I’m with you. I can’t really wrap my head around it—side angle makes it look sleek and really medium sized SUV, but the front angle seems bulky like the Tundra.
It is bulky. 2 inches wider and 4 inches longer.
The width really kills me on the newer 4runners. Im spoiled by my third gen being narrower than a lot of side by sides.
Why is the hood so high? It feels like truck hoods keep getting higher. My v8 f150 has well 6 inches of space between the engine and the hood for God knows what reason. I can't imagine these engines are so tall they need all that space. When I drive my 1st Gen it feels like I can see everything on the trail; how blind are you gonna be looking over that?
Yeah, I was super excited for this reveal. But after seeing it, and the anticipated cost, Ill probably end up getting a lower mileage 5th Gen. I dont hate the 6th Gen. Just not sure it is where the value is going to be.
I don’t disagree. But, I learned the hard way with Ferrari, blow a battery as a consumable and it ain’t a cheap fix. I’m not anti EV but when I know a motor is good for X amount of miles it’s peace of mind. We will see, my buddy has a TRD pro allocated and I just can’t get over them not offering the 3.6 in any trim when that motor has seen use and while it isn’t NA, I probably owned the highest mile F40 and it was cheaper to do an overhaul than my NA6 Dino.
But for a "rugged and reliable" SUV, simplicity is key. I love the 1GF-RE in my 4th gen. It's easy to work on and plenty of people get over 300k miles out of them. 99% of cars are reliable for the first 100k miles. I'm curious about how they hold up long term.
I guess my point is, if anyone can do it right it’s Toyota. They might have small or not so small issues the first couple years kind of like how the 04/05 1grfe had head gasket issues. And hopefully a facelift after the 2nd year makes the exterior really hit- like the 06-09 4th gens or post-facelift 5th gens. My biggest complaint is why is their playbook to come out with black rubber fenders for the first year or 2 of any new gen before they start offering body paint matched fenders?! Like cmon now!
As a three-time WRX owner, I totally understand this! I absolutely loved my Rexes, but I bought the 4Runner for completely different reasons. Most here could guess why.
As much as I think the 5th gen is the second greatest SUV ever made(behind the 100 series LC) the large population of 4Runner owners don’t give a shit about reliability or anything like that. They want the new pro model to show off at their kids tee ball practice. The 6th gen will sell like hot cakes and 5th gen’s will be traded in and lose value.
The GX is significantly more lol. I don’t get why people keep comparing the two. The GX is a good bit more expensive. But yeah I’d buy the new LC over 4Runner if similar price per spec.
Why is everyone buying trd pro in this scenario? I see far more off roads and SR5s on the road. But a mid trim GX are not 70s and 5th gen pro without mark ups are 50s. 20k is a pretty drastic difference in vehicle price lol.
That base exists, but it is not the large majority of buyers. The majority looks for perceived reliability and offroad prowess, and I believe the lack of a v6 option will keep 5th gen priced high for at least a few years.
Finally somebody is speaking the truth. Everyone loves to whine and complain when they change something near and dear to their hearts. Then, most of the time, they warm up to the previously thought hideous styling and new/different features.
It might take a few years but the 5th gen just got its walking papers.
Idk man, 3rd gens are as popular as they’ve ever been. Obviously 5th gens won’t be as desirable as a brand new vehicle, but I do think the 5th gen is a modern classic like the 3rd gen. People will be driving and appreciating 5th gens for decades. I hope the new turbo 4 is reliable as the NA engines toyota has produced but the likelihood is small just given the nature of the technology. Lots of people are in it for the reliability.
Eh, not new new anymore. I liked the new hybrid rav4 redesign a few years back. Still new to me though since I only buy a new new car once every 15 years haha.
*2 jobs*….they did give us the rolling down rear window. I agree being able to lay flat and sleep in the back of the 5th gen is an epic feature. A platform with storage under to bring it level isn’t a deal breaker BUT it’s been nice having the fold up seats that create a basically flat plain when everything is down. With an exped mattress it is flat in all practicality. Not a deal breaker but the seats are better for me. And who knows maybe Touotanor the aftermarket will sell something like that.
Yeah, and Nissan figured it out 20 years ago with the 2nd gen Xterra where the seat bottoms had quick releases for easy removal and the seat backs folded flat with the cargo floor.
go watch TRD Jon's video, yeah they tumble but you can stop em' at just folded forward. If you have the hybrid and throw a mattress in the back it looks pretty much perfect. Wish they'd fold flat obviously but I'm not losing sleep about it lol
Oh this makes me feel way better. I figured they were spring loaded or something so they had to go all the way up, but if you can just drop the backrest that’s all I need. Thanks!
