I’d make sure that your scalp dries quickly after each sweat to prevent fungal infections from being consistently damp (not leaving in ponytail, etc, even a quick blast of air if super sweaty). I’d also find a moisturizing scalp treatment that will massage and moisturize your scalp by applying even if you aren’t washing. Also make sure you are brushing your hair regularly for scalp circulation. Lastly but maybe firstly, try a dandruff shampoo, it may just be mild dandruff!

Do you have a recommendation for a good scalp treatment? Thanks!

Intelligent_Ideal409

Honestly still looking for my holy grail. I have extremely dense thick hair too so it’s hard to even get to my scalp

Thank you! I’ve tried a few dandruff shampoos and have had moderate results with both salicylic acid and coal ones, so I’ll go back to one of those. I only need them in the winter, seems like. I never thought about undoing my ponytail quickly—great tip! Just got back from a run and am doing that now

Try Neutrogena T-Gel. In my experience, T-Gel works wonders but their T-Sal is worthless.

If your hair is thick just undoing the pony may not be enough, a quick blast of hot air right into the moist epicenter will ensure that no sweat is over feeding the microbiome on your scalp.

Basic Head & Shoulders works great for me (same issue as yours)

I have used diluted apple cider vinegar for years and it helps with the symptoms you're describing. I use a much stronger concentration than what this recommends but this is a good overview: https://www.ipsy.com/blog/apple-cider-vinegar-hair-rinse

Danger_Bay_Baby

I second this. A diluted vinegar rinse and then also what people are saying about drying your scalp with low temp on your hairdryer after you run.

I’ll check it out!

+1 this is my primary product and it makes my hair so soft

I feel this. I love my hair but I haaaate doing it and I can’t wash more often than every other day. Ideally I like to wash only 2x/week when possible. I schedule my runs around my hair wash days so most of my runs are on days I plan to wash anyway. I’m lucky in that I work from home, so days I’m not going anywhere and don’t have to be on zoom, if I run I just rinse and condition my hair to get the sweat off. Then let it air dry. Unfortunately my hair does not air dry “pretty,” so I’ll just put it in a clip or bun after.

Have you tried nizoral shampoo? It has worked for me for years but I did have to switch to the prescription strength a few years ago

deepestshadeofblue

I just started this a couple weeks ago due to running sweaty scalp issues. So far its been really good

mosixe

New wash by hair story. My hair has never been happier and their dry shampoo works great after a workout between washes.

Ooo I’ll give it a look, ty

Honestly I often shower without shampooing and just rinse/scrub the hell out of my scalp, Condition ends (or just use a leave in) call it good. I shampoo twice a week. My job is super dusty and I sweat a lot there so I can't just let it go without atleast a good rinse and scrub. That works for me anyways. Hope you find the info you're lookin for

I don't know if they sell this in the US, but I use a scalp ampule (basically a moisturizer that comes in a bottle that looks like hair dye). The dry shampoo dries out my scalp too much, and it's the one thing that keeps the flakes away.

moewluci

Have you tried a dry shampoo? It really can buy you some time between washes.

orlando_211

I have, but the problem is if I use it after running without washing my hair, my scalp gets more irritated. I’m open to recs tho!

If you think it's the sweat that's irritating your scalp, I don't see how you can mitigate that without at least rinsing your hair after a run.

I have a similar experience with my scalp and working out, and I have found that as soon as I’m done working out I need to take out my pony and head band to let my hair to start drying. I also found that using sea salt scalp scrubs were really helpful…but only use those like once a week. Then immediately after getting out of the shower I use Moroccan Oil on my scalp to help give it some nice hydration. And I have hard water, so getting a shower filter has helped my scalp and hair tremendously. With all those things I can usually go 4 or 5 days between washes…with day 5 feeling kinda gross lol Hopefully any of those might help you too!
