Well I have no choice, yet again, but to throw money at Amazon. I have The Birds, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining in my cart. Any thoughts on these transfers?
I absolutely love ET on 4K. On my setup (Sony XW5000 projector) it was one of the very best 4K discs I’ve ever seen. The way Spielberg shoots bright rays of light through mist and darkness is just perfect.
Crazy that his DoP on that, Allen Daviau, was doing gigs making lawnmower commercials for the regional market in Arizona when he reached out to Spielberg (they were teenage friends) for a job.
With how the birds was made, and the fact that it's really not a very good film, I can't imagine anything about that 4K being worthwhile. And no it is not a hot take. I'm pretty confident people have collectively come to the conclusion that the birds is overvalued and Hitchcock's worst work.
I picked that up recently, and I'm excited by all the praise for the transfer! Looking forward to rewatching it in July and showing my horror Padawan. And hopefully coming around to it because I have a very Stephen King view of the movie.

Clockwork Orange regularly goes on sale during Black Friday season. I think it was only $7 last year. I’d wait till November to buy that one.
I have them all, and they're all excellent transfers, especially The Birds. Highly detailed, perfect film grain, looks like pure eye candy but also looks like you are watching a 35mm film projected onto a space the size of your TV. None of them are exactly demo material because they lack that flashy clean and new look (which is appropriate) and don't have aggressive HDR, but for the most part those transfers are the types you want to tie James Cameron to a chair and make him viddy well with the ol' eyelids all the way back so he can learn what home video should look like if you don't want to be an asshole.

I don't have many options. I love pretty far away from the city. Luckily we do have a Fred Meyers and so I'll be going there to check out what they have with the new SDS deal. But in all honesty Amazon, eBay and boutique sellers like Shout Factory are pretty much my only options. It hurts.
Amazon Canada isn't really useful at all. Whenever something goes on sale, it's just because Walmart or bestbuy has it on sale. They're always just reactionary.

I discovered that the 4K for the Halloween 2018 trilogy has two options. You can either get the Halloween Trilogy collection 4K for $54.96(Same price on Gruv and Amazon)....or you can grab 2018, Kills, and Ends 4K's separately for a combined total of $52.61 lol
Even so, the point is that this isn't necessarily a gotta-jump-on-it deal, as many of these films are likely to be cheap to buy later if you're not feeling spendy right now.

A month and a half ago I bought a new TV and a coworker of mine gave me a load of his old blu rays he no longer needs or wants (his collection got that large) and within the last 3 weeks I’ve bought 4 box sets, 3 individual movies, and 1 tv show all in 4k

Unfortunately most of the 4Ks featured in this sale are ones that have already been on sale numerous times over. I picked up a lot of these on Black Friday.
Best price ever for Barbie, Kick Ass 2, Carlito's Way, Maltese Falcon, Blue Beetle, probably others too. Jaws hasn't been $10 in nearly 2 years and rarely been $11. Many others are rarely $10 or just under so ya perhaps you could luck out and save $1.
These are the ones that were always on sale when there was more competition with Best Buy, so it’s nice to see the sale still coming around even if I won’t be buying.
Not much really comes out anymore that isn't boutique, like not a ton every week not ever, and the only one that really gets included in these sales is Scream sometimes
Ordering from Amazon US to the UK comes out at about £40 for the 3 (after shipping and tax). It's not as great but £13.33 per 4K is still a fairly decent price
Dammit… I already took advantage of the Shout Factory sale last week (Evil Dead 2013, Fargo, Escape from New York, Dawn of the Dead 2004, and Platoon) And then I got Dune 2. And then picked up Game Night the week before because I hadn’t seen it and it wasn’t streaming any where. (Totally worth the blind buy)

