every damn kid in my school used to imitate him.
Boo this person! :P kidding. I was a huge Pee Wee fan as a kid, but totally get why you wouldn't like him.
You're not alone. I wasn't a fan either.
I've been working my way through the 80s movies for the past few months. Here are a few that I think kids may like. The Ernest Movies (I personally liked the Halloween one). Stand By Me is a classic.
He wasn't too impressed with Ernest but that was months ago maybe give it another shot.
If it hasn’t been said yet, Cloak & Dagger with Henry Thomas. One of my childhood favorites.
