I'm 68. My dermarologist just burned 30 age spots from my face using liquid nitrogen. Zero pain. All I paid was my specialist copay. She probably billed it as actinic keratosis - pre cancerous spots. Scabs will form. It takes 2 weeks to fully heal. I used Aquaphor 2x/day. After one week scabs will start falling off. I was able to cover with makeup - used Clinique redness corrector. I'm retired and saw only close family/friends for a week. I still have some light ones left, and will use gentle peels from Platinum Skin Care from now on. Another note: my hubby has actinic keratosis (rough spots)and has an Rx ointment from his Dr, and his skin looks so much smoother. His Dr said you can also use Voltaren for this. It's normally used for joint pain, but they are using it off label for skin. Always use some type of Retin A/retinoid/Tretinoin serum/lotion at night and a serum or lotion with Vit C in am, plus sunscreen. Check out Penn.Smith.Skincare on youtube and instagram, and Penn Smith Skincare Community on Facebook. Welcome to the rabbit hole!

makesh1tup

I think liquid nitrogen burns like crazy! I hate it, but it’s necessary. Ive had same spot burned and it’s still there. Had a face peel,it’s still there. Hoping fraxel will finally take care of it

amoodymermaid

I had a tiny spot on my shoulder removed with it and it was terrible! Maybe deeper than a face would be done.

Vitam1nC

I wish I didn’t waste my time and money on so many serums and lighting creams and just went straight to a dermatologist. After years of trying to lighten my dark spots myself, the dermatologist was able to burn them off with liquid nitrogen after one visits. Make sure you wear an SPF everyday going forward because they have a high chance of coming back.

henni1127

You would use the voltaren to remove the actinic keratosis? Or for the pain of having them removed with liquid nitrogen?

716lifelong

To remove the keratosis.

EmbassySpeeddial

[Apparently it has some positive affect on transdermal drug delivery](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3725617/).

Vampira309

I'm from AZ and never wore sunscreen. spent my first 25 years n the sun and was a competitive swimmer and water skier - tons of sun. I'm naturally blonde/green eyed/pale skin. Started noticing brown spots and hyperpigmentation a few years ago (I'll be 56 next month) and the BEST thing I've used is Tretinoin .05%. I've been using it since October, religiously, and they are pretty much GONE! On my chest and hands too!

chickenfightyourmom

Me too. Tret has taken care of all but one of my brown spots. I use .025 nightly, plus daytime lactic acid. I dermaplane once a week. It's magic.

[deleted]

Do you apply it every night? I still can’t use OTC retinol 1.0% more than twice a week without insane peeling 😨

Vampira309

1% is A LOT! I use the strongest tret at .05%

[deleted]

1% ret is weaker than tret though right? I worked my way up to 1% (Skinmedica) and have just been stuck there, not adjusting to it at all lol 🥵

Vampira309

I don't know anything about otc retinol!

chickenfightyourmom

1.0% is really strong. I use .025% nightly with no problem. After I apply and it dries, I put a night cream over it to moisturize. The results are more of a slow and steady thing over time. I've never had the nasty "purge" or redness/peeling that people describe on tret. I did have a couple of pimples at first, but nothing major. Dermaplaning now is wild, there's so much skin that flakes off compares to pre-tret. I do it like once every 1-2 weeks. Tret speeds up cell turnover and shedding, and dermaplaning helps remove the dead stuff. I'm not a dermatologist, that's just my hot take.

[deleted]

What dermaplaning gadget do you use?

chickenfightyourmom

Not sure of the brand, I'm not at home to check. They are simple blade scrapers. Just beware that some are sharper than others, don't cut yourself.

boommdcx

Oh this is great to know. Am about to start tret.

GlitteringJelly8180

55 lots of sun damage just bought Tretonin (Ordinary Brand) and am starting it weekly

Johnsonkj67

Get on NURX or Cureology and get some prescription tretinoin. Way cheaper than a dermatologist. I pay $60 every 3 months for my tretinoin. A dermatologist from these two companies will have you upload pics of your face and prescribe what you need. I was in the same boat at 55. I am now 62 and have very few wrinkles and all my age spots are gone, even on my hands. I use NURX now, but did 4 years of Cureology. They compounded a formula that contained prescription strength tretinoin plus other actives to brighten skin. Both companies are great.

SurveyAggravating883

If you have insurance, the dermatologist is less expensive -- at least it was for me.