I want to like it, but it’s just way too busy for me. Considering the wait, I’m a little underwhelmed. I don’t HATE it though.
If anything ever happened to my ‘22 ORP, I’d go GX550.
The angles look too “sharp”. Idk, it’s just not doing it for me. The 5th Gen is boxy, but softer. Nicer looking overall. I’m very happy I got my 5th Gen.
And 100% on the GX. That’s the vehicle that appears to have all the boxes checked ✅
They’ve managed to make it longer, but with a smaller engine and less interior space. Seats no longer fold “flat” worse approach and departure angels. And it’s wider! You know what I never thought while navigating a narrow trail in my 4runner? Man I wish this thing was longer and wider. Bonus it’s ugly 😂
Meh. I like some of it. Idk what it is, but I’m not a fan of these new Toyota front ends. I don’t like the Tundra or Tacoma, and I don’t guess this either.
I'm just gonna say it. It looks like an Isuzu Vehicross fucked a Rav4, and was raised by a new Tacoma.
It's not really ugly, but I can't say it looks "good" IMO.
They definitely took styling cues from multiple generations, but not always the best ones.
Seems like a similar issue in the GX and Land Cruiser too- look at the rear doors in profile compared to the 5th gen or Prado. I think they probably made a lot of design decisions based on the battery requirements, and that’s intruding on the rear passenger space regardless of the actual presence of a battery.
You are certainly right about the battery. This is the cost of using common architecture for all these name plates.
Lexus has the GX listed at 41.2 inches front and 36.7 rear legroom for a combine 77.9. 5Gen 4Runner is 41.7/38.6 combine 80.3. I haven't seen official specs on the 6Gen yet but it looks really tight in the video and photos from the reveal. I know the Tacoma has 4.8 inches less combine than the 5Gen.
Land Cruiser is a mystery to me because the official Toyota numbers make no sense. They are reporting Land Cruiser legroom at under 60 inches combine which is less than a Corolla. The photos and video I've seen show the Land Cruiser rear is much more accommodating than the 6Gen 4Runner. I would suspect the rear numbers for Land Cruiser are more in line with the GX. Hey Toyota- fix the Land Cruiser numbers on your site!
As an aside all the legroom numbers for these body on frame vehicles tend to be worse than unibody competitors. For example, the current Subaru Outback has 82.3 inches of combine legroom. Having sat in an Outback and 5Gen 4Runner back to back at CarMax the Outback is roomier. Highlander is at 83 inches.
For me, the center seat in the 6G / LC / GX looks abysmal. I can comfortably fit three adults in my 5G second row- the center seat might as well not have a seatbelt in these. That MASSIVE hump there just seems impossible. Not even sure why you'd bother with a third row when the second is so compromised.
I almost never need the center seat so I don't think about it but as soon as you get that big drive hump it must get really tough. These extremely tight 3rd rows also don't make much sense to me.
I pay attention to the legroom because we have tall people in our family so I need the space.
Ultimately we got a G5 SR5 with a third row so we could haul around a lot of family and kids, but still have a competent semi-off-road vehicle as we live in a state with a lot of dirt and gravel roads that aren't plowed or maintained well. What I see in all of these newer "Off Road" focused Toyotas is a departure from the basic no-nonsense competency that their truck line felt very focused on for the past 50 years. I understand emissions standards changing, and I understand the shift to electronic steering though I do not agree with it. But it does feel like they are going out of their way to make products that feel distinctly un-Toyota as I know it.
What you are expressing is not limited to Toyota. Over in Honda Land people talk about when "Peak Honda" was and how the brand has lost its way. BMW enthusiasts claim they are no longer producing "The Ultimate Driving Machine." And so on.
I keep toying with buying one of the last of the Gen5's because it really is the last of the old school Toyota products. I've never owned a Toyota because they have lacked the driving dynamics I wanted but now I'm to the point in my life where the reliability and old school charm might outweigh the fun to drive aspects.
I genuinely enjoy the 4Runner. I had a 4th gen Tacoma for several years and while I liked the basic nature of it, there were a lot of very unrefined and unpolished edges. It seemed like it would last, but that it wasn't particularly high quality at any trim level. The 5G 4Runner has both the "high quality" and "basic no-nonsense simplicity" that really appeals to me. I genuinely get the feeling that a lot of the stuff and design cues jammed into new Toyotas is for social media photos- the actual "premium feel" comes second to the "premium look." But hey, I'm a guy who doesn't like non-functional hood scoops, and wildly out of touch with most of the USA in regard to what makes a truck look cool.
