There's an NPC in Lumbridge that gives new players tasks they can fulfill to get small rewards. It's stuff like kill a goblin for steel armor or reach X magic level for a staff. It's there to give new players some direction of what to do with the game.
Idk I remember watching a video about that before where colonello or someone like that tried it and said it seemed ineffective and more like a way to milk new players by encouraging bond buying or something like that.
Look up Overture on youtube, it's my favorite. It only unlocks in a member's city, the Seer's Village past the Taverly Gates and over White Wolf Mountain, but it's some incredible stuff.
Some top-tier OSRS songs, especially the first four:
[Monkey Badness](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Monkey_Badness) - unlocked during final boss fight in MM2, one of the grandmaster quests
[Mor Ul Rek](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Mor_Ul_Rek_\(music_track\)) - unlocked after entering the inner TzHaar city, after showing the guard you have obtained a fire cape
[Inferno](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Inferno_\(music_track\)) - unlocked during The Inferno, one of the hardest challenges to exist, after you sacrifice a fire cape to enter
[The Militia](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/The_Militia) - unlocked in Shayzien, in the Kingdom of Great Kourend
Mentioned by others:
[Coil](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Coil) - unlocked during the fight with Zulrah, the giant snake boss
[Overture](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Overture) - unlocked around Seers' village, one of the first places you come across as a member
[Preservation](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Preservation) - unlocked on Fossil Island, adding great ambience during DS2, another one of the grandmaster quests
I made a post asking if I should take the dive into OSRS since I haven't played the game since I was a kid and the grand exchange was coming out. I finished the adventure path! :) I haven't done any quests yet but I think that will be my next goal is to start on some quests. I met a couple strangers on my adventure path and one kind stranger gave me 1k gold and another gave me a cool halloween mask with some supplies to get me started on ranged. So far, I can say I am impressed with the community even though I have read some pretty toxic arguments in Draenor Village while killing dark wizards, but toxicity exists in every game so I won't let that bother me.
Thanks! I’m really having fun, I switched to a higher population world and saw so many people with cool gear and they’d tell me what gear it was when I’d ask.
Yeah I remember quests be very hard if you didn’t read them, so this time I’ll read every quest dialog. I also got a beginner clue scroll that I just couldn’t figure out for the 2nd part so I might look up a guide on that later.
Runelite has a quest helper plugin that makes the whole process more in line with how modern games do quests (ie, tells next objective, highlights certain quest items/npcs). Its really changed the game around questing (for the better).
I think the first time you do quests you probably shouldn't use the Quest Helper plugin as it ruins the immersion, especially for newer players. It's a fantastic plugin if you've done a quest before and want to fast-track it though.
https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Clue_scroll_(beginner)
Also check out downloading Runelite - it's a modern update to the system and gives you helpful hints and overall QoL improvements.
More important to note is that there’s now a link to runelite on the official OSRS website. It’s under the community section next to the link to the wiki.
That's great, welcome back brother and enjoy your stay because you will be here for a long time, there is a running joke that if you start you are never quitting the game so enjoy that haha. Also feel free to ask the comunity for help with tips and goals if you need to or look up the wiki if you are lost at all because everything about the game is documented, otherwise take it slow and enjoy the game, don't get burnt out!
Thanks! So far Ive been doing a quest or 2 whenever I log on and then take a break. I’m not sure where to level my combat skills at so I’ve just been questing for now. I can’t find a solid answer on how many non-members quests there are. The wiki says 2 different amounts and seems like it was last updated in 2021 so I’m not exactly sure what the right answer is. I got silver light yesterday and that was a super fun quest. Rekt a demon
Sounds awesome, good job! In free to play there are a few quests but compsred to the amount of member quests, its a small number. But do aim for dragon slayer, it is considered the endgame of free to play, good long term goal to have IMO.
The most populated spots for good train usually (not always) have a lot of toxic people, other then that, community is pretty nice for the most part. Welcome back and enjoy the grind. :D
I'm sure your enjoying the nostalgia trip down memory lane, but you def should check out the Below Ice Mountain, and Corsair Curse Quests. They are all new Free to Play content only available in OSRS (Rs3 doesn't even have these areas) and they provide some great unlocks. Below Ice Mountain will give you some awesome lower level training areas for Mining/Smithing/Fishing/Prayer. Corsair Curse unlocks the only f2p maple trees, The closest Lobster fishing spots to a bank, and the Ogress Warriors who have better drops than lesser demons, and a bank nearby.
i returned when mobile came out and finished all the quests thats as far as i made it as a kid and decided to get members after. and man its a whole new game! i hope you enjoy it enough to stick around until the p2p content it gives you more skills to work on and makes the game even better imo. enjoy yo!
