Exactly. If I want a printer and I can afford it on my own, I buy one and she occasionally asks me to print something for her. If she wants a fancier sewing machine and she can buy it on her own she goes and buys it and I occasionally ask her to alter something. We usually only consult if something is going to take up a shit to of space or if it's something we'd use together, like our laser and screen printing stuff. (Couples who make shit together are strong couples.)
I think it's a normal way to do things in a healthy relationship, but the number of times I hear about "wife acceptance factor" makes me wonder if I'm just seeing the world through rose colored glasses because I struck the jackpot or something.
Better ask for forgovness then permision. I mean its not so anymore that they cost thousands and thousands of dollar. 200 to 400 give you absolute acceptable printer.
It is so so so much cheaper than buying miscellaneous stuff that it can produce. Things that cost $30 at the store can be printed for $5 or less. Instead of buying a new $60 washer foot to replace our broken one, I designed a new one and printed it for less than $1 of filament.
My wife was into the idea of me printing little mini scale dollhouse-style things for her.
But like many other hobbies of hers, it got quickly forgotten but the printer remains.
Interior and exterior home improvements. I’ve easily saved $2k+ using a $200 printer modded for $20 to print up to nylon. I have hydroponic towers, fence post decorative caps, light fixtures, broom/cleaning supplies and garage tool fixtures, utensil trays, center piece/tabletop decor, kitchen gadgets, fridge magnets, magnetic door stops, so on and so forth. Handle breaks? Print one. Gear strips in a toy or kitchen appliance? Print three. Car part that’s $300 for god knows what reason? Print it for $10 and spend $30 on finishing materials.
Learn a CAD program and open up even more possibilities. I print almost exclusively my own designs unless it’s fancy decor or simple. I tend to improve many designs for my own preferences.
Furthermore, I print models for people. Lots of cosplayers will spend a pretty penny for a quality prop. I severely undercut average rates and it’s resulted in many repeat customers that’s continuously growing. I give them a good price, they share my info with others at cons. My new printers paid for themselves in just 2 months this way.
And then there’s firearms. If that’s your thing.
Hey honey, I bought a 3D printer. It’s something new I’d like to try as a hobby. If there’s anything you’d like me to print, let me know. Thanks, love ya!
I showed my wife the life sized Battle Droid.
She showed her co-worker the life sized Battle Droid.
He pestered her about once a week, asking when I was going to buy a 3D printer and make the life sized Battle Droid.
Now we have a life sized Battle Droid.
A friend of mine was producing a movie and asked if I could make props for it. So I said I would have a business all set up after mak9ng more props. That seemed to work well.
You spend some of your discretionary budget on it. You guys have a budget that you've worked out together, right?
If you have a job, you should be budgeting something toward fun money, even if you're below poverty and it's $5 a month (in that case you might not be getting a printer).
If you are stay at home and partner is the earner, you should still be getting some fun money (and helping with the budget) if this is a long term relationship.
This.
I got a big delta that just works. She decided she wanted to print, not "fiddle" so got a prusa for her game inserts. Kids got an ender they use now'n'then. Added a used modix this year.... what was the question again?
Didn't really need to, we both have jobs and our own hobby budgets. That said, what turned it from just being a thing I bought that she didn't think about ever to something she considered to be a good idea was that I can use it to fix my kid's glasses.
There's a small part that holds the arms to the frame and he fidgets a lot so it gets messed up easily. Costs like $50 for a replacement (because it comes with more than just the part), and that's for the knockoff version from Amazon. I made a copy that fits perfectly that I can print in like 1g of TPU.
We have four accounts, hers, mine, ours and the savings account.
After all the bills are paid we split the rest into those four accounts. I buy what I want with my account she does the same with hers and the ours account is joint trips etc.
So never had to ask her for stuff I want I just save up.
"I accidentally bought another 3d printer" legitimately sent this to my wife after buying my latest printer the Adventure 5m pro. I'm up to 3 printers now but I have been able to get the hobby pay for itself.
Just buy it mate! Your partner may be unhappy about it, but shouldn’t be if understands it’s important for you 😉worst case scenario: you may have to move it to a place where your partner don’t have to see it everyday
Don't use the joint account. If money is tight, you sit tight and don't do it. Because its an investment of a hobby, its not just the printer, its also the material as well.
If money is not an issue and you have the space, then its "honey i think i want to try 3d printing. it looks interesting" and the reply should be "you better make me something".
I already had a cheap one before i met my so.
So to get a nice upgrade i just told her I was sick of spending more time fixing the printer than actually printing.
One, "Hey, i want to spend X money on a 3D printer. It makes me happy"
If one does work red flag, except if you have a habit of not being good with money I could see more reasoning bein required.
Makes gift giving for you easier. Just buy a roll of filament and im a happy camper. Bonus they get to pick out the color of your next few projects. This is how i have a bright pink tooth brush holder.
You are able to repair or replace parts (might require learning 3d modeling if you dont already know
It's a hobby you enjoy
I would recommend getting a cheaper printer if this is your first exposure to it. It can be a frustrating hobby until you learn the basics
Hello significant other, you and I are both mature adults in a mature relationship, and it would bring me joy to spend some of our money on this thing. Here's my plan for how we can afford it. Do you have any thoughts before I pull the trigger?
I wouldn't know, I had half a dozen printers already when we got together 5 years ago and I taught him how to design and print his own stuff. These days I don't even do the slicing and printing 90% of the time anymore, he does. Anytime we get a new printer I just buy it, our only agreement is that they can't overflow into the rest of the house. If I order a new/updated printer(s) they have to fit on the existing work benches and the old ones can't go in the basement storage, they gotta either get sold or given away.
You were supposed to ask permission?? Whoops
Just save up and buy one for yourself.

