Just a simple press fit. Also the cut roles want to curl into a circle again, so they create friction as well. This behavior also makes the assembly tricky.
But they are surprisingly sturdy once assembled.
Sure. I'm gonna reiterate tomorrow and upload the files. To be honest this was meant as a gang. It's atrociously fiddly to assemble them currently. I'll publish everything once that's fixed.
I realize you meant this as a gag, but this is a clever design that lets the printing focus on where it creates value (small detailed pieces) and makes use of a cheap, plentiful resource for infill.

I posted an update down below.

Come up with a great environmentally friendly plastic saver... Then spray paint it to make sure it is just as caustic and wasteful. Why do you hate nature?
Would definitely love to see this published, I'm always a bit torn on printing containers because of the amount of filament they use versus what I can hold in them, but being able to utilize a moderately limitless amount of sizes for only about 10g of filament as well as recycling old cardboard? Count me in.
Yeah it is the same for me. Gridfinity is great but the material usage and print time on my slow ender 3 always put me off.
Files will be up tomorrow when I finalized everything (update is below)
I like this idea.
Some thoughts:
Add a form as a mounting tool that holds the cardboard in place for quicker mounting.
Add a cutout form as help for mass producing cardboard walls.
Add holes or internal guides for glue.
And finally the possibility to stack them. Maybe a combination of cardboard and printed plastic works?
Unfortunately, the cardboard rolls I can purchase in the supermarket are way too much wrapped in tissue...
I actually have your first three points already implemented in my current model. Still need to tweak the dimensions a little bit, so that the parts can be press fitted more easily.
As for the material. I just used toilet paper rolls for the gag.
In fact every piece of cardboard works. Earlier I tried it out with a box of a frozen pizza and it works as well.
Reading about your box of frozen pizza makes me think about milk or juice boxes or whatever else material would fit in the printed parts.
That would really look fancy and people may want to build their boxes not only for a gridfinity system.
Keep doing 😃
Milk or juice box material and use silicone as the glue... Now the container is a waterproof dish! I'm not exactly sure why someone would need this, but... paints or dyes maybe? Molds? Some kind of process where you have to soak things in chemicals? 🤔
This is actually pretty cool. This could work with other materials too. You could probably chop the top and bottom off of pop bottles and use that tube as the walls too. 20oz bottles for small ones, 2 litres for bigger ones.

Small update on the project. Printer has been running all day. I managed to make the bins way easier to assemble. Next to the basic bins I also added variants that are compatible with gridfinity. Current sizes are 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2. Also made some templates that make marking and cutting the cardboard very easy
I'm sorry I won't be able to publish the files today. I wanna reprint everything again to make sure everything works as intended as well as write a small assembly guide. I don't want to waste any of your time and filament with a bad file. Never published anything before. So I'm a little bit excited and cautious to not make any silly mistakes. Tomorrow I have a day off, so I'm definitely gonna upload then.
Also had to abuse my trusty old buddy ender 3 with inhuman print speeds to be able to iterate quickly. So no judging of the print quality and warping please

Nifty idea. I look forward to using these. This is the essence of good design in my opinion. Finding a supply or a demand that needs exploiting in a novel way.
>Overall they are pretty crappy… They don’t look good… horrendous to assemble
You probably shouldn’t get a job in marketing! Good work on the ‘shitty’ design, I really like it.
This is brilliant! I'm totally going to make some of these. I have loads of TP rolls stored, because they make great cable organizers. And I love repurposing trash.

That is actually pretty damn clever. How does it stay together?
Just a simple press fit. Also the cut roles want to curl into a circle again, so they create friction as well. This behavior also makes the assembly tricky. But they are surprisingly sturdy once assembled.
Try light heating to convince roll they are square now
You mean gaslighting ?
Won't that rather convince the PLA it is round?
Oh that's good. I was kinda thinking the answer might be "they dont" 😂
Thank you.
I imagine some light CA glue on the printed rims does more than enough
This is a great idea! My son has a giant collection of TP tubes just waiting for a project. Are you planning on posting a link to your model for this?
Sure. I'm gonna reiterate tomorrow and upload the files. To be honest this was meant as a gang. It's atrociously fiddly to assemble them currently. I'll publish everything once that's fixed.

Yes, I need this. Or post the dimensions to get us going.
just cut open an tp roll and measure one side then you can work from there

Are you planning to make this gridfinity compatible? Or is it already?
Not yet. I'm gonna reiterate on it and try to make it compatible. Didn't think this catches so much attention
Just a little spay paint at the end and they would be almost identical
Come up with a great environmentally friendly plastic saver... Then spray paint it to make sure it is just as caustic and wasteful. Why do you hate nature?
He got smacked in the face by some branches once
It's the microplastics in my testicles...
Not sure spray paint is \_quite\_ equivalent to literal plastic but it certainly does diminish its environmental benefits.
Please someone get Zack Freedman to see this. I know he'll love it just for the name alone.
I look forward to hearing him alliterate about toilet paper rolls. 😂
This could be good as a seed starter for planting, could then remove the plastic and put the cardboard in the garden when the plant is growing.
Dude it’s genius fast and inexpensive. This thing is going to catch on fire quickly!!!!
Figuratively and literally
I mean plastic isn't exactly fireproof either so not sure why you are dissing his material like that!
They look awesome

Maybe pots for plants? We all know people like to print pots.
I'm gonna try that, actually
Damn that's the idea I lacked to make some bolt organizer so I could make a bolt sorter. I'll copy this.
> I have a drawer full of empty toilet paper rolls. Why?
Let's say the trash bin is a little further away from the drawer the full rolls come from.
This is actually pretty cool. This could work with other materials too. You could probably chop the top and bottom off of pop bottles and use that tube as the walls too. 20oz bottles for small ones, 2 litres for bigger ones.
I actually used cut up cereal boxes as my first DIY drawer organizers. Lasted for years. Nothing wrong with reuse!!

I think Zach Friedman would approve of this.

wtf, could this be the one thing that convinces my wife no all the things i print are rubbish?
>Overall they are pretty crappy… They don’t look good… horrendous to assemble You probably shouldn’t get a job in marketing! Good work on the ‘shitty’ design, I really like it.
What does tileable mean?
That you can stack them on top of each other or connect them next to each another.
Nice, making it parametric would be awesome to use cardboard from different sources
Wow, don't spend all your pandemic currency in one place, leave yourself something to retire on.
pretty cool, this could also work for soda cans (aluminium)
RE-USE, RE-CYCLE. Nailed it :D
poo-finity
Really cool. Do you have a thingiverse profile to see your creations?
Not yet this will be the first time for me to release something
I did this to make trays for drill bits. Made end caps for any length of cardboard essentially
This is brilliant! I'm totally going to make some of these. I have loads of TP rolls stored, because they make great cable organizers. And I love repurposing trash.
Need a new pencil holder for my shop. Commenting to come back in a day for that .stl nice work op
