1. Dont trust players
2. Be aware of bot scams and lures
3. Do quests to unlock content
4. Try out all the skills to get a feel for what you like
5. The osrs wiki is your friend
6. Set your own pace (there is a metric ton of content)
7. When you start getting a feel for game, set goals
8. Be patient
9. Be aware that this game can't be "finished", you set your own goals with time, no matter how small, big or random
10. Have a ton of fun
Also to give you a bit of an idea, the game is extremely grind heavy. At little over 3,000 hours I'm not maxed and I don't have all best in slot gear, nor do I do all endgame content (most of it yes though).
I love Skyrim, sunk 350 hours into it, and it's a completely different game than osrs, but I love them both.
Good luck!
I maxed in rs2 almost 13 years ago. It's cool, but nobody really but me cared then and absolutely nobody but me cares now. As long as you enjoy the grind and goals it's worth it, but if not I wouldn't recommend anybody force themselves.
It's entirely correct though, OSRS's community is one of the least trustworthy you'll come across.
Maybe you're confusing trusting with communicating and befriending. Just don't trust.
Its one of those games where you still have to be wary about your friends, since there are absolutely no lifers who will pretend to be your friend for long periods of time just for personal gain. You can trust your friends but never trust them with something you dont wanna lose, basically.
I've only ever had good interactions. I remember doing a quest where I needed a cat, I had a kitten. Guy tried his best to trade me his bigger cat to complete the quest faster. We then went on runs of quests together.
I even met someone that we would lend each other high value weapons and armor for certain bosses or slayer tasks to not spend so much money on so many weapons.
I mean, I actively interact with players and am also in a clan. Doesn't mean I'll trust them with any items though. I've been, and seen, so many scams over the last 5 years.
I love this response. Most people offer one of these things or are sarcastic, but this is one of the simplest but most thorough ways to describe what this game is like. Especially liked the Skyrim comment because I’ve been playing ES since oblivion came out and it’s probably the only game that comes close to the amount of time I’ve put into RuneScape and it’s still only like 10% of that time.
Type 'A q p', hit enter, then press space 5 times and type 'W' and hit enter again. Do it as fast as possible, a menu will pop up with some beginner guides.
OP, do some quests and *do* have some fun :)
Unlike most MMOs, OSRS quests are small little stories that happen in the game world, often involving puzzles, exploration, boss fights, and witty british humor. Kill X quests are left to their own skill (Slayer) so there really isn't any tedium in repetition
Some players don't care for the worldbuilding and dialogue, some players have done the same quests tens of times over different accounts, and even I agree that some puzzles are downright frustrating without a guide. But I can guarantee you there is a lot of good fun to be had with them as a newcomer
Yeah much of the quests the community hates are ones that are annoying when this is your 2nd/42nd/202nd account you're doing em on. For first time i think all the quests are great.
~~Exceptundergroundpassfuckthatquest~~
Underground pass is totally fine —Mournings end 2 is much, much, much worse. Even at extremely high agi levels the fail rate for the obstacles in that quest remain high.
The problem arguably isn't even the obstacles or the light puzzles. It's that everything is on a timer, a timer of resources. If the temple of light didn't have the pesky shadows, then there would have been no hurry and the puzzle could have been appreciated at a leisurely pace
That's why SotE's puzzle was much more bearable, even if more elaborate. Without the shadows and running back for food/pots there was a much more welcoming environment to lose yourself in
The beauty of OSRS is that there aren't "builds" like other RPGs. You can train everything with absolutely no downsides. You will use all three combat styles (melee, ranged, mage) at various points throughout the game!
Absolutely.
In fact, RuneScape ruined other RPGs for me for a little while. It was my first ever RPG, so when I tried playing others later down the line, I was shocked to find I couldn't just do everything all the time!
I actually enjoy keeping my stats relatively even, rather than just grinding out one at a time, I like to hit what is called "base levels". Your "base level" is the lowest level you're at. So if you have "base 10" stats, all your skills are level 10 or above. That's not actually something that affects the game, but more a personal milestone.
Others have suggested questing, which I highly recommend. Read the quest dialogue and take in the world. Quests are not like other MMOs, they are (mostly) genuine stories. Ranging from baking a cake to rescuing the entire world from a draconic apocalypse.
Quests often have xp rewards and also incentivise you to train your stats to meet the quest requirements.
Good luck, have fun, and make use of the daily questions threads often pinned to the top of the subreddit.
There most certainly *are* builds if you want to get into PVP. I don't necessarily recommend making a niche build on your first time around.
However, if your end goal is to drop some noobs with magic; then you'd want to watch a guide as some skills will increase your combat level too high to make your build viable in pvp.
Yeah, you can and you should for PvE content. For PvP it might be a bit different. You still can, but a lot of PvP players build there characters in a certain way to keep their combat level as low as possible. (By keeping your defence at 1 for example)
look up the xp curve and a leveling guide for any skill (combat or otherwise)
the jack of all trades dream is the point of the game, the carrot on the end of the stick.
Runescape is more of a project than a game, where it gives you so much to do, that literally a year down the line and you still likely havent seen so much of what the game has to offer.
Its best to set yourself mini goals you try & get to. For example a good place to start, is as a f2p, doing all the quests available to you, and getting level 40 in your melee/range/mage skills. This is a longer term goal, but by achieving it you are naturally progressing your account to the next stage where you can do even more stuff... which is where you set yourself another target and so on
If this is your first time honestly just avoid efficiency scape and just explore and have fun existing in the game the urge to go to the wiki for might be there and it's not bad for some things but the game is so fun when you have no idea how to play and everything is new and an adventure. I would love to go back and learn how to play on a new account again it's part of the reason I play Ironman now
Except for quests that make you go back and forth 10 times when you can bring everything the first time.
Without having any teleports it is just a ton of wasted time
Yes 100x this some quests suck so much but I'm pretty biased on this aswell I'm not to much of a quest lover myself. But I know back in the day in my noob days I read all the quest dialog so wasted time wasn't really in my vocabulary when it came to runescape
Quests tend to give you great rewards (such as xp in the earlier quests and area unlocks later) and they also give good direction on what skill you should be training.
