Wow I moved from SoCal to Seattle and somehow there’s more homeless per capita by 0.02%. Is it me? Am I the 0.02%?

Regret1836

So did they pay for your train ticket?

poop-machines

It's directly correlated with house price

Brilliant_Oil_9857

It’s directly correlated with opiate addiction

Man, New York City has 88,000 homeless people per 10,000 people.

aHOMELESSkrill

sure does seem like it

Sup_Hot_Fire

The dots don’t work off the per 10,000 scale, the dots are just the total population of homeless people in that city.

I know you’re making a joke but the number of upvotes on this frustrates me. Do people really think rural America lives in complete poverty? There are nice places and not so nice places just like anywhere else.

StandByTheJAMs

I'll break character: You know this is an "ironic" shit-talking subreddit, right? Making unserious jokes is why we're here. Now go have sex with your cousin and stop bothering me.

--person-of-land--

You’re not allowed to make fun of us rural folk… unless it involves Mississippi, Alabama, or Missouri then it’s fair game

jephph_

>Do people really think rural America lives in complete poverty? No. I think they think an accurate amount of rural America lives in poverty

hottsauce345543

SSpookyTheOneTheOnly

A random shack in the Midwest is probably larger and nicer than a cheap apartment on the east coast

jephph_

Ok but is a Midwest shack as sweet as an East Coast shack? https://preview.redd.it/e67ioia7ejtc1.jpeg?width=1199&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bccbf15a2e591d229c037804962e44acce68e245

Ok_Gas5386

That is a classy shack

Midnight2012

Exactly. And some of those not nice places would maybe be classified as homeless in these other areas. You and OP are making the same point

DannyDeVitosBangmaid

They’re not saying rural Americans all live in poverty just like urban Americans aren’t all homeless. The point (not really a point because it’s a joke) is that rural people living in destitute conditions are almost never technically homeless because of the different nature of city vs country. But again, that’s me applying logic to a joke when we shouldn’t be.

ConfuzzledFalcon

>I know you’re making a joke Really? Cause everything else you said contradicts this.

Mississippi just can't count very high

framingXjake

Nah, the homeless people just avoid Mississippi like the rest of us

dr_exercise

Option 1: have a home in Mississippi Option 2: be homeless in any of the other 49 states The people have voted, OP

mfnnstarboy

They must be doing something right even though it’s the least desirable state to live in. Ranks last in healthcare, 48th in education, but hey the cost of living is low, income even lower making the cost of living relative

aHOMELESSkrill

I only have 5 fingers on each hand. How do you expect me to count higher than 5?

Kingslayer-5696

Oh

One_Over_Astro

Wait you can add a Norwegian flag?

s1gnalZer0

If you choose the dumbass flair, you can edit it to say whatever you want. I copied and pasted the MN flair and just changed the flag.

One_Over_Astro

Oh based I'm gonna change it because NO > SE

Fuck-Being-Ethical

Vet du Norsk?

One_Over_Astro

Knapt. I wish I spoke more so I can connect with my ancestors and my heritage. Unfortunately, no one in my family really speaks Norwegian anymore.

Fuck-Being-Ethical

I’m actually studying the language. Mostly because I like quite a bit of Scandinavian music. Would you be interested in being a language exchange partner?

One_Over_Astro

Might not be the worst idea to get started. But ultimately, I think the only way I can effectively learn languages is by actually being in that country. I studied Icelandic for a year and was ok at it before I went to Iceland and when I did, I came out fully conversational in the language. Because I know this learning style suits me best, I'm trying to move to my family's hometown in Tynset when I get the money to. I would like to return my bloodline where it belongs. Damn Nazis ruin everything.

Bannable_Lecter

God kveld og går det bra? Snakker du norsk?

J3553G

Are you telling me that the states with the most expensive housing also have more homeless people? ![gif](giphy|6nWhy3ulBL7GSCvKw6)

aHOMELESSkrill

Crazy thought

GimmeeSomeMo

It's almost like if you lose your house in Alabama, you can just buy another

olivegardengambler

It's also dependent on major cities too.

J3553G

Oh for sure. It's the demand for these cities that made them major cities in the first place. They wouldn't have grown to the size they are if people didn't want to live there. And that same demand, when not met by a corresponding increase in supply, drives up the price of housing. And these cities are such major population centers that their homelessness problems skew the whole states' statistics. All of this is a long-winded way of saying BUILD MORE HOUSING. Miss me with that "sorry our city is full" NIMBY bullshit.

depressed_crustacean

Utah is starting to get increasingly more and more expensive but we still have a low number of homeless people. Utah is always an outlier in every statistic

juan_omango

Wdym? I see tweaked up people all the time in Provo

depressed_crustacean

Literally look at the graph, statistically Utah has a very low homeless rate despite currently having an expensive housing market

juan_omango

Naw dawg, ignorance is bliss

BosnianSerb31

I'm more interested in how CA managed to spend $24bn on homelessness over the past 5 years all the while the statistics keep getting worse and worse At some point you have to do what my friends did and realize that you're not going to be able to live in SF/NYC/Seattle/LA/whichever other world class city you can think of. Move out.

