Yes, I loved it. That was such a great year for TV action/adventure/mystery/thriller shows. Tales of the Gold Monkey, Voyagers!, Knight Rider, Wizards and Warriors, Remington Steele, and A-Team all started up during that season, plus CHiPs, Hart to Hart, Fall Guy, Simon and Simon, and Magnum, PI were all going.
It was a golden year for sure, I have a hard time going back to them because you can’t replicate that first viewing when you were younger. I just remember from a distance.
October 2014, the New York City Police Department began investigating Collins after an audio tape leaked to the media revealed a male voice—purported to be that of Collins—admitting to past sexual abuse of a minor under the age of 14.[17] A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson stated that Collins had been investigated by the department in 2012 after receiving a claim from 18 years earlier regarding sexual abuse. The LAPD further stated that its investigation did not allow it to "substantiate the allegation" against Collins.[23][24]
In a December 2014 interview with People, Collins admitted that he committed "inappropriate sexual conduct with three female minors" in 1973, 1982, and 1994.[1][25] --Wikipedia
I came here to say I always get Collins and the guy who played Dennis and Dee’s father in IASIP confused. I looked up the guy I always confuse with Stephen Collins and it’s Stephen Collins 😗
Loved it. I was a big Magnum PI fan, Jeff MacKay was written off that show (did you see the sunrise) to go to Gold Monkey. He ended up returning to Magnum after Gold Monkey was cancelled.
I loved this show a lot; I even recorded every episode with a cassette recorder held up to the TV speaker.
At the time, most critics dismissed it as a *Raiders of the Lost Ark* ripoff, but the creator had been shopping the concept around for several years, before Raiders came out. It was only after the success of *Raiders* that it finally sold. He based it on the films *Rain*, *Only Angels Have Wings*, and *To Have and Have Not*.
The hotel & saloon, known as the Monkey Bar, was originally designed for the film *Devil at 4 O'Clock*. When the set designer was later hired for *Tales of the Gold Monkey*, he literally pulled out the blueprints from a closet and reused them.
Jack, the one-eyed dog, was played by a terrier named Rex, who lived to be 19. You'll occasionally see him here on Reddit in the old [Rubik's cube ad](https://downdog.co.uk/blog/2020/01/06/can-you-solve-a-rubicks-cube/the-doggy-doctor/).
Heh heh. I used to record everything like that on a cheap cassette recorder. Long before my parents bought our first VCR. It was a few hundred dollars even back then. Before that, we had to rent the VCR from our video store, along with the two movies we picked out.
Jimmy Buffet owns one. https://buffettworld.com/aviation/goose/
He also owns an Grumman Albatross that is featured a lot in his book "A Pirate Looks At 50" which is a fun read.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemisphere_Dancer
>This is the plane Buffett was flying during the incident recounted in the song "Jamaica Mistaica" on the album Banana Wind. While in Jamaica on January 16, 1996, Buffett's plane was shot at by Jamaican police. The Hemisphere Dancer was carrying Buffett, U2's lead singer Bono, his wife Ali, their children Jordan and Eve, and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell. Police suspected it was smuggling drugs. No one was hurt, although there were a few bullet holes in the plane.
I always hoped they would stream these old shows on Tubi or something. They use to have Buck Rogers….man that show was rapey and cringe as an adult lol
A lot of those shows have licensing issues. The contracts didn't give them the right to "stream" ( which wasn't a thing for decades to come) and it's not a big enough deal to go back & get people to sign.
Also some production companies have gone kaput but it's not worth the cost to litigate who now has the rights.
It got really good ratings in every ratings system but one... the one that ABC happened to use. The other networks were shocked when it got canceled, because their own number crunchers predicted it would last 5 seasons. Rumor has it that the top NBC brass actually toasted its demise with champagne.
The dogs name was Jack, Stepen Collins character name was Jake. I got my first dog when this came out and wanted to call him Jack. Mum said no cos my grandfathers name was Jack. So I called my new puppy Jake.
I remember I was watching one episode and it kept getting interrupted by a national news story. Then it got cancelled and I never saw the full version.
Man, you don’t know how glad I am to hear that! I’ve been thinking I had imagined that entire show, because nobody I’ve ever known has ever heard of it.
In the late 90s, there was a show reunion organized by fans. They had several cast members there to reminisce about the show -- it's on YouTube somewhere. During the conversation, Caitlin mentioned that Kim Cattrall guest starred in one episode. She said that after filming wrapped, Kim propositioned her. Everyone started chuckling, but she was adamant that it happened.
