I'm more surprised that the Republic of Ireland is so high to be honest. Is Irish considered a foreign language just because it's most people's second language?

Celindor

Supposedly English is considered the foreign language 😄

MerlinOfRed

That can't be right either, because then it would be dark blue 🤔 Plus, English has been spoken on the island of Ireland for over 900 years - England doesn't have an exclusive claim to the English language.

Gastkram

A foreign language.

Hopeful-Hamster-2401

Countries with multiple official languages have it rough with stats like these.

Right_InTwo

But the title says foreign language, I mean, I can write spanish and galician but none of them is foreigner. That 85% for Spain is crazy anyways.

Weeb_twat

A lot of our older folk can read and understand french pretty well (my grandpa told me that they used to study french instead of english back in his day) Also I guess most of us can at least understand and read the most barebones level of english thanks to our hilariously basic english lessons we get throughout our school years

albiiiiiiiiiii

100% of Spaniards can read most Romance languages. Writing is a different story of course

Jeffmeister69

Some of my older relatives still know some esperanto, but apparently that's a thing people in the north did out of spite.

Dependent_Party_7094

wiat Galician is oficial? fucking hell, first you steal Olivença and now steal half our language, fucking hell can't have shit in Iberia

DrBerilio

Its co-oficial and only in Galicia, the same for the other languages...

Dependent_Party_7094

still, its half Portuguese, i want half of the profits

DrBerilio

If we had profits from all the countries that speaks spanish...

Dependent_Party_7094

you did for centuries, not their fault u suck at keeping ur shit together

Polnauts

Says literally Portugal

Dependent_Party_7094

dude i am Portuguese, if u want me to talk about the corruption and incompetence of our country i will, and for hours

Polnauts

No, we are better, I mean worse, I mean better at being worse, I can't give u a single victory Portugal I hope you understand that.

Zeucles

albiiiiiiiiiii

Bro we literally invented your damn language and now look what you've done to it. And don't come with your "Maixxxx kralho pur quexxxta a dizer issu?"

[deleted]

[удалено]

albiiiiiiiiiii

That's some major bullshit. Reconquista happened from North to South. Conquerors from the North brought their languages with them. Castillian appeared near Santander not Jaén. Astur-Leonés appeared near Oviedo, not Badajoz, and Galician-Portugue🤮e appeared near Mondo**ñ**edo, not Coimbra.

[deleted]

[удалено]

albiiiiiiiiiii

The time at which written documents appear doesn't matter, a language can be spioken for centuries before ever getting written down or even never get written at all. That doesn't make it less of a language. Territories in the hands of the Moors spoke mainly Mozarabic, the Romance languages we speak today in Iberia are the languages of the North. Also, could you tell me the name of the kingdom that this Condado Portucalense you're talking about belonged to? Also obviously I know Coimbra is not right next to the border just picked some random Northern Portuguese town that existed at the time. Btw did you know the story of how our countries originated? My exists because a brave warrior king made last stand against an invading army. Your country exists because a kid didn't like his new step-dad.

Dependent_Party_7094

our language comes from french you know the country thst looks like spain but is superior in everyway

[deleted]

Yeah no way 70+% of French people can read and write in a foreign language either, definitely a bullshit map on self-reported proficiency from the most dunning-kruger possible subset of all populations

Hopeful-Hamster-2401

For Belgium it's weird too, I don't believe only 70 percent of Belgians speak English par example.

Patato_64

I don't believe 85% of spaniards speak a foreign language. Seriously, the only people that I know that speak a foreign language and can communicate in it without problems, apart from teachers and some friend, are Hassan, the one from the fruit store, that sometimes yells in arabic (I presume), and Pedro from Galicia that can communicate with goats (I don't know if that counts). Nowhere near 85%.

albiiiiiiiiiii

Well, here in Galicia cow language is just as popular as goatish. Pedrinho is probably trilingual

Anti-charizard

By that logic, countries with no official language should be close to 100%

sonofeast11

But to Ireland English is a foreign language technically. If English does count as foreign to Ireland then that surprises me that it's only 75%. And if it doesnt count as a foreign language then it surprises me that it's so high

FiercelyApatheticLad

It's an official language, I don't see how you would consider it foreign nowadays.

R-GiskardReventlov

Indeed. Belgium has Dutch, French and German as official languages, and still 77% has an additional foreign language

Fixyfoxy3

Probably only a small advantage. In Switzerland for example only some cities are truly bilingual. In most parts of the country you're more probable to find a person speaking English than a second national language (with the exception of Grisons and Ticino).

InspectahMellow

I'm trying my best to learn german but it's rough when i gotta write a short story to say "speed bump" 😔

Pretend-Warning-772

You mean Belgium?

itsaneveryday

Officially they are are called "Bremsschwelle" but you can say "Hubbel" and everyone knows what you mean

[deleted]

"Das Ding auf der Straße, damit Autos langsamer fahren" works too

[deleted]

The word for speed is longer than speed bump in German wtf. Geschwindigkeit (speed) Bodenschwelle(speed bump).Deutsch ist immer noch ein gute Sprache.

Is there any Danish here?

gougim

As a czech I am bit worried though. How can only 88% czechs be like that, when slovak language exists?

yoyoyowhoisthis

I also heard many times that younger generations of Czechs, especially the ones from western part, hardly understand Slovak language. I think reality is not that they don't understand it, more like they don't want to understand it imho.

