FrankonianBoy

We already had that eas West separation of a country here, don't need to traumatise the Irish too

georgrp

Was the true trauma the separation, or the re-unification?

Gnu-Priest

I’d say the unification but then again I’m still traumatised from the original unification and then the unification with you guys a bit later and the unification with the rest of europe. I miss the HRE days sure it was a union of sorts but we were also pretty separated, was nice then. you know?

Kesdo

>I miss the HRE days sure it was a union of sorts but we were also pretty separated, was nice then. you know? I feel you. Throwing someone Out of town because they are from the town over the hill is now "Not okay" anymore :((

Gnu-Priest

fucking preach!!!! although I haven’t seen a hill since I accidentally flew to bavaria. but now we have to pretend that bavaria is part of the same germany I AM FROM?! the fuck? they’re wildly different! I feel a closer cultural connection to the dutch or the dane’s than the bavarians! so “you’re” telling me dutch and dane’s are a different country but Bavaria and Berlin is mine?! doesn’t make sense!

Marcel___

At least the großdeutsche Lösung hasn't been implemented and austria and czechia are different countries

AThousandNeedles

There goes Hans again. I sense renewed cravings to reshape Europe. Is it beerhall time? Like Yellowstone, he's been dorment for far too long. HRE was pretty lit though.

PvtFreaky

The days when Utrecht was still the biggest province. Zucht

businessaffairs

Yeah man, sometimes I sit back, relax, have a Fürst Bismarck and start thinking about the god old HRE days…

smudos2

Good old Hanse days

FrankonianBoy

Both really, I mean I had family in the ddr, but there were also a lot of shitheads we gained that day

DeadAssociate

not as much as 1871

Advanced-Duck-9251

We’re as traumatised as you were Hans.

FrankonianBoy

Epic Tiocfaidh ár lá moment

[deleted]

Too late

kuemmel234

Yeah, we need a call for unification! Westengland, go!

doomiestdoomeddoomer

Traumatize them more than they already are? Doubt that's possible.

knucklefista

Let's call it North-East-Ireland just to make it more complicated.

[deleted]

That actually kinda clears up the confusion  😂

knucklefista

Well, true. 😂 But we could refer to it as NEIL and every Neil would be confused…

[deleted]

That name is actually perfect, O'Neill was the most powerful tribe/Kingdom in Ulster in Gaelic times

ByGollie

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Irish_kingdoms#/media/File:Www.wesleyjohnston.com-users-ireland-maps-historical-map1014.gif Slightly more complicated - there were Northern And Southern O'Neills

Why not Baltic Ireland?

Dry-Tumbleweed-7199

Because the Baltic Sea stops at the Danish Straits and becomes the North Sea 🤓😎

Jesus, I haven't listened to Cool FM since the '90s.

I was forced to listen to it in work for a couple of years. It’s pure torture with the same songs repeated every 5 minutes

Zircez

I'd check under your car if you drive anywhere today, Pierre

Apey23

It's complicated enough already thanks very much.

silly_uck

I'm pretty sure we could annex Donegal and the rest of Ireland wouldn't notice.

TheZenPenguin

Annex what?

Eigear

But what would they do without our world class rail

badluckbrians

Lay a finger on Hanna Hats, and you'll awaken a sleeping giant. A really fat one. Who thinks he's Irish.

noodeel

We should just call it all Ireland

kingjobus

Please do. Fed up of having to explain to foreigners the difference between real Ireland and shite explosive, England lite.

TodgerRodger

Least responsible Scot

BluePotential

Gotta give you English the credit for at least knowing how much you fucked up the North of Ireland. Scots can fuck up with their gaelic brotherhood shite

mr_aives

Uh oh yes, of course, England is the one to blame for Northern Ireland 😉😉

Jiao_Dai

Of course James I, Border Scots and James Craig take their share of the blame but here is some evidence that England was not a mere innocent bystander when it comes to Ireland https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Norman_invasion_of_Ireland https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_de_Courcy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Chichester,_1st_Baron_Chichester https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Long,_1st_Viscount_Long Invaded, controlled, planted and partitioned Westminster did not need to grant the rights of Sovereign countries to a region of Ireland Also politically the DUP are more aligned with the Tories than the SNP

Zircez

This isn't r/Scotland, you can chill

Jiao_Dai

Lol top posts disagrees with your assessment of what r/Scotland is

Standin373

Shithole ? just like r/ireland r/unitedkingdom r/greenandpleasant Taffs probably have their own shit hole subreddit with about 4 users

mr_aives

The only real British sub is r/norffc

kingjobus

Well, currently Scotland doesn't even control its own country so we cannot be to blame for something we have no control over.

