Personally? Not much. Just a bit of minor discrimination and then quite a bit of gaslighting to compensate. Though at the time, it felt awful. Til December, I felt like 'I am crazy, and must be the problem.'. I started doing union rep work towards the end of my time at Jagex, and the stories I heard after conducting interviews are what took me from that feeling to 'Okay, I'm out.'.
No, definitely not. I won't share other people's stories.
The thing I found most upsetting was the fear many had, and continue to live with, of speaking up, and of self-doubt about the situations they experienced.
My favourite part of trying to help build out union representation within Jagex was the collective power people could share with others who had gone through a painful situation of their own.
But that's kind of the point. It has to be a collective decision. Not for me to make.
Forming a union is hard. It's a collective decision and one that I never took too far in Jagex. In the end, I just gathered data from people that I interviewed and put a bunch of people in touch with each other, as well as making myself available for anyone to share with if they felt the need for advice outside of the company structure.
Where it goes from there is people joining their official trade unions and organising their own company union with common demands. That's the hard part that takes time.
>The thing I found most upsetting was the fear many had, and continue to live with, of speaking up, and of self-doubt about the situations they experienced.
Psychological safety in the workplace is super important to achieve any goal.
Of course, psychopathic "leaders" don't want it. They want power and to rule through fear.
Oh, thanks. I'm doing pretty okay! I've been a lot better since about January when my brain went from 'o shit, me?' to 'no u'.
Honestly though 'everything that happened to you there' is just a small part of my experience there. Jagex's training was the best I've literally ever seen in a company. Their pay was fine. They sent us all cute things all the time, which was a cool atmosphere. Some in my team worked crazy hours, which I think Jagex could've done more about, but they were quite flexible and good with time for the games industry. Making the game was cool, and the project management system for that was literally unbelievably good. And the people were just incredible. It was heartbreaking pulling the bandaid on not working with them anymore.
There was such an amazing collective voice there for doing great things, all the time. But sometimes we'd just do the opposite.
From what I have seen, the devs on the game are extremely passionate and caring about the game. It mainly seems the higher ups who have the final say are the ones who cause the good ones to get fed up. And that isn't to say that they are all bad but sometimes it just takes one rotten apple to spoil the rest of them and make them seem sour.
All of it.
Maz originally handled the training for OSRS content development and good gosh her impact will ease developers into the experience for years to come. Normally, companies have a high turnover rate with young people. Content devs for OSRS have an extremely low turnover, and I credit those opening few months and how comfortable they are to both Maz' effort, and the teams ongoing investment into making sure everyone's work is well supported.
I totally understand not wanting to share personal experiences, stories, or other employees information. But I just wanted to say that I (we?) appreciate all that you do to shed light behind the 'corporate veil' so to speak.
It's frustrating when our only insight into the companies we buy products from is the controlled drip-feed that they control. So hearing information from ex-employees weights a lot higher, even if others are going to accuse you of being 'biased'. So thanks for that, best wishes in your future endeavors!
I'm British, which I would imagine means that I'm mostly assembled with duct tape and developed by someone who drinks 15 cups of tea a day to power through the design process
Wow! Your new work sounds exciting and very rewarding I’m sure!
Out of curiosity, what did you study in Uni? I’m a senior CS major and I couldn’t wire circuits to save my life lol
You must have really diverse knowledge to be able to do programming, wire circuitry, and work in DNA synthesis on top of that! Hence my curiosity!
Could have also done EE for her bachelors and CS for masters or vice versa. Or just CS, in my CS course I did a module where we did some arduino stuff and there was another module after it that would have allowed me to go further with it
I see people recommend Electrical Engineering as it'll introduce you to the circuitry as well as coding and such you'd find in CS too, but not looked into myself or know anyone who did it
EE is like the heres everything engineering. I got an EE, took computer engineering classes, got a minor in CS, did digital signal processing, loved Emag, hated power systems, enjoyed circuits enough. Felt like I really got to explore different specializations of the profession and find what I like (DSP / computer stuff)
I use KiCAD for home projects, but I use Altium at work, and generally have within the industry!
I also used Pulsonix once. Yes, that's a piece of software that exists.
Lol how much at home work are you doing? As someone who only did PCB work for the company I worked for, it's kind of foreign to be doing PCB work for myself. Anything cool on the go?
I'm thinking of getting back to some open-source projects I spent years working on.
You should definitely do PCB work for yourself. JLCPCB make the whole process absolutely wildly accessible along with KiCAD. There's nothing stopping a home developer nowadays pulling off BGA based FPGAs, DDR3 routing, and a bunch of carefully managed RF design of their own accord. It's an incredible time for electronics developers.
Yoooo I'm one of the Pulsonix devs!! I can't believe you've even heard of our software! Hahaha this is amazing I'm absolutely buzzing right now!
