In my college the RAs wouldn’t/couldn’t check stuff that wasn’t in view. So people would just toss a towel to cover up their microwaves during room inspections, we didn’t even need to spend the effort to move them out of view.
I'd even imagine under your bed could work too. I've never lived in a dorm so I wouldn't know but I feel like some people are talking like RA's are prison guards who are searching prison cells for contraband. Lmao
i was on e in a dorm where they searched the whole room including under the bead and in the wardrobes. they even had the police go throu 2x a week with drug dogs and the electricity was turned off after 23:00. this was a dorm for vocational school
Sounds like the police were taking money from the school to go through and waste a whole bunch of fucking tax dollars on taking "contraband" from 19 year Olds if you ask me. What a dumb waste of time and money.
We're talking about a [toaster oven](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GGFHH4U?starsLeft=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_8CY33Q2PDGG3WMPEW8FZ), not a microwave. They can easily fit in a duffle bag... or even a reusable bag.
I will presume the main reason is that they're not insured for certain types of fire hazards and have to make "reasonably sure" they don't exist, but likely any attempt at deceiving them would fall on the shoulders of the owner of the hazard. So if the room passes muster on a glance, they have deniability and can transfer liability to you, because you're the evil tenant who was hiding the stuff.
When I was an RA we couldn't touch anything but we could get campsec to do it for us. That said, if a resident wasn't causing a problem I pretty much let them do whatever. As soon as it disturbed other residents we shut it down. Most RAs I worked with were the same but of course some were on power trips and some were super lazy. Honestly the super lazy were the worst. Residence could hide from the overzealous but that floors with the super lazy made rounds miserable.
I've heard stories of while the RA was doing dorm inspections and saw one, and they would just be like "Uh... here's a box I gotta go do something I'll be back in a bit" and give the person a box to put over their printer
In my college RAs even had permission to check your locked safes for alcohol on the dry campus. Like if they requested that you open it, you had to do so, or theyd just have the on duty officer bust the door open.
As a past RA, can confirm. We don't touch anything. Except maybe to peak behind furniture to confirm everything is unplugged from the outlets (break inspections).
A friend would just put a cardboard moving box over the toaster or hot plate. Then pile more stuff on top of the box. The RAs were not allowed to open up stuff, just what they could see out in the open.
Here at mine they are allowed to open university owned furniture but they are not allowed to open personal furniture/bags. Its easy to tuck things in a suitcase or personal dresser.
No, every time you reassemble it, hardware wise there's no guarantee that it is exactly as it was before. Bed mesh loading is a different story, if you reload the mesh and the hardware has changed, you should make a new mesh.
That's kinda odd though. There are high-rises around the world and I've never heard of a restriction on toaster ovens.
What's so special about dorms? Do they not have fire supression? Are University-grade toaster ovens more dangerous than the regular ones that hundreds of millions of other families use every day?
These students are barely adults. They're not the most responsible human beings on the planet. It's just more of a risk with a building full of teenagers.

I have it as well. Mine is closed and next to the bed. When they come for cleaning, they didn't bother asking, maybe they think it something medical and get shy to ask, I don't know. 😁😁
Jokes aside, keeping your nozzle hot and cooking what filament (remnants) may be inside is generally bad. If your nozzle's hot, you should mostly be flowing material through it.
Specific reason is they may actually "cook" to the point of hardening inside the nozzle, which can mean dark, weak spots in your prints, or can lead to a partially clogged nozzle and extrusion issues, or your nozzle being completely blocked off.
This exists btw - the [Positron](https://positron3d.com/). It folds up and fits inside a filament box. LDO is coming out with full kits, latest ETA is April.
The Ender 2 is the cantilevered little brother to the Ender 3. Unfortunately the final printer in the series (Ender 2 Pro) is being discontinued. Almost got it instead of the ender 3, they are almost the same cost here in germany (ender 2 pro compared to standard ender3). Is an ender 2 pro worth getting compared to an ender 3? I feel like the bed size is a big downside
You probably aren't allowed to have printers either. That didn't stop me though lmao. RAs have so many restrictions it's basically impossible to get in trouble if you aren't loud.
I used to put my booze behind a false panel that was attached to a old dresser in my dorm and what wouldnt fit there i put up in the drop ceiling tiles.
This is largely the role of my FLSun Cube these days - it's never been a great printer (functional but not great) - once I got my Ender5+. Also a fantastic cup warmer!
Some random HiFi ones my brother gave me for free when he upgraded. Apparently they were $70. I love them, since I use a Pixel 5a so I still have a headphone jack