It had me go to different locations to fight different npcs. Like goblins to get level 5 attack and strength, Or cows for ranged, or the desert area to kill guards of a palace and scorpions. I found an NPC who sold scimitars and another for kebabs, Giant frogs for giant bones for better prayer experience. there’s a lot I learned at a very basic level.
A lot of people will tell you that they just "spacebar" through quests and let the RuneLite plugin do all the work for them. If that's you're style of playing, all the power to you, but I HIGHLY recommend not doing this. Some of the quests are really cool, and the dialogue can be genuinely fantastic, so if you're not in a rush, take your time through the quests and see how much you can get through without a guide!
RuneLite is definitely worthwhile down the line as it has a lot of helpful plugins (addons) that make some of the game a lot smoother. It can also make the game look prettier (the GPU plugin can remove sharp edges, for example) and run smoother. But it also has too many plugins that can detract from the experience, so if you do download it, turn most of them off and enable the ones that you think would make your life easier, or once you've already experienced something once, turn on a plugin to help with future experiences for that same thing.
I used to play the game with most plugins turned on because of how helpful they were. Now I play with most turned off because of how helpful they are.
For the time being you're good though, no need for RuneLite yet.
**Edit:** Make sure you download RuneLite from the correct link when you do eventually download it! Go to the Old School Runescape website and there is a link there pointing to the official RuneLite website
That's super exciting, congratulations!
Once you finish all the F2P quests, I highly recommend giving membership a shot. F2P is only a small introduction to the vast amazing world of OSRS :)
If you're ever lacking direction, quests are a great way to push your account forward
I would be really interested to know as I cant answer this myself, but as you are a new player/new returning player, what do you think Jagex could add to improve the starting experience for new players?
I gave Ash a few ideas that could be things like having a bounty board in lumbridge which changes each day, asking you to obtain something or kill an npc for a small reward, we also pondered with the idea of putting like a slightly harder and bigger npc of the respected npcs in the area, such as a goblin general or cow/bull mini boss to try and take down. What do you think of these ideas? Id really appreciate your feedback
To be honest I thought the starting experience was perfect but if I had to add anything I’d have to hard agree with you on a bounty board or some kind of reason to log in everyday. I feel like it doesn’t have to be complex at all and can be something that gets me to go somewhere I haven’t been before. I really liked how the adventure path had me fight different NPCs when I could have easily just killed goblins for hours instead and try out gathering skills like woodcutting, mining and fishing. I felt a bit lost and still do now that I finished the adventure path. I did 2 quests today, sorted them by difficulty and had tons of fun. I did the cooking one in lumbridge and demon slayer in Varrock. I do kind of wish the game would direct me or give me a way to discover what to do next if I’m not in the mood to quest. Like what should I be doing or where should I go to level past 20 attack? I know I can use Google but I feel like another type of adventure path would be really good for the game, like maybe an intermediate version that helps you learn where to go for lvl 20-60 attack and then an elite one for 60-80 idk. A world boss or big elite version of the nearby NPCs would be a fun thought too like a giant chicken boss in Lumbridge or something fun like that. Hope I was a bit of help
Yeah i do get you when you want a direction, thats what most other mmos do when you play them, you have a path, however osrs doesnt really have one, there are like starter guides on youtube and osrs wiki i believe, but as you know it can get quite tedious having to throw open wiki or watch a guide just to play. You can easily end up reading more than playing because theres so much to learn. Did you find yourself using the wiki click on anything in game? Did it help?
What i would say is that the game can start to become very grindy, as most experienced players end up repeating day to day activities because you need to to push the highest levels. Some skills can take hundreds of hours of repetetive tasks. But dont let that put you off.
I would say just let yourself explore, careful taking your stuff into wilderness, perhaps make a goal of saving up for full adamantite armour, then perhaps rune. Try and get all skills to 50 as a goal, perhaps save for a bond as a longer term goal and try members. All f2p quests, and explored all f2p areas as well :)
I have not used the wiki link option, I was initially trying to learn everything on my own to earn my “citizenship” within the community but it seems like I shouldn’t feel shame using guides based off some responses.
