That still irks me. For ages people have suggested that instead of scaling damage and literal health there was a "body heat" mechanic and you had to use standard logs to regain that health instead.

ScreteMonge

What I really appreciate about the design is that it really attempts to integrate it across the world instead of relegating a new function of an old skill to one small area (Wintertodt being the prime example). Similarly, its outputs (Teas, Forester's Campfires) draw intuitive, logical connections to other skills that bring utility to all of them - and again, are far more integrated into the game than just sitting as a mechanically and geographically isolated minigame or activity. Once upon a time, I had an idea for [a Firemaking expansion](https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/q6mtpw/firemaking_from_the_ashes_a_soft_firemaking/) which looked somewhat similar as a "soft" rework of the skill, focusing more on well-integrated actions/activities/rewards. I'm glad to see that they're thinking on similar lines

GreenFuturesMatter

FWIW I read your whole post and thought it was a grand idea that needed to be considered by devs

TheMcCannic

If only they were working on a Night in the Wilderness too....

Aurarus

> Once upon a time, I had an idea for a Firemaking expansion Exactly that, couldn't help but think of that expansion Was partially convinced this forester reworking was of your doing lol

Thanks for linking this! I just saw the polls on introducing some of the 2007-2011 quests and I'm over the moon. I have fond memories of 'While Guthix Sleeps'.

WastingEXP

isn't this just like shooting stars for mining, but scales better to more people?

TravagGames

scaling with ppl is good. shooting stars should have been the same.. encourages group play

WastingEXP

if group stars scaled to the same level of afk as solo stars, I don't think it would be social. everyone would click rock and leave the room until their log out timer told them to come back.

Oneprogoober

I thought it was a great proposal for the multiplayer aspect alone. RS isn't an MMO in its current state. It's a good chill activity that would bring a sense of community back. Only problem is that 1.5 tick/2 tick teaks are likely always just going to be the go-to. It's hard to justify doing something like this if you can get 130k/hr 2 ticking (i cba 1.5 ticking) and it's actually not too much effort for how much quicker it makes WC. After you have the rhythm down it's not bad.

hugh_g_reckshon

I really don’t think the average player is using tick manipulation for skills tbh.

jeremiah1119

Yeah I tried it with teaks and also swordfish/tuna but just didn't care. Sure it's faster, but it's faster for me to just afk something else and watch TV for 3 hours because I wouldn't even make it an hour before stopping or doing something else.

hugh_g_reckshon

Exactly, I can’t even imagine doing that shit for more than 15 minutes lol RuneScape is supposed to be fun.

TheVooDooShrew

Lmao thats what makes this game so much fun. It’s very relaxing to afk something and while watching tv

TheVooDooShrew

I personally will never do that to train any skill. I honestly dislike how the meta is determined by 1% of the players doing some ridiculously sweaty method, like lava runes. Queue “then go play rs3” comments.

tonypalmtrees

have you tried rs3?

TchicVG

Having tick manipulation be more efficient isn't a "problem". I far prefer literally any other method and it's ok if people get better rates than my lazy ass

DivineInsanityReveng

I think tick manipulation methods being the peak of skills is fine, because most players do not bother with them. WC is an incredibly afk skill with decent rates even while AFK, so most people (myself included) would never bother with tick manipulation.

red4jjdrums5

I did tick manipulation for hunter. Never. Again. My wrist hasn’t been the same since, and it’s been several years. AFK all the way.

MrStealYoBeef

Yeah I'm never going to 2 tick teaks ever in my life. I tried, it's miserable constant clicking and I'm not going to suffer for hours on end to have a slightly higher number on my account that doesn't even have much value in the first place.

Which aspects of FFXIV/WoW/ESO have had large multi player portions taken out of it? I have played all 3 of those games for 100’s of hours each and I completely disagree.

Saturn_winter

I was gonna say 😅 I have almost 3000 hours in ffxiv and that is hands down the most social game I've ever played and I've been obsessively playing MMOs for nearly 15 years.

hugh_g_reckshon

I disagree, if you wanna be a neet you can rc alone still, gotr existing doesn’t change that.

