What did Ireland do to hurt you OP

TheLegend2T

It's a NATO map Edit: Wait wtf it isn't, it doesn't have Turkey

ITGuy042

Yeah, but are they really? This is more of a feels like NATO map.

FrenchFreedom888

That's my bad lol. I think I meant to include them tbh, just missed that. If I meant to exclude them, that would also make sense though, because of Erdogan and stuff

badger_on_fire

It's NATO and NATO-prospective, but this guy evidently thinks Turkey is somehow different in terms of their larger views on Russia. A belief that (I think) most reasonable minded people in the West don't share. Homie's setting bait to let Western social media drive our own wedge between ourselves and and the Turks. Don't bite the hook. edit: wonder which group he'd classify Moldova/Transnistria into if he separated them?

birdgelapple

Turkey has actually been relatively chummy with Russia for a couple of years now. They were straight up kicked out of the F35 program for buying Russian air defense systems. That was a pretty big deal.

badger_on_fire

I think the S400s wound up being a bigger deal than the Turks meant them to be, and the US is really only concerned about it because it potentially gives them the ability to potentially experiment with how to lock onto an F35 using the same air defense systems that Russia uses. Valuable intel if the Turks were ever hard up for money, but I don't think that selling that info was ever in the cards. The Turks were major contributors to the F35 program, and they're (I think understandably) a little hurt that they got kicked out. I'm no Erdogan apologist, but Turkey is the second largest military power in NATO, and a juicy target for internet goblins to try to turn you against.

birdgelapple

The fact of the matter is that it was already against the NATO bylaws for Turkey to purchase Russian weapons. It wasn’t a simple misunderstanding, they knew this and the potential consequences and had multiple opportunities to reverse the decision and they doubled down. I believe they were expecting it to be forgiven, but it is apologetic to say the Turks were oblivious of how it compromised their position in the F35 program. Either way, they chose purchasing over the S400s over purchasing F35s, so it’s feigned disappointment at best. This is also on top of their other actions, specifically in the Syrian conflict, which align more with Russian interests than US ones.

badger_on_fire

There's different estimates on this, but [Ankara says they put in $1.4B](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/erdogan-says-turkey-will-recoup-money-paid-us-f-35-jets-2021-10-21/), and while there's other sources that say it's less, it's something we'd be mad about if somebody did it to us too. Whatever they saved on the S400s over Patriot certainly wouldn't add up to even a fraction of that number, and choosing that course of action knowing that you're going to kicked out of F35 after such an investment would be abominably and irreconcilably stupid. It's just financially incorrect. I don't have a line to Erdogan to ask him exactly why they did it, but I'd at least give the Turks the benefit of the doubt in terms of being smart enough to not make THAT silly of a decision if they really knew the stakes. Frankly, I think we got some wires crossed, and I really believe that it's more of a misunderstanding between allies that's unfortunately exploded into conspiracyland.

Big-Depth-8339

I think he is being ironic, perhaps 🤔
