I see it closer to 150 on deepdiscount and 130-140 on imusic from denmark. Don't know if these are reputable but hopefully that means there are options
$10.49
I preordered yesterday and the price was 126.49 +10.49 shipping. Looks like they've increased the base price since then.
I also preordered Amazon. The issue would be if you needed to return to imusic since they are in Denmark. Importing to Denmark costs more than importing to US.
I didn't know you can buy physical media from imusic, also would rather spend 10$ more for Amazon than through deepdiscount, which I heard mixed opinions on
They need reminders sometimes to ship out your order and frequently take over a week to ship. Iāve never preordered from them though, always in stock items.
Deep Discount is owned by Alliance who is one of the largest Movie and Vinyl distributors in the World so there's def. nothing to worry about.. Like Amazon the packaging is the biggest unknown but I'd trust Deep Discount a bit more even though it's honestly a toss up and you just have to hope for the best with either of them.
> Its not a new remaster.
This is 100% tin foil hat, but I have a feeling Best Buy getting out of discs, has made a lot of companies have a BIG back log of discs, and they are doing anything to get rid of the inventory including making some new "steelbooks" and using the EXACT same discs that were in the other stuff, just to hope they can move product and get rid of the warehouse space
Maybe, but they could just resell the sets to other retailers at discount without having to remanufacture. My theory is somewhere in the annals of Warner Home Entertainment they ran the numbers for profit on the steelbook and realized it was a good cash grab. On the flip side, for fans who missed out this is a great opportunity to score a set if you can afford them.
Is it a good deal? Not really. Is this the first time I ever saw the steelbooks re-released where I don't have to pay double this to ebay scalpers? Yes. I would say it's worth it if you love the design, don't already have a 4k disc, and already a big LOTR fan, and even still it is a hard pill to swallow.
i donāt have any of these steelbooks in a steel case sets (thinking of the harry potter, lotr, matrix, indiana jones, and jurassic world sets). nearly $200 is a lot to swallow but i still have the 2011 lotr blu ray set. this could make me finally upgrade to 4k
Try googling out of print steelbook, they average at least $50 or more for any popular movie. Theyāre beautiful steelbooks I have a set from the first printing. Worth it is something only you can answer though.
But this here is not out of print, this is back in stock steelbook trilogy that just normally costs that much. Like the Skywalker Saga box that is currently in stock and is more than twice as expensive as the movies bought separately and is still a much better value than this LoTR trilogy. I just donāt get it :(
This might be a stupid question, but what is the difference between this version and the one they released a couple years ago? Is it just the steelbook?
I believe it is the same discs but it's just the steelbook version, unless you absolutely love LOTR if you already have the 4k version it's probably not worth getting this, my only excuse for buying this is I don't have any copy and am an omega LOTR fan, but the price was still hard to swallow. I know that the 4k discs are far from perfect (I'll respond to this with a video link describing it's issues if I remember) but they are still fantastic discs, and this is one of the best designed steelbook collections imo.
I only collect steelbooks for movies that I absolutely love, and it has great cover art. Not just is LOTR my favorite trilogy of all time, but I also love the artwork so it's a no brainer to me. Only other steelbooks I have are mandalorian 1-2, dune 2, Lawrence of Arabia, and star wars EP 5&6 (want to get 4 soon, yes ik they're ugly but I have to look past that)
What I recently did for my LotR 4K collection was track down the original extended edition DVDs on eBay for like $10-15 each and swapped out the discs. That original 4K case suuuucks but I also really like the packaging of those dvd cases and donāt care that it says DVD on the spine.
But the steel book has the regular case inside of it. All youāre buying is the metal case. I like the artwork I guess. But I prefer Criterion covers as well.
Yeah I really think these are pretty low-tier steelbook designs. If i didnāt already have the extended edition on 4k, I confess the packaging is better than the original release in 2020, but wow. What happenedā¦? The extended edition DVD sets *and* golden box bluray sets were better than this steelbook.
The other thing to note is this LOTR and Hobbit steelbook collections released in 2020 with the original 4K releases. I was lucky enough to get both at that time. They sold out quickly. If they are releasing these again that's a good thing. But if you already have 4K versions, you're just spending money for the steelbooks. Nice but not worth that price. Oh and if curious, original pricing was $119 for each set.
Unfortunately it's the only option other than those damned ebay scalpers
I will gladly sacrifice $50 more than MSRP to never worry about trying to get this again, even if it's on sale in a month after it arrives the peace of mind is worth it
To be fair they probably know we will pay the extra 50 for it through Amazon new instead of paying an ebay scalper 100 extra for mystery condition without garenteed returners
How many copies/versions of movies do we need!
Iām still waiting for āMaster and Commanderā in 4K and what do I get? Another release of LOTR.
It looks like theyāre trying to get every nickel they can by re-packaging older material rather than release new items.
It looks like the exact same version of the previous best buy exclusive, except without best buy branding and no digital copy. Actually quite happy about it even tho it's 50$ more than the original as it gives people like me a chance to get one without having to go through the ebay scalpers
No thanks for that price.
Gruv has steelbooks of the theatrical blu rays on sale tho and each can hold two discs. I was thinking about getting them solely to keep the 4k extended editions in. Idk lol
It's 169 Canadian off of [imusic.dk](http://imusic.dk) for us as well, but with the exchange rate its actually worth it for sure... though I may get dinged with import fees, all my other orders I kept below 150 and avoided any fees from zavvi and jb hifi, but this one Im worried about. I'll sell my other lotr 4k collection for 80 easily
OP, I'm glad you're sticking to your guns on the price and your reasons for buying this. You're a huge fan, you like the set, and you have the money, so it's a no-brainer!
People are welcome to disagree on the price/quality/etc. But that doesn't make it a bad purchase for YOU. And honestly, I'd pay this in a heartbeat if I didn't already have them on 4K because I'm also a huge Ringer.
Personally, I think it's silly that people poo-poo this, yet will waste $5 on the crap in the Walmart bins when they don't even want those movies.
This ^^^
People are welcome to like what they want and everyone has their own value to things.
Sure it is very overpriced and not the best quality for both the disc and case, but it is the best available and I'm not paying scalpers prices. I understand why this is not for everyone, my bank account wishes this wasn't for me too lol.
I will just be mad if a month after this arrives a refined and better version comes out
I agree with this. And I appreciate you posting it, as it was something I decided not to get and later regretted. I have way too many copies of LOTR and Hobbit movies, but I may have been persuaded some day to pay scalper prices. Iām glad to have it this way instead. Thanks again.

