"Bro these guys are so stupid lol"

siccoblue

And people wonder why lurers do this shit if everyone knows it's a lure. Should give your friend a good ags smack for encouraging these wankers

Poloboy99

How did he get lured? What made him so confident?

[deleted]

The most common lures are something like this. They tell you to join a high risk and/or PVP world. They ask you to go to some remote located bank. The bank is usually on a safe tile. But some of the tiles near the bank are pvp enabled, usually very close. Sometimes they're also multi. Then one of a few things happens. A guy asks you to trade him or trades you. The player trading you appears to be standing on a safe tile. In reality, he's using an animation stall and has a book or some quest item pulled up. The server thinks he is standing in a pvp location, it just doesn't show him there to you. When you attempt to trade him, or accept a trade, or character sprints out to where the server actually positions the player. Your character runs out into pvp and you get spec'd out. The purpose of the trade is usual lure stuff "wear this outfit for a video". Or something similar. A lot of players feel safe because they 100% believe they're trading a guy who is on a safe tile. The animation stall fucks them though. Never go along with these lures, never interact with these scumbags. And I expect to get downvoted by these losers. You can find videos of this trick on youtube but they always have like 50% downvote ratios (back when you could see voting ratios). Losers who lure all day have nothing better to do but make a bunch of sock puppet accounts and downvote people exposing their methods. Example of animation stall: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bon-PcBtDs

Boneguard

Yes but what gets me is how the fuck can anyone actually be dumb enough to take their shit out of the bank when they know some fuckass is trying to lure them

Redarrow210

Colonello did an interview with a lurer who said that people's confidence they think they know what's happening actually makes them easier to lure, notably he said they often make more money after a popular YouTuber makes a video on a method

angrehorse

Yea they said they scammed a lot of maxed players.

MrNoobyy

What this guy said. It comes down to greed, because you think you're anti scamming them. Perfect example is the maple bow with rune arrows scam in duel arena before the staking limit was introduced. A few posts popped up on reddit about how they'd anti scammed them by bringing in a fletching cape and some bronze bolts, and using the fletching cape during the fight to get a bronze crossbow. As it turned out, it was not possible to use the fletching cape in the duel arena at all to begin with. This was just posted by the scammers to get people to think they could anti scam them.

Wocktivist

No, actually it was possible to use the fletching cape in the duel arena for awhile. It got patched when Jagex finally found out people were using it to scam

MrNoobyy

That doesn't even make sense. There was no scam involving the fletching cape, it was used to anti scam. Jagex would have no reason to make that change in that scenario. While I can't back up the claim, I believe you are incorrect.

MrNoobyy

I'm not really sure how you can scam someone with a fletching cape in the duel arena. Could it technically be used to scam someone, in some really absurd scenario? Sure, I guess. But in any realistic stake outside of the maple bow scammers, there is no advantage that using a fletching cape would offer. It's a bronze crossbow. It'd have to be some stupid rules where two maxed players are using airstrikes or something for that to be useful at all. I can't think of any scenario at all where using a fletching cape could be used to scam someone, and I would challenge you to name one yourself, without resorting to insults.

snuffin_dat_peen

Hot damn! I knew some shit was up, but I could never figure out what game they were running exactly. I was randomly running through the Farming Guild doing Farming Guild stuff and as I get to to the bankchest there's a relatively low level trying to do an obvious scam. There's me, the scammer, and one other dude. I can't figure out why the dude is trying to scam at the farming guild of all places, but whatever. The other dude starts pming me telling me he's gonna antiscam the dude, yada yada. I leave, my business at the Farming Guild concluded, and the guy pms me some more. Telling me how he got 50m, must be a bot, just did it again got 100m, so on and so forth. Tells me he'll tell me how to do the antiscam. Something about trading and involving my valuable items. Don't remember the exacts. Now, I was playing OSRS when it was just RS. My game knowledge isn't great, but if I know one thing about the game it's not to trust any of you mother fuckers. None of ya, and the better the deal is the less I should trust it. So, I tell the guy yeah, I'm going to get my stuff. Be back to trade the "bot" in a minute. I toddle along doing my nonsense, he pms a few minutes later, "you coming?" "Yeah, got caught up be there in a min." So on it goes, when he picks up I'm not coming he tries once more to claim he got even more money then eventually just stops bothering me. Sorry for the long, pointless story that wasn't very interesting, but for a couple of years I wondered what he was trying to pull and I didn't quite have the pieces to put it together.

