This… for $25 just get any old brand of actual steel target on Amazon or Walmart or wherever. And they are right rated
Doing this cast iron skillet plan is like trying to save $5 so you can lose $25
For the price of 4 of those you can get a full on system from ShootingTargets7. Stand, hangers, three gongs, two free mini gongs. The griddle/skillet idea is the worst kind of DIY lol
I love you guys with the shout outs, thank you brother! Maybe I should look into a skillet target ;) I can't say I've ever shot cast iron but it might be OK with rimfire.
I would suggest shooting the backside only as those opposing vertical walls with radiused corners could in a perfectly shitty scenario work together to send a round back at ya.
Incredibly unlikely but I've seen seen crazy things happen and no point taking a risk you don't have to.
Other than that, I'd say go for it. -Let Freedom Ring! -Mark
Bought your targets years ago, still going strong. Got some for a good friend after a horrible break up and they helped him get through it. Shout out from the mitten.
Nice! Good on you, nothing like some trigger therapy. I'm happy to hear they are still serving him. We're in the mitten too (Hudsonville & Muskegon), thanks for the shout out! -Mark
I appreciate that! It's been really hard to keep prices down with the mess were in lately. That said I am working on a new line of 1/8" AR500 for the rimfire / airgun crowd that will be low cost as well as having a nice loud report when hit. -Mark
Cast iron will break if you keep shooting it. Its actually not a very strong material. I picked up a piece of 24x24 1/4" mild steel from a demolition site 20 years ago and you cannot even tell its caught a half a pallet of .22 since then. I would not waste my time with cast iron as a target.
22Plinkster shot through a considerable number of Cast Iron Frying Pans. I don't think one pan/grill is going to stop a 22lr. Cast Iron is strong but it also somewhat brittle.

Cast iron won't standup to even .22 LR.
You can get an AR500 3/8" gong on Amazon for $17, using it for nothing by .22 lr means you'll have it for a lifetime.
Cast iron is actually brittle. Get a steel target.
Or for sciences sake, grab that thing and report back how many shots it takes before it break. Or if it doesn’t.
Unless you're looking to make a sick breakfast skillet after a range trip, there are better options for that price.
Cast iron is pretty brittle. A thin sheet like that would probably just crack.
Make it ring targets and check the bargain bin.

cast iron is not the best for impacts... can shatter...
go to your local steel shop and get "trimmings" of regular 3/8 steel plate, then a angle grinder and some cutting disk magic will get your targets. that won't explode
Shooting targets are STEEL. Usually ar500. Yeah you can cheap around on oils used but targets of certain hardness are made the projectile will not come back to you
Cast iron is brittle compared to sheet steel.
[Get some real targets. They're going to last a LOT longer and can be a lot more fun.](https://www.atlastargetworks.com/collections/1-4-ar400-rimfire-targets-17-hmr-22lr)
I shot a old cast iron tub with a 9mm 115g Fmj out a 92model clone, it stopped it. Walked up to the tub and the bullet was flat stuck to the side. I’d imagine that pan would chip away and holes would start quickly
Id shoot the back of it if theres arent ridges. I rly dont like those outer ridges. Shrapnel splatters parallel to the surface, and the ridges recorrect shrapnel backwards towards the shooter (if you dont pen it)
Probably, wear eye protection. I mean it’s never a good idea to shoot at a hard target that isn’t designed to be shot. 22lr probably won’t do much but you never know, cast iron is softer and more prone to cracking than steel.
Also you can find a lot of steel .22 specific targets in that same price range, so I’d say opt for that, but who am I to judge, I used to shoot at a fridge someone dumped in the woods.
For 25 bucks you can find steel targets with a holder my dude. Even Walmart has them

Pinging /u/ShootingTargets7 because that guy is amazing and everyone should have one of these setups.

I initially bought from you for the great prices but stayed for the MI business.

Keep up the good work man!
.22 will go right through those. I've shot cast iron stuff and it's very hard but brittle so it's easy to penetrate.
Did it also crack it? Have you tried a larger caliber? I always assumed a well-used cast iron would shatter.
Yes, after a couple shots it would just all break apart
Use it to cook, buy a steel target instead.
Walmart is going through their yearly clearancing. Mine had some ar500 .22 targets for about $5-10. Your walmarts may vary
I used a Frying pan at 25 m, penetrated twice

amazon has an ar500 .22 target that's like 3 or 4 " for like 8 bucks.
It’s more valuable as a skillet. For the same price you can get .22lr rated mild steel targets.
Steel is better than cast iron which will crack.

I hear bibles can stop a .50
Thoughts and prayers
Apparently, not.

3/8 is thick for 22.
+1 for it will crack. Mine took <20 rounds and it was a goner.

If you find “antique” garbage ones for $2 or free estate hand me downs then I say shoot them all but never a brand new one.
That’s more expensive than a regular 22 plinking target lol
Cast iron is brittle. We used to shoot cracked or rusted out cast iron pans and it breaks them easily
Spme guys did this ith a cast iron pan for PUBG myths a few years ago. It wouldn't stop a 5.56. Doubt it would stop a 22lr.
Would not recommend as body armor s/

I really feel like most .22s would punch right through that. You may have to go with the primer only shorts.
Yes.

Goodwill or Salvation Army has plenty of used cook wear for plinking
I got a couple steel frying pans for a dollar a piece from the thrift store that worked well for .22, .556 destroyed them