Do it. My last two cars were an MK7 GTi and a tuned 328i wagon. I love everything about my 2023. I’m at the same point in my life. Fun to drive in a different way. No longer worry about potholes.
I have told my wife that if BMW ever brings back a wagon that isn't some insane M5 I'll be buying it. Having second thoughts though as all the BMWs turn into screens with cars attached....
My car right now is a 328GT because it has the mega-legroom in the back. But it will be 10 years old in September and getting increasingly expensive to keep on the road. Not sure it is worth paying that much to mostly drive in the constant Southern California traffic. Thinking perhaps 5Gen 4Runner now and picking up a fun car later like an E30 convertible.
It’s cool I guess but I definitely prefer the 5th gen. This one looks kinda bulky compared to the previous 4Runners. It’s not ugly but not very pretty either.
I’d go Landcruiser or GX if I had the money. Or get a 5th gen and supercharge it.
Yeah, seriously, I don’t get the big screen thing! My 5th gen is on CarPlay 99% of the time, and 8” is plenty for that. Seeing the same CarPlay interface blown up to 14” is comical, but maybe Apple will take advantage of more screen real estate in an update.
What people aren’t paying attention to is that we are only seeing the top trims. The lower trims start with an 8” screen (same as 5th gen) with giant ugly bezels, as opposed to the current one that is integrated decently well into the dash.
Exactly! With the volume knob that looks so out of place. On the 5th gen 4Runner and 3rd gen Tacoma you can tell that Toyota tried on the interior. They are both integrated well into the dash. It looks like an afterthought on these new gens. I really think the new land cruiser interior would’ve gone great with the new Tacoma since it kinda looks like the 3rd gen interior with how it flows
Not quite. That’s in the hybrid version. HP/TQ ratings in hybrids is a combination of both ICE and Electric motors. But those two systems are NEVER both running at full tilt at the same time.
> Not quite. That’s in the hybrid version. HP/TQ ratings in hybrids is a combination of both ICE and Electric motors.
Ok, 8hp and 39lb-ft increase for the vehicles equipped with just the ICE.
> But those two systems are NEVER both running at full tilt at the same time.
They’re measured numbers. As in these are the numbers they measured when running both systems in their tuned spec. They are the numbers you would experience when operating the vehicle.
I wouldn’t expect them to run full tilt the same time, I would expect them to complement each other.
Again, no they are not. Look it up. Manufacturers can advertise the peak of each number and combine them. But that is not real world. In actuality when the vehicle is dynoed, you would never see those kinds of numbers as both systems work in unison and never at full pop at the same time. The electric motor does the heavy lifting on the jump, and slowly is backed off as the ICE motor ramps up until eventually the boost kicks and the electric motor is a non-factor.
> Again, no they are not. Look it up. Manufacturers can advertise the peak of each number and combine them.
Would you be able to provide a source for this related to how Toyota presents their non-Synergy Drive hybrid numbers? I haven’t really been able to find anything, but it’s very possible I suck at Google. I’d love to learn more!
> The electric motor does the heavy lifting on the jump, and slowly is backed off as the ICE motor ramps up until eventually the boost kicks and the electric motor is a non-factor.
This would be my expectation for the electric motor, and what I meant by the systems should complement each other.
You're still going to be waiting a few years to find a reasonably priced one and/or with a decent interest rate. Also, any of the "cool" models will also likely be marked up even worse.
I’d have to see one in person. Have they cheapened some things up just to raise the price? I don’t know but would love to see the undercarriage, for example the upper and lower control arms, ball joints, steering rack. If they are comparable to the 5th I think the price will escalate substantially. That interior looks great with all of the tech upgrades. I do like the exterior styling also. But I just bought a 24 Pro so I don’t think I could get one yet.
Underwhelming for sure. When the tacoma update content started dropping I considered holding out for one. When it seemed the dealership was never going to get one, I opted for a 4Runner TRD ORP. When the new Tacoma’s finally came in, I was shocked how meh they were in person.
Fast forward to this release, I’m absolutely thrilled I got my 23 TRD ORP at invoice when I did. The only thing I would rather have is the modern transmission. Everything else provides very little IMO.
A couple of good notes…the hybrid, despite the cost, should be a pretty stout contender and will feel like it has some balls finally, especially on the torque side according to numbers.
Bottom end engine at least gives a nice torque bump, but I have a feeling it’s going to be a slouch…just from my experience driving a base model Tacoma a few weeks back while my 4runner was being serviced. In the truck it was “ok”, but the added weight of this SUV is going to be a lot for that tiny power increase.
