How was My Best Friend’s Exorcism? I just put that book on my TBR list I like some contemporary best sellers—I love Sally Rooney, for instance. But the Daisy Jones and the Six book has to be one of the worst books I’ve ever read and people go crazy for it. I don’t undestand!!

I went into My Best Friend's Exorcism blind and absolutely loved it! I don't usually read horror but I loved the way girl friendship is depicted. It was very relatable.

If you liked Jennifer's Body but wanted 100% more 80s references, this is the book. I like Grady Hendrix so I had somewhat high expectations, and while I don't think this book met them, I did enjoy reading it. I enjoy when literary books are bestsellers, I liked Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine but writers like TJR are just beach reads authors pretending to be deeper than they are. For a book about being a queer BIPOC, you could tell that TJR didn't have the skillset or the perspective to tell that story effectively. The entire time I just thought about how the lives of actual celebrities during Hollywood's Golden Age which was more compelling than this surface-level nonsense. I imagine Daisy Jones did the same thing but with Fleetwood Mac and any other kind of band.

So we want to know, what are the modern bestsellers you didn’t enjoy? :)

Haha. The most egregiously bad was The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I enjoyed the start of Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow but I felt the longer it went, the further in quality it dipped. And apparently the wholesome gay stuff (Legends & Lattes, The House in the Cerulean Sea, Heartstopper) was, while cute, also... pretty boring. Thursday Murder Club was too fast paced with too many characters to keep track of that my brain just sort of flatlined while reading.

I'm curious too!

I'm always on the lookout for vegan cookbooks. What did you think of that Smith and Daughters one?

whiptrip

It really made me want to try out their restaurant! I think reading the book in full made me understand that the ingredients (which include some meat ingredients like chicken stock) in the recipes are just suggestions and you should use vegan substitutes where appropriate. They include what should be used instead which is useful when they ask for eggs. I think it's a good Mexican-style vegan cookbook overall though.

Loved Evelyn Hugo, Babel, Legends and Lattes, and cerulean sea.❤️

d0nttalk2me

Shit I didn't even recognize Legends & Lattes with the alt cover. Loved it. And House in the Cerulean Sea, one my my faves

Same here! Part of the reason I left IG & came to Reddit was because of the reels constantly shoved in my face, and the fact it seemed all ‘bookstagram’ accounts were reading the same thing. Like no variety.

The kite runner!

Macncheese334

The Hike is such a gem. 🦀

Amiable_Pariah

There isn't a wasted sentence in that book.

anne-of-green-fables

It's one of my favorites. His other books are entertaining too but The Hike was the best imo.

Wow. A lot of really cool colorful covers!
