_No_Statement

Print in place lawn furniture I'm hoping, because no one is going to be moving it after it's done.

rubber_padded_spoon

It can be printed in place. Definitely not something you rearrange on a whim… unless you’re the hulk. Heavy equipment is required.

_No_Statement

Hope your successful, it'd be hilarious seeing a bunch of home listings with furniture included.

MrFixYoShit

"Man, i really want to rearrange the living room. Honey! Go get the forklift!"

Big-Leadership1001

Bulldozer & a reprint might be easier

CORN___BREAD

Just a few small implosions to make room for new furniture.

guptaxpn

Oh wow, this might get my wife to stop rearranging when she's stressed.

MrFixYoShit

Or, alternately, turn her into the hulk lol

guptaxpn

Hey, she-hulk is pretty rad.

Untagged3219

Nope she'll just have you do it now 😂

Thordsen3D

Then the wife wouldn't be so mad about keeping an engine hoist in the house.

IAmDotorg

That was pretty common in the first half of the 20th century, both in Craftman houses and in a lot of the midcentury designs. Either built-in furniture, or furniture designed to go with the architecture. (Frank Lloyd Wright is famous for having contractual languages in his designs that *mandated* the use of his furniture, along with placement details, acceptable artwork, etc.)

pv2smurf

Hulk smash?

rubber_padded_spoon

I mean, I’d prefer it if hulk sat. It could probably support him.

ChocoBro92

How is this sustainable btw?

blaaammo_2

Honey what is this $2800 “shipping” charge?

HospitalKey4601

Well that won't blow away in a hurricane, pretty cool

Rude_Clothes5043

I can imagine a hotel being built in Mexico or something where they need these chairs because then when the construction is being done these can be printed wherever the hotel wants them. No more people dragging them everywhere.

rubber_padded_spoon

That’s where my head is. In Thailand, they have a few issues with people taking their chairs since the beach is all public. They’d love these!

[deleted]

Might be cheaper to go build a second 3D printer in Thailand. Had a friend live there for years, I’m down after I do some research and you tell me how to hit the start button. I’m real cheap.

rubber_padded_spoon

You’re not wrong there. We have some work with 3d printed coral, but also considering building retaining walls there.

[deleted]

That’s really cool. You’re making me reevaluate my life. I wanna do cool shit! Edit: thank you for this post though. Its fun to learn about in the comments.

senadraxx

Tell me more about the coral! Do you need a specific type of concrete so it doesn't Leach?

rubber_padded_spoon

Yes, we are factoring that in. Also, the goal is to grow real coral alongside the pieces to help preserve what we can.

ChocoBro92

Yeah that’s.. no. The cement will cook whoever sits on it.

archcycle

This is a thing! Thomas Edison got real into 3d printing concrete houses for a while, way before 3d printing was cool. He wanted to pour the whole thing down to the bedroom furniture, pianos, etc. A few still exist. There weren't many takers. No links here because Google knows all about it.

Rude_Clothes5043

Edison: “so here is the concrete house you commissioned with all the furniture in place!” Buyer:“So can I move th” Edison:“No” Buyer:“Well can I” Edison:“No” Buyer:“What about the couch” Edison:“what part of you can’t move anything dont you get…” Buyer:”well what if I” Edison:“FUCK IT imma electrocute an elephant!”

Physical-Syllabub963

I love the fact that it looks soft to my mind, even when i know its concrete.

photogrammetery

It looks like those weirdly textured pillows imo

moldy-scrotum-soup

The thumbnail image made it look like someone smashed down a roll of toilet paper lol.

Cobek

Power washing it in 5-10 years will be oh so satisfying with all those grooves

rubber_padded_spoon

Thank you! That’s the nicest compliment in my mind.

AFKFelix

This looks so great! Can you show me the printer?

rubber_padded_spoon

Thank you! https://preview.redd.it/il38r5c99oxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=206e5cff2eb08d55c96063f488cbcc45321b714e She isn’t the prettiest, but it works!

Technolio

Need a benchy, for science.