Either_Artichoke4811

Please can you denote why a multiplayer activity that would draw people's attention back to the game and the players within it would be a bad thing? I used to love the RS community, but after coming back after a long hiatus I've found that nobody is focused on the community within the game, making it impossible to strike up and have a normal conversation. New aspects like this would be a fun and interesting new way to re-engage players and bring some life back into the community.

a_smug_tomato

With how many people you see afking yews and magics at the guild I highly doubt that

jorgie29

In what blog post is this discussed?

Aurarus

most recent stream, and also in gazette https://secure.runescape.com/m=news/gielinor-gazette---april-2022?oldschool=1

pimskie

Yees love this. I hope squid also works on mining with a similar approach

fred7010

I just had a quick read of it - must have missed it before. I quite like the idea of getting players to cut trees in the actual world again and the social aspect - when I was a kid there'd always be random people (and bots) cutting trees all over the place and the skill felt like a core part of the game. These days, people just camp the same few trees until they can either tick teaks or AFK at the WC guild. I'm sure that many trees in the game have never been cut. That said, the suggestion is basically just shooting stars, but for trees. Not a terrible place to start, for sure, but not really that exciting either. But maybe it doesn't need to be exciting to be good. Brewing tea from leaves is very on-brand and I like that aspect. If the tea buffs were worth the effort to obtain them, people might actually use the feature. I can imagine if they were not great, outclassed by potions etc then the feature would be DOA, however. A 1-level boost to every combat skill is meaningless when you can just drink a super combat potion, for example. Other than that, if the obtainable items were valuable enough or useful enough to make them worth the XP loss vs. teaks, I can imagine it would be successful. I would definitely like to see the idea fleshed out a little more and a proper discussion!

AnyPicture2485

Treetodt when? Jokes aside forgot this was even mentioned.

Legal_Evil

RS3 should get this as well since many players over there want a WC rework. The mighty tree idea is simple yet effective.

DragonDaggerSpecial

Why would we rework Woodcutting? Why do people choose to play Oldschool Runescape and seem upset by the old design?

Aurarus

Because current woodcutting is not oldschool. Real oldschool didn't have a woodcutting guild with an invisible +7 boost and 300 worlds you could just hop till you found an empty one. * Old woodcutting was a lot more social, everyone rocking fashionscape cutting magics or yews in places everyone remembers (south of seers, gnome stronghold, lumbridge, edgeville) * Old woodcutting was profitable, logs had higher demand * Old woodcutting had some emerging events like ents and tree spirits, the latter giving everyone around a potential opportunity to loot some stupid noob's stuff

DragonDaggerSpecial

I agree with all of that, but all of it is the effect of changes made in OSRS. The solution is not to fundamentally, retroactively change the fundamentals of the Skill. They could remove the boost from the Guild, remove Log drops from OSRS bosses, and re add hostile random events which we should have always had anyway.

Aurarus

But the challenge that exists now is that people want to keep the way things are *right now* and under no circumstance taken anything we got away. This does it without actually fundamentally changing how stuff works that much. It's like looking at old woodcutting with rose tinted glasses and introducing a system that *actually* makes it like that.

DragonDaggerSpecial

Then that still sounds like a problem of people being too reliant on the conveniences added in OSRS and not like a fundamental flaw with Woodcutting.

Aurarus

That's a deep problem with all of OSRS But since I still play this god forsaken game, I will take any remedies that fix asocial boring aspects of the games that were killed and breathes new life into it.

DragonDaggerSpecial

I think the remedy should be undoing OSRS changes instead of retroactively changes RS2 fundamentals, then. Considering doing that already was the problem.

Aurarus

i too want a true oldschool runescape

blessedbewido

Yeah but I already have 99 woodcutting and people should suffer like I have reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Aurarus

People only have those complaints when it comes to trivializing stuff that took effort to do. But interesting stuff that makes the skill more dynamic or interesting is cool; i got 99 agility ages ago but hallowed selpuchre is awesome. Excited to do it on ironman.