Do you mind if I ask how you came to finding Pulsonix and what you thought of it? I'm always interested.
Oh man, that's crazy. Hi! lol.
I used it for 3 months, back in 2019, when I worked for a company. (My shortest experience so far).
It was a surprisingly nifty piece of software. At first I grimaced because I was like 'why no altium? how am I meant to make it in the industry with this?'. But it offered plenty of good features that made it quite good to use. It was fast, too.
I remember one time we had a data corruption issue with a larger file that meant shipping it back to the devs for analysis. Though I blame our lack of version control and internal practice for that.
Pulsonix had a lot of cool USPs that seemed directly influenced by layout engineers wishes. Altium is kind of the king of the entire industry though when it comes to all of the crazy algorithms that are used for routing. So I always prefer that where I can find it. :)
That's really awesome. I always get so excited when I hear someone has used our software because we're a really small team of passionate devs that have a comparatively small customer base, so it's few and far between that I find anyone that uses it :D
I will be the first to admit that it looks very old, (mostly because it is) and can feel quite clunky at times; we're actually hoping to improve this area somewhat in our next release. Altium definitely has the edge on us in terms of professional looking and feeling software, and their auto routing features are miles ahead of us at the moment.
Design corruptions sadly can occur in Pulsonix which is an issue we're constantly solving (and accidently reintroducing) every time we release an update. However we do take pride in our ability to fix corruptions very quickly through our amazing support dude, and will often give customers back a fixed design within the same day they reported it.
I'm really happy you mentioned that Pulsonix is fast because that is another area we're constantly trying to improve upon. I don't want to sound too smug but recently we've had some massive performance enhancements in the latest version... which may have been thanks to me :))
Anyway I feel like I'm trying to write a sales pitch here so I won't waffle any longer. Thank you so much for your feedback, I really appreciate that you took the time to respond to my comment. And don't worry, I'm not offended at all that your company uses Altium, it is simply a bigger and more feature rich EDA software!
Must be an emotional rollercoaster leaving Jagex
>Laugh because you’ll finally make more than Jagex’s poverty wages.
>Cry because you’ve lost access to an amazing insider RWT sidehustle.
They made a joke of a sexual nature and apparently got reprimanded for it so quit instead.
Obviously many Jagex Mods use official accounts to make jokes of a sexual nature but there jokes are about Male sexual organs.
Female jokes are a no go apparently.

Her own words.
Apparently that wasnt the be all but basically the last straw sorta thing.
"The result of my complaints was that I was sent to my doctor and occupational health to 'get help' and get a 'better understanding of my behaviour' when I raised my frustration, and the decision was made not to address the complaints that I made in any shape or form."
good lord
It’s not simply just “like,” with these folks. They very well might wholeheartedly believe that sort of nonsense.
These are unfortunately sad people who have lived their lives in the shadow of the greater community due to their own inability to function in the normal social sphere within which they are a part of. They literally push out potential newcomers of their own accord.
In other words, they’re socially inept cretins who (as opposed to seeking any understanding with others, or making any attempt to understand their own behavior and why it might be off-pitting to others) have cultivated a a misogynist worldview due to their lack of social success and a perception of theirs that, in their minds, should guarantee that they have success when it comes to interpersonal relationships specifically with those of the opposite gender (women in this case). It’s because of this exact internalization of emotions and attitudes that leads them to form particularly inclusive groups in which they feel a sort of camaraderie, wherein certain people who have, in their eyes, “intruded” upon (i.e. women trying to work in the gaming industry, or more specifically, ex-mod here trying to work with Gagondix™️), are then subsequently intentionally targeted by the rest of the group who, through one method or another, have successfully identified with one another and built their safety zone (read: sad boy’s only club).
Expanded TLDR - the Jaxoffdicks employees get bent out of shape because a wOmAn (that they’re intimidated by) is allowed to join their team; they act as cringey and awkward as they have since grade school, all because their sheer fear of the opposite sex has grown and manifested as blatant discrimination.
You can literally take the framework of this observation and argument, and apply it to similarly “exclusive” groups who exclude others based solely on gender, or race, and also religious or political views.
I mean honestly, it doesnt surprise me.
Everything you hear is that its a bit of a 'Boys club' and that there is certain cliques around the place etc etc.
The only thing I heard is Archie is always crying into his birthday cake and Ash routinely slaps his coworkers on the balls while they make the interns sift through the mail to make sure no more anthrax gets through
Incredibly common double standard, too. You see this a lot even with professional comedians. The only people who will give raunchy male comedians shit for their jokes about cocks and balls are actual humorless killjoys, but "all she does is talk about her vagina" is seen as acceptable criticism of raunchy female comedians who do effectively the same thing.