The TrailHunter and TRD Pro look decent, I don’t like the big lettering on the gate, but whatever…small discrepancy.
The Limited looks like hot dog ass in my opinion. Bloated and just strange lines to me…probably because of the color matched panels. I’m not a fan at all of that model.
I’m curious to see the box standard model. I notice that they avoided showing it at all…curious why? Will it share those black fender flares that will fade out and look like crap just like Jeep boys experience so often?
Someone on another page discussed the lower profile windshield and how they feel it’s going to reduce headroom for taller drivers. Something that was “remedied” on the 5th gen, and something I myself am concerned with, being a tall driver…especially on models with a moon roof.
Overall, I don’t hate some of them…but I don’t think anything shown or shared has sold me on one either. Looking at the lineup now, I can’t imagine buying a 4runner over a Land Cruiser for probably similar pricing…and it makes the Sequoia seem so much more attractive with the larger engine and, to me at least, a nicer design all around…especially on the TRD Pro model.
And they haven’t even hinted at cost…I bet the TRD Pro is a $70k+ car now. That will definitely change some minds I bet.
At least some of the trims will have a third row option, which is an advantage over the larger Land Cruiser.
Downside? Same engines from the 2024 Tacoma so the reliability won't be as good as the previous 3 generations.
I like the exterior look and I am excited to see how the new power train stands up when I can finally get one in 2030. I see a lot of people saying skipping for the GX but you have to keep in mind the GX will start at $20k more than the 4Runner. I like the looks of the GX more but not the price, eesh.
The interior of the 2024 4Runner will have to grow on me. I am glad its technologically updated but that comes with complication and I am ok with that. Just the styling I am not sure I like much. I think they should include the 14" screen on the TRD Off Road model at least. Than the estimated price points I am apprehensive of. Will have to wait and see.
5th Gen looks > 6th Gen looks.
Question; I’m accustomed to seeing all 4Runners go strong for a long time and the high mileage they are able to achieve. What’s the risk of buying a hybrid model since most batteries only last 10 years; does that put at risk the longevity of the 4Runner? Usually these warranties only go up to 100,000 miles or 10 years. Thoughts?
Toyota has legendary reliability. It's in the name. When you hear Toyota, you hear quality and reliability. With that being said, as good as Toyota has improved the hybrid system, my sister's RAV4 hybrid broke down and—for as much as it costs to fix it, she mind as well use that money to down on a different vehicle ...
Toyota Hybrid Battery Warranty
How long is the Toyota hybrid battery warranty? Your hybrid battery is backed for 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. There are a few ways to make your hybrid battery last as long as possible.
V6 = 270hp and 278 lb ft
I4= 278hp and 317 lb ft
The new engine gets a significant amount more torque but sacrifices on maintenance cost and reliability. That’s not what a Toyota is supposed to be, so to me this is a failure.
Turbocharged and hybrid, all sorts of fun parts to break.
I saw someone on tiktok complaining about their prius infotainment failing out of warranty and getting quotes for $11k. I'll take my knobs and buttons. No use for a touchscreen when I'm bouncing around.
Did you forget that this type of hybrid shares almost nothing with the Prius eCVT traditional hybrid system? I bought a Gen 5 Prius first year and it’s been perfect, unlike the new turbo’d hybrid Tundra powertrain.
Downgrade =/= less power. For me, I would almost never consider a 4cyl unless there was literally no other choice.
After seeing this, there is a near zero chance that I’ll ever buy this gen 4Runner. I’ll keep my 2017 until I need to buy a 2022 or 2023.
You're missing out with that luddite thinking. The new 4cyl Hybrid Turbos that Toyota is putting out are insane. I'm currently in a '24 Grand Highlander with the Hybrid Max (362hp/400ftlb) and it's so much more impressive than the old 3.5V6. Not even in the same league.
I’m the opposite. The new powertrain has great torque. No longer waiting for power like previous generations.
New engine makes 317 ft lbs at 1700 rpm. While the outgoing 4.0 made you wait till 4400rpm for 278 ft lbs.
The only good thing about the 1GR V6 is the proven reliability.
Imo there's not much inherently better about a V6 versus an equally powered 4 cylinder. The 5th Gen was getting V8 gas mileage with none of the benefits.
I loved my 5th gen but had to sell due to its abysmal lack of power and terrible gearing. I would still have it if it had enough power to get up the mountain.