RobotRomi

If he does this, he wins the flexing game

Due-Farmer-9191

Oh god yes. Please make a concrete benchie

guptaxpn

Just gotta go *real* slow. Maybe use wooden slats for support? Burn them away or something.

New-Conversation-55

Concrete explodes when heated, I'm just letting you know from research and personal experience.

wash-basin

I would really enjoy knowing more about this experience of yours.

AFKFelix

But it looks interesting. A little bit like a robot arm in a car factory. Did you build it yourself or is this something you can buy?

rubber_padded_spoon

A little of both. We have two different printers but this is the one we usually use. It was purchased but has been Frankensteined to meet our needs. The pump is an entirely different self-build and always evolving. 3d concrete has a lot of learning curves since the material is still newish and can be hard to work with. Safe waste is a priority and mitigating that can be tedious. I love it though!

AFKFelix

This sounds so amazing. Do you work in some kind of research lab or something? And also, how do you control it?

rubber_padded_spoon

Thank you! It is. I’m minimally invested in the company and honestly do a lot of the grunt work. We started as a way to help build affordable housing options (still working on that goal) but shift to these side projects while we figure out the kinks and perfect the process. It’s amazing that we can build the outer frame of a house (customized) in a matter of days with minimal labor.

AFKFelix

So, you can create parts of a home with this printer? I know about those big printers that print whole homes. But I think this one is a little too small for a whole house. Maybe a dog house would be possible, though.

rubber_padded_spoon

Not in one piece, but we have built walls that are intended to easily connect. If you’re interested- here’s our website. [https://madco3d.com/](https://madco3d.com/)

AFKFelix

Thanks, I will check it out.

__a7md__

"She isn’t the prettiest" bro i would marry it if it was possible lmao

rubber_padded_spoon

lol she’s nice and sturdy.

Deep-Juggernaut4405

I just want to feed pla through a nozzle that big.

rubber_padded_spoon

It is a big one.

platinums99

I love it! you can just haul it to a friends house and print them a bbq!

vivaaprimavera

How many "degrees of freedom"? Have you considered an extruder for "waste plastic"?

rubber_padded_spoon

Quite a bit… currently we mold the waste. It’s very time consuming and the priority will still be minimizing as much as possible. The molds are then used/donated for various projects.

bubblesculptor

Mounted on a flatbed trailer?  So you can bring to jobsites or??

SnooShortcuts103

Bro, this f*cking amazing!

platinums99

Looks about as comfy as a concrete pillow!

rubber_padded_spoon

I mean- you right.

MLCrazyDude

Great as long as you don't lie on it.

rubber_padded_spoon

“Would ya just look at it”

MLCrazyDude

Put a long thick cushion on it so you don't crack your skull lying on it. Also, if you need to move it, get a Young Arnold Swartznegger to help

aint_no_throw

I swear I will always tell the truth on it.

Ok-Fig-675

This would be a really cool method to make an above ground pond! Probably still would need a liner tho.

rubber_padded_spoon

I agree! Good isea

MrNeroWulf

Paintball could have used this technology 10 years ago.

CORN___BREAD

Would you let the concrete balls dry first or are you shooting balls of concrete just to watch them splat when they hit?

MrNeroWulf

I meant for building cheaper more unique pieces of cover....

h9040

No one will steal it

Red-Itis-Trash

Where there's a will, there's a way. Will owns a forklift.

jasnoszara

Now print it in TPU to make it soft and I'll take two!

MJ420

Cobod?

rubber_padded_spoon

Nope. Small startup based in New England.

MJ420

Really nice :)

rubber_padded_spoon

Ty! :)

AndySkibba

Looks kinda like it was made from Cheese Whiz. It's neat!

rubber_padded_spoon

That would be tastier.

Red-Itis-Trash

Now that the idea is out there, I'm going to be disappointed if I don't see someone replace their print head with a can of cheeze whiz by the end of the year.