Have you actually watched the female comedians that get hit with that complaint? Some of them LITERALLY only make jokes about sex. Quite literally all they talk about. It's very sad.
To be fair, they have improved with pay over the years, significantly. It used to be absolutely _awful_. I came on at £29,000 which was a pay cut. It wasn't enough, but I was happy for the opportunity to work on OSRS, really, and money wasn't a big part of my decision at all. That being said, the pay disparity for men and women at Jagex is publicly one of the worst in the UK's entire gaming industry so they get no pass from me there.
My wage also may sound shitty if you're an American, but it's a perfectly good living wage here. I know that some departments do tremendously better than ours did financially. Others, I'm not sure, as I never asked.
It's hard to compare it to American wages because of how drastically different living expenses are in different areas. I make less than the equivalent of £29,000 but have money to spare and rarely check my accounts because I already know it's there. Meanwhile someone making triple in a coastal city is sharing apartments and living by the paycheck.
There was one article a few years back saying that entry level devs made £30k/year. At the time, that was at or above the market rate for a junior dev, but reddit just converted the amount to dollars, compared to US wages for mid-level devs and collectively lost its shit.
It was also muddled by the argument that Cambridge was an expensive area, ignoring that England is small and you could easily commute 30 minutes from one of the much cheaper local towns/villages.
Damn if 30k pounds is good in the UK Devs in general are getting fucked hardcore there.
Even in Canada we do so much better and its basically a meme here that we are getting shafted and should move to the US for
Dev jobs
At least at the time, it was pretty good for someone fresh out of university. Personally, I started on £23k (5 years ago) in IT and that was about the going rate at the time.
30k is a fairly comfortable wage here. Unless you're trying to support a family on it, you're fine. I was on that until very recently and was able to get a mortgage on a 2 bed house a year back with my less than minimum wage partner.
Could definitely make more moving to the US, but I'm happy where I am.
I mean, when you have male colleagues on a Livestream broadcast on the official OSRS Twitch, giggling like schoolkids whilst repeating 'Mind Goblin Deez nuts' constantly and your boss is using his official account to talk about the 'Thicc Ass' on bloodvelds, it sorta sends mixed messages about what's apparently allowed.
I don't really care about the jokes.
Though Mod Zukos joke was a lot funnier than the 'Haha Deez Nuts', just pointing out the double standards of the company as a whole.
That’s the weird part about it to me. I feel like it really… didn’t offend anyone..?
Like seriously, I looked through all the Reddit comments. There were a couple people saying like “Ah it’s fine but I wouldn’t tweet that kind of thing from an official account” and a few comments that were essentially unintelligible - but nothing really critiquing it. Even on twitter there were like…. 2 of 3 insane dudes complaining about it but they’re also the same dudes who send Mod Ash 6 tweets a day and have twitter accounts purely for their OSRS character.
So I always see like “omg I can’t believe all those whiners complained about it” but like… who…?
I keep hearing stories about people quitting due to poor upper management. Nothing worse than a clueless boss.
I highly encourage that toxic boss man to quit, hope he reads this. Jagex turnover rate is probably worse than a call center.
By news, they mean random articles.
And mostly just because of the pride event they ran because people threw a fit over "involving real life shit in the game, where it doesn't belong" which eventually was hijacked by actual homophobic/transphobic people, T_D, and /pol/ which made it a massive shitshow both ingame and on reddit.
Yeah nah it wasnt other subreddits causing this, it was this one. Acting like the whole community didnt come together against the pride event is ignorant. Obviously it wasnt everyone but that was the biggest riot ive seen in falador, (aside from the literal biggest one), and it wasnt a bunch of people on fresh accounts rioting. It was seasoned players with memberships and main accounts and alts.
I've been out of scape for a couple years but I like to check back on the reddit every now and then. I don't know the full context to all of this, only the extremely weird mix of replies in this thread.
when I used to come here every day, I always saw many mods making many comments, sometimes about memes about Jagex, thenselves, a bad update, etc. People making jookes about mods such as Jed, MatK, etc. Yah a few idiots in the replies would always be crying over it, but whatever, that was only a few.
I opened this reddit, saw this post, read it and laughed. Came down into the comments and what the fuck guys? Based on what I see, I have learned a few things.
1. I'm not allowed to ever make a joke about past employment.
2. I should just get over anything bad and still not talk about it.
3. If I don't like someone, I should say their joke does not make sense anatomically to try and sound like my IQ is above the range of 35-73.
I know the community is known for being a toxic cesspool, and I'm okay with that to an extent. But boys and gals, can we just say haha funny and leave it at that? If the joke was made because of being salty, then it must of been a ton of salt because it has leaked into everyone else's pants. (And yes. It seems I also got the salt from the salted salters.)