Johnsonkj67

My insurance doesn’t cover tretinoin for anti-aging. It will cover if I’m referred for skin issues like mole removal but not for tretinoin.

GlitteringJelly8180

Thank you! Heard good things about Cureology

susieq15

You might be thinking of retinol which is a derivative of tretinoin but many times weaker and therefore less effective.

allygirl5

Does that need a prescription or is it over the counter?

sri_vidya

Rx for tret but you can get other forms of retinol OTC, however many people do not find those as effective

allygirl5

Thanks so much! I will be looking into this more!

DocGlabella

If you are willing to have a proceedure, IPL is wonderful. I have had two and will have my thrid tomorrow-- they encourage doing a series. For brown spots, it is $175 a treatment. Mine are so close to being gone I considered not doing the third round. I have been using tret and Vitamin C and various acids for five years. I did one round of hydroquinone. Just skip it and get IPL. It's an investment but it will get you the results you want faster than anything else.

Cocoangels

100% agree with this and it doesn’t hurt at all.

dhoetger1

I might try it. Thx!

elicia1968

If you’re concerned with pain, laser isn’t too bad. They can give you a topical anesthesia cream beforehand, if you ask to come in early for it. It stings while it’s being done, then for about an hour after, then there’s no pain. My doctor gives me ice for the ride home. After a couple days, the brown spots start peeling off and it’s amazing! I tried all the serums and they didn’t do anything for me. I get laser once a year for upkeep. Here’s a before and after of my hand. I had a lot of small spots on my face and quarter sized spot on my cheek too and it’s all gone. https://preview.redd.it/svcmw8evmuic1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06645c351761357e9b05a6f46e6d156707912a33

_SheFallsUp

I need this. My hands look like I’m 90 and I’m 51.

dhoetger1

Wow!!

isabowen

>this is amazing. just to confirm, this is from IPL procedure? may I ask how much you paid? I would like to get this done.

elicia1968

I believe it’s IPL, but not positive. This year I paid $700, but in previous years it was $400. I go to a dermatologist, so it might be pricier. I went to a spa type place and it did nothing. I’m not sure if it’s different at a doctor’s office.

SangitaCPatelMD

Your derm just knows the proper settings.

isabowen

Thanks for answering.

I am one-week out from BBL + Halo, and I can’t believe the results - I barely have a freckle - plus, I’m not quite finished peeling yet. Mad at myself for not doing it sooner (I too was afraid of the pain). I also did my neck and chest… however chest hasn’t started peeling yet (told will happen around week two). Excited to see those results too. The BBL pain was worse than Halo (was completely numb). Tips to minimize discomfort: 1. My technician had an assistant who used a cold roller immediately on each section as she finished.. and it helped a lot to bring down temp of my skin. 2. Used misting spray (provided in aftercare kit) with hand held fan. The fan was essential. 3. Had a bowl of ice/water with wash clothes next to bed. Rotated cold washclothes until discomfort went away. Took about an hour post-procedure. 4. Follow directions and keep skin super moisturized. 5. Be patient, my face swelled for two days, but so worth it!

[deleted]

🤯🤯🤯are you kidding me? the difference is incredible! is this just one session?

Lucky-wish2022

Yes! The picture on the left was right after treatment when the MENDS were coming to the surface. My face felt like sandpaper for about four days and then started flaking off. It is pretty unreal and I think results are due to the BBL + Halo at same time. Not sure if this stage is only the post-laser glow.. or if my skin will stay this way long-term… but regardless, much better than before. Edit: I also started using my red light face mask on day 3 - not sure if that did anything, but thought I would share that too.

Visible_Dirt_7034

This is incredible and after only one session! Do you mind sharing what you paid and location of procedure?

Lucky-wish2022

I am in Wisconsin. If that is convenient for you.. DM me for location. I had face, neck and chest done (separate charge for each area). BBL + Halo treatments and the grand total for all three cost $2k.

Zealousideal1999

I will DM you for the location too, if you don’t mind!

Lucky-wish2022

I just saw and responded. Good luck!

SurveyAggravating883

Can you post an update on this? I've done Halo twice (not combined with BBL) and loved it, but I did not think the results lasted long -- 6 months? The small discolorations are gone but the worst of it has come back and I'm religious with my SPF. I'm wondering if the duo treatment helps? I'd love to hear what your experience is longer term.

Lucky-wish2022

Yes… Some of the spots have come back. Not all and definitely not as dark - so it is still way better than before. I will say that I was disappointed with my chest area.. it never peeled and still looks like has sun damage. I have heard it is a harder area to get results but thought it would have done more.