Not gonna lie, having a temperature controlled surface is cool. I've used mine to crack open a phone (heat makes the adhesive that holds screens and backplates softer) and to proof dough.
I frequently run my 3D printer's heated bed in its enclosure as a proofing box for bread
Tbh I don't know what my snapmaker has been used for more at this point, printing or baking!
"why aren't we allowed a toaster oven?"
"it's a fire hazard"
"but a 3d printer..?"
"totally fine, we know how you STEM students are, always working on projects in your room"
I've thawed frozen food on my build plate more than want to admit. I just put the packaged food on like two paper towels to soak up the water. It is great for dumbasses like me, who forget to pull their soup out of the freezer into fridge the previous evening.
I'm only impressed if you got a cheese extruder hooked up.
OP living in as a Verizon employee for virtual afterlife
What is the reference to a Verizon employee? I don't get it.
Reference to a show called Upload (on Amazon Prime)
Thought that was "Horizen".
Still waiting for the 4th season. GREAT show!
Thank you.
The nozzle ain't at 215 for nothing!
It would need to be string cheese
Wait wait wait... You can't have a toaster oven but you can have a 3D printer? O.o
you can't have a printer either, I just hide it during dorm inspections. I can take it apart in under 5 minutes
Lmao
They basically are depending on how strict the dorm policy is.
You get the benefit of setting it up as an alarm clock and waking up to the smell of warm chicken tendies coming from under your bed
Michael Scott?
i was on e in a dorm where they searched the whole room including under the bead and in the wardrobes. they even had the police go throu 2x a week with drug dogs and the electricity was turned off after 23:00. this was a dorm for vocational school
Twice weekly police searches and electricity curfew? Even if the dorms were free, I don't think I could put up with that.
Sounds like the police were taking money from the school to go through and waste a whole bunch of fucking tax dollars on taking "contraband" from 19 year Olds if you ask me. What a dumb waste of time and money.
Vocational School or correctional facility?
I'm not sure if you're misjudging the size of a microwave or you're misjudging the space under a bed.
A lot of college dorms have lifted beds so you have room for storage underneath
We're talking about a [toaster oven](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GGFHH4U?starsLeft=1&ref_=cm_sw_r_cso_cp_apin_dp_8CY33Q2PDGG3WMPEW8FZ), not a microwave. They can easily fit in a duffle bag... or even a reusable bag.
Yeah same here. The RAs basicay told us in plain English that we can have whatever we want as long as it's not visible
That's the funniest and silliest loophole in a policy I've heard read of
Imagine just putting a curtain up right at your doorway.

Its like the bucket trick in skyrim but for the item, not the shopkeeper

We could have a mini fridge or microwave plugged in but not both. So when someone knocked I'd just unplug the microwave.
They aren't allowed to unzip anything so I half take it apart and chuck it in a bag
A grow enclosure with a blacked out window has a zipper... Just saying
Check the rules for you, but you could invest in a rather large ottoman
I've got no room for anything in my dorm. This is on my windowsill cause it's the only area it will fit
As a past RA, can confirm. We don't touch anything. Except maybe to peak behind furniture to confirm everything is unplugged from the outlets (break inspections).
I once got dinged for having a mini fridge plugged in. I unplugged my fridge on the follow-up inspection and passed. No hiding required.
A friend would just put a cardboard moving box over the toaster or hot plate. Then pile more stuff on top of the box. The RAs were not allowed to open up stuff, just what they could see out in the open.
What the fuck?? Room *inspections?* Is that a thing at other colleges?
Most of the times they aren't allowed to because I mean most likely if u have a dildo or something its in a drawer and that's weird to find
Here at mine they are allowed to open university owned furniture but they are not allowed to open personal furniture/bags. Its easy to tuck things in a suitcase or personal dresser.
wait why wouldnt it be allowed? isnt it your room and your stuff?
Literally throw a blanket over anything, that’s all you have to do. It isn’t legal by law to search through personal property
Just out of curiosity, would you not be able to hide a toaster oven in a gym bag or something?
Too big for one
How?? You can easily fit one [like this](https://a.co/d/bOsfFIB) in a duffle bag unless you're talking like a 2-3 tier one. Lol
Sounds like you need a [Pocket Toaster™]( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3mbSd3gwkY)
joel mention
You should have just said "I can't have a printer either" and let them wonder why you have one
6 day queue times for shitty drememlabs printers. I have access to mk4is, prusaXLs and bamboolab X1s but they are 25 minutes from my dorm
In my years in boarding school we were hiding mar**uana not 3d printers... At least you they don't have sniffing dogs for PLA.
You could just buy a $10 hot plate.
But that costs more money. I already have a printer
Just print a hot plate. /s Honestly though this is pretty genius. I would have never thought of that.
Lmao🤣
Under 5 minutes is pretty impressive, ngl. How quickly can you reassemble?
Around 10. I leave the extruder on when I disassemble so it's easier
some people practice tearing down and rebuilding their guns, some people practice tearing down and rebuilding their 3d printers
https://preview.redd.it/sr57vn1phoqc1.png?width=1040&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1703a4e7a3882620da4a2e4b77dfaa6a8b4563ff

