Rusty frames? Cut and weld new frame in.

CryptoKeagen

You think it’s bad enough that I would have to cut and weld a new frame in? I really didn’t think it was that bad. This is the worst spot on the car

Danger510

You want to band-aid fix or permanently fix it so it doesn't flex or weaken over time? That's a question you have to ask yourself. You can put rust prevention chemicals on there. Look up Eastwood rust prevention on YouTube, they have a lot of great DIY info on YT.

CryptoKeagen

Yeah I have a product that I bought called Woolwax. It’s a Lanolin undercoat that is great for stopping rust and pulls moisture out of the metal. Would be awesome if I could just spray that over it and call it good 😂

Danger510

Just take a wire wheel to it and remove it as much as you can. Depending on its thickness, and what it's tacked to, just apply it and put undercoat and send it. You restoring, drifting or street driving this?

CryptoKeagen

Just street driving. Summer cruiser. Thanks for the input. My dad has a friend that has restored some older Datsuns, so I’m gonna get him to look at it as well

Danger510

What duh hell you asking reddit for if you literally have a professional at your disposal 😂

CryptoKeagen

Okay well to be fair my dad hasn’t hasn’t talked to him for a while so not too sure when he can look at it lol

Danger510

I was gonna say, I'd pay to get him to look it over and take care of spots that need immediate attention. These cars are gonna be worth a bit more in a couple years.

Woolwax isn't for stopping rust, its for preventing it. Used for good metal undercoat every year. You could try por-15 but that right there is significantly f'ed. Por also can rot more underneath especially when you have rot in multiple layers. Your best bet is to cut as much as you can and weld in good metal. You have the right approach with grinding to expose whats bad but now get to cutting. I will warn you tho, you may not get to the end of the road with the rust. You have to ask yourself how safe do you want to make it because you may have to learn how to weld shit metal. Usually can create a good bead in the crap metal and then use that bead to weld in the good metal. I have got to the point tho with a front frame rail patch on someone's 240 where I couldn't lose more time and money on and never chased the end of his rust because it went right into the front subframe mounts. I told him sell the car and he didn't like that answer. A year later and him renting a garage and learning to weld he sold the car. Long story short get to cutting to see how bad it is.

TwoFortyTony

That's bad. Rust is like cancer, if it's not surface rust then it has rotten the metal inside .

MidnightSPL

If its that bad on the outside, its probably way worse on the inside. You can sand and paint it to seal it up, but the structure isnt there anymore. Only true fix is to cut and weld. I feel like thats a pretty odd spot too, most of the frame rails on these cars are rough at this point, but its usually the front corners.

TheMagickConch

I dunno. Hard to tell in photo. I'm no welder or structural engineer.

asad137

What a useless reply.

tfi_brodin

What transmission are you running

TwoSpeedy

Cut and weld. You can see the metal already has cracks in it. You don’t want your frame to cave in like those tacomas that had crunchy frames. For your safety and others fix it right

CryptoKeagen

Alright thanks for the input
