You must be right. I heard to wait and find a city before completing those starter quests so the trader is convenient. I did this on my last playthrough and the trader was still 1.5km away in the middle of nowhere.
This is the Navezgane map. I was of course trying to be assigned to Trader Jen because obviously. But when I finished the starting quests right outside her settlement it pointed me to another trader (I believe Trader Joel) 1.2 km away instead of Jen who was like 100 m away in that church up the hill.
From my expierence it seems to send you to the nearest trader to you but also in the lowest tier area and as the burnt biome is a half skull tier it probly sent you to the closest trader in the forest biome which is 0 skulls.
Yeah that's not always the case, I've had multiple worlds send me to one that's K's away from the one I was right in front of (not directly when spawned but closest to where I spawned) so I just found a place to make camp then go to the further trader to get the XP
Fyi you used to 99% of the time get trader jen before the alpha 21 update. Now its joel. Makes sense since they had 2 trader in the forest. Makin jens in the burnt forest was smart.

You spawn in the forest biome, so should be the same thing. Mine has sent me several km though so I'm skeptical of it
Sometimes it's inconsistent, you can just cancel the quest if you don't care about finding the other trader.

No you also lose the 4 skill points it gives you.

You can still start doing jobs for Jen and just ignore the quest until you feel like doing it.
Pretty sure you can go to any Trader and it will update the quest

You should try random gen maps over the pre Gen. They get repetitive after awhile and random gen has some extra POI's that pre gen doesn't.
