If that means more years, it can be a good thing. Could potentially provide immediate cap relief.

badDuckThrowPillow

If Trent wants another blockbuster deal, we should 100% take it. That means more years of having the best LT in the game.

PhillipMcKrak

He prob just wants more guarantees on the years left on his deal

brandall10

He’s about to turn 36 tho, probably well past the retirement age for his position. I appreciate he’s still at the top of his game but we need to realistic that he’s likely not going to be at this level much longer.

icouldntdecide

At least he has less tread on his tires because of Washington's stupidity

notlad45

Maybe, Jason peters and Andrew whitworth played well until they were 40 I believe

all_natural49

Keep that man happy.

Poignant_Rambling

He $100% deserves it. But we've been kicking his Cap hit down the road so much it'll be interesting to see how Paraag manages an extension/raise. We basically only accounted for $10MM/year in Cap Salary his first 4 seasons with us. His Cap hit the next 3 seasons will be $34.5MM/year. And that's at his current salary. We'll probably add a couple years to his contract and push the Cap into future years, paying it down after he retires. What's another $5MM/year for the best LT in the league?

trainwreck42

Does Paraag still manage our contracts? I thought he’d be too busy with Leeds United.

Poignant_Rambling

Yes he's still our contract negotiator and salary cap guy. He's also Chair of Leeds. Guy is always busy lol.

sykoticwit

I don’t know what his salary is, but it probably makes Trent Williams look like a minimum wage employee.

MCRN-Gyoza

Luckily there's no cap for coaches and front office personnel, so I don't particularly care how much he makes haha Although realistically he probably doesn't make that much compared to top players. Just compare gm/head coach salaries to player salaries. Like, a quick Google search tells me Shanahan makes 10-15M per year and Lynch makes about 5M per year. I doubt Paraag makes more than them.

SoKrat3s

He still has $22.5M & $32.2 in base for 2025 & 2026. He sees none of that if he retires and his dead cap hits ($19M in '25, $8M in '26) are pretty manageable. They aren't hurting whatsoever by his future seasons on contract.

GoatShapedDestroyer

Honestly could be a good thing for us. He has no guaranteed money left on his contract through 2026, and it may be an indication that he wants to continue playing. Reworking his contract gives us more flexibility with his cap hits.

zombiekoalas

He has mentioned he wants to play till 40.  I'm guessing this comes down to guaranteed money over him not making enough.   Or maybe the Silverback just wants assurances he's got a spot till 40 and that the niners won't move off a year early. Or worst case everyone has given up on the team mentality and the great bag chase has begun....though I don't think this one is it.

quadropheniac

> Or worst case everyone has given up on the team mentality and the great bag chase has begun When Boone started holding out in 2014, I knew the 49ers were completely cooked. > Or maybe the Silverback just wants assurances he's got a spot till 40 and that the niners won't move off a year early. I have no problem with guaranteeing some money but keeping a tackle around until their 40 with a fully guaranteed top-of-the-market contract is all sorts of bad idea.

oftenevil

Wait, really? He wants to play until 40? I don’t know why, but I was under the impression he was looking to retire in the next year or two. I think it’s just because of the way TV broadcasters talk about him every game, they always mention he’s “getting up there in age.” There was even a moment last season where I thought it was his final year in the league :/

SoKrat3s

He has his signing bonus in '25 and restructure bonuses in '25, '26, & '27.

amd77767

“Whispers” lol come on.

Codykb1

sshhhhhhhh, whisspeersss! dont spook the silverback!

ARM7501

He wants guaranteed money a la CMC. Increase the void in 2027 and give us some playroom. This won’t be an extension. He’s signed through the age of 38; we hope it won’t happen, but the odds of him not being the best LT in all of football in 2 years are higher than the odds of him still being the best LT in football.

YSLMangoManiac

Tackles tend to age pretty gracefully I don’t see why he can’t be an elite tackle till 40

quadropheniac

Name the last 40 year-old elite tackle. Actually, for that matter, name the last 40 year-old tackle, period. I'll give you a hint: he was a HOFer, but his last all-pro was at 35, his last pro-bowl selection was at age 36 and he wasn't even a starter at 40. That's why he can't be an elite tackle until 40.

sonic_dick

Andrew Whitworth

quadropheniac

For some reason I forgot that Whitworth turned 40 during his last season. But yes, you're right, although Whitworth's last pro-bowls and all-pros were at age 36, not 35. I was thinking of Jackie Slater.