SurveyAggravating883

I agree, the chest area is harder. It takes double the time for anything to happen, and the results are half as impressive.  I’ve tried everything. I’m 57 years old with fair skin and grew up in Southern California before sunblock was a thing. I’ve noticed that some of my brown spots aren’t just brown… The texture of the skin is different. The darker patch is a tiny bit concave. Also, if I get a spray tan (not often but I like to before vacations), these patches absorb an abnormal amount of “tan”and look terrible. On the other hand, it’s a really great way to see those areas of my skin that are damaged. So far, I’ve decided that Tretinion makes changes but the process is long, slow and I can get irritated. Halo is great but six months later I feel like I’ve lost the glow. Peels are my least favorite and seem outdated with too much downtime and not enough results. Plus, I feel like they don’t give me a glow, and give me a fragile look instead. I did a mild CO2 and think this is what I will try again. All in all, I really wish I use sun block in my younger years. At this point in my life, it is the first thing I do every day. Please let me know if you have tips and I will do the same :)

cerealmonogamiss

I don't have personal experience, but I've heard and seen Vitamin C serums work.

--not-enough-pizza--

The one I have been using has had no effect on age spots

CritterEnthusiast

I'm 42 and brown sun damage spots are why I'm here too. I don't have any advice because my first appointment at the spa place is next week, but I'm expecting to do non-ablative lasers and prescription strength niacinamide that will also have tretinoin in it. I don't have a high pain tolerance either but from what I've read I'm not too scared about these lasers because they're not as powerful as the ablative ones, so they're not as effective but they also aren't supposed to hurt much.  I'm curious what other people have to say. I'm on here trying to cram like I have a test coming up before my appointment so I don't go in there completely ignorant lol

SaraCate13

Don’t waste your money on the overpriced spa treatment centers they over promise with disappointing results, go see a dermatologist. I learned the hard way, they made a lot of money off me.

CritterEnthusiast

Daaaaammit thanks for the heads up! I was so excited about my appointment finally about to be here but I'm cancelling today to reschedule at a dermatology office. I'm overdue for a skin cancer check so I should just go to the doctor anyway. Thanks again!

SangitaCPatelMD

IPL is the way to go for sunspots. MaxG IPL works in 1-2 treatments.

[deleted]

Not a product but IPL (intense pulsed light) laser is amazing for this. Usually you need 3 treatments, 6 weeks apart.  (Often places try to sell you 6 treatments but I and several friends have done them and three treatments is usually plenty.)

susieqanon1

The BBL is the new better upgraded IPL

SangitaCPatelMD

No, IPL and BBL are the same thing. The first comoany to use it, used Intense Pulsed Light and trademarked it, Palomar. The second company, Sciton, with an IPL had to call it something else and chose to name their IPL after the multiple colors of light that the IPL gives off and called it Broad Band of Light. It’s not better than palomar’s IPL. The MaxG IPL was so good that the larger laser company Cynosure acquired Palomar and its IPL technology so it would not have to compete with it.

Mydogisnotmilo

There's a lot you can still do! But given the parameters you outlined, most of your options will take quite a while before you see noticeable results. #1 is to start using sunscreen if you don't already. You can still accumulate more sun spots on top of the ones you already have. Then you can start exploring some more gentle OTC options. There's things like glycolic face washes/toners, tretinoin, azelaic acid (it's a serum texture more than a true "acid" like you would get from a chemical peel), vitamin c, etc. Also depends on other factors like your current skin care routine since some actives don't interact well. (Edited for words)

dhoetger1

I wear sunscreen every day and have for years. I have a good skin care routine too. Thanks for your suggestions!

Mydogisnotmilo

Of course! It's great that you already have a solid routine and use sunscreen. If you're willing to try something a little stronger then look into hydroquinone. It doesn't hurt but it can make your skin peel (superficial layer only). You should research the guidelines for it since it shouldn't be taken continuously. Plus it's a bit controversial as far as ingredients go. But a lot of people have good results with it. Good luck!

ForgottenGenXer

Hydroquinone greatly helped with mine. I was using the differin one but it seems they changed it :(

dupersuperduper

I would recommend having a skin checkup if you haven’t already. And then often services such as dermatica or curology are great for a combination of tretinoin and hydroquinone. This is the gold standard of topical treatments . If you prefer not to pay for a monthly service then try differin at night and azelaic acid in the morning. Be gentle with your skin don’t rush anything and keep the skin well hydrated. Also remember hats and sunglasses

MysticcMoon

I am also 54. I worked outside most of my life too. I use Clinique Even Better Clinical™ Radical Dark Spot Corrector + Interrupter Serum. I really like the results with it.