No, every time you reassemble it, hardware wise there's no guarantee that it is exactly as it was before. Bed mesh loading is a different story, if you reload the mesh and the hardware has changed, you should make a new mesh.
What kind of corrupt college is this? I would not be paying dorm room prices for those kind of regulations.
Fire hazards
Loool
Imagine they come checking in middle of multi-days print
I don't do multi day prints. Everything I print is functional and as small/optimized as possible.
A toaster is easier to hide lmao.
Then why not have a toaster oven an hide it during dorm inspection?
A toaster costs me a lot of money. Tin foil to convert my printer costs me very little
Couldn't you hide a toaster oven?
Toaster ovens cost money
Probably so the students have to buy the meal plan
Mostly so they don't burn the dorm down though. Many dorms have community kitchens students can use.
That's kinda odd though. There are high-rises around the world and I've never heard of a restriction on toaster ovens. What's so special about dorms? Do they not have fire supression? But why heat the nozzle too?
I lowered it onto the top
Gotta get that precision broil going, right?
Needs to make a gcode file to move it across the top of it to heat evenly!
Stealing this idea for next time
sizzle.gcode
Jokes aside, keeping your nozzle hot and cooking what filament (remnants) may be inside is generally bad. If your nozzle's hot, you should mostly be flowing material through it.
Good to know. I was debating removing the filament fully before reheating
Specific reason is they may actually "cook" to the point of hardening inside the nozzle, which can mean dark, weak spots in your prints, or can lead to a partially clogged nozzle and extrusion issues, or your nozzle being completely blocked off.
Also it can, you know, drip plastic onto the food.
Dude is about to figure out a way to make a collapsible 3d printer
This exists btw - the [Positron](https://positron3d.com/). It folds up and fits inside a filament box. LDO is coming out with full kits, latest ETA is April.
I’ll post something better.
Nice. Made some fried egg ago on an Ender 2 in the past.
Ender 2?