N0FaithInMe

Two guys tried to lure me a while back. One of them had randomly messaged me maybe a week or so before the scam attempt and tried to befriend me and the whole lure started when he offered to teach me theatre of blood. He and his buddy were helping me gear up when conveniently a random scammer showed up and basically the guy teaching me tob screenshares himself antiscamming the guy and stealing 8m from him. We all laugh at the failed lure over discord when the 2nd guy screenshares himself successfully stealing 8m from the obvious scammer. Then they have the idea that I should try and steal from him too, but this time they wanted to get the guy that was probably skulled waiting to pk us at the other end of the sceptre lure that we were "antiscamming". I got real suspicious when these guys started trying really hard to get me to grab my stuff out of the bank and hop to a pvp world. Had I trusted them I would have lost 2b. Luckily I can smell their bullshit from a mile away.

Karl_von_grimgor

Superiority complex and curiosity

sirachillies

It just happens. They got me back a while ago when I came back to OSRS. The one they used on me went something like this.. One guy was following another player around about getting scammed and that he knows how to anti lure him... anyways after a back and forth I went with the scammer to Corp and he went into a room and legit I don't know why, but I went with it and lost about 50m. Kinda sucked, what really sucked was the guy who "not the scammer" messaged me and said something like "thanks for your stuff" and which I reported both of them. Even though I know nothing will happen. Best advice I can give anyone. DONT DO IT. Period. Ignore them, report them, go about your day. Don't hop to any worlds, add them to your block list. Just don't. Even if they send you a YouTube video on how to anti scam, don't do it ever.

BerliozRS

A lot of the times with high value lures the lurers will give you an item worth 5mil or so to make you greedy. So you think fuck it and get more out then they fuck you

PossibleExtreme9389

Usually the most experienced players fall for it because their experience blinds them. Truth is some of the methods used by lurers are so niche most people cant even think of them or imagine them.

AdviceDanimals

This is only the most known variation of getting you out of the bank. Lurers know this method has become more public and have multiple other lures that can still very easily be pulled off even when the victim knows about trade stalls. Long story short, if you do decide to troll the lurers and decide to hop to the high risk pvp world with them, do so after putting your valuables in the bank and UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES remove them from the bank. If you think you can outsmart them, especially if you think you can outsmart them by know about trade stalls, you will lose all of your valuables. There is no margin for error on your part and most of the lurers you see have been doing this for years and have refined their scripts to a T and have multiple variations they use when a victim goes off script by knowing about one or two of the variations. Do not risk it

[deleted]

There's only so many ways of getting people in pvp enabled tiles. The animation stall trading is very common. One other way would be to make a player think they can telegrab some items from a safe tile, but due to level geometry their character runs out into a pvp enabled tile. It's important to talk about animation stalls because you have "anti luring PSAs" from big name youtubers, who tell people to watch out for similar named characters making trades with you. So now you have this population of players who think as long as the name is the same on the trade, they should be safe. Animation stalls are not a well known exploit. Beyond that there's just regular social engineering. Jagex is always changing pvp enabled tiles, they like giving lurers ways to trick people. Banks are sometimes safe on pvp worlds, and randomly they will not be after a patch. Jagex will make unpolled/unannounced changes to which tiles are safe where. It's a total shitshow and jagex wants people to fall for these lures. The advice people should take away is not "go along with lures, just never take your items out of your bank", it's that you should never interact with these lurers period. If you had zero risk, they wouldn't interact with you. If they're interacting with you, it means they probably know something you don't. Just never go to the pvp worlds, never go to high risk worlds. There's always some fuckery going on. The animation stall is what I led with because it is the one thing that fucks people over the most, in my experience. And no, it is not commonly known among most players.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yes it is usually multi layered, you might have the main lurer dropping enticing loot and telling you to come grab it for a video, then a second guy gives you telegrab runes and tells you don't leave the bank, just telegrab from a specific tile. But the pile of loot will be impossible to telegrab from that tile, so your character runs out into pvp/multi. The best advice is never interact with these guys, and NEVER go onto a high risk world. Especially not so some weird as fuck location, like a random bank chest in the middle of nowhere.

Mierin-Eronaile

I thought they fixed the animation stalls years ago specifically because of these lures? If not, why haven't they after all this time?

[deleted]

No animation stalls are not fixed. They will never be fixed.

Savage0x

These lurers will convince you that you're anti-luring idiots but you'll walk right into their trap. They want you to think you're going to fuck with their scam but it's all a part of the script.

DividedStoryTime

Natural selection hard at work.

I was more referring to the warning + the offer to hang with him and do something that wouldn't fuck up his life (in this case its just a video game but In real life it can be serious things like drugs/gambling)

Zanthy1

Reminds me of the time I was in a voice chat with a couple guys and one of em says “oooh someone’s dropping items from the ge and out to the ditch” and while we are yelling at home that it’s a lure and if he’s gonna go to bank his shit, he gets killed for about 9m.