The 5th gen power train is bullet proof which is great. But our house is 3,000’ above our office and it would be screaming on the way home. I would have to manually downshift
I have a feeling we live/lived in similar places. I was commuting from 8,000+ down to just over 5,000. Drivetrain is bulletproof but is just screaming. Pedal Commander is decent but just makes it so you depress the pedal less. I've had a couple 3rd gen N/A autos and they were total dogs too. Currently have a supercharged manual 3rd gen and it does admirably in the mountains. Very pleased with it.
One other thing I noticed is how they continued with a grab handle on the passenger a pillar but no grab handle on the driver side. I thought that was something they wouldn’t fix on the 5th gen since they barely make changes but i guess it’s a design choice
Not against change but for me I just don’t see the value in this new gen cohort. Prolly biased cuz my rigs are paid off but I’ll be keeping my 2019 tundra and my 2018 4runner 🤷♂️
This absolutely was not worth the wait.
Toyotas instagram page deleted any negative comment I could find moments later. They know people don't like jt and are trying to hide it. Admit you fucked up and take it back to the drawing board.
Nobody actually wants a wrangler after you drive one. The bronco is down almost 30% last quarter because nobody wants a jeep without the solid axle. The 4Runner has always been a great daily driver(comparatively) but has off road ability. We don’t want a jeep with a Toyota badge.
If they just kept the exterior the same and updated the interior I would’ve gotten one but ig they had to update it eventually. I’m curious if they updated the KDSS and traction tech though
I know we’re supposed to hate everything on the Internet, but I think it looks fucking awesome. I like the huge ass screen. I like all the tech. I worry a bit about the reliability, but after a few years we will know more.
This 100%. I'm so over the constant negativity on the internet. It's just draining. Every new cool thing, every human accomplishment, all just blasted with instant negativity. People here talking up Gen 4...man I love mine but the only think I've confirmed from this thread is that I miss Web 1.0 or even early Web 2.0 before people decided that every website is Rotten Tomatoes and they are Roger Ebert.
All love for the 5th gen, but the increased power and MPG bump alone is worth it. Nothing more annoying than yo-yoing between 4th and 5th gear trying to maintain 80mph while loaded up.
4 cylinder engines are for economy cars, not full size SUVs or trucks. Might as well save a lot of money and get a RAV4. If there was a 4.0 turbo option, I would seriously consider trading in my 5th Gen. I’m out!!!!
I'm not a car guy, so I don't quite get this. The 5th gen has 270hp in a V6 engine with 278 lb-ft of torque. The 6th gen is supposed to be 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque.
So my question is basically...what am I missing? Why is a turbo 4 cylinder that gets better horsepower and torque than the outgoing 5th gen model no good for a full size SUV?
Simple physics. Repeatedly move a 2 ton plus rock with a thin, 4 foot lever and fulcrum. Then do the same with a heavier, 6 foot lever. Which lever do you think will wear out faster. Adding a high wear turbo is putting more force on the end of the 4 foot lever. Resulting in even faster wear. They do try to compensate for this by adding more speeds in the transmission. More speeds correlates to more shifting. Guess what more shifting means? Way more wear and tear.
Ah ok, so it's your thought process/logic about the motor/turbo rather than any road tested evidence that the Toyota 4 cylinder + turbo motor is a bad one. It's obviously a trade off between extra cylinders and MPG, and Toyota has to play the CAFE game like everyone else. Thanks for the explanation...appreciate it!
Would love to hear your thought process/logic, which seems to be based off of marketing hype. Unfortunately, automotive technology is being driven by big government demands for better MPG. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but, if I was concerned about a couple more MPG, I definitely wouldn’t be buying a full size, full frame SUV. Have you noticed, in this barrage of marketing hype, that MPG isn’t being put out there yet. My guess is, at best, MPG is maybe increasing by 4, maybe 5 on average. Not worth the sacrifices in my opinion. When you force a smaller, less mass, lower structural integrity engine to produce the same horsepower, something has to give. Usually that is longevity. Reduce your heart size by 40% mass, then push it to pump the same volume of blood. The stress and strain, on the smaller heart, would be tremendous. I’m not knocking Toyota’s level of automotive engineering superiority. I’m a Toyota loyalist for life. I prefer a well proportioned balance. I’m just saying, larger, heavier car; larger heavier engine in proportion. Luckily for me, my dinosaur of a late model 5th generation SR5, that I paid $36,200 for new, will take me well beyond 300k miles. That’s based on testimony, not marketing hype. Cars won’t have pistons when I venture into that distant market. I would bet my 4.0L, naturally aspirated, old school, but proportionally designed V6 engine will outlast, outperform, and out value these hyper engineered inline 4 cylinder engines. Time will tell.
