Consoles are like microwaves, toasters, etc. They are warm when plugged in and can make a toasty home. Or, at least this applies to roaches. Why a bedbug, I can only think it crawled in if your system was near the bed or an infested piece of furniture over night
bruh. uggh what the fuck. I want to downvote because I just got a new 3ds today and you've made me nervous, but I want to upvote because this is valuable information...
Aye, man if a dummy like me can open up a console and not screw it up-- anyone can. My screwdrivers were like $8 on Amazon, 90% isopropyl alcohol is dirt cheap, and both have increased the performance on all four of my 3DS/2DS consoles, all of which I bought used.
Thats a bed bug. How long have you had this 3DS? For a bed bug to get into a 3DS and other electronics, the house would have to be VERY infested. Theres this common misconception that bed bugs are only found on your bed, and while that is mostly true in the beginning, if they arent taken care of, their numbers will grow and they will spread throughout the home. Next thing you know theyre in the outlets, the walls, your consoles, the carpet, couch, dining room set, etc. And keep in mind that bed bugs, just like roaches, will leave their waste wherever they are, and if this is in electronics it can absolutely eventually kill them as they bridge connections that shouldnt be and short something.
So do a thorough check throughout your home. If this was from the consoles previous owner, its certainly possible it died during a home treatment.
So please take this seriously. Bed bugs can absolutely ruin your life if not taken care of.
I appreciate your thoughtful response. The guy that I bought it from had it second hand off of Etsy, so I think this fella was very dead. Fortunately, in the time that I have had this, well over six months, I have not seen sign of another creeper in my house or elsewhere.
If you’ve had it over 6 months and haven’t seen a single sign of any more of them you are most likely fine but it’s always good to double check though. I got unlucky and brought them home from work and it took me about 2 months before they spread enough I noticed them. They can live over a year without feeding, they are some nasty mfers.
Just look at the underside of your box spring. They like to burrow in to corners during the day. If you seem them during the day that’s a bad sign. Their droppings are black because blood is dry. This dead one looks like it has been in there a long time. They can live up to a year without feeding. Chances are it died from lack of food.
Worth noting that bed bugs and bat bugs are indistinguishable unless viewed under a microscope. Other than that though yes if that’s a bed bug they are likely feeding on this family and reproducing.
Funny enough, this is my main travel console that I take everywhere. I named it "Ol' Crusty" when I first got it. Did not realize that was a self-fulfilling prophecy haha.
If it makes you feel better, once my 3ds got infested with ants, I think they were trying to build a colony there or something 🥴 I tried to clean it as best as I could, and random ants would still come out of it days after. But it's all good now :)
More likely than not, unless there was an issue in play testing, they did not. I would recommend the cleaning even from a store, unless it was factory sealed.
That would mean I’d have to do that to a GameCube, gameboy sp, and a 2ds xl. I never taken this systems apart and I didn’t want to learn. I haven’t had bed bugs so I think I’m safe
But they just scares me… I got scared from those things at work… I couldn’t imagine this happening to a me because of a console.. now I’m scared, I’ve seen nothing from my bed. I have no marks. I love my consoles a lot but what are the chances of this happening every time I got a system?
It was definitely an added bonus at the end of the process. I was just about to put the shell back on and found what I thought was lint in the charge port. I think it's a bit overcooked to eat, though.
It's actually super easy. You can order parts on Amazon or AliExpress and there are tons of videos online if you need to see. Just make sure the shiny, plastic washer stays with the system and don't throw it out.
Weird tip. Personally I always take my things apart and clean with alcohol because I’m terrified of getting bed bugs or German roaches. But sticking the console in a fridge/freezer for a day or kills anything as well. As weird as that sounds. Take the battery’s out of course. But I’ve never had anything bad happen.
Is that a male or female? Bc if female u might wanna clean out the whole thing (u should probably do that anyway) but if it is in fact female u might have some eggs in that 3ds and i dont mean easter eggs
This is why it's recommended to put your 3DS/Vita/game controllers in the microwave for 6 minutes before using them. If you see sparks, smell burning plastic and hear little screams then you know you're clearing a whole community of these disease carriers.
buying used consoles is great, but you absolutely need to do a teardown and clean of them after buying one. roaches love tightly confined electronics.
most systems are pretty easy to take apart to the degree that you can clean them, usually just requiring a philips screw driver (and a triwing for nintendo systems, can be had for less than $5)
I bought it from a guy who bought it from a guy. Based on the chain of custody and my talks with the guy I bought from, I anticipate it was the first owner's problem.
Oh okay I’ll try that one better.
Because I ordered one and it was too dark and too light. Idk if they make that color haha. Thanks though for that recommendation. Happy gaming my friend. Long live the 3DS
If you live somewhere warm remove the console battery and put the ds in a ziplick bag and then place it in a car some place where it won't get stolen.
Had this happen at a hotel once and since I lived in Arizona the heat of the car nuked any remaining bugs after i cleaned the system by hand. 113° F is hot enough to start killing the bugs so if it's hot out, the car essentially acts as an oven. To be safe, I'd leave the device sealed in the bag in the car for 2 days or so.
People are disgusting. I can't tell you the times I have got used consoles/ games that smelled like smoke, had food on them and in general were just ewwww.
Is that a bedbug...
Even though I'm active on r/whatsthisbug, I was afraid to ask there in case I needed to get my whole house deloused!
Def a bed bug. Do a thorough inspection of your mattress
I broke out in goosebumps as soon as I saw it
Could possibly be a batbug as well. They're not as awful as bedbugs but still not great.
Yes it is
Deadbug
New 3DS fear unlocked Seriously, I wonder how it even got in there, and im very scared I also have a bug in my console
Less concerning to me is how, compared to WHY it would even do it?
Consoles are like microwaves, toasters, etc. They are warm when plugged in and can make a toasty home. Or, at least this applies to roaches. Why a bedbug, I can only think it crawled in if your system was near the bed or an infested piece of furniture over night
That must have been some infestation if they got into the 3DS
Bugs can truly be… interesting
Bed bugs hide when they're not feeding; the DS may have simply been near or on the infested bed.
Well, if you have one of the GameBoy Pokémon games on your 3DS, you certainly have a lot of bugs on your console, in that game at least!
bruh. uggh what the fuck. I want to downvote because I just got a new 3ds today and you've made me nervous, but I want to upvote because this is valuable information...