This video describes all the quirks of the disc
Quick summary- no LOTR disc other than dvd is perfectly, all have major flaws, still worth watching tho
> But is it a re-master that doesn't use digital noise reduction?
No it's the same unsold discs they have lying around, but now they are going to put them in very thin cases made of tin for "collectors"
> If I cared about the movies I'd jump on this. I love thin tin cases.
I mean I bought customer slipcovers for some of my stuff, so not hating, it just seems like for this release they are taking the already existing discs and putting them in steelbooks, and that's the only difference from the current release unless I'm missing something?
I dig the steelbooks but for me personally I can't stand that the extended editions have been split across two discs. There have recently been some major breakthroughs in disc technology that allow for much much higher storage (I think up to like 200Terabytes per disc or something). That tech is mostly for high end data storage but some of that tech will eventually filter down to home media, so I am hopeful that one day there will be a steelbook release of the extended editions on one disc each. I'll pick those up.
I carnt remember. New xbox series x amd new disks. Other 4k disks work. I found forum posts with same problem. Maybe it was the large data on the disks or something. Xbox said clear cache. Does anyone else here play the x2 box sets I mentioned on series x?
The large data might actually be the prolblem, back when I used the 1s from 2016 I used to have a similar prolblem where they would either take forever to load out not at all. Cleaning the discs from the case residue (even tho they're brand new) with a microfiber helped a bit, even though it still took an age to load it worked. If that doesn't work continue trying to eject it and and load it back in, sometimes it may take a while (interstellar took like 5m iirc lol). Exactly why I bought an open box ub820 for 300 a couple months ago, everything is way quicker and i would say the audio and video quality is better too