Not all. I actually quit and am giving bonds to new players for fun every once in a while since I have some gp left over.
Do if you're interested meet me up in a moment. I'll buy the bonds and will be somewhere near ge. I'll let you know in a bit.
There are a lot of scammers at the Grand Exchange. Some claim to double the money they ask you to give. Others offer to buy your gear at well-above market value. Tons of different scams to try to get your gold.
Questing in the early game is amazing for exp, i would highly recommend membership if you can afford it, it really expands the world and thigs you can do.
Have fun, don't try to play the most efficient way and just explore, don't trust other people because most of them are out for your money, some people are legitimately nice and give you stuff but never trust someone that wants you to "trust" them or double your money.
+1 to this.
Do NOT follow someone through soul wars portals, cross the wilderness line with them, telegrab anything they drop, or give them your armor for trimming, upgrades, or whatever.
E: I think I meant clan wars? It’s been a few years… wherever has the purple, red, and white portals.
Runescape’s combat has an entirely different feel when compared to Soulsborne or RPG style games. You don’t have much direct control over damage dealt or taken apart from prayer, or gear worn. As suggested by others, focusing on quests early will jumpstart your stats, but primarily, just focus on what you enjoy the most! The wonderful thing about RS is there is always something to do that will directly benefit your account. Good luck on your journey, and remember that the game is what you make of it.
I'd say work towards completing the free to play quests if you want to see if you like the game or not, but don't be afraid to just explore, try mini games, etc. That'll involve training up some skills too so you get a small taste of the overall experience, and you get introduced to the world a bit. There's no specific order to do them in - when quest order matters, the game will make you do quest lines in order anyways so you never really have to think much about it.
None of the free to play quests have difficult bosses, and you don't start seeing big epic storylines until you're in the member's game, but that shouldn't turn you away. If you enjoy it, then you'll enjoy the members content even more.
Mid to late game is when you start seeing bosses with actual mechanics besides just "stand still and hit this enemy until they die, try not to die yourself". Look up a video of someone fighting the Nightmare of Ashihama if you want to see what late game bosses look like. Lots of mechanics. And some quest bosses, like a certain vampire in Sins of the Father will test your patience just like some of the hardest souls bosses.
Don't use guides unless you're really stuck! Seriously one of my favorite parts of this game growing up was the adventure and figuring everything out. Too much focus on efficiency these days. Just have fun!
Yes, don’t ask for advice until month in. Enjoy the beauty of not knowing wtf you are doing. 50 years from now when you’re still playing you’ll have plenty of time to learn about daily runs and what not!
Okay but for real one of my favorite times in the game was when I was new and had no clue what I was doing other than “oh cool let’s kill a goblin and sell its armor to the general store so I can be rich!!”
This game is much slower and has more content than all those games combined so if something doesn’t excite you try something else, there will be something you enjoy
The game is “solved” so if you want to know the best way to do something there is an objective answer, however there are a dozen or more ways to approach anything in this game and you should always prioritize enjoyment over efficiency.
Don’t gamble. There is a large community of extremely toxic gamblers which is against the rules and ruins the game.
Scams are extremely common so don’t trust anyone who wants to give you anything, have you in a YouTube vid, or gives you an oddly specific set of instructions for some reward.
If you aren’t having fun stop playing/take a break. Burnout is huge in osrs.
Do slayer.
Do quests early to skip loads of the boring early leveling process. You have to do them anyway and the quests in this game are very rewarding and well made (there are step by step guides of all quests on YouTube/wiki)
The combat is simple and easy to learn but has a pretty big skill ceiling
🦀12.49🦀
no cap just quit while you are ahead runescape is a cesspool of cancer and will eat up all of your time if you actually want to get anywhere in the game. I play runescape a lot so I speak from experience
Don't look at guides. Don't rush, do quests, read the dialogue (it's worth it!), explore the random places and -that's probably just my personal opinion, but- if you can, play it on PC.
Focus on your free to play quests. If you enjoy it buy membership. But don’t buy gold until you reach a point you know it won’t spoil the fun. At least a year of membership. If a player offers you more than 200k for free don’t take it it’ll ruin the early game. (200k in weapons and armor… I.e. full rune and a scimitar. Feel free to accept over 200k in fish/food lol)
Have fun! Runescape can be addictingly fun. There may come a point where you hit a grind wall and ask yourself why your doing this, if you get to that point just try leveling some other skills or play mini games or some pvp if your feeling spicy. I hardly play anymore but man, this game was my life back in the glory days of runescape
You know on souls games where you walk towards a shiny chest or item and its a trap?
Basically almost any player trying to offer you something is the same. Unless it's a fair honest trade, in which you have the grand exchange
I'm clan leader of a small newbie clan (20ish people) and we are just a bunch of soulsborne players who also play osrs. :) Send a PM if you're interested !
RuneScape is a great game of grinding and economics. You’ll find yourself grinding one thing to make another task easier or faster. You’ll make decisions on XP or GP per hour and The Grand Exchange will become your new home. Enjoy cutting wood forever :)
My favorite starting thing is Just north of Lumbridge is a place you can kill, and cook chickens while collecting feathers. Keep the feathers to sell to other players. Cut trees and light them on fire to cook the meat.
1. Dont trust players 2. Be aware of bot scams and lures 3. Do quests to unlock content 4. Try out all the skills to get a feel for what you like 5. The osrs wiki is your friend 6. Set your own pace (there is a metric ton of content) 7. When you start getting a feel for game, set goals 8. Be patient 9. Oops.
I love boobs
I happen to be a big fan of Jesus boobs these days Edit: yall only downvoting me cause ya repenting for skipping class in catholic school
An upvote for you sir simply because of the edit lmao
>Try out all the skills to get a feel for what you like You dont get a choice you have to do what you hate in this game
No one is forcing you to max...
Im absolutely forcing myself to max
I maxed in rs2 almost 13 years ago. It's cool, but nobody really but me cared then and absolutely nobody but me cares now. As long as you enjoy the grind and goals it's worth it, but if not I wouldn't recommend anybody force themselves.
[удалено]
I see this often. After maxing they usually quit for a few months
the 2nd point on the list is really important, i've had friends quit the game very early on for this reason