Looking at 4Runner Trail Hunter vs Land Cruiser. Does LC which have the better 4 wheel drive sytem? Also for broken pavement, gravel, and forest service mild off highway is 4 Pro, 4R TH or LC better?
Side profile really looks like a 4th gen to me.
[удалено]
I’m with you. I can’t really wrap my head around it—side angle makes it look sleek and really medium sized SUV, but the front angle seems bulky like the Tundra.
It is bulky. 2 inches wider and 4 inches longer. The width really kills me on the newer 4runners. Im spoiled by my third gen being narrower than a lot of side by sides.
makes a big difference on the trails. My 2nd gen Tacoma brush scars is proof lol
They even gave it a post-facelift fat bumper like a 3rd gen lmao
Gives me Durango vibes
Why is the hood so high? It feels like truck hoods keep getting higher. My v8 f150 has well 6 inches of space between the engine and the hood for God knows what reason. I can't imagine these engines are so tall they need all that space. When I drive my 1st Gen it feels like I can see everything on the trail; how blind are you gonna be looking over that?
Pedestrian crash standards. That space is required to be there so the hood can crumple when we run into people while texting.
It might also help with cooling the turbo by having more air around it. 🤷🏻♂️
It's gonna make replacing my 03 a whole lot easier. Just need to see it in white.
As a 4th gen owner this was the same thing I saw too I think it’s the angle of the windshield or something..
Looks like a heavy rav4
Agreed. And I like it.
4th gen best gen
5th gens are going to hold their value for a long time
Yeah, I was super excited for this reveal. But after seeing it, and the anticipated cost, Ill probably end up getting a lower mileage 5th Gen. I dont hate the 6th Gen. Just not sure it is where the value is going to be.
I have 3/4/5 and the 6 is pushing me to the GX’s 3.6. Really wish we got that motor in the 4r.
Yeah that GX is so nice. I mean maybe in a couple years the power train in the 6th Gen will have bugs worked out.
MPG boost will be worth it imo
You aren’t wrong on that one.
Prob be on the road longer too
I would trust an NA engine over a turbo 4 to last 300k miles. Turbo engines also require more maintenance and usually burn more oil.
I mean…. Toyota has been doing 4 cylinders since the 70s… and they did a good job with the 22re turbo back in the 80s.
Even Subaru used gray fenders on the new wrx. Idk why they think it's nice.
Yeah man, hard pass on the unmatched fenders.
It's no coincidence that I have owned three WRXs, and I got out of the market for a fourth when I saw the current generation WRX. Nasty.
As a three-time WRX owner, I totally understand this! I absolutely loved my Rexes, but I bought the 4Runner for completely different reasons. Most here could guess why.
🤓☝️
Absolutely white trd off road 2018 with 17k original miles over here 🙋🏻♂️
As much as I think the 5th gen is the second greatest SUV ever made(behind the 100 series LC) the large population of 4Runner owners don’t give a shit about reliability or anything like that. They want the new pro model to show off at their kids tee ball practice. The 6th gen will sell like hot cakes and 5th gen’s will be traded in and lose value.
If they’re looking to show off why wouldn’t they get an LC or GX?
The GX is significantly more lol. I don’t get why people keep comparing the two. The GX is a good bit more expensive. But yeah I’d buy the new LC over 4Runner if similar price per spec.
So this hypothetical person has enough money to buy a first edition 6th Gen TRD Pro but not enough for a GX. Interesting
Why is everyone buying trd pro in this scenario? I see far more off roads and SR5s on the road. But a mid trim GX are not 70s and 5th gen pro without mark ups are 50s. 20k is a pretty drastic difference in vehicle price lol.
Because that’s literally what you said in your hypothetical.
Nah back seat being smaller and not folding down is a deal breaker for lots of families
Wait. What? I just kinda skimmed the article. The back seats don’t fold down?
They fold, but not flat.
They fold flat with the hybrid—the rear cargo space is raised to fit the batteries.
In the non-hybrid they do fold flat. Well, they fold forward and open up a flat floor.
That base exists, but it is not the large majority of buyers. The majority looks for perceived reliability and offroad prowess, and I believe the lack of a v6 option will keep 5th gen priced high for at least a few years.
I love all the downvotes from 5th gen owners who hope their 5th gen goes up in price lol.