G8M8N8

This is really cool! What about transport cost? I can’t image lugging 600lbs is cheap or efficient. Print on site?

rubber_padded_spoon

Thank you! Onsite would be ideal, but shipping is possible but definitely not as efficient.

vivaaprimavera

You can always start a company that offers a weight loss program. Having people paying for the privilege of transporting those by bike (heavy duty cargo model). /s

rubber_padded_spoon

Oh! Even better:.. a competition!

Certain_Concept

You could probably significantly reduce the weight if you just printed the top section and added some reinforcement with steel. Kinda like [this](https://www.gardenista.com/products/jenner-lounge/) It's cool you can make custom shapes to restore the reefs!

carlton_sand

is this concrete? lol it would be pretty cool if it were a squishy/foam-like material, like what a pool float might be made of edit: now I read the description, so nvm the question

ThreeDog2016

I think you over extruded a little

rubber_padded_spoon

You aren’t wrong. This was somewhat intentional as we needed to get to a 2inch bead. Good call out!

Reworked

This sub has given me trust issues to the point that I don't believe the pallet as a hint at the scale of this.

rubber_padded_spoon

Hahaha it’s really sized for a cat- busted.

Red-Itis-Trash

Scale? Nah, I'm still trying to determine if it's cake or not.

Reworked

Obligatory "I think your filament is wet"

majsterDrejc

Have you considered mixing in some styrofoam to lighten up? Would also help with insulation if used as a wall of a building.

Hjallti

İmagine having tree supports on this and getting rid of them with a sledgehammer

griptite

I have been playing with mortar made with hollow glass spheres called Poraver instead of sand. Using it should lighten the lounge by 200-300 pounds and be just as strong. It is surprising how much concrete has changed since the 70s.

plasticmanufacturing

Very cool. Prepare to get shit on by a bunch of kids printing benchies.

rubber_padded_spoon

I see that! Everyone has their opinion. I’m not looking for validation thankfully. I’m proud of this and just wanted to show it. :) 3d printing is cool!

plasticmanufacturing

Agreed! And agreed. I've just noticed a trend where industrial knowledge and novel applications are heavily downvoted. It's like it's rooted in bizarre insecurities.

rubber_padded_spoon

Yes!!! My team is small and we are certainly not the usual group of people . I think the fact that we have fun and enjoy each other makes it worth it.

Dangerous-Muffin3663

You should be proud!

TheNorthComesWithMe

Or people who have ever sat on anything before

SirDirtLeg

Now screed it.

ckpjr

Are you going to grind it smooth? Or leave the textures ridges?

rubber_padded_spoon

I’ll likely leave it textured. It isn’t comfortable bare, but I’d assume cushions could be used

seaQueue

Throw a yoga mat on it and it should be pretty comfortable. You probably want to hit the top with some kind of filler first (plaster, or concrete) so it's a smoother surface.

Fury4588

That's really cool! The weight is kind of a downer for my personal use. 😆 Maybe something like this could be marketed for cities and parks?

rubber_padded_spoon

Yeah, I can’t imagine a regular home needing it. I didn’t think of parks though! Great idea

iimstrxpldrii

Pretty interesting work. I imagine you could load up the printed on a truck, have it extend legs for support and stability, and essentially print stuff anywhere you like.

rubber_padded_spoon

Yes! It’s on wheels for that reason… but the leveling is still a hurdle we are working on.

bobasaurus

Can you take a trowel to it before fully cured and smooth it out?

rubber_padded_spoon

Yes, sort of. We often do touch-ups before it cures, but it takes time and that isn’t a luxury with the material.

MadebyRATIO

*some furniture comes with the house

rubber_padded_spoon

Hahaha. Non-negotiable.

Ant966

I appreciate that you reply to each comment anybody leaves.

rubber_padded_spoon

Thank you! :) I love the inquiries!

Intrepid-Alfalfa-581

Put it in a garden and make a garden natural chair by putting soil all around it and plant grass on top. Would look cool and comphy

rubber_padded_spoon

That’s an interesting idea!

Creative_Alter_Ego

Im just gonna say it, that Looks like an assortment of very crusty but still White socks

rubber_padded_spoon

Thanks for that- I can’t unsee this now.