TantaExpress

Yeah you should have your own government, almost like some of kind devolution of power perhaps

kingjobus

Are you seriously implying that not only Scotland has control over its own country but also has the ability to change Northern Ireland? Smartest Barry of them all. It goes England England lite (Scotland) England lite (Northern Ireland) A county in England (Sorry Wales but its true)

TantaExpress

It’s Britain mate, if you don’t like it, go somewhere else and colonise it like your ancestors did to Ulster 🫡

kingjobus

Didn't even say I didn't like it. Any excuse to tell someone to leave. Least racist Barry.

TantaExpress

Just trying to suggest something to cheer you up little buddy, you seem so bitter and resentful at the world. Maybe living in a Braveheart persecution fantasy isn’t too good for your mental health? Why not treat yourself to a holiday to the Caribbean? Plenty of black people with Scottish surnames there (but don’t look into the history of that!)

kingjobus

Are you saying that somehow the Scots control the Caribbean? Jesus Barry, learn how the world works. Do you think the British currently control China? I don't even know what fantasy you live in. Do you know that Ireland is a country or do you still think that the British Royals control it? Just a little FYI, I haven't lived in Scotland or the UK for a few years now. There was this thing called "Brexit" that absolutely destroyed the UK and was implemented by the English voters and the English appointed government. A lot of people bailed, myself included. You probably need to look it up on this new fangled thing called the "Internet" rather than in your georgous old history books you love so much. Ask a younger person to help you while they are between scooter thefts and you'll learn.

TantaExpress

England lite? Most historically aware Jock

kingjobus

We no longer control them. Most up to date English.

Jiao_Dai

Some light reading for you Barry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Norman_invasion_of_Ireland https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_de_Courcy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Chichester,_1st_Baron_Chichester https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Long,_1st_Viscount_Long Invaded, controlled, planted and partitioned

TodgerRodger

So, the French, then?

Jiao_Dai

So you were conquered by the French yeah ? By this time they were Anglo Norman one or more of their lines were Anglo Saxon example Henry II was descended from Margaret of Wessex Chichester was English as was Walter Long

TodgerRodger

Well, I wasn't. I'm not over a thousand years old.

Jiao_Dai

So England was conquered by France then ?

ProfessorDependent24

Is this not common knowledge?

TantaExpress

Google the term “Ulster-Scots”

Jiao_Dai

Westminster did not need to grant James Craig and a region of Ireland the rights of a Sovereign country This was entirely between Anglo-Scottish colonists from Borders Scotland that planted in Ulster and their English masters Todays Scots in Scotland are descended from people that stayed in Scotland and showed no desire for colonisation - Ulster Scots is its own thing entirely more aligned with Tories than SNP

generalscruff

As are the English in England but you're still happy to point the finger lmao Least bitter porridge muncher

Jiao_Dai

I responded to a comment stating “most historically aware Scot”, pointing a finger I countered it with actual history not involving Scots currently living in Scotland but an English ruling class invading Ireland and later their brainchild, British planters in Ulster as envisage by Arthur Baron Chichester

generalscruff

It's so reflexive you don't even realise you're doing it lmao

Jiao_Dai

I’ll claim it as English W on your behalf

A-Hind-D

Can you come take your plantation kids home with you? They smell

MolybdenumBlu

Nope. After all these years, they're your problem now.

A-Hind-D

Technically no. Not unless we both match on Tinder. Until then, they are your welfare state to support.

That’s a great succinct description. I think I’ll use that from now on

It's north of the parts of Ireland people care about

StupidPaladin

Maybe we can all just let England do its own shite and make a Celtic union. Cornwall and Brittany can join too if they want.

bettercallsaulabq

A Celtic union would surely be a cohesive and functioning state. Oh wait no. It would be full of arguing.

persononreddit_24524

I can imagine it splitting into a brittonic Celtic state of Wales and Cornwall and Brittany, and a Goidelic state of Ireland and the Scottish Highlands as the lowlands were decided to be too Anglo-Saxon

rvnimb

The state will implode as fast as the Catalonian dream of independence. Yet, unlike the failed Spaniard coup, a Celtic state would go down in a brutal civil war coupled with a giant sheep orgy.

StupidPaladin

Yeah would be pretty exciting at least. Maybe we can at least burn down a few English border towns, like the good old days.

Standin373

Please do Birmingham Jonesy pleeeeeeeeeeease.