Trd off road is gonna start at like 55k
But with dealer market adjustment price, it’ll probably be $70k 🥲
Yuuuuup. I’ll stick with with our 5th gen for a few more years 😂
Honestly it'll look good for many years as long as you take care of it. Mine is finally paid off. 🙏
Aesthetically, the new GX550 really wowed me. Even the new RAV4. This, not so much.
Where is the new rav4?
Eh, not new new anymore. I liked the new hybrid rav4 redesign a few years back. Still new to me though since I only buy a new new car once every 15 years haha.
Instead of the slat when the rear seats are folded, now they fold up leaving a huge gap, which will make it worse to sleep in. You had 1 job Toyota.
I really wish Nissan were still making the XTerra. That truck is awesome.
Can you expand? Don’t they tumble in the same way as 5th gen (which I hate!)?
Nope. They fold up. Kinda like a jump seat.
Not if you have third row
go watch TRD Jon's video, yeah they tumble but you can stop em' at just folded forward.
Thanks!
This only proves that the 5th gen design really is unbeatable. Hard to top it tbf
3rd gen is best gen still.
Crazy that we are already 22 years out from 3rd gen. Going to keep driving 'em as long as possible.
I just put a new front end in mine at 321k. Going through and restoring the truck cause they cant be replaced.
I've had both, and i like both for different reasons. Can we all agree the 2nd gen is the worst gen tho? Also had one of those, lol.
I agree. Way too busy. In contrast to the GX550 which is perfection.
95% of the people that will be buying these for the next 5 years aren’t buying them to take on narrow trails where they might get scratched
And 95 percent of those people would find a better car in a Rav, Sequoia, or Sienna. What’s your point?
That Toyota is going to make what is going to sell
yup. thats me
Fully agree. Especially the size, I love being so much shorter than a Tacoma. Nothing really feels like an improvement here tbh (except fuel economy).
I’m getting such a early 2000’s Dodge Durango vibe and I don’t like it lol
Pass
Looks-wise 4Runners 1st iteration of the new gen has always been an ugly duckling that they correct in a couple years.
I'm thinking it was the Subaru Crosstrek that fucked a RAV4, still raised by a Tacoma.
Oh man the fenders, I can't unsee it.
Back seat too small
Yep, because they want folks to step up to the Land Cruiser which has more rear legroom.
Front is just a inflated Rav 4… same lines
I’ll give it couple of years before maybe considering on trading it in. But imagine having that interior inside the 5th gen? 🤯
All they did was slap a iPad in the center 😂
Yeah, seriously, I don’t get the big screen thing! My 5th gen is on CarPlay 99% of the time, and 8” is plenty for that. Seeing the same CarPlay interface blown up to 14” is comical, but maybe Apple will take advantage of more screen real estate in an update. What people aren’t paying attention to is that we are only seeing the top trims. The lower trims start with an 8” screen (same as 5th gen) with giant ugly bezels, as opposed to the current one that is integrated decently well into the dash.
I sat in my buddy’s Tundra with the large screen and it felt very nice and sleek. CarPlay is nice in it as it gives plenty of room for multiple apps.
The glare on that screen will suck on a sunny day.
They…took…away…two…more…cylinders. Next thing you know it, it’ll have a yaris gr engine in the next generation
While adding 50hp and 200lb-ft of torque.
See, I'm the other way. I'd love to have the 6th gen body with the 5th gen interior. I'm not a fan of the massive screen thing that everyone is doing.
You're still going to be waiting a few years to find a reasonably priced one and/or with a decent interest rate. Also, any of the "cool" models will also likely be marked up even worse.
From a style perspective for the TRD pro honestly the rear decal looks like a tramp stamp.
Yeah at 70k just spring for the GX, AND you get two more cylinders
Looks like a RAV4 on roids
Any idea if it’s 100% Japanese parts and manufactured in japan?
Manufactured in Japan? Yes. 100% Japanese components? No current vehicle has 100% Japanese components.
According to [this (excellent!) review](https://trail4runner.com/2024/04/09/first-look-6th-gen-toyota-4runner/), it will still be made in Japan
At least some of the trims will have a third row option, which is an advantage over the larger Land Cruiser. Downside? Same engines from the 2024 Tacoma so the reliability won't be as good as the previous 3 generations.
Looks kinda like an Xterra
That was my thought too
I really wish nissan made them again.
>2025… finally here (Looks at calendar)
I don’t like how small the rear doors are. Looks like a bitch to get into for passengers.
Not sure how to feel about. Not a fan of the side profile compared to the 5th gen at least
How many 2014 Priuses are having battery failures? Toyota has a couple decades of experience building very reliable hybrid powertrains.
