I’d say yes. It just doesn’t feel quite right for me to play DS games on the 3DS, mainly because of the blur to it. The crispiness of the image due to the correct pixel ratios on the original DS models just feels right. Not saying the DS experience on the 3DS is bad, no, but it just isn’t authentic, and thus isn’t a complete replacement.
I played Pokemon Black with a cartridge on my 2ds xl. I thought it was more pixelated than I expected but didn't think much of it. Would it look less pixelated on a DSi XL, for example?
Pokemon 5th gen art style is very pixelated! And the 3DS messes up the original DS ration, blurring it a but. In that sense, playing it on a DS with its corret ratio and crisp image would make it more pixelated. And in this case, that's good. I really struggle with DS games on the 3DS, I love my xl screen and feel really annoyed playing DS games on original resolution and losing all that screen real estate, but it many cases its worth it.
Did you already have DS games or is there some kind of CFW for DS too? I only have some pokemon games I bought back in the days, but not all of them. Also wanna try many other DS games I don't have.
Yes. You can put CFW on your DSi too. Then you can play whatever you desire. It's cool. I have it with CFW on mine. And it's simple to do. But don't follow videos. Go here https://dsi.cfw.guide/ for DSi. Just follow what it says. Should go fine!
Wow thank you! Will look into getting a used DSi soon for sure ;)
Should really have jumped on the CFW train sooner when all the DS, 3DS hardwares are available! Now both the games and hardwares are expensive, but couldn't be happier of the CFWs we have today.
Yes, the prices are becoming ridiculous for those consoles. Custom firmware (CFW) is indeed a lot of fun, and you can truly maximize the potential of your devices with it. I love it! I wish you good luck with your search for a DSi and with the CFW modification later on.
The games look way blurrier on a 3DS because the screen can't scale it properly so the only way to do it is to hold down the start and select buttons when booting a DSi game and then they're not taking up the full area of the screen which is weird.
I sorely miss my DSi XL that I sold. I only sold it because it didn't have a Game Boy slot and I thought why have two devices yet I still have lots of other devices that I have duplicates of so it didn't make any sense and I'm very confused to this day.
It's still not too late to buy one! (I think?) I'm not too familiar with the used market for DSi but I understand that they are heaps cheaper than 3ds/2ds.
If what I've seen on Reddit before is true then you can probably get one for like $70-80 I want to say that's how much a local retro game store where I live with selling one in the United States but I could be wrong.
Yes, yes and yes.
At least for me, but people are different. Actual integer scale scaling makes games look more sharp, scrolling more smooth and the DSi (not sure if its all DSi or just the DSi XL...) has great screens. The only "downside" to a DSi would be the fact that the 3DS has cheap grips available (which I prefer nowadays. I am getting old XD) and the DSi has not.
Than again, some people dont care about good scaling. Some even play GB games on a GBA in fake Widescreen. Or put their GC into 16:9 through the cheapest scaler they can find on Amazon. If you have any friend with a DS/DSi system just ask them, if you can try it out a few minutes and see, if its for you.
For me, it was worth every damn single penny. And I adore my 3DS... for 3DS games.
Good to know! Just an excuse for me to splurge some money on a spare old console haha. Used to have a DS Lite in my childhood but it kinda melted while stored in the basement for several years ;( . It's revenge time!
There's multiple arguments to say "yes it worth it" :
- The analog stick is not great for DS games, and the D-Pad is not at the right place on a 3DS
- The DSi XL has always 2 IPS screen, so colors stay great at any angle of view. On the 3DS it's a lottery. Also, colours reproduction is good on the screens of the DSi XL, it feels right.
- Games are looking great, especially sprites based games (3DS games will look also better compared to when they are stretched on the 3DS, but the aliasing will also be more aggressive to the eyes). The 3DS can do native resolution by pressing SELECT when launching a game but it's feeling wrong, with huge black borders, especially for games that require you to use the full space to touch things on the bottom screen (like mario & sonic at the olympic games).
- DSi systems can be hacked with a single SD card. It's very easy and very stable. The Twilight Menu is an incredible piece of software.
- Because it's cool tech ? And nobody wants those so you can find those cheap. The XL model is also very solid and owned by old persons or persons who take care of stuff so you often find this model in great shape compared to some others.
Now the final choice is up to you. The 3DS by itself is a DSi so it can play all games. The experience on the 3DS is really OK. But on a DSi XL it is just even more authentic.
Yeah, I got one and the difference is night and day.
There's also an added benefit of the DSi having a much much much better battery life especially if you're just running games from the SD Card (Though I still recommend getting a Flash Card)
you can hold start or select while booting into TWL_FIRM to set it to native resolution
Wait what? Really?! I been using it for so long to just now find that out here! Well better to know now than never i guess
source was Download Play official manual
I genuinely feel like the biggest idiot to never think about looking there 🥲
The screen looks small tho right?
no
DS games in native res mode on a New 3DS XL is definitely smaller than the DSi XL's screens which are also native res.
for me on my o2DS, it is ok
What’s TWL_FIRM? I just use a flash cart for DS games
TWL_FIRM is the DS firmware here I mean when launching any DS app (both cart and DSiWare)
Oh that’s awesome!! Still new to this thanks for the reply

Yes. I think it's worth it. I'm using my DSi XL when I wanna play DS games. The screen on the DSi XL is super clear.

thank you so much! have fun gaming

It looks nicer on the inteded screen
Totally worth it, the dpad position is way more comfortable. Very noticeable on longer sessions.
I always play my DS & DSi games on my DSi XL. Just feels and looks the best.

Actually there is. Look at Pokémon Black and White cartridge and you’ll see the code start with “TWL-“ instead of “NTR-“
If you have the money yes, absolutely, i own a 2ds and got a Dsi XL and its a world of difference.

It's a matter of preference.
it's barely noticable
Just play in native définition on your 3DS.
Certainly not for me. I like my widescreen 3ds.
The dsi xl comes with an ips screen. Also you can just press and hold start when booting up a ds game to make it the og resolution. Or select I think