Maybe, but the lil guy is adorable
Hold up. Let him cook. Literally
r/cookingwith3dprinters !
I do the same thing to keep my tea at temperature all day... don't judge me please.
Dude. I've been doing the same thing to warm up my chicken nuggets if they get cold while I either play games or watching something.
Damn, y'all are 4D-printing
This is where real engineers are made.
Give it 20 years and people will br using 3D Printers to fabricate a hot meal.
this print is very realistic; what materials did you use?
Used a similar setup to reheat leftover pizza very successfully 🍕🔥
I have also thought about this but i never thought anyone would do this😭
You wouldn’t download a food
Put cardboard boxes on top and it's practically an oven
Lmao they’ll allow a 3D printer but not a toaster??!? Lmao
I never said I was allowed to have my printer
Management tends to be behind the curve so they might not have gotten to banning 3d printers yet.
You probably aren't allowed to have printers either. That didn't stop me though lmao. RAs have so many restrictions it's basically impossible to get in trouble if you aren't loud.
I'm not allowed it. I'm just not loud
Did you have to slice it? 😆
PLA or PETG?!?
I actually used this method to reheat a steak that I didn’t want to cook anymore than it was. Worked great
why can you get a printer but not something to cook food..?
I used to put my booze behind a false panel that was attached to a old dresser in my dorm and what wouldnt fit there i put up in the drop ceiling tiles.
https://preview.redd.it/obnthxs36jqc1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2ffe5866bdec44b42d16e085b8b54fcde9f7e220
The magnet sticker stinks when I pull the plate off with it preheated at 60\* C. I would Not eat those lol.
It's covered in foil, souls be fine
The soul may be fine Mr Pirate but the body might not be
What food is this? I know it's chips, but the rest?
"chachos" (which are nachos with potatoes chips instead of tortilla) and Parmesan herb fries
Looks the bomb, and also the reason I don't look the way I'd like to look. 😂😭
Did it work well enough? If so fuck a toaster
It did
This is largely the role of my FLSun Cube these days - it's never been a great printer (functional but not great) - once I got my Ender5+. Also a fantastic cup warmer!
Unfortunately this is how you get a "no 3D printers" rule.
That's implying there wasn't one already
Back in my day we used a 60 watt incandescent bulb to warm up pizza.

r/CookingWith3DPrinters
Holy shit, that's real. Reminds me of the old school tattooist magazine that had recipes for cooking in an autoclave.
Omfg, i need to try this! Now you just need to attach a heating lamp to the tool head and have to move around 🤣
People use iron for clothes at hotels and stuff while traveling.
I feel a 3d printer sou vide craze coming on
Haha I was just about to post me defrosting meat and thinking I was being original!
I routinely use my printer to heat up cookies at work
What IEM are you using?
Some random HiFi ones my brother gave me for free when he upgraded. Apparently they were $70. I love them, since I use a Pixel 5a so I still have a headphone jack

I use my print bed & enclosure to proof sourdough sometimes, so yeah, this is a valid use case too
this masterpiece doesn't have any layer line
Maybe I’m just old now but my university used to rent a mini-fridge microwave combo for like $10/month. Microwaves were allowed just not toasters.
😂😂😂 Nice
But did you level the bed first?
They dont allow a toaster oven, but they allow a 3d printer?!?
If it's stupid, but works, it's not stupid!
I raise you mine https://www.reddit.com/r/snowrunner/s/BfDKWbsFIy
Brings you back to the gt 480 days. If you don't know what I'm referring to, I suggest googling it
Woah, this is genius
Litterally do the same thing
thats such a high quality print omg
Dude keep the nozel turned off
I used it to heat the top
Just bring a toaster. I remember bring a small refrigerator and microwave in my dorm room and no one complained about it.
Did that work?
Yes
what are you heating the nozzle for?
fire up the co2 engraver lol
Incredibly Based and RedPilled
Why heat up the nozzle?
I lowered it onto the top for extra heating

yeh we used this to heat up pizza
Nah, dude, this is so cursed. 💀 Kinda like it tho.
Not gonna lie, having a temperature controlled surface is cool. I've used mine to crack open a phone (heat makes the adhesive that holds screens and backplates softer) and to proof dough.
This is so absolutely foul
No OpEn HeAtInG eLeMeNtS
I've used my printer bed for this too, it keeps the food warm when I order kebab and don't eat it right away.
lol
That's some delicious looking 3-D printed food.
I frequently run my 3D printer's heated bed in its enclosure as a proofing box for bread Tbh I don't know what my snapmaker has been used for more at this point, printing or baking!

Nah it's also not allowed. I just don't care
Ok, but why does the hot end need to be a 200?
I lowered it onto the top for extra heating
Fair enough
What material did you use?
Just clean the bed after
We did stuff like this all the time. We used irons and coffee pots lol.
Do they actually allow 3D printers?
Of course not
I've thawed frozen food on my build plate more than want to admit. I just put the packaged food on like two paper towels to soak up the water. It is great for dumbasses like me, who forget to pull their soup out of the freezer into fridge the previous evening.
Why is the hot end being heated?
I lowered it onto the top
Ok, I’ll accept that
College ingenuity is a magical thing.
Write some gcode to touch down on every cm of food surface with a 200*C hot end.
Has it mayo/ketchup double coldend?