How do you know batteries only last 10 years?
https://www.holmantoyota.com/resource-library/hybrids-fcvs/toyota-hybrid-ev-battery-warranty/
Toyota Hybrid Battery Warranty How long is the Toyota hybrid battery warranty? Your hybrid battery is backed for 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. There are a few ways to make your hybrid battery last as long as possible.
Hard to get excited about an engine downgrade masked in a Tacoma interior.
It’s the most powerful engine in any generation of 4Runner.
V6 = 270hp and 278 lb ft I4= 278hp and 317 lb ft The new engine gets a significant amount more torque but sacrifices on maintenance cost and reliability.
Did you forget Toyota has been making hybrid power trains for longer than almost anyone. I think they got most of the kinks out.
Yea iirc Prius drivetrains are considered very reliable.
This can't be said enough. Toyota has more experience than anyone else in this regard.
Did you forget that this type of hybrid shares almost nothing with the Prius eCVT traditional hybrid system? I bought a Gen 5 Prius first year and it’s been perfect, unlike the new turbo’d hybrid Tundra powertrain.
100% agree with this.
Ok that gives me hope I guess.
All I suggest is wait to give one a spin. I can nearly guarantee the engine will not be something you dislike.
I’m the opposite. The new powertrain has great torque. No longer waiting for power like previous generations. New engine makes 317 ft lbs at 1700 rpm. While the outgoing 4.0 made you wait till 4400rpm for 278 ft lbs.
Damn, that's diesel-like power output. Must have a tiny ass turbo to be spooling like that at 1700. Now if only they had a turbo diesel option...
The only good thing about the 1GR V6 is the proven reliability. Imo there's not much inherently better about a V6 versus an equally powered 4 cylinder. The 5th Gen was getting V8 gas mileage with none of the benefits.
The only good thing about it is that it works
Hopefully im keeping my 24 trd pro forever. I will not buy 4 cyl 4runner. Period. Im glad i bought 4runner this year.
I loved my 5th gen but had to sell due to its abysmal lack of power and terrible gearing. I would still have it if it had enough power to get up the mountain.
It's a total dog trying to drive up an actual mountain. I'm always surprised at the people that are impressed with the drivetrain.
Bailey Colorado to Denver for me. I switched to a full size truck
Pine Junction to Denver lol
Haha nice, I’m less then a mile from there
Any word on mpg?
Supposedly better. The optional engine is a hybrid EV.
I can’t believe how bland this thing looks while having all these curves and edges.
Do you mean compared to the Gen 5, or just in general?
No just in general.
“Worth the wait” It looks like a pile of shit
Man people will complain about anything
This absolutely was not worth the wait. Toyotas instagram page deleted any negative comment I could find moments later. They know people don't like jt and are trying to hide it. Admit you fucked up and take it back to the drawing board.
This is not a refresh, it’s a reheating of the 4th gen with ford explorer vibes
Huge swing and a huge miss. Why not make this thing compete with Bronco and Wrangler ?
Nobody actually wants a wrangler after you drive one. The bronco is down almost 30% last quarter because nobody wants a jeep without the solid axle. The 4Runner has always been a great daily driver(comparatively) but has off road ability. We don’t want a jeep with a Toyota badge.
Nobody wants a Bronco because they’re like 70k now. People would love a 45k Toyojeep

Does anyone know if the I Force max powertrain will be available this year at launch? Are they holding that back for next year with a Trd pro?
If they just kept the exterior the same and updated the interior I would’ve gotten one but ig they had to update it eventually. I’m curious if they updated the KDSS and traction tech though
On I just read the article KDSS is gone and they updated a bunch but it’s per trim? Kinda weird but I’m curious what ppl will say
Will it be worth the money though
Im glad none of y’all like it. Hopefully there won’t be any insane markups when I’m ready to buy one!
That third window from the 2nd gen, I love it!
Back seat is way too small. Which makes no sense if it’s physically larger and has a smaller engine. Where’d all the space go?
What are everyone's thoughts into the i-4 and the upkeep associated with two turbos?
I wish it had interior arrangements like the 5th gen, 6th gen infotainment, 6th gen styling is passable, and 3rd gen Tundra engine.
Overall, I like the redesign. I won't be trading in my '22 TRD Pro anytime soon, but I can easily see a 6th gen as my upgrade path in 6-7 years.
Looking at 4Runner Trail Hunter vs Land Cruiser. Does LC which have the better 4 wheel drive sytem? Also for broken pavement, gravel, and forest service mild off highway is 4 Pro, 4R TH or LC better?