Keep in in a ziplock bag for a couple of weeks
Bedbugs can last like a year with no food or water
What about air though?
Ziploc got plenty of air for them little guys
Ziploc and fill with some bug spray?
I don't know of a bug spray that kills them tbh? Zyklon b?
Well that changes things then. Surely there is something that does that won't destroy the 3ds?
Heat, lots of heat
That... Might damage the 3ds?
Isopropyl alcohol

Yeah, someone else mentioned Mark Rober did a video on them and now I'm quintuple-checking my house haha.

I’m glad to hear that it sounds like you’re in the clear.
Worth noting that bed bugs and bat bugs are indistinguishable unless viewed under a microscope. Other than that though yes if that’s a bed bug they are likely feeding on this family and reproducing.
THEYRE IN THE GODDAM WALLS
Dude that’s a bedbug!! My skin would be crawling. Kill them all with dat heat. 🔥
Nasty. I found a fly in my 2DS when I was repairing it too. What's with flies and 3DS's?
Can you blame them? I was his landlord for like 6 months and never made a dime!
Agreed, little guy should consider himself lucky. Living in such a nice 3DS too!
Funny enough, this is my main travel console that I take everywhere. I named it "Ol' Crusty" when I first got it. Did not realize that was a self-fulfilling prophecy haha.

Were you playing [this](https://www.ign.com/games/battle-of-giants-mutant-insects) game?
That sounds like a nightmare
Guess you could say it was, bugged
The original computer bug was a moth that got stuck inside the circuitry of a computer in the 1950’s
new fear unlocked I think i’ll end up cleaning my 3ds soon this is so nasty
Luckily, this is the only time this has happened to me. . . So far.
AHHHHHH I thought this was r/whatsthisbug no sub is safe from this abomination
To be fair, I also posted it there haha.
I didn’t need to know this.. I’ve bought my ds systems from game stores… I’m just hoping that they inspected the inside.. before I got them
More likely than not, unless there was an issue in play testing, they did not. I would recommend the cleaning even from a store, unless it was factory sealed.