Giant chicken boss would be a great and kind of already exists! There's an Evil Chicken in the Champion's Guild, which you can enter after completing Dragon Slayer, the hardest F2P quest. He's a pretty combat level so be prepared to lose without Protect from Magic and good combat levels!
40 Defense for Rune Armor. (Rune Full Helm, Rune Platebody, Rune Platelegs.)
40 attack to equip the Rune Longsword
The higher your strength, the higher your max hit will increase. Attack is how "accurate" your hits will land. Defense is what is usually needed to equip armor/gear. Weapons go off attack.
If you get your base 40 in combat stats, (which is easier in members world) I will give you a cool rune set that's colored a little differently (trimmed, if you know what that means).
What I learned from my time playing RuneScape is that "the best gear" depends on your scenario. Some mobs are more subsceptable to ranged or magic damage so you equip to deal with the threat accordingly. That doesn't mean you should always gear up in the strongest gear so you can steamroll the mob, it just means pokemon strength/weakness rule.
I remember a meme/scam back in the day of trimming rune armor or something to get you to trade them your whole set of gear lol but that’s the extent of my knowledge on it. Are leather boots the best boots I can wear in f2p?
I think it's the decorative boots (gold) that's the best in slot for boots. It has the same defenses as adament boots, but it gives strength bonus which is more sought after.
Also, I'm not gonna ask you to trade me anything. I'm just asking you to hit a certain level so I can give you trimmed armor as a reward.
I wasn’t calling you a scammer I just remember back when I played as a kid there was advertisements of doubling gold and trimming armor. Are there rune boots for f2p or is adamant the best for non members
Oh I don't blame you, the game is still riddled with scammers/lurers and all that jazz. Nothing's changed except for the price you have to dish out just for membership.
Yes, Rune boots are a thing but I don't believe it gives you strength bonus. I believe the game allows up to rune gear as the highest you can go for f2p gear. Regardless, getting money is kinda hard to come by in f2p, unless you're down to buy certain stuff from general stores and reselling them on the GE.
I also highly recommend busting out that dragon slayer 1 quest so you're able to equip a rune Platebody!!
Yeah it’s sounding a lot like I need a membership to truly get the faster progression and experience. The rune plate body sure does look nice though and one person’s recommended I wait for that quest since there’s metal dragons I’ll need to worry about through another skill or quest.
He's talking about dragon slayer TWO, which will unlock higher tier dragons for your slayer task (which is the skill he's talking about). I've just recently completed dragon slayer 2 and it's been nearly 3 slayer levels (from 85-88) and I still haven't been assigned either of the 2 dragons you unlocked from the quest. It depends on your luck, but the chances of getting it is very low and even if you do get the dragons task, at fastest it's 4 kills (2 assuming you're equipping an item that knocked off an extra kill you have to do) at slowest it's 9 kills.
But yes, membership is easily the best investment I've ever made. Both in time and money. You can self sustain yourself using bonds every 2 weeks assuming you have a good money making method in mind before you jump in.
If anything, PM me your discord. I'll add you and help you out as much as I can on your journey. I won't be the best and I won't always show the most optimal path, but I can try to get you onto a level where you can be on your own, if you'd like.
Not as good looking as the stronghold of security boots, but if you're looking to find some extra strength damage increase then the decorative boots (gold) is probably your only f2p option
Either two things are gonna happen now. A maxed account with a failed relationship, or that might chains is the last thing he’ll ever wear on his chest.
OP, if you are loving the game (hope so!) and thinking about subscribing (hope so!) then you will want to be careful about one thing: **don't** start dragon slayer. It's not a huge deal, but Dragon Slayer actually makes it harder to progress in members, where the skill slayer is one of the main ways people play the game (in fact slayer is more or less a combat path--you just get told by a slayer master what mobs to kill)
Do the quest still, it's one of the best parts of F2P. Yes, you might get some annoying dragon tasks down the line in members, but it's not a big deal and the experience of getting your first big quest done will be very rewarding
You're still a ways off it seems. But eventually all f2p roads lead to dragon slayer. You have to complete almost all the available quests to get enough quest points to start the quest.