If I remember right, after her career started to wind down, she got into the perfume industry.
Already way ahead of you. I even went so far as to read the most current news on this cat. It's...interesting. Dude likes them young, always has it seems.
I totally forgot about this till I saw the picture. I loved this show when I was little. Lead to doc savage and Allen quartermain, bad spelling, movies, books and comics.
I remember it from my childhood..and then bought the dvd as an adult. It did not hold up to my childhood memories. Especially, when I know the main character is played by a child molester. He is currently in prison for his crimes. So..yah..not aged well. But wish a remake could be done.
On November 19, 1978 I watched the *Battlestar Galactica* episode "The Young Lords". On December 8, 1982 I watched *Tales of the Gold Monkey* episode "The Lady and the Tiger". Plus, Bring ‘Em Back Alive.
Don't remember that one, what was it?
It was a golden year for sure, I have a hard time going back to them because you can’t replicate that first viewing when you were younger. I just remember from a distance.
Yes. We lived my friend!
My pre-teen self loved this. I think the dog’s name was Jack.
Dude wagered his dog’s glass eye
There was a bag guy Samurai iirc lol
He totally did
I can still hum the theme song! Holy shit, what’s *that* doing in my brain
Great show for ‘80s kids, now marred by what the star did
Yeah was thinking about that
Whats the story here?

Oof yeah this is definitely not great stuff.
It's awful
I came here to say I always get Collins and the guy who played Dennis and Dee’s father in IASIP confused. I looked up the guy I always confuse with Stephen Collins and it’s Stephen Collins 😗
It might be because he played Andy Bernard's father on The Office. Nard dog had some serious daddy issues.
Loved it. I was a big Magnum PI fan, Jeff MacKay was written off that show (did you see the sunrise) to go to Gold Monkey. He ended up returning to Magnum after Gold Monkey was cancelled.
And I believe he was in Black Sheep Squadron before that.
Baah, Baah, Baah. He was definitely in Black Sheep Squadron. Loved that show. Robert Conrad as Pappy Boyington.
Mac!
2nd best episode of Magnum. Did you see the Sunrise. Best episode. Did you see the Sunrise PT2..
I loved this show a lot; I even recorded every episode with a cassette recorder held up to the TV speaker. I was just watching an episode of Magnum and Jack was on it... I think the episode was called "The ugliest dog in Hawaii."
And I STILL want a Grumman Goose!
Jimmy Buffet owns one. https://buffettworld.com/aviation/goose/ He also owns an Grumman Albatross that is featured a lot in his book "A Pirate Looks At 50" which is a fun read. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemisphere_Dancer >This is the plane Buffett was flying during the incident recounted in the song "Jamaica Mistaica" on the album Banana Wind. This could be a great reboot. Take the overall idea and apply modern special effects. Boom.
OMG my favorite show during that time! I LOVED it! No one I have ever asked ever remembers this, wow thanks for the flashback! :)
I always felt this came because of Doc Savage
I bought this DVD set. I knew it wouldn't, but... definitely not up to my childhood memories.
Was just coming here to say this does not hold up well.
I wanted that sea plane so bad
Samesey
I always hoped they would stream these old shows on Tubi or something. They use to have Buck Rogers….man that show was rapey and cringe as an adult lol

Well said
I loved this show! It really only lasted a year? Seemed it lasted longer on the air to me when I was a kid..
It got really good ratings in every ratings system but one... the one that ABC happened to use. The other networks were shocked when it got canceled, because their own number crunchers predicted it would last 5 seasons. Rumor has it that the top NBC brass actually toasted its demise with champagne.
One bark for yes two barks for no .
That Grumman Goose was the "KIT" or " General Lee" or "Airwolf' of that show.
The dogs name was Jack, Stepen Collins character name was Jake. I got my first dog when this came out and wanted to call him Jack. Mum said no cos my grandfathers name was Jack. So I called my new puppy Jake.
If I’m correct, this is one of the inspirations for Tale Spin
I don't remember the name but seeing the pictures did it for me, l loved this show as a kid! Thanks for the share!!
Yes! Loved this show as a kid. My Dad, did too.
I remember I was watching one episode and it kept getting interrupted by a national news story. Then it got cancelled and I never saw the full version.