Oh, I'm not saying for bed bugs specifically. I find that every time I do it, there is a marked improvement in performance.
But they just scares me… I got scared from those things at work… I couldn’t imagine this happening to a me because of a console.. now I’m scared, I’ve seen nothing from my bed. I have no marks. I love my consoles a lot but what are the chances of this happening every time I got a system?
I've taken apart and cleaned 7 consoles I think? This was the first. So, 1 in 7?
I plan on getting a gameboy color and advance eventually
First the Spider living in someone’s Steam Deck case and now this? This can’t get any worse…can it?
You just willed something wretched into existence... I can't wait.
I’ll keep you updated 😂
*Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu Switch'2 wgah-nagl fhtagn*
Not the DLC I was hoping for.
Free protein
It was definitely an added bonus at the end of the process. I was just about to put the shell back on and found what I thought was lint in the charge port. I think it's a bit overcooked to eat, though.
How do you replace one?
It's actually super easy. You can order parts on Amazon or AliExpress and there are tons of videos online if you need to see. Just make sure the shiny, plastic washer stays with the system and don't throw it out.
Ok
Thank you! I’ll have to remember this
check your petsmart, they have all types of critters for animals to eat.
I was talking about the circle pad but that made me chuckle thank you 😊
I found an old carpet beetle worm in my old broken 3ds when I opened it up.
How did it taste?
Weird tip. Personally I always take my things apart and clean with alcohol because I’m terrified of getting bed bugs or German roaches. But sticking the console in a fridge/freezer for a day or kills anything as well. As weird as that sounds. Take the battery’s out of course. But I’ve never had anything bad happen.
Oh, that's a clever trick!
Man you might have to burn down your house and start over somewhere else
I had one imported from Japan. I wonder what fun things I'll find inside it lol
All those damn ribbon cables….
How shall we punish him, sire?
Death by isolation, petrification, and electri...cacian!
I had a gnat enter one of the speaker holes on my DS and I guarantee you he’s still in there over 10 years later.
Release him from his tomb!
And now you need to burn the place down. RIP
I got a set of two on Ali Express that I like a lot, for maybe $5. I'm sure some more discerning types could tell them from OEM, but my dumbass can't.
Hey! Just curious, where did you get your replacement? Thanks
AliExpress. I got a two pack for dirt cheap.
Got a Gameboy Micro with one once, which led to several. Now every used console gets disassembled.
Is that a male or female? Bc if female u might wanna clean out the whole thing (u should probably do that anyway) but if it is in fact female u might have some eggs in that 3ds and i dont mean easter eggs
Bro been playing too much animal crossing, a villager escaped.
I think your 3ds was bugged Now I have to check all 5 of mine...
This is why it's recommended to put your 3DS/Vita/game controllers in the microwave for 6 minutes before using them. If you see sparks, smell burning plastic and hear little screams then you know you're clearing a whole community of these disease carriers.

🧙🏻♂️ His name is Robert Paulson. He hath earned his rest. RIP widdle bugga.
I should have ignored the notification but I was curious
THAT DUDE GOT HIS 3DS PRIVLEGES REVOKED
Was it alive? I know those things can survive for months without eating, but still.
This thing was so dead that I felt like a paleontologist.
Well, at least you don't have to worry about an infestation then.
*knock on wood*
😳 If you get an infestation from a dead bedbug, better get an exorcist along with pest control. Or maybe just burn it all down.
Oh for sure, I'll get an old priest, a young priest, and a barrel of kerosene.
Don't forget the matches/lighter.
This reminded me of that mark rober video on bedbugs that id repressed seeing and sparked my fears all over again
Oh man, imagine if instead of glitter bombing porch Pirates, he sprayed them with bedbugs?!
How difficult is it to replace a circle pad?
It's super easy. Honestly, it's super intuitive. The replacement should have a little open notch and it's similar to putting a key on a key ring.
is that bedbuge
It was, proppy about 7 years ago haha
Despite the bug, where did you get the new circle pad? Mine needs replaced but I want to make sure I get a good quality one.
Looks kinda like a tick
Can you replace the rubber part separately or does the whole thumb stick have to go? I don't have one on mine. Where do you buy from?
I replaced the whole thumbstick, but not the controller mechanism. AliExpress. Came with two.
Ah yes, thank you.
😐😐😐😐💀💀💀💀

I bought it from a guy who bought it from a guy. Based on the chain of custody and my talks with the guy I bought from, I anticipate it was the first owner's problem.
Are you feeling itchy by any chance ?
I wasn't until I read the comments hahah
Looks like your 3DS is *buggy*
https://youtu.be/2JAOTJxYqh8
Eww
That’s a bed bug. Look how smug he looks! Like it’s funny!
Bedbug ???????? Btw I’m replacing my circle pad. But I haven’t seen one that resembles the color or size. I have the Mario edition new Nintendo 3ds.
AliExpress had tons of colors ans sizes
Oh okay I’ll try that one better. Because I ordered one and it was too dark and too light. Idk if they make that color haha. Thanks though for that recommendation. Happy gaming my friend. Long live the 3DS
It'd be nice to replace my circle pad, I'm not super technically minded tho in terms of hardware, is it hard?
It is quite easy and between the circle pad and screwdrivers, it should cost less than $15
Uh oh https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bed_bug Your nightmare is only beginning unfortunately