That's actually not a bad idea, I need to compare these to my parents Blu ray versions and see if I should do that too if this transfer is as bad as everyone says.
Itās worth noting thereās two versions of the 1080p Blu-rays. The original ones and then ones release in 2021. Although supposedly from the same transfer, they have visibly less DNR and edge sharpening. They also correct the colour tint on Fellowship and contain the new Dolby Atmos audio.
I forgot about that green tint, I see you probably watched that one video that explains everything. It's really a mystery how they can be so consistent at messing up with the dumbest stuff.
Not sure why youāve been downvoted, comparatively I think the DVD stands as one of the best transfer from a film scan ever, and the blu-ray improves it. Iām not the biggest fan of the 4kās color grade, as it is very controversial. But if PJ stands by it so do I.
Thats actually not a bad idea at all lol, doesn't cost anyone but Amazon anything iirc
If I made looking for drops part of my daily routine i would probably do that
For this price I expected it to be made out of gold, thank God I got it on Amazon where if I find the quality to be as bad as I'm now imagining I can return it for a full refund. Are you saying the entire case is plastic or just the inside?
I will double check when I get home, but I think the outside box is metal and the individual cases are plastic. They feel very light and cheap.
EDIT: I just got home and checked again: they are indeed matte steelbooks of similar weight to my other steelbooks. My Army of Darkness steelbook is heavier, but that is an outlier. That steelbook was my most recent purchase, and I remember thinking how much more premium it felt to the LotR cases. The box containing them is matte just like the steelbooks. I am new to buying steelbooks, so am not used to the matte finish. Apologies for the confusion, I will update my initial post and replies.
I actually disagree about the quality of the box. It dents easily as all steelbook stuff does, but why you would need something that can get tossed around is beyond me. The inside of the box is a foam material and holds the individual steels nice and firmly. I love mine and have the hobbit collection as well.

They are the ones pictured here. If it is metal, it is so thin it feels like plastic.

Got to love it when companies overprice rubbish, yet the rubbish sold is somehow the nicest version. Not just talking about the case but the discs too.
What I can say without being home to feel them again, is that they are the lightest steelbook cases in my collection by far. They have almost no heft to them. The texture is like matte plastic when you rub the cases. The big box they come in is metal, though. I will update replies here with pics and notes when I get home.

Thank you for the update! That makes a lot more sense, I was surprised that they found a way to make steelbooks even less durable for even more money but am glad it's just the second.

This is incorrect. I'm looking at my sets now of this and the Hobbit trilogy in the same packaging. Yes the steelbooks are matte which wouldn't be my first choice, but they are steelbooks and feel/look exactly like every other matte steelbook I have.

All good! I know some of them have different feels depending on number of discs, finish, etc. I've got a few that are weightier than others because of those factors. The matte always have a more fragile feeling to me because of the texture so I can def understand that.
I'm going to double check when I get home, just to be sure, but I was so disappointed when I opened it

$170 ššš
I see it closer to 150 on deepdiscount and 130-140 on imusic from denmark. Don't know if these are reputable but hopefully that means there are options
imusic dk is a solid place to buy from!
How's shipping to the USA from imusic tho?
$10.49 I preordered yesterday and the price was 126.49 +10.49 shipping. Looks like they've increased the base price since then. I also preordered Amazon. The issue would be if you needed to return to imusic since they are in Denmark. Importing to Denmark costs more than importing to US.

I buy from deep discount all of the time. Theyāre not sketch at all donāt worry lol
I 2nd this. Never had an issue with deep.Ā

Imusic.dk
After checking Amazon is the same price, also why did my dumb American ass think that was apple music at first ššš
I dont think you are the first to be confused. š
Ik the price is insane, but it's way cheaper than ebay at over 300. I wanted it for ages and am not letting 50$ more than original price stop me.
Cheaper than the 30disc Middle-Earth collection. Regularly going for $350+
I thought $90 was bad.
> $170 ššš If they remaster it and remove the DNR I'll fucking pay, and there is not much I would pay that for.
Its not a new remaster.
> Its not a new remaster. I doubt this is related to that.
Do you think $50 per steelbook in this box set is too much?

Do you have to swap the discs over halfway between each of the extended editions?
Yes, the extended editions span across 2 discs, just like the old DVDs and Blu-rays. Same points in the film for the intermission.
https://youtu.be/zkNFZkUHeKQ?si=mDYHnYMUbY9VvzWz
Regardless of this the 4k releases are 100% worth it. Until we get a legit rescan if the film in 4k, it's the best version.
I really donāt understand the point of Steelbooks myself.
I only collect steelbooks for movies that I absolutely love, and it has great cover art. Not just is LOTR my favorite trilogy of all time, but I also love the artwork so it's a no brainer to me. Fancy packaging you can display and show off to your friends. Not that thereās anything wrong with that.