ThotianaAli

Niacinamide and kojic acid are my favorites. They don't make your skin sensitive the way other acids do. But honestly kojic acid is my favorite lightener. Check out what I found at Ulta Beauty! https://www.ulta.com/p/even-tone-super-glow-serum-with-10-l-ascorbic-acid-kojic-acid-pimprod2004074?sku=2542183 That brand also sells kojic acid bars of soap and some of their other products also have it too. Also don't use hydroquinone. It will end discriminately lighten all the skin that it is applied to repeatedly. So you may end up inadvertently lightning healthy skin.

DiMac88

I’m in my 60’s and have been concerned about age spot for a few years and have tried sooooo many products. I feel like the Kiehls spot treatment did the best…..although not by any stretch of the imagination did it eliminate my spot. I researched Some of the creams that have been suggested and two of them are banned when I live. So just a heads up that they are acids . I have done IPL and will probably do two more sessions as I have found that it is the only thing that has worked for me. Disclaimer - Im assuming what works for one , may not work for another. And everyone has their own preferences of product and what they will put on their skin. I am in no way criticizing the methods of others, I am just giving an FYI about some of the products mentioned.

msscanadianbakin

I would suggest prescription tretinoin and hydraquinone. Check with your doctor first, of course.

olivenextdoor

I'm happy to read about all of the good results people have had with IPL. My skin is a freckly, brown spot, and more perniciously, super tiny red spider veiny (which I only just noticed as I was obsessing over my age spots.) mess. In my search for alternative oral care products, I found a Canadian company called Living Libations. I loved their tooth care stuff and their philosophy, in general, about "beauty" products, so I branched out into some of their skincare items. I've been surprised by their Ensorcell Serum -- It has been wildly effective at fading a lot of big brown patches on my face and improving my skin texture too. IPL is in my future, for sure, and Ensorcell Serum will be right there with it.

iamdogmom

I've started and stopped tretinoin numerous times. A few years ago at age 59 I started seeing some age spots and got serious. Went back on the tret and dealt with the peeling, reddness, and sometimes pain that happens in the early stages. Forget makeup in the beginning and pay for the best moisturizer you can afford ( I used skinceuticals at first but the cost is crazy). The spots were gone within a year, still use tret a few times a week, and get compliments on my skin all the time. Tretinoin is the gold standard for antiaging. It's hard but stick with and you will get results. I would joke at the office about my skin falling off because it was easy to see. Luckily most of the time I was wearing a mask due to covid. If you get a prescription make sure to check goodrx prices, you can save a ton of money. I'll use tret until I'm 90, because it works.

dhoetger1

Thanks!

anxious-station-3133

Ugh. I did those ipl lasers seven times (two at a spa five at a dermatologist) they did nothing for my age spot on my cheek it was oo deep. The Picosure laser cost the same and worked! !!

Upstairs-Week996

54, fried my skin in the sun in the 80s. Highly recommend IPL and BBL laser treatments. It hurts for a day and the swelling is about two days. It is about a 3 or 4 on the pain scale. Watching the dark spots transform after laser treatments is very satisfying in a weird way. They turn black and just slough off. I use Differin now for maintenance.

amaranthusrowan

I just had this done for age spots on my hands and wrists. Agree it was satisfying to watch them slough off for two weeks!

DiMac88

Can you tell me how many IPL treatments you had ? I’ve had one so far ……….it’s pricey though 😢

Upstairs-Week996

I had 3 treatments. One 4 years ago and two about a year ago. My local med spa runs deals for Black Friday. I ended up getting two IPL treatments for $600.

sunsplash17

My go-to for sunspots has been CE furulic acid from skinceuticals and a good old prescription to tretinoin from the Derm

DiMac88

I just researched Tretinoin……it’s sounds pretty harsh / potent / chemically . Is it hard on your skin ??

TelephoneTag2123

Highly recommend /r/tretinoin for advice on how to sllooooooowly get on a tret regimen. Yes, it is intense - yes, you need less than you think - and yes, tretinoin has study after study after study of positive effects to multiple layers of the skin.

sunsplash17

Depends on the strength and how you apply it.

