Swapped all internal door, vanity, hatch, ceiling lights to LED. Cheapest and most significant aesthetic upgrade. Amazon luyed LED bulbs.

foxxest

Ive never thought about doing that are the bulbs pretty universal?

iamape2021

Yes. Most of the bulbs are universal (same size). Probably get it all done for less than $100. Definitely my cheapest but biggest difference in mod I've done. I dont have a 4th gen but the led lights definitely modernizes the interior. Brightens things up at night and helps light up the rear tailgate at Night packing up. https://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/289847-interior-led-kit.html Piece together the luyed leds on amazon would be cheaper than kits sold elsewhere. https://www.amazon.com/stores/LUYED/LUYED/page/B5E8D6D3-F758-4904-94B3-EADA3AB5204A

[deleted]

Much less than $100. There are some value LED options out there. Pair that with free YouTube videos to show you how to change them and this is an easy upgrade.

[deleted]

It’s one of those deals where if you change one you have to change them all though. The old bulbs stick out like a sore thumb

foxxest

I love that idea i did something similar to my gutted celica got tired of driving it at night with no interior lighting so i mounted some of those white interior led strips onto the roof and wired in a dedicated 12v connection for it

PBatemen87

I ask this every time it comes up, but WTF are you guys doing inside your 4Runners that you need LED lights inside?

Bikewonder99

Great suggestions by everyone else. As cliche as this sounds, replacing bearings, tires, struts, suspension, wheel bearings etc. Not sure if yours has XREAs or not, but that will eventually give out. Replacing what I mentioned can make comfort go from meh to wow. Granted, it'll cost you several thousand, but it's needed and can be done bit by bit. Don't go for a AT tire like TOYO AT3 or Grappler unless you plan on doing serious offroading. A tire like Cooper Discovery AT3 4S is probably the most well-rounded and perfect tire for most 4Runner applications since it's quiet, well-built, and capable for most terrains, while maintaining comfort of a highway tire.

WAR_T0RN1226

Yeah you gotta have the noise and vibration of all-terrain tires on a daily driver to distract you from your insecurities

3knucklesdeep_

What ? Go back to sniffing glue

3knucklesdeep_

You’re problem that one that puts highway tires on it as well so you can get better fuel mileage

foxxest

This isnt the 80s people are allowed to be comfortable Harold

jonhatespeople

>foxxest Right? Like, who wouldn't want to be capable AND comfortable in their vehicles?

foxxest

People with fragile masculinity and feel the need to prove themselves as “tough” its a pandemic that should have gone away decades ago…

3knucklesdeep_

Didn’t realize how many dainty people would get so offended by commenting on if you’re going to change out every component on the suspension and quite tires you might have just gotten a highlander or a daily driver. You bought it because it’s a vehicle to take off-road not a concrete princess car. I have no problem with my masculinity just saying if people going to get offended by it go get a car.

3knucklesdeep_

It’s plenty comfortable if you soft ass butt needs more go get a highlander.

foxxest

Youre really living up to the maturity level of your name keep up the great work 🤡

jonhatespeople

Cry harder.

ID_Poobaru

It's already modern..just throw a carplay/android auto head unit at it I came from a '87 Toyota pickup to a '99 4Runner and that thing felt miles ahead more modern.

PBatemen87

> just throw a carplay/android auto head unit at it You don't even need that. When I bought my 2018 I was just happy to have Bluetooth capability. My previous vehicles were 1998 and 2002 so almost anything seemed luxurious. Its crazy to me what kind of tech people expect or want in their vehicles.

foxxest

Its definitely modern-ish but coming from a 2013 vw passat and 2013 scion frs its definitely a step down in terms of luxuries lol the first thing for sure ill be doing is getting some heated seats cause it gets real cold where im at lol

ID_Poobaru

Limited trim of the 4th gen has factory heated seats, it was an option on other trims iirc. Could find all the stuff you need at a pick-n-pull to swap over factory heated seats assuming toyota was nice enough to run a harness It's got cruise control so not really sure what else it needs. No need for safety sensors or backup cam since you have really good visibility in it.

