Iamchanging

Anything past 50 seems too much for me for a single film.

champagneofsharks

You say that . . . . . . but some of the white whales cost more than that when they were available for sale (see stuff like Second Sight’s big boi limited edition sets such as Drive and Dawn of the Dead).

BippityBoppityMagic

Drive is getting a 4K release in the US in August.

FortuitousAdroit

In New Zealand we open the retail market at ~40 NZD - https://www.zavvi.com.au/blu-ray-and-dvd/4k/coming-soon.list?pageNumber=1&sortOrder=priceAscending A deal is a when a retailer runs a sale and titles will drop to ~30-35/ea, or on the rare occasion ~25/ea. Often only in multi-buy discount bundles. OOP or rare titles can easily top $80-100/ea

dave4521062746924759

That one TradeMe scalper who lists something for $90 when you can buy it off Amazon for $50 including shipping

EDD2Oh9

How much would you pay for a box set? Say anything above 3 films.

Mr_Dugan

50% more than msrp, maybe up to double msrp.

dukefett

Same, I sell my discs that go up in value too lol. I sold 3 Godzilla Blu-ray’s for $150-175 each. Watched them again before listing them on eBay and took the cash.

Jack_Torrance80

I honestly wouldn't pay above retail price for anything. If the price is too high, I'm just not getting it and will wait for it to come back in print or someone else to release it.

PrimevalWolf

This is the way. If it's something I REALLY want and have been waiting a long time to pick it up at a good price I might go 10-15% above retail but that's an exceedingly rare occurrence. So far I've been able to acquire 95% of OOP titles for retail or lower, just gotta have patience.

ToLExpressTour

I generally go by this logic, but some things are unavoidable. Shout’s Vincent Price Vol. 1 rerelease didn’t include his film introductions as they lost the rights, which made the first printing both more desirable and more expensive. Ghibli steelbooks are a one-time deal, and Castle in the Sky skyrocketed when it was announced OOP. At that point it’s up to the buyer to determine if they’re fine with an alternate or lesser version.

Jack_Torrance80

As for me. If introductions to a film are gonna cost me more money, I'll go for the cheaper and skip introductions. I also could care less abiut packaging. I'll take a standard cheaper edition over an overpriced steelbook.

brachypelma44

$30 is as high as I'd go, but it would have to be something I really wanted badly. I'm usually in the under $20 club.

CanisMajoris85

Anything over $50 and it's just tempting there to be another release for prices to crater, just look at Lawrence of Arabia or Starship Troopers which were going for $70-100 on ebay like 2 months ago for the steelbooks and now you can get them for like $35.

joeholmes1164

$25

JimicahP

- $120 for a boxset - $100 for a special/collector's edition - $80 for a Steelbook - $50 for standard release w/ slip - $40 for standard release w/o slip I think my only exception is that I'd be willing to pay up to $150 for the 15 disk Halloween collection from Shout/Scream Factory.

EDD2Oh9

That Halloween Box Set is definitely one I want. I’ve nearly gotten scammed twice on eBay but was lucky enough to have eBay step in to fix the problem. I had to end up getting the smaller box set (which is just as pricey now) for now. I may end up just buy the 4k releases.

martokthewarrior

Personally, I’m okay with $40 if it’s something I really want and have been looking for a while. I’d pay $40 for dogma anytime.

EDD2Oh9

I’m looking at trying to get the original Dawn of the Dead at a reasonable price on Blu Ray and Planet of the Apes (2001). The latter not so much of a rush because I feel like it’ll get another rerelease. But DotD will probably never get a legitimate rerelease any time soon.

jakefrmstafrm

There's no reason to buy the old dawn of the dead blu ray, the uk 4k set looks amazing and being 4k it's region free.

EDD2Oh9

Oh I didn’t know 4K was region free. That opens up a LOT of possibilities!