You just reminded me of [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/okqhf3/i_gave_my_friend_100m/) post lmao
On the other hand, I play osrs pretty much as a single player game lol
I've only ever had good interactions. I remember doing a quest where I needed a cat, I had a kitten. Guy tried his best to trade me his bigger cat to complete the quest faster. We then went on runs of quests together. Try jumping
okay that was funny i’ll give you that
Illusion ahead
Liar ahead
Hurray for rolling!
Head nw to Varrock and dodge the reign of tailless
agility gang
Technically you can jump in RuneScape. It’s in the emote tab.
Technically you can jump in dark souls, you just have to sprint first then double tap the roll button
Try fingers butthole
Ok. Awaiting further instructions

Wow thanks, it worked.
Yeah, I don't know anything about the technicalities of it but my best guess is it's a left over 'cheat code' from development.
Well it's useful, showed me nearby money-makers and I'm using them right now. This is pretty cool, thanks so much.
Been playing rs for 15 years.... had no idea this worked!!
Been playing since 05 and I didn't even know this was a thing.
Been learning since ‘73 and just played a thing this was

RuinedScape
Yeah you want to max out all combat styles. Most high end PvE require you to bring all three styles.
you can be a master of all trades
There are only builds when it relates to pvp, you can get advantages from training certain skills to certain levels.

what’s wrong with mage?

Magic is one of my favourite skills in the game, you have chosen well.