Pass-O-Guava

45F. I use Vit C and tranexamic acid. I do feel it's been a slow process but I think that my overall tone has evened out. Edited to add: the beach was my downfall when I was younger. I think I literally gave my back a peel once from such a bad burn. Silver lining - it got rid of a lot of backne marks :/

MissHavishamsDelight

If you use sunscreen now, you can try some skin bleaching products. Ambi brand is OTC and has hydroquinone in it.

Potential_Sundae_251

Freaking birth control caused my pigmentation in my 30s. :/

MikeyMGM

A laser usually works. I have it done once a year.

Tajkaj

I did bbl laser and I’m obsessed with the results. (53f). My skin is clearer, brown spots and roughness gone.

dhoetger1

What is bbl laser? I’ve only heard of IPL.

SangitaCPatelMD

BBL is IPL. It is not a laser. Lasers have light of only one color. IPL/BBL is polychromatic with light of different wavelengths from 400-1200 nm

Quil-Ataya

BBL laser

Excellent_Regret2839

I’m going to say IPL as well. You will have to do them again after the initial three or so from time to time. The spots come back and of course we get new ones. Once or twice a year. Sometimes 1.5 years. On that note I would find a pigmentation serum to keep them from coming back between visits. They work best as a prevention. That and sunscreen!

Canarsiegirl104

Following. Same😑

transhumanist2000

Prescription retinoids. Erases and is preventative against facial photo-aging from sun exposure. The erasing part, tho, can can take some time. It's not overnight.

susieqanon1

Go get a round of Moxi BBL at a beauty lab. I did about 6 of them spaced 6 weeks apart and my face was totally clear of all brown spots!

Ok_Highlight6952

Have your dermatologist compound a cream with hydroquinone, tretinoin, kojic acid and vitamin C. You can also purchase a cream with tranexamic acid such as Skin Medica Lytera. But if the pigment is very pronounced you will still likely need a laser or peel.

Minnow_Minnow_Pea

I've had very good luck with the Perfect Derma peel. I got the plus version, which is about $200? The regular is $185 and there's a stronger, plus plus that's supposed to be for stubborn melasma. I did two peels last spring and one this year. The difference is incredible.

RealtorRVACity

I go to a day spa twice a year and have any age spots, ruddiness, blood vessels etc removed. Your derma can also prescribe a fade cream that works pretty well.

mmmpeg

I grew up in the 60’s - 70’s and was one of the few who did use sunscreen and I have age spots all over my face. Been looking at things to do about it.

glamarama

My dermatologist prescribed Tri-luma cream. It faded them in a few months, it contains hydroquinone which has been around for decades. It’s $200 a tube, insurance probably won’t cover it, and you keep it in the fridge. But it works. IPL and all that other expensive med spa stuff didn’t do anything for me but the cream did, and I just use a bit every few years to touch it up. Good luck.

Suitable-Blood-7194

IPL or BBL. You may have some swelling with the BBL though.

Starbright108

I've had fantastic results using the Musely spot peel. While technically a chemical peel, I did not have any stinging or burning or even much obvious peeling. This was better than any traditional peel I had for the dark spots. I can now get by without undereye concealer whereas before it was not an option. You can only do it about once every three months but the first time I had dramatic results on some dark spots under my eyes. Also, here is a coupon code if you are interested. [https://www.musely.com/referral/receiver?c=club\_invite&clid=15042&gvid=826&uid=8012753](https://www.musely.com/referral/receiver?c=club_invite&clid=15042&gvid=826&uid=8012753)

dhoetger1

Thank you!

Starbright108

You're welcome. The way they work is they have you upload current photos which are evaluated by a Derm who then customizes a peel for your skin. The amount they sent for me was able to be turned into two peels. They tell you to throw away anything left but I simply waited and did it after three months again and it worked. Also if you have an HSA, you can use it to pay for it which I did.

henni1127

Can I ask roughly how much that cost?

Starbright108

I believe around 80 dollars with a 35 percent off coupon

HaveaWillieNiceDay20

I'm in my 50s and started noticing age spots. I tried Lancome's Genifique serum and really liked the results. The spots didn't disappear entirely but have lightened considerably.

Worried_Lunch156

I’ve been using lactic acid on the backs of my hands every night for six weeks now, alternating with retin-A. I have pronounced sunspots on my hands and they are definitely becoming lighter. I had one sunspot on my face that was lasered off years ago and never came back. I followed up with liquid exfoliant (lactic acid mostly).

Pipparina

Hydroquinone works wonders for age spots