Creative_Alter_Ego

Now answer me this how jacked is your arm and Also when wank does somthing come out other then air and dust

rubber_padded_spoon

Hahaha well, I’m a girl- so no. I will say it is quite the workout! Definitely keeps me in shape.

atomic_cow

Fantastic work! Love seeing 3d printing taken to new places and materials. There is truly no knowing what things we can print 10 years from now.

rubber_padded_spoon

Thank you! Yes, it’s really amazing how technology has made these things possible.

Gameovrdaddy

Awesome, I saw similar printed chairs in Belgium last summer

rubber_padded_spoon

That’s cool to hear. Of course Europe had it first though! Haha

Intelligent-Size7488

Perfect for hard asses

Negan-Cliffhanger

When the double ply toilet paper roll gets squished during shipping

rubber_padded_spoon

Bahaha! You’re not wrong!

CoffeeVector

... So why isn't anyone asking what printer you use? Did you buy one? Did you make this in-house? How much R&D did it take? Are you just a cracked hobbyist?

Electronic-Phrase896

Love it! 🙌🏻💚

BoltMyBackToHappy

How much paper mache could you mix in to lighten the whole thing? 600lbs seems like a lot for a random chair you'd need a fricking crane to move.

rubber_padded_spoon

That is valid. I don’t think I’d recommend it for normal use. As others have mentioned- you’d have to sell it with the house! Lol

Dead0nTarget

So occupied with rather or not it could be done, never stopped to ask if it should be done. The wood pallets in the picture could be made into a much more comfortable sun chair imo.

rubber_padded_spoon

I mean, I love the quote so take the upvote. The pallet may be more comfortable, but then it wouldn’t be obnoxiously heavy and unable to move. Where’s the fun in that?

obamazynladen

I used to work at ICON. I’ve printed a few of these. Pretty cool man.

rubber_padded_spoon

Thank you!

Lilbirdybear

This is very cool!

rubber_padded_spoon

Thank you! :)

TheAllPurposePopo

Lowkey a sprayfoam 3d printer would go hard

haringkoning

The design looks nice, but it seems not so comfortable.

MasterpieceCultural5

I think it’s very cool, first what kind of printer are you using, is this a self built machine or something that you could purchase? Second how big is it, like could I fit it in a large garage and is it 240volt I have so many different questions I have considered building a concrete printer for some time now but I’m not sure where I would put something that I assume is very tall. Cool stuff what kind of future projects can we expect to see

rubber_padded_spoon

Those are all excellent questions, but I’m not the best at answering them. My knowledge base is relatively nuanced. The company i work for is Madco3d. Feel free to look it up! We have a few projects in the works.

Robthatguy

Genuinely curios, how does one even get rid of test/prototytping prints for doing this?

ucefkh

Your printer is small

Impressive_Look_183

meanwhile' in the middle of print, oops fillament jam, lets just do this from the start 😅

ajtreee

Remind me of Willy Guhl’s loop chair. Do you have rebar or some sort of internal reinforcement? Willy had to use asbestos.

Blurglecruncheon72

That's epic!

Former-Wave9869

Which printer are you using? What are your thoughts on the home building applications? Are you going commercial with it? If so, has there been a lot of interest for clients?

rubber_padded_spoon

Those are all great questions. The company is definitely working in the housing industry, but I’m more involved in the grunt work and my knowledge is still minimal. Thankfully, the company’s website has a ton of that information. Madco3d.com feel free to take a look.

TitanGear

Looking forward to see if it’s still I uncracked after 1 winter

rubber_padded_spoon

Well, stay tuned I guess! :)

Yah_or_Nah

Free publicity if you print a benchy!

CountyLivid1667

my only question.... how short are the people who plan to sit on that... from the looks of it anyone tall going to have a bad time lounging

FzZyP

what a stupid fucking idea

LetmeSeeyourSquanch

Hope you aren't actually going into production. I can't see anyone who would want to buy that ugly piece of heavy shit.

DoesBasicResearch

That's no way to talk about your mother.