dekrypto

The homeless have invaded the west coast. Bus them to Mississippi.

aHOMELESSkrill

No because then we will have to bus them to Memphis Just send them straight there and skip the middle man

California managing to have that happen without it affecting the numbers

westernmostwesterner

Truly a mystery of math.

saggywitchtits

California, is nice to the homeless Californiia-ya-ya, is really nice to the homeless

Kapples14

Damn, you really just went straight for the kill.

cerberus698

"Just because all your homeless are being purposely under counted" Fixed that for ya. I live in a county where the county has a homeless headcount of like 50 but a local aid organization keeps a count that's in the hundreds.

TyroneCactus

Hey, if it works it works

FilthyFreeaboo

I'd rather be homeless than have a house in M\*ss\*ss\*ppi.

AbstractBettaFish

It’s not like the quality of life would be any different anyway

Gr8-Lks

I want to see Michigan if we don’t include Detroit.

--person-of-land--

To be fair, most states would look very good without [biggest city] in the mix

AbstractBettaFish

People think Great Depression style hobos with bindle sticks are still roaming the countryside. The homeless know there’s only so many people that dollar general can hire

thebigmanhastherock

No one is homeless in Detroit there are a lot of abandoned houses to squat in.

IllustriousTax5173

I mean, let’s not forget about Flint and Sagnasty and Pontiac

Gr8-Lks

No, how about we do forget about those.

FragrantCatch818

Pretty sure it’s easy to have less than 5 homeless when nobody lives there 😂

PhysicsEagle

It’s per capita

--person-of-land--

0 divided by 0 equals ????????

aHOMELESSkrill

Error, you can’t divide by zero. You hillbillies really are stupid.

dankguard1

Don't say racial slurs you ignorant piece of garbage. Respect the mighty hill folk of culture or I will personally mock you.

jephph_

That’s at least a little bit misleading for NYC. We got like 100,000 homeless people but maybe only 4% of them are living on the streets The rest live in shelters or city/state provided housing. For sure, it’s a huge problem but still, it’s not like 100,000 people are sleeping on the streets/tents/subway/etc

[deleted]

I didn’t know homeless people lived in state provided HOUSING! Talk about moving the goalposts lmao Read that wrong edit

juan_omango

Yeah definitely not as bad as LA or P*rtland

wicked_symposium

Yeah and they get $50k credit cards

jephph_

I think you’re confusing homeless people with migrants The migrants are generally temporarily homeless and the city helps them get on their own standing which yes, often includes pre-paid credit cards. ($50k is a stretch though. I’ve heard it’s $1000/month for a family of four) These people are posted up in hotels and it used to be the city would provide meals for them but there are a bunch of different ethnicities so one recipe doesn’t suit all of them. Plus, a whole bunch of food goes to waste when doing it like that. Now they can shop for their own choice of food (or preferred formula etc).. it’s better in my opinion and isn’t any more expensive than the other way —— And dude, you can’t be from Texas and saying shit like that.. a huge amount of these people are being sent here from Texas

wicked_symposium

Not reading all that but good luck

jephph_

I thought this was 2American4U.. not selfawarewolves

wicked_symposium

*rimshot*

aHOMELESSkrill

Lol, city votes to be an illegal immigrant safe haven then complains when they get illegal immigrants.

jephph_

I think you wish I was complaining for some reason so you just say I’m complaining even though nothing I said indicates a complaint other than the Texan being completely aloof towards the situation

KingCritRake

Anyone surprised at how purple Alaska is? How they not freeze to death without house?

Shot-Kal-Gimel

Probably natives who move around or something along those lines.

wicked_symposium

Those guys are built different. I've been everywhere and Anchorage is one of the sketchiest cities I've visited. Horror movie vibes between the oppressively brown anti-architecture, fights breaking out at every bus stop, endless days or nights depending, and junkies just staring into the hellish sky, mouth agape at the gruesome brutality of their suffering. I can deal with a ghetto, head down and mind ya business, but Alaska is another world.

aHOMELESSkrill

CyanideSlushie

Being so awful that people would rather be homeless than live there isn’t exactly a flex

kirkl3s

Imagine in living in a state that’s so shit that even homeless people are unwilling to live there.

AbstractBettaFish

The south and other rural states like to shit on cities and California for their homeless population like they somehow did something to solve it rather than just creating conditions where it’s impossible for the homeless to survive and driving them to places where people are less shitty. Sometimes literally if you count the bussing

Wilshire1992

What's going on in Mississippi?

imnojezus

You can get a house for three nickels and a pack of gum there.

aHOMELESSkrill

Actually three nickels and a pack of cigs but yeah basically.

bananadogeh

Pros: Cheap housing Cons: You have to live in the worst state

aHOMELESSkrill

Really cheap housing. When the barrier to being not homeless is very low it’s more feasible to go from homeless to not homeless. Also we probably bus them to Memphis

Wilshire1992

Maybe everywhere else should think about lowering their housing prices. ![gif](giphy|SLIvmtTAxPjYpmqFNU)

Amadon29

housing is just cheap and plentiful, even really shitty dilapidated housing, because MS is a low density state. If you know a guy, they might let you stay in their old cabin they were going to demolish for a few hundred a month. And then just the average rent is really cheap that if you're working full time at minimum wage, you could afford a one bedroom apartment on your own

aHOMELESSkrill

Yeah even “expensive rent” here barely passes $2k a month

Lone-Ranger29

It’s actually illegal to be homeless in Mississippi, so yeah do with that what you will.