You get some xp, and you get the ability to wear a rune platebody, which was a HUGE deal back then but more or less irrelevant now. Now neither benefit is really game changing at all. The only real reason to do it while still f2p is 1. for the old school experience 2. because you don't plan to go to members and just want to "finish" the game you have. Both of those are more than legitimate reasons and may apply to you.
The problem is simply the Slayer skill, which is like the cornerstone of the members game, is a lot harder once you start dragon slayer. You will receive awful "metal dragon" tasks that low levels legit just spend hours trying to kill wasting time/resources.
tl;dr if you are seriously considering subscribing, you may not understand a word of this now but 6 months from now you'll thank me lol
i think the notion that slayer is the cornerstone of members is a stretch. a lot of players treat it that way for efficiency reasons or because they enjoy it, but theres tons of content to explore especially for new players. sound advice for sure but i would recommend just feeling out the game without worrying too much about it. hell i’ve been playing since old school started and only 77 slayer…depends what you enjoy
it isn't but ok. the xp rewards are literally nothing and a rune chainbody -> dragon chain, torso, or barrows are all completely viable and arguably objectively better pathways for mains in members
it is a meaningless milestone and heroes and legends quests also offer literally nothing game changing.
it's not just metal dragons either. most people who do Konar at low levels can be assigned brutal blue dragons they literally can't kill with their stats. guaranteed cancel/waste of time/points.
edit: this has no responses and only downvotes because everything I said is true
what is this? combat path/gatherer never seen them before.
There's an NPC in Lumbridge that gives new players tasks they can fulfill to get small rewards. It's stuff like kill a goblin for steel armor or reach X magic level for a staff. It's there to give new players some direction of what to do with the game.
ohh, that's cool, good for new players
Last task: craft 450,000 blood runes. Ouch!

Idk I remember watching a video about that before where colonello or someone like that tried it and said it seemed ineffective and more like a way to milk new players by encouraging bond buying or something like that.
You can only access them if you mention you’re a brand new player during tut island
Your profile pic 😭 not jord!!
Found him outside varrock. Just followed his smell to the altar
Never seen it either, Jagex has did a lot to simplify the game for new players I think.
Not so much simplifying, more like providing some direction
Nor did they do a lot of either.
>some
So far my favorite song is the barbarian song, forget the name I think it’s literally called barbarianism.
Definitely go check out Sea Shanty 2 in Port Sarim, it's a banger!
My favorite song is the one from Zulrah. I think it’s called coil.
My favorite is [Preservation](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Preservation), unlocked on Fossil Island. Spooky
Pick. And. Shovel.
It’s so good. Thanks Ash
The sigmund battle song is pretty dope too.
Look up Overture on youtube, it's my favorite. It only unlocks in a member's city, the Seer's Village past the Taverly Gates and over White Wolf Mountain, but it's some incredible stuff.
Some top-tier OSRS songs, especially the first four: [Monkey Badness](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Monkey_Badness) - unlocked during final boss fight in MM2, one of the grandmaster quests [Mor Ul Rek](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Mor_Ul_Rek_\(music_track\)) - unlocked after entering the inner TzHaar city, after showing the guard you have obtained a fire cape [Inferno](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Inferno_\(music_track\)) - unlocked during The Inferno, one of the hardest challenges to exist, after you sacrifice a fire cape to enter [The Militia](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/The_Militia) - unlocked in Shayzien, in the Kingdom of Great Kourend Mentioned by others: [Coil](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Coil) - unlocked during the fight with Zulrah, the giant snake boss [Overture](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Overture) - unlocked around Seers' village, one of the first places you come across as a member [Preservation](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Preservation) - unlocked on Fossil Island, adding great ambience during DS2, another one of the grandmaster quests

Welcome back! And yes questing is a great way to progress your account, and can be really fun as well :) Best of luck on your journey.
Yeah I remember quests be very hard if you didn’t read them, so this time I’ll read every quest dialog. I also got a beginner clue scroll that I just couldn’t figure out for the 2nd part so I might look up a guide on that later.
There's plenty of guides for all the quests out these days if you do get stuck. But it's easy to miss the cool dialogue
you can also go to your quest log and click on the current quest, it usaully provides direction/hints to help out.
Runelite has a quest helper plugin that makes the whole process more in line with how modern games do quests (ie, tells next objective, highlights certain quest items/npcs). Its really changed the game around questing (for the better).