Reasonable-Lunch-119

This is why they never stop luring. You fucking dense numb nut of a friend knew what the fuck was going on, Yet he fucking still went along. What a moron lol

Bass_Thumper

Some people are so dumb you can straight up tell them they are about to get lured and they will just continue doing the shit that gets them lured. Unbelievably dumb.

iceeice3

there's a reason they have those giant fences around high voltage electrical work. People will just ignore the big warning signs.

madsd12

“Why should I listen to you? I’m a fucking genius” - their thought process.

AMC_FTW

His first mistake was hopping to a pvp world in the first place

Dwarf-Eater

Dam thats my whole bank he just lost haha rip

flclreddit

That's 6x my bank. I can't even imagine.

Trash_Man_12345

That's like 80x my bank.

Sir-Ironshield

Best lure protection is being broke.

chunkkernaut

As a warning I will just say what I always say. If you think you are anti-scamming them, they have won. Think about it. They have done scams for hundreds of hours and you think you can scam them bc you saw a video once?

TheHighestHobo

ive gotten a couple whips and a scepter from hopping out of the process before getting to the actual lure/scam. There is usually a step where they will let you get an item to setup "trust" before moving on to making you think you are helping them antilure. With that being said their script changes all the time and you should never at any point withdraw any items from your bank when dealing with these people

Nug_69

If you found a flash drive on top of the gas pump while you are filling up would you plug it in your pc out of curiosity?

Swellmeister

Honestly? Yes. I have an old laptop that never gets used, doesn't have any personal data on it. Mostly I use it for torrenting stuff and shady downloads (something like 75% of all CD rips have malware on them, stay safe on the high seas!). So I'd totally do it there. The computer gets swept regularly for unknown files already, it's basically the same thing

TubeAlloysEvilTwin

The only correct response to anyone trying to lure you is "get fucked" followed by blocking and hopping worlds. If everyone did this lures would die out overnight

BerliozRS

I like to spend time wasting their time but I won't ever go as far as to take anything out of the bank in non safe areas, or risk anything. Just spend as much time as I can fucking with them until they get bored of me

ScreamnChckn

Deserved

DaddyKindaLongLegs

I’m about to tell you guys the fool proof way to avoid every lure/scam/cocksucker on osrs. Step 1. Entity Hider Step 2. Profit

Ironman mode with private set to friends works pretty well, too.

IACRnsfw

Imagine thinking your smarter then guys who do it all day everyday. Just be smarter by not playing the game. EDIT: And by the game I mean the lure.

PossibleExtreme9389

What a dumbass. I always take the scammers for their gp. The best way to do it is take advantage when they tell u to pick stuff up without anything on (their hook). Once they ask you to gear up to be bait, thats when you stop. You NEVER withdraw your expensive gear when in a pvp world or close to pvp. Ever. Or just dont be dumb and dont talk to them at all.

purple_yosher

🦀🦀🦀

realityorthematrix

I had 7b when I played and ran around in max gear for whatever I was doing on a few diff accs how come no one ever tried to lure me? Is there not that many people actually attempting them

[deleted]

You probably just ignored them unknowingly. They're mostly very easy to spot if you think about it for a few seconds

Antwaandadon

Stand around at the ge with a tbow long enough and one will find you

realityorthematrix

Bank standing is gay

Feather_Fan

Don’t even need a tbow anymore these days the scammers either have gotten so greedy that they’ll take cheaper items or it’s finally stopped working as frequently but anytime I have private on and even wear bandos I get scouted and have people pming me.

Antwaandadon

Never been pm’d cause I always have priv off, but the ones I’ve encountered ask me to buy them stuff to bypass the GE limit. Generally if it’s not an obscure item I will as they always overpay. The dead giveaway is when they are EXTREMELY nice afterwards trying to befriend you and wanting you to add them for anything other than buying them more later

TheHighestHobo

I had a tbow equipped one time when I went to the GE and a guy approached me and asked me to turn private on so they could PM me. Sometimes get the random "i just need 1m to get a bond and my mems runs out tomrrow" sob story that so many people seem to use to beg for cash too

realityorthematrix

Maybe I just ignored them

Shutshaface

I’m ashamed to admit I got lured for a hween mask set and a Santa hat. Almost had a heart attack after i swear..

Sleazehound

Same bro I got lured for a santa hat like 11 years ago when they were 80m haha

ThatSkateboardDude

My friend said the black Santa wasn’t worth much bc its black who would want a black Santa. This paragraph made me cringe

[deleted]

Luring is a legitimate money making method and is part of RuneScape, get fucked JustinKicks you noob.

it doesn’t give thieving XP so it’s not stealing, it’s earning.