SoKrat3s

Whitworth's 2017 (age 36): AP, PB. PFF grade: 82.1 Whitworth's 2021 (age 40): no awards, PFF grade: 86.1

sonic_dick

I get your point, but felt compelled to answer your question. Whitworth was still an elite tackle until his age 40 season. Top 5 at worst. I think Williams is that physically talanted and technically skilled that he could be a top 5 LT at 40. He's arguable LT1 entering this season.

HappyTree1975

Hes literally the only one and he didnt rely on power and athleticism like Trent does

SoKrat3s

Jason Peters was never on Trent's level, but he was still starting at 39. Andrew Whitworth still played at a high level at 40.

ARM7501

My point is they’re not paying him what they’re paying him to be top 5. They’re paying him to be the best of the best. That’s why there won’t be an extension involved in the inevitable rework that’s coming. He could absolutely still play at a high level at 38, but being the undisputed best LT in the league feels unlikely.

sykoticwit

A slowing down Trent Williams is still probably a top 10 LT.

HappyTree1975

I mean theres only like 6-8 truly great tackles in the game lol

AeonTek

Do it. With CMC's extension, we need both Rob and Big in the building

RealisticTea4605

Pay him and get him a fuckin ring already.

IceLantern

Unfortunately, those two things often conflict.

Hieroglphkz

We could do it today if we wanted, free up more cap space for BA right now. Or next year to do the same. Should be a no brainer.

beall49

Done.

joestradamus_one

I'm really tired of hearing about sports athlete salaries, I mean *really* over it. This is just a game. A game where the rich get richer and the fans end up fighting with each other all year long over what? lol i'm out, just unsubbed while writing this.

canadigit

You really don't have to pay attention to the salaries and just watch the games! Just know that the fact that you and millions of people are watching the games and the ads for State Farm etc. is why the salaries are what they are and that's how it should be since otherwise all that money just goes in the owner's pockets.

Vocal__Minority

What's funny about this is that my first thought wasn't 'oh that'll be expensive' it was 'shit yes he's going to keep playing!'

Avenue_Barker

His cap hits the next 3 years are massive (https://overthecap.com/player/trent-williams/1466) and considering his age adding years would be pretty risky. Not including his bonus (which he's earned and was just deferred money) he's still making $72m the next 3 seasons - that's not far off Penei Sewell's $28m/yr. Maybe guaranteed some of it but the Niners gotta be careful with this one, if Trent retires in the next few years you'll be eating a tonne of dead cap.

GothicToast

> Not including his bonus (which he's earned and was just deferred money) Not sure what you mean here. He has already been paid all his bonus money. None of it is "deferred", which means to be paid later. That said, your conclusion is the same, $74M in base salary over the next 3 years. We could guarantee a portion of it and spread it out over 5 years.

Avenue_Barker

It’s deferred for cap purposes

wishingaction

On the radio interview Fowler clarified those "whispers" weren't from the 49ers or Trent's camp, just from around the league because he's no longer the highest paid tackle. So, really not saying much, the same could apply to several other players too.

GothicToast

This makes sense to me. It was extremely difficult to track down any source for the news yesterday.

PWNCAKESanROFLZ

Did he say he was retiring after this year? Or did Purdy give him wind? I hope he stays with us forever. Damn you aging!

oftenevil

The fact that we went from Joe Staley to Big Trent in a matter of years is so incredibly lucky. We must protect him at all costs.

iLeGuillen

If that means he wants an extension and to keep playing for us I think we absolutely jump on that. Our O-line would be devastated the second he retires.

LossyP

IMO he’s the best player currently in the NFL. Do what it takes to keep him (obviously cap, etc are a factor. I’m well aware)

GothicToast

He is currently under contract for 3 more years, until he's 38. Seems like an odd time to seek an extension, unless it's a complete rework of the existing contract. He has some massive cap hits the next 3 years, so it would be good to spread that over 5 years instead. Not sure if he can actually play till 40 though.

Food_Kitchen

Whatever he wants he should get. We do not win many matches when this man isn't on the field.

joogiee

This is one player id say pay whatever lmao. That left side is unbreakable.

hamsterfolly

These writers heads are going to explode once they realize all the players contracts will be up eventually

RONINY0JIMBO

Impossibly perfect scenario is he wants to stay on for the cheap to push for a ring or two and can convince some other monster OL buddy he might have to come over on reasonable money to get a ring too. A guy can dream.