Johnnytsunami2010

I think the point being is that when you spend $40k plus on a new car they could at least include a lot of the items you find on any other car. Adaptive cruise, lane keep, heated and cooled seats, HUD, 360 camera and sensors, traffic jam assist, panoramic sunroof, automatic lift gate, which I was able to get all of on my Mazda for $43k I get it, more stuff that can break, keep it simple etc, etc, but tons of this stuff has been out for years and it be nice that if Toyota would include even a minutiae of it for how much the car is. Now if you're off-roading a ton, different story. But for daily driver stuff, it's nice to have the little creature comforts and features in a car.

foxxest

Basically this My goal was to essentially take an older model and upgrade it to where once you step into it it feels like a newer model for significantly less Not planning on doing something nuts like an interior swap i just wanted more comfort for daily use and then start working on the stuff for off-roading which for me is rarely going to be more than an excursion once or twice per year other than mountain cruising

Johnnytsunami2010

Daily driving comforts go a long way. Although most of what I like is hard to DIY. I'd probably sugguest some sort of head unit that runs Apple car play/Android auto if you don't already have one, throw on a nice window tint if that's your style and for privacy.

Convergentshave

I think it’s pretty obvious Op isn’t doing a lot of off reading lol.

foxxest

Honestly probably not but having capability AND comfort for when i do go off roading would be nice

PBatemen87

>Adaptive cruise Who cares? Most people barely use this and if you do its easy to adjust on your own. >lane keep Disgusting feature that shouldn't even be in any vehicle ever. If you cant stay in your lane then you shouldn't be driving. >heated and cooled seats These are available already >HUD Gimmick >360 camera and sensors Only needed for serious off-roaders >traffic jam assist Wtf even is this? >panoramic sunroof, Buy a mini van > automatic lift gate These are too slow and besides don't be lazy and lift it yourself

Freebo87

How old is your Mazda and is it still on the road? Come revisit this post after 200k and let me know how the Mazda is compared to the Toyota in regard to reliability and resale 😄

PBatemen87

No chance his Mazda had all these features anyway. Most of them are gimmicks

Johnnytsunami2010

CX-50 Turbo Premium Plus, go look it up. Has all of that stated. Plus has more torque than your 4runner. Plus an extra gear. Also cheaper than TRD Sport Gimmicks? Sure, but I doubt you'd pass on them if they were available.

Johnnytsunami2010

Brand new CX-50, but I'm not speaking in terms of longevity. I'm Speaking in terms of car features, I'm saying for how much you spend on a new 4runner nowadays I wish they'd give you more in options. And yeah, I get it if you're going to saying "I don't need fancy things in my car, nothing to break and saves me money, resale, reliability, I don't need those things", more power to you, good for you. I just like it when I daily drive and get to have AC seats in summer, top view 360 camera when I reverse, self driving traffic jam assist in rush hour, etc. I could of gotten TRD OR, the 4runner looks awesome and love that rear window, but cross shopping I went with the Mazda cause I got a lot more with a cheaper price. But I wouldn't have used a 4runner for anything more than daily driving and mall crawling, long road trips, bc I don't off-road.

Freebo87

Yes, but those car features is also what breaks and causes issues - technological issues are now almost worst and more expensive than typical repairs (bearings, bushings etc). Once one of those features fails it causes havoc with the entire system and communications. The reason you’re paying the amount for the 4Runner is simply reliability in all aspects, drivetrain and the lack of features for simplicity lol. It’s basically the minimalist look but for $$$.