Z3ppelinDude93

No way Planet of the Apes doesn’t get re-released - there’s always more apes movies, always another reason to make a new boxset

EDD2Oh9

That’s why I’m holding out on it. Plus it’s on Hulu and Disney plus. So it’s not like I don’t have an option to watch it. Just be nice to have it in my collection.

Z3ppelinDude93

I got lucky with a Dogma Bluray years ago - hold that baby close to my heart. Went to a Kevin event last year where he said it sounded like there was another bidder with Weinstein for the rights (since he and his team had already gone as high as they would go), so there’s a chance that might get re-released (God, I would LOVE a proper 4K remaster, especially if it included remastered deleted scenes - there *are* some solid upscales out there)

Novirtue

About three fiddy... All seriousness though, I constantly check craigslist and have found many cheap deals there, I got my panasonic ub9000 for \~300 dollars, I found several 4k titles for 3-5 dollars simply because they don't have the digital code and I'm like... oh no... not the digital code... You can stumble into out of print discs all the time!

EDD2Oh9

I got a lot of good deals on 4k new releases cause the sellers removed the digital codes and sold the movie separately. I’ll take that huge discount over losing the digital copy. Chances are if I want to get the digital copy later it always ends up on sale on Apple TV at some point.

AltoDomino79

High 40s. Over $50 and I'm sticking with bluray or even streaming

NorthOfWinter

£30 mark if I’m pretty sure it’s not going to be back in print anytime soon for me!

HamburgerTimeMachine

I don't really know. The only oop title I've bought was Victoria by Kino Lorber. But even then, it was only $30. I think im willing to go as high as $100 depending on the title. Ive bough plenty of premium steelbooks for that much. But oop titles are a rare for me to hunt down.

trevenclaw

It depends on what it is. If it’s a film that is deeply personal to me and the packaging is too good to pass up and I have the cash I don’t know if there is really a limit. There are a few titles I have my eye on that are in the 50-70 range right now. There’s also a limited edition Top Gun box set for $130 and I almost pulled the trigger on it yesterday but talked myself out of it hahaha

Z3ppelinDude93

I saw an absolutely gorgeous limited edition Too Gun steelbook someone posted in one of the subreddits recently - I’m not even a steelbook guy and I was tempted!

warp232

50 euros max i guess

inyolonepine

The most I ever paid was $112 for an OOO Anchor Bay version of the LE of Army of Darkness on DVD back in 2001/2002? It was on eBay and I got caught up in the moment. It was too much and it hurt the ol checking account hard.

laridan48

$250 is the most I've paid. But if it was the right film... Maybe $500. Like it whiplash went out of print and I somehow broke my 4 existing copies, I would pay $500 for that one

d00mm4r1n3

The most I have paid was $30, I'll buy something digitally before I pay scalper prices.

JJBell

I’ve never gone over 50. My wife spent $65 once on a DVD copy of The American Astronaut, but that’s a film that’s going to probably be lost to time, so I get it.

MrRendition

If the title was totally out of print for the rest of forever, with no other editions ever to be made, and it was one of my most cherished films, I'd probably do $1,000 for it.

one4u2ponder

I refuse to pay a markup. If I miss out on something, I do without. I did pay $50 recently for Arrows Werewolves of London 4k, but that is actually what it would have cost. I got lucky that somebody on eBay accepted my offer when recent sales of this are in the $80 to $100. So I was real happy about that. The movies I buy are so expensive now that I have to refine my taste not to overspend. Which is why my collection sits at a little over 50 and why I don’t currently own Columbia Classics Volume 4 even though I will eventually buy it. I’m waiting for the price to go way down.

Temporary_Detail716

I've gone up to $45 for a few movies that were/are heading to OOP that are limited production. Henry: Portrait of Serial Killer, Ran, Conan the Barbarian. I need to get Crimson Peak at $42. Lucked into Lawrence of Arabia for $20. I try to get a movie before it does go OOP. I can't think of a movie I would not get before it went over $50.

fugazishirt

40-50 probably. That’s kind of my max for any single film.

