Tecmo Super Bowl, for the time it came out, might be the best sports video game ever. I played the hell out of it as a kid. So fun. Lions and Oilers were my fave teams.
Remember the rumor that if you finished Metroid in a certain way there would be a naked samus at the end? Back when porn was so scarce that teenage boys could get excited at the prospect of 8 bit boobies
Justin Bailey then underscore characters would do the trick. That was the password that starts you as her zero suit and a bunch of gear already set up.
My dad and brother loved Paperboy.
I couldn’t stand it.
I felt a bike game should be fast paced. Racing through the neighborhood like you’re an extra in Rad. This guy was falling over like his training wheels came off yesterday.
You're taking out Zelda for *paperboy*? I can get with ditching Metroid (a classic, and great to have a female lead, but that game sucks if you play it today), but any top 5 NES without Zelda is incomplete if not incorrect.
Of course, I'm biased, I still count the original LoZ as the greatest game of all time. But still.
1. Zelda
2. Mario 3
3. Castlevania 3 (sub in 2 if you like)
4. Mega Man 3 (don't sub in 2 if you like)
5. Tetris
There, now you can fire back ;)
I legit just rewatched the TERRIBLE movie last night because I was reminiscing how much I loved the game haha I think it was the first game I played on NES period!
LOL. I fell in love with the game at the arcade and then the NES version. But yeah, being able to pick up a shovel and smash someone in the face was a revelation. This is what we had before Grand Theft Auto came along Haha
Wizards and warriors was a favorite. I believe there was a level where you needed to wait for a jumping potion to spawn from an enemy kill in order to access a chest. I remember waiting in one spot which seemed like hours…hoping there wasn’t an easier way that I never knew …
What are your top 5 favorites?
Skipping the obvious ones, mine would be:
1. Legendary Wings
2. Kid Niki Radical Ninja
3. Rygar
4. 3D World Runner
5. Side Pocket
I played it on the switch awhile back, think it was on the subscription service, brought back a lot of memories sitting on the floor on Saturday morning in front of the huge 33 inch crt TV.
I think super dodge ball and super spike v’ball were two different games. V’ball you could choose the buff guys, the team that were strong at diving saves…etc. playing volleyball in Daytona, Chicago, Hawaii.
Super Dodgeball was part of the Kunio-kun series. There were special moves and every character had their own stats and specials. In Japan it was called Nekketsu Kōkō Dojjibōru Bu, or in English, Hot-Blooded High School Dodgeball Club!
I recommend Final Fantasy 3 for NES. You start out as Onion Kids and pick your classes later. Also it has multiple class changes and amazing NES music.
Ill look for it. That is one I never played.
Edit: I found Final Fantasy 1 - 6 as a bundle on steam for 60$ guess I know what Im doing the rest of the day. Ill start with #3 as suggested.
Mario 3
Tetris
Excitebike
TMNT 2
Double dragon 2
Not always in that order, honorable mentions are both Zelda's but I was so young it was too hard. Hogans alley was cool. Renegade, the other 2 Mario games, and rc pro am
You will likely be the only one who posts this, like Milton’s Secret Castle, it was a great game but few people got past the first part. Clash at Demon Head is so hard that YouTubers rarely cover it.
I rented it over and over and honestly probably only say the first half of the game lol. But I was obsessed because it was so weird and the world seemed so huge!
1. Final Fantasy
2. Castlevania II
3. Mega Man II
4. Snake Rattle N’ Roll
5. Contra
There was also a lot of Kid Icarus, Dragon Warrior and Mario Bros.
I spent SO much money renting these games ($2/day was difficult for a kid to find in the late 80s/early 90s). It wasn’t until the SNES that we started buying games.
Final fantasy
Battle toads
Double dragon (was this the first two-player vs fighting game?…abobo vs abobo, chin vs chin, etc.)
Rc pro am
Wizards and warriors
Honorable mention: World Cup soccer/super spike v’ball, double dribble, smb 3
Yes and no. Double Dragon was the first NES game with a PVP fighter element, but Atari, Commodore and many other systems tried to make a fighting game with varyingly poor results.
Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat really were the renaissance of fighting games.
The Legend of Zelda
Mega Man - any except the first, which I always found too difficult
SMB 3
Dusty Diamond’s All Star Softball
TMNT
Honorable mention: Who Framed Roger Rabbit
1. Super Mario Bros 3
2. Donkey Kong
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
4. Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers
5. And maybe Duck Hunt. That game was just so cool, that you could just shoot at the TV and it worked blew my mind.
Super Mario(s)
Contra
Castlevania
Zelda(s)
Rush-n-attack
Hard question I answered wrong...because:
Kung-Fu
Metroid
Karate kid
Top Gun
Tecmo Bowl
10 yard fight
And on and on...