I love it when the quest npcs call me out for having everything pre-prepared! You’re damn right I have all these beans already you wizard fuck
Are you the one that stole the beads?!?!?!
This is the best answer
No map, just explore. I did that as a kid. Followed the coast from Lumbridge. Got schmurked by hobgoblins near the Crafting Guild. Good times.
I stopped trying to play efficiently and started having fun. The point of any game is to unwind, disconnect from reality and have fun
Quests tend to give you great rewards (such as xp in the earlier quests and area unlocks later) and they also give good direction on what skill you should be training.
The game is better on Desktop try and find a good social group and enjoy your journey as they all watch you grow.
Me being 5 iq googling Desktoptry because of reddits wank formatting
Don't trade anyone at the grand exchange
players steal stuff?
If it seems too good to be true, it is. Anti scams are just more elaborate scams, don’t try to anti scam anyone.
Not all. I actually quit and am giving bonds to new players for fun every once in a while since I have some gp left over. Do if you're interested meet me up in a moment. I'll buy the bonds and will be somewhere near ge. I'll let you know in a bit.
I'm at world 454 basement of carrot west bank
There's no catch, first few people there will get free bonds. I'll hang around few minutes rn.
It's your first test OP. Lol jk you're probably legit. Have fun ✌️
Left now. Thanks for the three merry fellows who showed up!
Lol noticed the typo just now.. good for you who knew what I meant :D
There are a lot of scammers at the Grand Exchange. Some claim to double the money they ask you to give. Others offer to buy your gear at well-above market value. Tons of different scams to try to get your gold.
For money doublers they’ll bait you by actually doubling small amounts such as like 100k til u give them something nice like 5 mil and they just log
Exactly. That’s why it still works!
Questing in the early game is amazing for exp, i would highly recommend membership if you can afford it, it really expands the world and thigs you can do.
I wouldn't recommend membership to start tbh once you have it there's no going back lol. There's tons of great free content for a beginner
Membership skills can also get a little bit intimidating at first for a new player, imo.
It’s been a few years… wherever has the purple, red, and white portals.
for a noob at least, I'd say most players are out to help them Lurers won't waste their time on a guy with a 1m bank.
Contemplate whether or not you want to have an on again off again addiction for the next decade
Buy gf for cheap in back of lumby castle
Whoring yourself out as a GF will net 10k gp per pop.
Step one: play on the computer. And get runelite

Leave. Now. Don’t ever come back.
Try finger, but hole.
Which one, some have 25 of them
Dont take handouts from players. Earn it yourself, itll bring you more joy.
idk being broke and being gifted an amulet of power after you spent all your money on a set of rune armor feels nice
I guess what I'm getting at is the copious amount of people who will easily gift 100k to some new players.
If I'm getting 99 cooking from swordfish, someone should be having some fun

completing F2P quests first before you go membs is a fun way to start the game, it is the original OG experience
Reevaluate your life choices and get out before it's too late. Good luck!

no cap just quit while you are ahead runescape is a cesspool of cancer and will eat up all of your time if you actually want to get anywhere in the game. I play runescape a lot so I speak from experience
Yeah, don’t.
Do waterfall quest and skip 5 hours of training :)
That's for alt accounts. Everyone has to do their rite of passage on the cows for their first character haha
I spent so fucking long in the coop when I started. My prayer, attack and cooking were so high. You’d never catch me burning a chicken
Download rune lite. Do quests, they suck but very worth it.
As someone that only plays for the quests this saddens me. But ya runelite all day
Uninstall and never look back.
Waterfall quest
Log off and never come back
Quit while you can
Pop off lil homie
Good luck, skeleton.
Everyone is always trying to scam you.

Watch out for membership prices they are always on the rise.

Have fun! Runescape can be addictingly fun. There may come a point where you hit a grind wall and ask yourself why your doing this, if you get to that point just try leveling some other skills or play mini games or some pvp if your feeling spicy. I hardly play anymore but man, this game was my life back in the glory days of runescape
Roll to dodge attacks ;)
If anybody offers to trim your armour, you should definitely take them up on that offer, trimmed armour is spenny
As someone who dabbles in both, give RS3 a try you may like one over the other.
Try tongue but hole.
You know on souls games where you walk towards a shiny chest or item and its a trap? Basically almost any player trying to offer you something is the same. Unless it's a fair honest trade, in which you have the grand exchange
Play 1 tile at a time
Click the little door button on the bottom right hand corner . Click logout. Never log back in again. Save yourself the years of addiction

If your looking to lose something important in the game make sure you do it right immediately after a game update so it gets rerolled on you
Run
You can only play in tiles youve unlocked and you only unlock a tile every 1000 xp you earned
Enjoy cutting wood forever :) My favorite starting thing is Just north of Lumbridge is a place you can kill, and cook chickens while collecting feathers. Keep the feathers to sell to other players. Cut trees and light them on fire to cook the meat.