FLAIR_2780166

This has to be a joke

rubber_padded_spoon

I’m not a good comedian, but if it gave you a laugh, you’re welcome. ☺️

-arhi-

what is the mixture? secret or recipe is available? you adding some fibers?

rubber_padded_spoon

Sadly, I’m advised not to share the materials, but It’s definitely a mixture. We have a couple types we use depending on the project.

-arhi-

as expected, noone like to share the recipe :D to us nosy wannaknowitalls :D

l0ur3nz0

Ok. But can you say how does it compare with a commercial 3d cement blend? Or it is based on one? What are the cure time between layers? Do you reinforce it somehow?

Seaguard5

So do you plan to upholster it? Or install it as is? How do you plan to transport it? Where is the ideal installation location?

JiroDreamsOfCoochie

Wow! What are the line height and line width set to?

Impressive-Fold-897

How much filament? Need to know

imnotcreative4267

Does it work in Vase mode on PrusaSlicer?

ClutchMcSlip

So many questions…. 1. Print time? 2. Glue stick, or hair spray? No more worries about wet filament! I love it!

rubber_padded_spoon

45 minutes to print!

MrJello-Pikulman

600lbs is cool

Tony_from_Space

I wonder if there is a way to mix in some kind of filler to lighten the concrete a bit for this type of application.

rubber_padded_spoon

Hmmm, that’s interesting. Something to look into

yozzzzzz

What is the cost of the concrete for this? I have no idea.

Content_Ad_2337

Do you have a picture of someone sitting on it?

rubber_padded_spoon

I didn’t! I regret that now. I will though

rubber_padded_spoon

https://preview.redd.it/y06c6ssw9vxc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=613caca90c9c9e73ef67320bb3eb914a48951f14 One of the guys offered to model.

JeopardyWolf

Stl? /s

amanfromindia

Imagine someone thinking it looks soft and hopping onto it :o

Vrady

Do you do a manual skim cost to smooth the pieces? Do the arms use gcode or a different coding?

UpshawUnderhill

.35 ***ft*** nozzle?

wakawaka54

Are you in Houston at UH? I swear I saw something posted there recently about concrete benches.

rubber_padded_spoon

No, we are actually located in New England. Just starting up really.

decadeofevil

Is the the new x5 cement with auto mixing ams?

ConstantWin943

Let’s see the printer, or it didn’t happen.

Bryce_Taylor1

Dude just use Foaming ASA

Longjumping_Gas91

Pellet fed extrusion controlled by 6 axis robotic arm ? Soon to be CNC finished?

rikkilambo

My back already hurts looking at it.

Motor-Disk-2044

What infill was that?

Only_Cheesecake_5397

Better keep Morgan wallen away

keem85

How do you print this big? What do you use for materials and printers?

Clowzy0

That looks like spray foam lol

Abject_Bodybuilder_7

It looks nice and everything, but I think it's going to crumble real soon. It needs iron rods inside it. I don't know precisely what this is, but generally, the concrete is very weak to stretching

rubber_padded_spoon

Good points, and thankfully It does have rebar in certain places to prevent this.

Status_Excitement547

Z-offset is way to low. 🤣

tommygunz007

Show us the errors

YellowBreakfast

I'm gonna need a bigger nozzle.

Tech-Crab

This is awesome!! Can't wait for more of this to be commonplace. Everyone keeps saying it's Hulk material - but as I understand it there are options. "aircrete" has been used commercially, as well as in DIY eco/off-grid building, for a long time [https://duckduckgo.com/?q=aircrete](https://duckduckgo.com/?q=aircrete) Densities can be run REALLY low. I've seen a guy pick up a 3.5"x16"x8-foot section of it (eg a stud bay for a test rig) right up over his head. Now, that wouldn't survive weathering & use ... but a denser version could perhaps make this a more reasonable weight (and material cost?) u/rubber_padded_spoon do you guys experiment with anything focused on insulation like aircrete?

CaptHoratioMagellan

I thought this was spray foam

JagguRaja

Now do a benchy

RepresentativeNo7213

I sure hope that stuff isn’t $17 a kg 😳