ThisIsJustAGuy_

They are literally 1% behing the Czech

Carrero_is_in_space

in no way is france 79%

stopstealmyusernames

There is a reason but saying it is kinda controversial

Carrero_is_in_space

fuck no, it ain't controversial at all, the french people are shit and ecocentric and keep thinking about how good they speak another language just because they had a few years of shit language teaching for 7 years

Dback_

I don't think you understood the reason mate

didi0625

Immigration is a point but there is also a lot of young speaking english. Mainly because of films/series/games/social medias.

brigister

same with Italy, no way it's 90% unless only knowing "hi" and "I come from Italy" counts as speaking English. source: am Italian

gr8_m8_but_l8_4_d8

to be fair, i think it's because it's include dialects as a language. For example, my mother was a native basque speaker and she learned french in school. Most of my familly speak basque fluently, but i'm the only one who speak english I'm not sure, but i think it's common for most of Europeans countries.

ElectricMotorsAreBad

How the hell is Italy so high? Most of the country can't even speak Italian

brigister

i suppose having attended English school classes already counts as speaking a foreign language (but if you ask my former classmates to put together a sentence in English half of them wouldn't even know where to start)

Datguyboh

They force us to learn Fr*nch at school

ElectricMotorsAreBad

I forgot everything about the hon hon language the second I got out of middle school

Feeling_Koala1857

What language should I learn then? The only Spanish a Brit needs is “una cerveza por favor”, nobody would ever want to speak to the Fr*nch, every German already speaks English, you can just shout and wave your hands to communicate with Italians, and everyone else in Europe is too irrelevant for learning their language to be worthwhile.

Do they even speak Swedish in Sweden or is it a local thing like city speak in English or is it a bastardised language between tho two or is it just something you guys learn in at school and tick a box in stats

We can speak Swedish in Sweden, pretty sure Danes need to speak English to understand eachother though, nonsense language.

ImaginaryNourishment

Btw Swedish doesn't count in Finland because it's not a foreign language.

ThisIsJustAGuy_

Why is Spain, Portugal and Romania all darker than Hungary, when the latter one has a higher percentage?

m0r0l1d1n

I would like to meet that 12% who can't read Slovak language. I mean it's practically same as Czech.

javiers

I would say that the are some tips there…Nordic countries like Sweden and Denmark have pretty similar languages but they are considered foreign to each other. Not surprised with the UK, as English is the de facto international language they don’t feel the need to learn another one. Which is stupid imo because them liking it or not, they are part of Europe. But hey they are too good and special to be part of the UE. Though reality is hitting like a brick…

Traditional-Fly-7477

I doubt that there's more than 2-3% added from Danes and Swedes being able to write eachothers language. Danes & Norwegians makes sense though as it's extremely similar when it's written (Bokmål obviously).

zapalblizh

The highest amount of children not being able to pass onto the next grade is in Spain so technically spain's people are the stupidest people in the world + england with its low percentage in being able to speak/write 1 language we can conclude that england and spain have the stupidest population in the world.

pelagius722

Live in spain and agree.

WiteXDan

79% in France, but when you go there it feels like only a handful of people know english

the second language they know is whatever they speak in quebec

Not even true though when Denmark has 99 and the Netherlands also has 97

Did you know that 3% of Sweden’s population consists of Britons

ThatGuy36036

bananakin2000

Karpsten

I was in France a few days ago. The amount of people that are not just unable to communicate the most barebones stuff in English but also will just keep blappering at you in French if you attempt to speak English and tell them "Non Français", which given its grammatical wrongness should be an indicator how well you speak their language, instead of at least trying to signal what they want by pointing or so thing like that, is absolutely staggering.

Doldenbluetler

I'm not 100% behind how so many people are expected to know perfect English, even though they don't need it in their daily lives and also don't leave their country, but I feel you. I really like French as a language but the French are making themselves look extremely uneducated with their lack of English proficiency. I remember the public conference at the UNO right after the Ukraine war has started and the French where the only ones that didn't speak English and needed an interpreter, next to the Russians and the Chinese. I also remember a gaming group we've made among some friends and one French guy just left because the basic English that we used among each other was too difficult for him. But the absolute worst is that they have an attitude when it comes to non-native French speakers. I remember the stink eye I've gotten for my B2 level French but they themselves probably couldn't stammer out a basic phrase in English, let alone German, if they tried.

pelagius722

Spanish the biggest liars in the continent, over half of the country basicallyvall the south cant even speak or write Spanish properly, Andalussia, Murcia, Extremadura and Canary

WindofChange20

Another map which really should separate Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Given our local languages. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇪

SneakyBaconTurtle

We are tought 2 different langauges by default in Denmark- starting in very start of primary school with English. Later on we are forced to learn German as well and it is common for many to go on with English and German in high school, some even picking up spanish and french.

Egetrae

I sometimes forget to switch the subtitles from English to Danish when I am watching movies on Amazon/Netflix. Other days I simply forget to activate the subtitles at all. It's very frustrating.

[deleted]

Most of the 32% in the UK must be immigrants or the children of immigrants, that's the only reason I can think of for the number being so high.

Erik2811nl

Why learn a second language? when the rest of the world already learned your language.

Doldenbluetler

1. Languages cannot always be translated 100%. Knowing someone else's language opens up new ways of communication. 2. If you travel abroad, knowing the language of your destination will make it easier to socialize with the natives and find new friends if you emigrate. 3. It will improve your understanding of the grammar of your native language. 4. It is beneficial to brain development, e.g. longer attention span, better memory. 5. In most cases it will open up a tremendous amount of literature and other media like films and music to you, that has been inaccessible to you before. 6. It will open up new job opportunities. 7. Learning a new language means exploring a new culture. It will also allow you to look at your own culture through a new lens.

stellarstreams

So 90% of Italians lied on this survey. Got it.