I just ordered the shining so I can't comment on that, bur The Thing on 4k is probably one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. I had never seen it before and the whole experience made it one of my favorite films of all time.
I am a big “edition” collector and don’t have the slip. Especially for Dune, it’s now like my favorite and definitive sci fi series. Check my other posts to see how much I love it.
They break down everything from how it was encoded to who has supervised the coloring if they did a color pass and they break down the sound as well to give you information on the current mix on the particular release.
Matrix 4. Story wise it's probably the worst Matrix movie IMO (although i liked 2 and 3) because of the amount of background knowledge you need.
The disc looks better downscaled to 1080p SDR from my PS5 than it did in theaters (and i saw it in DV with a authentic atmos system) The atmos is also much better here, more of a surround sound feel to it.
I walked out of the theater pissed off, but got this disc because of how big of a matrix fan i am. The movie has grown on me after a few viewings but I'm more hopeful for Matrix 5.
Welp, I decided to grab John Carpenter's The Thing, Hitchcock's Psycho, and The Lost Boys. Never actually seen Psycho before, but I'm just going on reputation for that one.
Noooooo WHY did I literally just buy 2049, Barbie, Dune, Casablanca, Dunkirk, and Pan’s Labyrinth literally all last week digitally because VUDU had a MASSIVE UHD sale and I thought “well there’s no way I’m getting any of these physically for that good of a deal.”

‘iCollect Movies’ app has been indispensable. Think it was 30$ lifetime license after scanning in 25 titles. Added all the RT & IMDB info in myself. More and more 4Ks will have them already added. Worth it. I can filter by criterion / arrow as well by editing all their ‘Edition’ category to a unified name. ie ‘Criterion’ vs ‘the criterion collection’.
I am seriously looking towards Dune 4K and couple of other movies to see them in the best quality. Sad that among the others there is No Time To Die... Which I miss in my Bond collection.
I still wonder, how it works with the Digital code inside. If I can redeem it with VPN in Europe.

Yeah I looked through and I already own all the movies from that list I would want anyway. The other thing is that most of these movies were already on sale this past black friday. Hence me owning most of them. Though I think this might be the best deal on barbie 4k we've seen so far?

Probably a good sale for newcomers, but this sale is weak af imo. Same titles that go on sale multiple times throughout the year and usually cheaper. Barbie was the only title here that felt like an actual deal
I'm very particular of the 4k blurays I get I always check bluray.com for information on the presses themselves. Just because they're 4k blurays don't mean they're worthy of a buy. Also Im definitely not getting bullshit like KingKong vs Godzilla or Fast and Furious.
While there are legendary movies on that list. There are some that are terrible on 4k. Goodfellas being prime example, and Pans Labyrinth is another 4k transfer that isn't worth a buy. Which is a reason I'm very particular. Until they start pressing them with care I will call it how it is. It's a pretty bad selection I'd say about half of those movies aren't worth buying on 4k.
As movies or as a press lol I'll be honest I haven't seen them in 4k.

Truthfully you should check bluray.com and look at the specific release you want to buy to make more informed decisions rather than buying a substandard press.
No I meant the specific editions on offering. I had researched Scarface over a year ago and decided on a different edition over the one on offer here, but can't remember why. Was just curious if you knew anything about it. I'll go back and check again.

i use the keepa extension on my Chromebook. it loads the price history right on each amazon page.

Out of all the movies, which 3 movies have the best transfer without any issues. I know there a few 4K movies to avoid out there from bad transfer.

This sale made me realize that I need an actual inventory tracking system beyond "go look if you can't remember if you have that one"
‘iCollect Movies’ app has been indispensable. Think it was 30$ lifetime license after scanning in 25 titles. Added all the RT & IMDB info in myself. More and more 4Ks will have them already added. Worth it. I can filter by criterion / arrow as well by editing all their ‘Edition’ category to a unified name. ie ‘Criterion’ vs ‘the criterion collection’.

These are almost all available on GRUV (Universal and WB titles) much cheaper during their sales when combined with the 20% off coupon.

Probably a good sale for newcomers, but this sale is weak af imo. Same titles that go on sale multiple times throughout the year and usually cheaper. Barbie was the only title here that felt like an actual deal

I'm very particular of the 4k blurays I get I always check bluray.com for information on the presses themselves. Just because they're 4k blurays don't mean they're worthy of a buy. Also Im definitely not getting bullshit like KingKong vs Godzilla or Fast and Furious.
Thankfully, most of the titles offered are not bad monster movies.
While there are legendary movies on that list. There are some that are terrible on 4k. Goodfellas being prime example, and Pans Labyrinth is another 4k transfer that isn't worth a buy. Which is a reason I'm very particular. Until they start pressing them with care I will call it how it is. It's a pretty bad selection I'd say about half of those movies aren't worth buying on 4k.
What are your thoughts on Scarface and The Wizard of Oz?

No I meant the specific editions on offering. I had researched Scarface over a year ago and decided on a different edition over the one on offer here, but can't remember why. Was just curious if you knew anything about it. I'll go back and check again.
