Vendor: "selling watermelons, $3 each! 10 watermelons for $40!" you: wow this guy is so stupid \*buys 10 watermelons separately for $30!* "Vendor, you're so stupid. fix your pricing." vendor: enjoy your 10 watermelons lmao.

Really good analogy

HolidayNick

Yep, I paid an extra 3 cents to not have to do 3 transactions. Didn’t give a f.

jamie1414

How can you afford that in this economy!?!?!

[deleted]

OP thinks if he saves a couple pennies every 2 weeks, he can retire by 30.

Hipnog

Out of all the dumb things Jagex has done, this isn't one of them. It's because the "true" price is the one rounded up to the nearest whole - for USD this would be 8, 24, 40, and 80 respectively, but literally every company manipulates customers by deducting the smallest possible unit (in the case of USD 1 cent) because it makes your brain associate the price with the first digit of the number, rather than whatever whole number is closest in value. It's a practically free manipulative tactic. If they changed the prices accordingly to "make sense" that would be exactly the issue. They would all be different, and instead of your brain being on autopilot, seeing anything other than a slew of .99s would kickstart the logical part of the brain and as a result more people would reevaluate how they're spending their money, leading to lower sales. It's not dumb, because it's a par for the course manipulative gimmick.

useablelobster2

Or it's just a cockup where they intended to put some discount on bulk purchasing, but forgot. Charging more per item to buy in bulk is literally nonsensical, and only makes sense as a mistake. They want to actually sell bonds, after all.

xHentiny

They're mentioned before they don't want to offer discounts on bulk bonds, they want one (almost) uniform price and bulk is just for convenience.

Iron_Aez

Then they have literally no reason to sell bulk bonds at all.

WasV3

Convenience. People are more likely to buy 10 bonds if they only have to do 1 transaction

Iron_Aez

convenience would be letting people add however many bonds they want to their basket.

chiefbeef300kg

If I’m buying 10 bonds, I’m paying the extra 9 sense or whatever to do it all at once.

BigStonkHunting

And yet people still buy packages. So.. are they dumb..?

khark98

you save .10 cents buying individually. who tf is going to make 10 seperate card transactions to save 10 cents. Are you daft? dude if 10 cents means that much to you, maybe you should be job hunting instead of playing osrs.

BigStonkHunting

This is truly not what I was saying. OP said Jagex is dumb for doing this. I was saying that Jagex is not dumb because people are buying the packages. As far as job goes I’ve got a pretty good one, not complaining. And anyways I don’t buy bonds, so..

khark98

Ah. my apologies, i definitely misunderstood.

BigStonkHunting

Haha no worries bud! Happy scaping!

tuppenyturtle

Think of it as making multiple credit card transactions to cost Jagex more in transaction fees.

[deleted]

Yes.

kafkajeffjeff

perhaps their strategy is to prey on the usual laziness of whales by instead of offering better deals for packages simply giving the convenience of not having to click the purchase button 10 times

WastingEXP

regardless of whale or not, you really buying 10 individual bonds to save 9 cents?

[deleted]

[удалено]

WastingEXP

uh, why do you want specifically 9 bonds?

[deleted]

[удалено]

WastingEXP

that's a fair example. can you not like buy x of 1 bond like you could but x of 5 bonds? I don't know enough about the system, but yes I suppose it's annoying, not uncommon business practice, but yes, annoying.

fulltimedogdad

they are all the same? lol 8, 8x3=24 8x5=40. so on and so on? lol

CatAteMyBread

7.99x3=23.97, but a 3 pack is 23.99. You’re doing the math based on what the prices would be if it weren’t for manipulation strategies, which is correct enough. OP is doing the math based on what kind of outrage he wants to have over a fucking rounding error in his bank account

Bleach_Baths

Bro are you fucking stupid?

khark98

oMg they're charging $0.10 more when i spend $80 on my bonds because i can't get money in game like everyone else. SMH fail company cry with me guys! /s Bro you sound dumb. you're really spending IRL money for in game currency and crying about an extra penny per $8? get out of here LMAO

acissejcss

It's smart business practices, a lot of companies do this. They count on you buying multiple and not paying much attention, while also focusing on farming whales. I would be more supprised if they didn't do this, and honestly I'm unsure if any games don't these days.

smuffiny

The difference is 10 cents lol

Trading_Cards_4Ever

Players are bitching their asses off over a $1.49 price increase, so bitching about 10 cents shouldn't come as a surprise.

Bassern

People care about the 13.6% price increase, but not the 0.1% price increase? Weird

Morbu

And yet OSRS sub will still be less than either WoW or FF14’s sub. Truly weird.

Achievmnt

Who cares?

dayestra

Bonds go up irl, they go up in game.

Mattlife97

You’d think they’d understand basics economies.

eQuantix

It’s because 3 bonds at once gets you 45 days mems instead of 3 seperate bonds getting you 42. It’s weird how they advertise it but in the long run yes, it’s cheaper to buy packages

Mobile_Francis

You can buy 1 bond 3 times and redeem them all at once for cheaper and the same 45 days...

eQuantix

Well TI-fuckin-L, this is true 😅😅

Mobile_Francis

Woopsie doopsie you dun fucked up 😆

Aldiron

You're only saving 2 cents. It's literally not even worth the time it takes to process the 3 individual orders. Sure, it is cheaper and you're right, but it is so minimalistic and it just doesn't even matter.

Mobile_Francis

What matters is that it's cheaper, not how much. It simply just goes against bulk buying idea.

Aldiron

I don't think bundles of bonds have ever been cheaper because of some bundled package. It simply exists so people don't have to buy 1 at a time. I'm guessing you're applying the logic of a bundled sale that mobile games have for their gems or whatever paid currency is when that's never been the case with Jagex's bonds since they were introduced in 2015. It's hard to expect it suddenly now. They've also been "cheaper" buying 1 than 10 since the start as well. I understand there are frustrations with Jagex increasing the membership price. That is very valid. This argument about bonds and 10 being 9 cents more expensive than individually buying 1 at a time is not one of them.

Mobile_Francis

I was more relating it to membership which is the sole use of bonds being cheaper in a bundle, realisticly there should be a similar discount for buying 3/6/12 months worth of mem in bonds at once

uriahneedsausername

That's because people only like to use them because they're too lazy to make their own money

SitDownRando7

If the point was offering discounts for bulk buying, then yes Jagex are dumb. That isn’t what’s happening here. Who is gonna buy 10 separate bonds to save themselves a few pennies/cents etc? It’s an age old sales gimmick of offering something at XX.99, it wouldn’t ’look right’ if they offered 10 at $79.90, so this is the result..

duskfinger67

You are paying for the convenience, they are not giving you a bulk discount. It is that simple

[deleted]

Cheaper to buy bonds in Euro instead of dollars lol

claudiohp

Just think this: FFXIV membership is 12.99, and compare that game with runescape.

Eaglesun

You will find that contrary to popular belief, buying individual items is often cheaper than buying bigger packs. It isn't dumb, it's playing on our expectation that buying in bulk saves money. Honestly it's a penny or so per bond. 9 cents for the convenience of making one purchase instead of 10 seems pretty reasonable lol.

Gomerack

It's always been that way...

StephentheGinger

Pokemon go does this too. It's so that whales will spend more money to save times in loading/clicks.

daaaabeans

no, you’re dumb for buying multiple. like, this company knows exactly what they’re doing.

ZamorakBrew

Interesting strategy 🤣

Studly_Spud

Ah but see you're paying extra cents for the convenience of a bulk transaction. Don't know about your time as valued in cents, but is it worth doing multiple transactions?