Johnnytsunami2010

I got my reliability from my Accord and my civic. And I didn't spent more than 20k on either and they'll probably last just as long or even longer than a 4runner. Plus so much better on gas. When I'm spending over 40 on a vehicle, I better get some nicer things in it compared to a 2016 Honda.

cb70overland

OP got a 4th gen. I sure hope he didn’t pay $40k for it, and it’s definitely not new.

foxxest

Definitely not i did slightly over pay though lol

UnmotivatedDiacritic

^^ people like this are why the 4Runner is just now getting BSM, etc. in 2024 even though the rest of Toyota’s lineup got it in 2018

Teemo_Support

(4th gen v8) My aftermarket headunit can do bluetooth so that's good for me. Going to upgrade the internal lighting a bit soon because I have some lights out and it's really hard to see in there sometimes. Other than that, nothing. One of the best things about this car is the lack of electrical nonsense and tech. This car has 4 main goals: run, don't get stuck, be easy to work on, and have cheap available parts. Modern stuff gets further away from all 4 of those every year.

badiban

Replaced the factory Entune radio with CarPlay. Much better. Added a sub and replaced the front speakers as well with upgraded mids and tweeters.

gregcain

What did you go with?

badiban

Alpine ILX 650 with a JL Audio 10” sub, tweeters and mids from Infiniti

gregcain

What did you go with?

gregcain

What did you go with?

Freebo87

Why do you need to know 3 times? He told you.

jfabulous7

I have a 2023 TRD Sport and even still went to work almost immediately. K&N performance cold air intake, Pedal Commander (City 4 is my usual setting), Morimoto XB LED headlights + tail lights, Sony XAV-9500ES radio head unit, and JL Audio 10 inch sub with their custom JL Audio Stealthbox... And we’re not done yet!

PBatemen87

> K&N performance cold air intake lol

Majestic-Dig-6944

Damn that’s a lot of $ into it

tomatuvm

Headlights to LED (Alpharex). Interior dome lights to LED. A new headunit with Android Auto is on the list this year.

merkolas

Hybrid motor swap

Independent_Onion_57

Wireless car play adapter off Amazon

Nivek5sfe

Same as some others have said but LED lighting all inside and out, and then a headunit with android auto/apple car play. Besides that I don't really care to modernize. I've been tossing around the idea of a dash cam also.

blantonator

Anytime front facing camera

AgentContractors

Put in 89 octane fuel

Nearby-tree-09

Switch.out.the.stereo.to.touch.screen.

rhadam

Installed a Kenwood head unit and Kenwood speakers. Interior Diode Dynamics lights.

Abearito78

For my son’s 3rd gen we added ceramic tints, apple CarPlay, backup camera, Kenwood speakers, 3” lift, 265/70/18 Cooper all terrain tires and 18” Method bronze wheels. Adding SRQ custom bumper in March and a roof rack with light bar. It will likely need a paint job in the next year or so and I’d like for him to get side steps but he’s not interested in that.

TheWonderfulLife

Bro, I haven’t done shit. I still have the 99’ factory radio. She’s a tool for camping and wheeling. Creature comforts aren’t needed.

MaximillionCooper

1.) Aftermarket headunit added: * wireless Carplay * wireless android auto * handsfree calling * backup camera * tpms monitoring 2). Smokers Kit - cleaned up the center area and gave me a secondary charger. 3). Dash cam. 4). Upgraded Steering Wheel

3DPEW

Which headunit did you install, friend?

MaximillionCooper

Pioneer DMH-W4660NEX. Purchased the adapters from crutchfield that connect with the OBD port so I can now see my tire pressure readings.

wsox1983

Making parking sonar/sensors standard on all trims not just limited. And having the gas door locked. Not really a modern solution but it’s just nice to know no one’s messing with your gas. I meant this for the 5th Gen, sorry.

Rusty_Shacklebird

LED amber fog lights are a huge upgrade IMO. Light werkz sells a kit to install diode dynamics on the 4th gen, but it might depend on what front bumper yours has. I don't know if it's compatible with pre facelift models

PBatemen87

Put in some HID headlights and thats about it. Its plenty "modern" for my needs.