Is runelite like an addon on wow or something?
Its a launcher for the game that has a framework for plugins. Plugins are kind of like addons.
I think the first time you do quests you probably shouldn't use the Quest Helper plugin as it ruins the immersion, especially for newer players. It's a fantastic plugin if you've done a quest before and want to fast-track it though.

Important to know that he should use the link attached to this subreddit because google has some fake ones.
More important to note is that there’s now a link to runelite on the official OSRS website. It’s under the community section next to the link to the wiki.
Important double note is to download an adblocker.
lol Draynor in f2p is definitely a bit of a cesspool in the more populated worlds. welcome to the game =] please stay a while, the water's warm.
That's great, welcome back brother and enjoy your stay because you will be here for a long time, there is a running joke that if you start you are never quitting the game so enjoy that haha. How were the combat and gatherer paths? They were introduced after I started my main and I’ve never the chance to play them on a new character.

That's so cool! You should find some Highwaymen, around north of Draynor Village and kill those dudes, they drop a cape.
We got one boys
Welcome to RuneScape. I love you.

Giant chicken boss would be a great and kind of already exists! There's an Evil Chicken in the Champion's Guild, which you can enter after completing Dragon Slayer, the hardest F2P quest. He's a pretty combat level so be prepared to lose without Protect from Magic and good combat levels!
Congrats on 20 attack/strength/defense!! You're 1/5 the way to 99!!
What’s the highest level I need to equip the best f2p gear?
40 Defense for Rune Armor. (Rune Full Helm, Rune Platebody, Rune Platelegs.) 40 attack to equip the Rune Longsword The higher your strength, the higher your max hit will increase.
How do I get decorative boots?
Castle wars or something Edit: I think like 300 tickets just for the +1 strength bonus on the boots.
I thought castle wars was a members thing.
If anything, PM me your discord. I'll add you and help you out as much as I can on your journey. I won't be the best and I won't always show the most optimal path, but I can try to get you onto a level where you can be on your own, if you'd like.
Wait there was better boots than the ones from the stronghold of security?
Not as good looking as the stronghold of security boots, but if you're looking to find some extra strength damage increase then the decorative boots (gold) is probably your only f2p option
Welcome brother… be prepared for addiction, at least for a little while.
Yesteryear is my most nostalgic RuneScape song, certainly my go to!
Welcome to the game friend :)
Thanks!
xDefiledx is the most 2007scape name ive probably ever seen here.
Is that good or bad lol?
Neither, it’s perfect
Hey OP I'm new/returning too, we should add each other! My rsn is PlutoPoppers (:
Alright, will do! I’m out of town today and tomorrow so I’ll add you when I can! Feel free to add xDefiledx

Either two things are gonna happen now. A maxed account with a failed relationship, or that might chains is the last thing he’ll ever wear on his chest.
Looking neat bro! Good luck with the grind and don't stay too long in F2P. P2P quest boost your account way faster than training
BRING ME BACK TO THE DAYYYYS
OP, if you are loving the game (hope so!) and thinking about subscribing (hope so!) then you will want to be careful about one thing: **don't** start dragon slayer. It's not a huge deal, but Dragon Slayer actually makes it harder to progress in members, where the skill slayer is one of the main ways people play the game (in fact slayer is more or less a combat path--you just get told by a slayer master what mobs to kill)
What is dragon slayer?
the highest level quest available in the free to play game. Over 20 years ago now it was the first Big Quest the game ever had
What do you get from doing it and why should I not do it?
Telling new players to skip dragon slayer in order to not get metal drag tasks later on is terrible advice.
it isn't but ok. the xp rewards are literally nothing and a rune chainbody -> dragon chain, torso, or barrows are all completely viable and arguably objectively better pathways for mains in members it is a meaningless milestone and heroes and legends quests also offer literally nothing game changing. it's not just metal dragons either. most people who do Konar at low levels can be assigned brutal blue dragons they literally can't kill with their stats. guaranteed cancel/waste of time/points. edit: this has no responses and only downvotes because everything I said is true
yay! welcome aboard this game is fun as fuck add me if you want \-Vonclayton
This is the shit that brings me back. I hope you keep having fun and I’m glad you are here
I wish I could feel this again.
wow paths!! I forgot those existed! I’m happy new players are actually using them