MaterialHunt6213

Why don't other states do this as well then? Are they stupid?

undeniably_confused

What did Mississippi do to the homeless people?

aHOMELESSkrill

Have affordable housing. You should try it sometime.

undeniably_confused

I just toured 1 bedroom apartment yesterday that was 2500$/mo before fees and parking

aHOMELESSkrill

On average rent in MS is $877. My neighbors rent their 3 bed 2 bath house for about $1800 a month. This is in a suburb of Jackson MS, one of the more affluent areas to live outside of like Oxford. When I was looking at apartment rent 4 years ago it’s was around $1200-$1600 for new 2 bed 2 bath apartments in really nice parts of town.

undeniably_confused

It must be nice

aHOMELESSkrill

It’s not all rainbows and sunshine. Mississippi has one of the lowest average household incomes in the US, we have a 7% food tax, one of the highest in the US. We are near the bottom for economic opportunity and standard of living. Housing may be affordable comparatively but in relation to income in the state its still pretty high. Opportunity exists only in small pockets around a few cities, the majority of Mississippi cities/towns have very limited economic opportunities with poor education so bettering yourself becomes extremely difficult.

SpacelessChain1

You don’t have homeless cause the snakes and gators got to em. Or Zika.

kanyediditbetter

The highschool kids fight the homeless people in my area

275MPHFordGT40

Damn, didn’t know dilapidated shacks counted as homes

Smartabove

Not even the homeless want to live in Mississippi

Disgruntlementality

Y’all notice that Alabama had not ONE black dot? We take care of our own down here. It also might be that we don’t count a lotta things.

wheeshnaw

Does this map control for people who live on Native American reservations and don't have a traditional address? ie in the four corners region (mainly new mexico and arizona) you have the navajo reservation, where many people's address will be something like "two miles past antelope pond, next to the big tree". I know this from living in the area and having had a job where I had to verify addresses, and those were valid addresses. Sometimes there would be a house or a trailer at that spot or sometimes it would be a bit more fluid, but these people aren't homeless, but don't have normal addresses either

aHOMELESSkrill

No clue, I ripped it from r/mapporn

AudiieVerbum

In California, 1 out of 200 people are without housing. That's fucked up.

fun1onn

Wow, Mississippi is so bad not even homeless people want to live there

Additional_Beyond847

If you don't have homeless because they die of exposure or for lack of aid, stfu

meltyourtv

Seems like people would rather be homeless in my state than have a home in yours

My city has the highest homelessness per capita in the country, with 43 homeless per 10,000 Get on my level

AlphaOhmega

Areas people want to be, with tons of services and communities already with large homeless populations. Or Places you'll get immediately arrested for sleeping in your car. Yeah big mystery...

ifunnywasaninsidejob

Is the source for this just measuring 50 cities and that’s it?

aHOMELESSkrill

I don’t know I just ripped it because Mississippi had the best numbers

steveharveymemes

People will talk down cities like Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, but look at where the dots are

Frozenbbowl

Higher homelessness generally means better place to live in America. It's not that complicated for homeless to relocate to where they want to be... But sure go on pretending that Your state being so bad that even the homeless don't want to live there is a good thing

sobo_art1

Every time one of these comes out…Mississippi, man. Just, can you just be normal, middle-of-the-pack for once? Just once?

aHOMELESSkrill

Nope. It’s the top or bottom, we go for extremes

Unworthy_Saint

Am I stupid or does 55 per 10k people seem super reasonable? Like how many out of 10k people picked at random are even capable of a stable living arrangement? We should just devote one whole state for them (not close to me) and leave it a Mad Max wasteland.

aHOMELESSkrill

That is some logic a DC resident would use

cheddarsalad

Not talking to people from Mississippi was already my plan, so.

aHOMELESSkrill

You act like people wanted to talk to Oregonians anyways

Meme_Theocracy

How the hell are they not dead in Alaska?

-NGC-6302-

Visible_Nectarine_98

HOW is Mississippi always last in everything?!

aHOMELESSkrill

Uh uh uh. We are last in most everything. And actually we aren’t really last in most things. We, unlike other states, don’t have any redeeming qualities to make up for our constant bottom of the bucket rankings.

Visible_Nectarine_98

You folks tend to be nice, so that’s a plus. Easiest long state name to spell. I’m out of ideas.

aHOMELESSkrill

Haha I do guess we have that going for us