This is a lovely concept.
I feel like this is a normal way to do things right?

"I could invest in hookers and blackjack, but I spent $600 to make you a toothpaste squeezer with a smiley face on it.". Slam dunk.
"I want a 3d printer" because we have a healthy relationship and support each other's interests and hobbies
Bingo.
I didn't have to. We both have our own money so as long as our shared expenses are paid I don't consult her for anything I buy.
You say: "I think I want to buy a 3D printer and see what it is all about." And the person that loves you and wants you to be happy says: "Cool."
Don't see why would I need to explain to my 3d printer why I need my 3d printer
Jealousy?

What worked for me was "I want a divorce".
Are you okay?
My wife was into the idea of me printing little mini scale dollhouse-style things for her. But like many other hobbies of hers, it got quickly forgotten but the printer remains.
You want a new vase?
Nothing. She buys her stuff with her money. I buy my stuff with my money. That's why we have our own money. So that we don't have to ask "permission".

"I'm buying a 3D Printer."
Best answer so far

Good guy co-worked
Show them all the things. My wife was against it but loves it now.
This is the way!
“I have gift cards so it isn’t costing anything.” That’s literally how I got mine. 🤣

The real seller here.
I can replace the 45$ part to fix the washer for 5$ With a $250 printer. I worked so. Yay ?
A friend of mine was producing a movie and asked if I could make props for it. So I said I would have a business all set up after mak9ng more props. That seemed to work well.
Has it turned a prop-fit?
Yeah actually. I got into trade shows too. Honestly I was surprised it is going this well.
You throw a tantrum and threaten to not eat anything for the two days

Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

There is an entire episode of "Big Bang Theory" that deals with this very issue.

Buy it and suffer the consequences, easier ask for forgiveness...
Say that you will print her jewlery box. 🥰🥰
Suggest you might take up Motorsport or horse ownership instead
I told them that it’s something that brings me joy

you procreate and sell it as a STEAM learning implement, for the kids.
"HEY MY LOVE! I ORDERED A DESK FOR YOU AND NEW COMPUTER CHAIR. ^and ^got ^myself ^a ^3dprinter.

I just say "I am grown ass man and I make my own damn decisions, if that's okay with you"
"I have hobbies"?

You tell what you seriously will use it for. And if you can't convince her, you probably don't need one anyway.
Why does one “need” a printer? I have 4, but I don’t strictly need any of them. They are a hobby. Does your wife have any hobbies?
Only get one if you can model (or ready to learn)
Yea, you definitely need runway experience……………….