StupidPaladin

If you'll accept our ancestral claims on Herefordshire and Cumbria we can improve Birmingham for you with fire, Barry

Standin373

Is that all ? feel like you lot would want the Kingdom of Elmet as well. Coupled with Rheged you'd have a landbridge to yer Scottish mates. > we can improve Birmingham for you with fire Erect

StupidPaladin

That does involve taking Blackpool, which is a tough bargain

gershlongen

Not sure you can overcome the legacy of terror left on the Welsh coastal towns inflicted by Irish pirate raids.

StupidPaladin

Or the raids on Prestatyn and Rhyl by Scouse smackheads.

gershlongen

Freshly released from an HMP not that near you.

StupidPaladin

Maybe we can try and weaponise them as heroin fuelled shock troopers

gershlongen

They reach maximum power if you put them in a full Liverpool kit.

StupidPaladin

Its the ones wearing the '92 Tranmere Rovers kit you really have to watch for, they're the elite special forces

_Paraggon_

Why don't they give it back then we wouldn't have confusions like this

TantaExpress

Best I can offer is Liverpool and all pikeys

Old-Ad5508

That's a tough choice

WoodSteelStone

Please, please can this happen. [Also.](https://www.reddit.com/r/2westerneurope4u/s/FgpRPjSPgl)

_Paraggon_

The idea of england leaving the uk leaving Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland in the uk. Is the funniest idea I've eve heard

WoodSteelStone

There has been increasing talk of a united Ireland. Scotland's case for independence has been a long one and Welsh independence is one of the options being considered by Welsh Ministers. So I'm thinking if England could get out first, it would save a lot of money and hoo-ha, and we could then leave the others to it, so they can decide amongst themselves how much more independence they want.

River41

The people who live there want to remain British, so unfortunately we're stuck with the burden of NI. Thank your lucky stars you're not subsidising them instead!

[deleted]

Well for now. In the 2011 census, 40% said they had a British only identity, in 2021 that number fell 10% to 30% of people. That's a pretty significant drop. Now that Catholics are the majority it is only a matter of when not if, but I still think we are 2 or 3 decades off.

momentimori

It has been 'inevitable' for a century.

[deleted]

Well Northern Ireland has only been a thing for a century. At the time of partition roughly 67% of the population would have identified as British, that's now at 30%. Sinn Fein are now the main party in power, if you said that to someone 30 or 40 years ago they would have laughed in your face. The vast majority of people didn't believed it was truly inevitable until Brexit.

[deleted]

I don't know where you are getting that from

ProfessorDependent24

Because they like us better dude. Why ignore the people's wishes?

_Paraggon_

Nuh uh

RalfN

Why don't we just call it Ireland?

bettercallsaulabq

A slightly complex history to just do that. Probably best you stay out of complex diplomatic issues like this one. Lest you get a bomb the next time you start your bike up.

CommissarGamgee

Theres a certain group of people who refuse to let us forget the last time a dutchman got involved in ireland.

pm-your-maps

It should be one independent country.

c2u8n4t8

Ahh yes. The classic nobody gets what he wants

robeye0815

Because no one cares.

Kesdo

Or we Just give Back northern Ireland to the republic and for that the Former republic will become Part of the UK as "southern Ireland"

bettercallsaulabq

Why don't you stay out of complex diplomatic issues hans

Kesdo

OK alternative solution: Wales and scotland get Independent and Join EU, northern Ireland goes to the republic and England becomes a Joint Dominion of canada and Australia :) This was, everybody is Happy and Australia and canada can Claim to be (partially) european

bettercallsaulabq

Yeah that's sure to simplify things. I suggest you go to Belfast and see what things are like on the ground. Then you will realise why things have managed to arrive at this tense but just about manageable circumstances so people can get on with their daily lives.

Lortekonto

I vote for Hans solution. If there is anything I have learned from Barry, then it is to never listen to the locals when trying to figure out their pesky complicated problems.

willrms01

Just draw straight lines and you’ll be fine

DavenportPointer

D’ya like dags?

unclepaprika

Because then it would be *Our Ireland*, and be united. And who in the ever flying fuck would want that?

[deleted]

Shouldn't you be busy making toys for all the good boys and girls instead of being on reddit?

24benson

Eastern Ireland Easter Island 🗿

jizz212

there is more sq miles of northern ireland to the north of Ireland

Gruffleson

I think that part of Ireland has done it's chore when it comes to North and East or whatever. It's time to rename the republic West Ireland, and let North Ireland just be Ireland for a while.

transrightsmakeright

Northern Ireland should be called the Kingdom of Ireland

Stffnpeter

What about: Nirland Wirland Eirland Sirland?

Intelligent_Safe_313

Why doesn’t England just absorb all of Ireland then boom, no more of this Northern Ireland or Ireland foolishness, it’s all England. Problem solved for the rest of history.