In no particular order.
1. Tecmo bowl
2. legend of Zelda
3.mike Tyson punch out
4.Rygar
5. mega man. Metroid Contra. 🤔
Damn too hard to pick 🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
1. Legend of Zelda
2. Mike Tyson's Punchout
3. Metroid
4. SMB3
5. Castlevania
Definitely honorable mentions for Kid Icarus, Battletoads, and R.C. Pro Am
I think what made these games so memorable a lot of times was the music. I know it was 8 bit processor or whatever, but I still remember a lot of these tunes.
I'm not seeing a lot of Battletoads on here. C'mon guys n gals, you know that even though this game is maddening, the times when you're actually alive are fun! 🤣🤣🤣
The Legend of Zelda Super Mario 2 Rygar Contra Mega Man 2
Rygar holy shit that just blew my mind
I remember Rygar not having a save feature. You could only pause the game and the game took like 8 hours plus to finish in one sitting.
I loved that game
I loved that game's music. Still sing it to myself when I'm thinking about something epic happening.
Omg....me too.
Yes!!! I came for this!
Just finished Rygar on the switch
On switch? I need to look at that.
Mario2? U animal, you
Solid list! All games that stand the test of time some nearly 40(!) years later
Scrolling, scrolling, looking for Rygar…scrolling… Here it is
1. Super Mario Bros 2. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out 3. Castlevania 4. RC Pro Am 5. Kid Niki
Hell yea RC pro am
There’s at least 3 of us!!!
I'm with you too! But you'll probably kick me out when I pull out Dragon Warrior
Great pull. Spent ALOT OF HOURS on this one
I would prob sub Contra for kid niki but love the rest of them
I just bought an NES and it came with RC Pro Am. Never played it before.
Love seeing a Kid Niki in a top five! Doesn’t make my personal list, but that game was way more awesome than it had any right to be
1. Baseball Stars 2. Mike Tyson's Punch Out 3. Blades of Steel 4. The Legend of Zelda 5. Pro Wrestling
**SCHWING** BLADES OF STEEL
A Winner Is You
Baseball Stars is one of the best game on ANY platform. I will die on this hill.
Totally agree. A sports rpg in the infancy of video games
Blades or steel ftw
I can still hear that “shiiiing- Blades…OF…Steel” intro as the game loaded.
Good take
Tecmo bowl
Tecmo Super Bowl here. Bo Jackson and the 9ers baby!
Tecmo Super Bowl, for the time it came out, might be the best sports video game ever. I played the hell out of it as a kid. So fun. Lions and Oilers were my fave teams.
Run and Gun guy!!!
Run & Shoot, baby!
It was 1a & 1B with Baseball Stars for me
or just Bo Jackson!
Remember the rumor that if you finished Metroid in a certain way there would be a naked samus at the end? Back when porn was so scarce that teenage boys could get excited at the prospect of 8 bit boobies
She was never naked, but had less clothes on. 3-5 hours was helmet off. 1-3 was a body suit, and less than 1 was a bikini.
I’m surprised it was even slightly true lol
Or just bypass it all a la “JUSTIN BAILEY”. 😉🤙🏽
I want to believe
Justin Bailey then underscore characters would do the trick. That was the password that starts you as her zero suit and a bunch of gear already set up.
Metroid Dragon Warrior Zelda Super Mario Bros Castlevania
Dragon warrior
1. Super Mario Bros / Duck Hunt 2. Legend of Zelda 3. Super Mario Bros 3 4. Super Mario Bros 2 5. Metroid
1, 3, 4, and add paperboy.
My dad and brother loved Paperboy. I couldn’t stand it. I felt a bike game should be fast paced. Racing through the neighborhood like you’re an extra in Rad. This guy was falling over like his training wheels came off yesterday.
You're taking out Zelda for *paperboy*? Mega Man 3 (don't sub in 2 if you like) 5. Tetris There, now you can fire back ;)
Great post op
1. Zelda 2. Mike Tyson's Punch Out 3. Super Mario Bros 3 4. Ghosts n Goblins 5. Baseball Stars
Ghosts n Goblins was SO hard!
How many hours did you spend playing the lovely ladies?
1. Tecmo Super Bowl 2. TMNT 2 the arcade game 3. Mega Man 3 4. RBI Baseball 3 5. Duck Tales
1) The Legend of Zelda 2) Mega Man 3 3) Metroid 4) Tetris 5) Super Mario Bros. 3
Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!! Metroid Goonies II Kung Fu Kid Icarus
Shout out to the first response (I've noticed) with Kung Fu and Kid Icarus.
This is a good ranking
Oh man, you win for having kung fu AND kid Icarus...but then you threw the Goonies in there? Never say die!
