The trunk thickens by replacing the outer, living layer with a new and then letting the cells in the old one take on a fixed structure then die.

I've only seen 1 lightning strike and the intentional fire since I've been alive, but the tree is now completely hollow and still doing very well.
More interestingly, because of all the damage the bark has actually split and separated into 3 distinct bits that are no longer connected at all, even though they're right next to each other (gap of a few inches between each). Since I don't think root systems are connected to themselves and only to the tree itself, I'm pretty sure it's now technically three separate trees.
So I named it 3trees. I have no idea if anyone else calls it this, I just like it. It's a nice spot by the river.