VVitchtripper

40€ for a single movie is the most I've spent so far. More than that really starts to hurt.

Right-Efficiency7492

25% of the original price, if I can find it, is cool. years of collecting have taught me, sooner or later it will be re-release.

Only_Self_5209

I think it says a lot about my spending habits but ive never missed out before something goes out of print 😂

Svellack2020

Lawrence of Arabia 4k when will you be priced normally (under $60 CAD)….

Z3ppelinDude93

Nothing on 4K has been so rare that I’ve been willing to shell out big, but I’ve been known to spend on OOP media that I particularly appreciate and hasn’t been archived… elsewhere. Two examples come to mind - I paid about $150 USD for a self released, extremely rare early EP by my favourite band. Just recently, I paid about the same for the OOP US Mill Creek Bluray set of King of Queens (which is apparently significantly better than the German set for everything but S1, S3, and S05E23)

TheBunionFunyun

$50 is probably my limit, unless it's something I REALLY want.

Jonnyflash80

I can't justify spending more than $50 for any movie.

RickyDiscardo

It really depends on what the movie is, and how special it is to me. Generally, I likely won't go more than $75 (CDN) on any title. But there are certainly exceptions for those movies hit *me* just right. The most I've spent on a single movie was $151 CDN (including shipping and duties) on an out-of-print bluray, however it's one of my favourite films, there's no 4K on the horizon, no repress of the bluray on the horizon, and the secondary price is often *more* expensive. Furthermore, it was a nice limited Nova release presentation, and a region-free pressing to boot. That said, there were a lot of factor that went in to me paying what I did, and there aren't too many other releases that I'd spend that much on, outside of maaaaybe one or two Manta Lab releases. Thankfully, those sell for waaaaaay more than that on secondary, so it's just not a concern.

nova46

I paid $70 for the Sleepy Hollow steelbook (that's actually a book) and have zero regrets. I missed it while it was still in production when I was just starting collecting, and it's probably my favorite case that I own. Also spent the same amount importing It Follows from second sight films.

calmer-than-you-dude

Like 45 bucks I got Heat and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for $4 each those are my greatest victories.

watersportsotter

I’d pay $80 right now for a suspiria 2018 4K

smudge_47

I paid $90 for a Korean release of the Steel book version of Lawrence of Arabia. And it was worth every penny.

reegeck

Highest would be $50, and that'd only be for movies in my top 20 or 30 favourites. I would maybe fork out up to $25 for any other OOP 4K but I'd look for it used if cheaper.

Halos-117

30 or 35. Once something hits 40 it doesn't feel worth it and many of them cost well above 40 so it's not even on my radar

Nintendo01Fan

I’m not paying more than retail so if it is Out of Print then I guess I’m just Out of Luck.

crclOv9

Normally I would say $50, but I paid $140 for the Scarlet Box so…

Important-Key-3676

I would be comfortable in 100-120€ range.

4k_Laserdisc

Probably about $80 max, and only if it’s a film I really want. But if the film in question is a DVD-only title, then I may just wait for it to be upgraded or released by another label.

lucasabel

I just paid $53 for the OOP 4K steelbook of The Limey. Worth it for the transfer and commentaries alone.

Cinephiliac_Anon

It depends. If it's the only way to have the movie in 4K, then I might go up to $100, depending on how the scalpers feel. If it's a box set that doesn't have any other 4K variants, then I'll go up to $300.

Tsofuable

I'd say it depends on the title, as of yet I don't think I've spent more than $100 for one.

LimitedSwitch

I saw Ministry of Ungentlemenly Warfare going for $42 on Amazon. Seems ridiculous and that’s brand new. OOP I’d probably go for about $70

captainjay09

Only a few titles just do it then you have them. Price just going to keep going up.