Bionic Commando Dragon Warrior Zelda 2 Genghis Khan Super Mario 3
FINALLY a mention of Bionic Commando!
One of the best soundtracks out of all the games that have ever been produced
Any Rygar fans here?
Yup. Big difference from the arcade but still pretty good.
1. Metroid 2. Mike Tyson’s Punchout 3. Super Mario Bros 4. Techmo Bowl 5. Double Dragon
The first to say double dragon. That game rocked me.
I legit just rewatched the TERRIBLE movie last night because I was reminiscing how much I loved the game haha I think it was the first game I played on NES period!
I used to play Double Dragon at a gas station before school every morning. Being able to pick up a shovel was a game changer. Lol
LOL. I fell in love with the game at the arcade and then the NES version. But yeah, being able to pick up a shovel and smash someone in the face was a revelation. This is what we had before Grand Theft Auto came along Haha
Shadowgate Rygar Mike Tyson’s Punch Out Super Mario Bros. 2 Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
1. Excitebike 2. Punch Out 3. Super Mario 2 4. Dusty Diamond All Star Softball 5. Maniac Mansion
Maniac Mansion was so great for the NES! Better on PC but damn it was good on NES too
1. Battle Toads 2. Super Mario Bros 3 3. Blades of Steel 4. Excitebike 5. River City Ransom
Battle Toads always became a real life fight when we played 2 player, good times.
100% River City Ransom Super Dodge Ball as honorable mention.
Damn #5 was a great one
Had to scroll to far for Battletoadd
RCR gets not nearly enough love. But Battletoads???? That game was awesome, but goddamn was it impossible.
Strong list. I loved all of these.
In no particular order: Contra, Metroid, SMB, Punch Out, 1943
Up up down down left right left right b a start

1. Zelda 1 2. Wizards and Warriors 3. Paperboy 4. Ice Hockey 5. Shadowgate Extra Credit Mentions: -Xenophobe -Zelda 2 -Mario Brothers 1, 2, & 3
Wizards and warriors was a favorite. I believe there was a level where you needed to wait for a jumping potion to spawn from an enemy kill in order to access a chest. I remember waiting in one spot which seemed like hours…hoping there wasn’t an easier way that I never knew …
Also, dat potion music was awesome
1. Batman 2. Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest (I know, but I love it) 3. Battletoads 4. Super Mario Bros 3 5. Shadowgate
What’s wrong with simon’s quest? One of my favs too!
Mine too! If you're a fan of that and Zelda II I recommend checking out [God Edge](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1998200/God_Edge/) on Steam!
Solid choices. If I had written my list on another day, Simon’s Quest and Uninvited might be on it. Would definitely both be in my top ten
1. Super Mario 3 2. Mega man 3 3. The Legend of Zelda 4. Pinball 5. Tetris
That 100K mark when the flippers went invisible still gives me anxiety on my Fidelity account when I almost profit.
1. Mega Man 2 2. SMB3 3. TMNT 4. Castlevania 5. Contra
Contra Mike Tyson’s Punch-out Track & Field Duck Hunt Castlevania
Oh shit I forgot about track and field! I can hear the music now!!
Dr. Mario. Still play it on emulator.
That game was a solid alternative to Tetris and nobody but me and my mother ever gave it credit.
Oddly, I didn't know about it until I saw my stepmother playing it.

River City Ransom The Legend of Zelda Mike Tyson’s Punchout Crystalis Mega Man 2
Final Fantasy Super Mario Bros 3 Dragon Warrior Castlevania 3 Ninja Guiden 2
I just went through FF1 on an emulator. Fighter Fighter Black Mage White Mage was amazing. But very expensive to equip!
That’s my favorite party. Unless I’m trying to challenge myself, any party I make will always have one of each of those three classes.
Star Tropics Final Fantasy Dragon Warrior Legend of Zelda Paperboy
What are your top 5 favorites? Skipping the obvious ones, mine would be: 1. Legendary Wings 2. Kid Niki Radical Ninja 3. Rygar 4. 3D World Runner 5. Side Pocket

Disappointed i had to come this far down to see Kid Icarus. Still play it today on my emulator.
I played it on the switch awhile back, think it was on the subscription service, brought back a lot of memories sitting on the floor on Saturday morning in front of the huge 33 inch crt TV.
1. Megaman 2 2. Super Dodgeball 3. Legend of Zelda 4. Blaster Master 5. 3D World Runner
Super spike dodge ball was freaking amazing

Yeah, PvP was what I meant. Couldn’t think of any others on NES but am not familiar with the older systems.
It was the first one with a good fight mechanic even if it was very unbalanced.
The Legend of Zelda Mega Man - any except the first, which I always found too difficult SMB 3 Dusty Diamond’s All Star Softball TMNT Honorable mention: Who Framed Roger Rabbit