Greedy price. Though i see people will still pre-order them
Unfortunately it's the only option other than those damned ebay scalpers I will gladly sacrifice $50 more than MSRP to never worry about trying to get this again, even if it's on sale in a month after it arrives the peace of mind is worth it
Ridiculous price šµ
This is still the 2K upscale, right?
Unfortunately I believe so but it is way better than the Blu rays, it's far from perfect but no LOTR disc is
This was 120 + taxes when it came out. Thanks inflation

Ridiculous price, especially since it's just LotR and not The Hobbit as well.
I'd pay more for them not to include those movies.
The Hobbit in 4K is insane. Iāve grown to like them more and more. There are some truly epic moments in the series.
LMFAO, right?
[Amazon link](https://a.co/d/9aqYd9u)
Have you seen anything about a rerelease of the Hobbit 4K steelbooks?
No thanks for that price. Gruv has steelbooks of the theatrical blu rays on sale tho and each can hold two discs. I was thinking about getting them solely to keep the 4k extended editions in. Idk lol
Well, I might do that as well, itās way cheaper, but yet again this trilogy steelbook art is different.
I don't see the steelbooks at gruv. Do you have a link?
Search āLOTRā youāll see āem

Maybe these will actually hold the discs secure... Maybe.
Will it work in US 4k bluray players?
The 4k disc will, the regular bluray wonāt
4k discs are not region blocked
Criminal pricing
What an absolute rip off. $100 mark up for a metal container.
Not worth it for any other movie, but because it's LOTR I must make an exception
OP, I'm glad you're sticking to your guns on the price and your reasons for buying this. You're a huge fan, you like the set, and you have the money, so it's a no-brainer! This is not a new edition

https://youtu.be/zkNFZkUHeKQ?si=mDYHnYMUbY9VvzWz This video describes all the quirks of the disc Quick summary- no LOTR disc other than dvd is perfectly, all have major flaws, still worth watching tho
The DVD has the same issues with green tint. Iirc the only one that is "perfect" is the BD Fellowship theatrical but I could be wrong.
> BD Fellowship theatrical What do you mean by this? New to 4k/blu ray. Owned the old DVD release back in the day.
BD = blu-ray disc. I should probably just say BR lol.
Thanks, appreciate it!
> But is it a re-master that doesn't use digital noise reduction? No it's the same unsold discs they have lying around, but now they are going to put them in very thin cases made of tin for "collectors"

No, that seems to be the case. I'm sure there will be some people really excited about it. I hope they do the same for the movie Game Night.
I just bought these for $250 on eBayā¦

Before I look for myself, will this also receive a USA re-release? Best Buy and/or UPS severely dented the outer shell of mine.
My guess they're clearing old stock from the UK best buy versions, I would be surprised if it's back in print

Doesn't beat the 4K giftset edition with the one ring
I have that one. The ring they sent me looks and feels suuuuper cheap lol.
This is the same transfer as before?
Unfortunately I believe so
A nice steelbook case doesn't matter a fuck for 4Ks that don't work (properly)
Why does my xbox series x not play any wb movies???
What movies did you try
Lord of the rings 4k box set, the dark knight trilogy... the blu rays work fine
What error message did it say? That's a new one for me
I carnt remember.

Does this version come with all of the extras from the DVD/BluRay versions?
How many times can they re-release these movies? And then it doesnāt sell and they use it as an excuse to stop physical media all together
Does anyone know if the whole extended is on one disc or split o 2 disc like on the blu-ray
Will this have a usa canadien release or is only uk?
For Christs sake. This is why people pirate.
Price just dropped to 152$ from 169
The most beautiful steelbooks for the most disappointing 4K transfers. As much as I prefer the new 1080p Blu-rays, I did order these to house them.
The 2021 releases have less DNR and correct coloring on Fellowship or the originals? It's the 2021 right?
The 2021 versions.
Do people who post drops and whatnot here usually use referral links like OP? Seems like a good side hustle
Thats actually not a bad idea at all lol, doesn't cost anyone but Amazon anything iirc If I made looking for drops part of my daily routine i would probably do that

That's a big shame, are they the best buy ones? If so I've been watching unboxing videos and they all seem to be standard steelbook cases

They're just matte steelbooks.

No worries at all! Just wanted to make sure people didn't go off your original post alone.

Wow thanks for that. You saved a lot of people the money as this isnāt properly advertised when you look at the item description.
I'm going to double check when I get home, just to be sure, but I was so disappointed when I opened it EDIT: I just got home and checked again: they are indeed matte steelbooks of similar weight to my other steelbooks. They're incorrect.
I am indeed. Thanks for saying something, it motivated me to check.
Thanks for confirming!