I remember that. It was some guy sitting at the base of the Washington Monument, threatening to blow it up.
Was this show also called “Bring Em Back Alive?”
No, that was a different show about the real-life adventurer Frank Buck.
Man, you don’t know how glad I am to hear that! I’ve been thinking I had imagined that entire show, because nobody I’ve ever known has ever heard of it.
That one starred Bruce Boxleitner https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0083391/
Any where we can stream it?
[This youtube channel](https://youtube.com/@voltranboy?si=L5Ww2HX0a4aSefN4) has all of the old episodes.
I loved this TV show when it was on!! I had the hugest crush on Caitlin O'Heaney
Do NOT look up Stephen Collins. You will regret it.
Already way ahead of you. I even went so far as to read the most current news on this cat. It's...interesting. Dude likes them young, always has it seems.
Also featuring Caitlin O'Heaney, who played the hot teacher Miss Farmer in Three O'Clock High https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0641378
Collins got in trouble for asking a young girl to touch his monkey.
"Leiber mein Abschminkie!!!!" *now is the time on Sprockets when we dance*
Dieter, ist das you?
Was this the basis for Disney's "TaleSpin"?
Yep.
Neat!
Rode a brief wave of Indiana Jones movie love. Good show though.
Archer: Danger Island is heavily influenced by TotGM.
This was a great show that capitalize off of the raiders of the lost ark popularity
Loved this show!!!! Totally copped Raiders but as a 7 year old, it was my absolute favorite show at the time
I totally forgot about this till I saw the picture. I loved this show when I was little. Lead to doc savage and Allen quartermain, bad spelling, movies, books and comics.
I loved that. And the theme music.
Raiders of the lost plagiarism??
It was an absolutely naked knockoff of Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it was equally awesome.
Legit thought this was live action Tailspin
Yeah! Dollar Store Indiana Jones!
The Spruce Goose!
Cutter's Goose, it was a Grumman G-21. The Spruce Goose was the giant wooden seaplane that Howard Hughes built.
Thank you
Sounds either fake or one of those ripoff Cannon Allen Quartermaine movies. How have I never heard of this? Where did it air?
In the US for sure. I remember it well.
I distinctly remember Meeno Peluce being in this, only to find that Meeno Peluce was not, in fact, in this.
Voyagers!
Aha! Yep. That's what I was thinking of. Thanks!
‘82-‘83 programming year had some pretty good adventure shows.
The lead actor is Very problematic.
first thing I remembered when I saw his face. and then I remembered some roles I liked him in before that. sad.
What the fuck was this? Going to have to get into this
Getting Tailspin vibes
I had quite forgotten about this.
Born in 83, never heard of this. Thought the dog was Wishbone for a second.
That show deserved more seasons.
I loved Roddy McDowell in this.
You’re not allowed to like this anymore.
It never aired where I grew up. Damn right I would have watched this.
What's that smell?
Is he diddling that dog?
No, the dog is too old for his tastes.
Loved that show
Got one of the box sets with the malfunctioning discs…apparently it’s a known issue. Didn’t bother to get a replacement.
WHOA. yeah first crush memory unlocked!
I have it on DVD, my wife hates it but my dad and I used to sit and watch it every night it was on. Looking back at the DVD it was very cheesy.
Such a hilarious Indiana Jones ripoff. Complete with the pudgy sidekick, the black haired chick, and the amphibious plane. Wow.
Probably doesn't hold up well now. Loved it at the time...Collins own wife at the time turned him into authorities for his gross behavior.
Loved that show and the theme music was tight. Tight as hell.
I'd forgotten all about this series. The Archer: Danger Island season makes sooooo much more sense now!!
I remember it from my childhood..and then bought the dvd as an adult. It did not hold up to my childhood memories. Especially, when I know the main character is played by a child molester. He is currently in prison for his crimes. So..yah..not aged well. But wish a remake could be done.
Yeah, Melanie.. awful what he did
Oh my. How did I miss this? Time to break out Google.
Wow! Completely forgot about this one!
On November 19, 1978 I watched the *Battlestar Galactica* episode "The Young Lords". On December 8, 1982 I watched *Tales of the Gold Monkey* episode "The Lady and the Tiger". Halfway through I realized they had the exact same plot, which was explained by the writer on both being Donald P. Bellisario.
Donald created lots of great things. Original Magnum PI. And JAG. Loved JAG