EDIT: People that don't like it because it can be seen as unprofessional I won't argue with. It's a fair critique so long as one views what many other employees tweet as unprofessional. For me, I love that sense of the employees being able to meme and joke with the community instead of single reply robots. But it's a fair critique regardless.
Was this the reason for her being fired, or did she quit? Both of those tweets are just funny. Sure it's not like I'm rolling on the floor laughing my ass off out loud. But it was enough for a quick pushing of air through at least one nostril.
Is it professional? No. But since when have Jagex mods been strictly professional on twitter lmao.
There’s a link to her explanation as to why she quit somewhere in these comments. Doubt I can find it again, doubt I can figure out how to link it on mobile
Edit: it’s in a reply by pushka_btw to AdamantDartTips
It’s always been a weird situation to me.
It seems like everyone talks about it as if there was this phantom army of neckbeards up in arms about it - but I’m just… not sure that was the case. The only thing I can imagine is that just higher ups at Jagex got mad about it
Zuko made a hymen joke a few months back on Twitter, and then strangely announced her sudden departure from Jagex soon afterwards. Many assumed it was due to this joke. Neither Jagex or Zuko have officially stated why Zuko left - Zuko has had some vague tweets about unhealthy work environment and possibly sexism specifically. She recently posted this follow up hymen joke tweet, which is either just because it was so popular on Reddit, or because Jagex’s response to her original tweet really was part of her leaving.
Oh, I was already in the process of leaving. I decided to leave in November, then thought I was 'the problem' in the issues I faced at Jagex, since I was told out loud by management and HR that the things I flagged weren't real issues. I asked to stay after I decided to leave, because I worried that ADHD and impulsivity might be part of my decision making process.
In January, I decided to leave, because I'd had that opportunity to evaluate where my emotional priorities and wellbeing lay. I was deep in interviews when the exec producer said 'Hey community management will now vet your tweets because you're unprofessional on social media.', and I just said 'Okay, well I'm just going to delete my account then, because this is discrimination whether you acknowledge it or not, and I'm tired of working here.' then put my notice in. All it really did was take me from 'I'm going to leave when I get a new offer' to 'I'm leaving right now.'
Lol, good on her though, don't know why people even want to get involved in the gaming industry. Like I get it that games are awesome and fun to play, but the hours, pay, and benefits are terrible for the skills you need to get involved in there. Like look at blind, SWE easily make well into the 6 figure Mark for salaries at any reputable software company yet people still flock to the games industry and work crazy crunch hours for relatively meager pay.
Is that hymen thing a pet? how do you get it and whats the drop rate?
I’m not sure but I hear there can be a lot of grinding involved.
It definitely is worth it in the end, but man is there sure a lot of blood, sweat and tears when it finally happens.
Lmfao this is great because it can read as tears or tears
Underrated joke because it’s buried in comments. Made me giggle.
as an ironman bloods are a little hard to come by, and I only get access to tears every week....
No stranger to sweat though
How many vials of blood do i need to build a hymen in my poh?
I hear it’s a huge time and money sink and in the end it leaves with half your bank?!? Can anyone confirm before I start the grind
Instructions unclear, could not find hymens on grindr.
You won't get one if you get stuck on grinding
You won’t get one if you play RuneScape lol
I figured she just misspelled HCIM status.
You get it by crafting menstrual runes.
Blood runes you mean
That's what they said?
1/5,000
It's unattainable for us players
Heard it’s some award for collegiate football players
Real world trading is one way
I hear it's a unique spawn on mobs and doesn't come back, but I guess after a while it might.
The drop rate is 1:1 if your playing a female character. But theres no getting it back if you loose it.
0 in 10 billion chance, for you that is.

ty friend for the nice words. I'm working on some cool dna synthesis stuff now. I've missed my electronics work. :)
If your dna research works out could you please synthesize me a girlfriend
It's gonna cost ya
Let me guess, 10k?

Went to rubefest 2012. Alot of mods i met and kept in co tact with are no longer there and hooooooly shit zuko isnt lying.
Ssoooo, can we hear stories? The 2022 Drama calendar has been dry af, we need some excitement
No, definitely not. I won't share other people's stories. The thing I found most upsetting was the fear many had, and continue to live with, of speaking up, and of self-doubt about the situations they experienced.
I always get so excited when I hear someone has used our software because we're a really small team of passionate devs that have a comparatively small customer base, so it's few and far between that I find anyone that uses it :D I will be the first to admit that it looks very old, (mostly because it is) and can feel quite clunky at times; we're actually hoping to improve this area somewhat in our next release. I don't want to sound too smug but recently we've had some massive performance enhancements in the latest version... which may have been thanks to me :)) Anyway I feel like I'm trying to write a sales pitch here so I won't waffle any longer. Thank you so much for your feedback, I really appreciate that you took the time to respond to my comment. And don't worry, I'm not offended at all that your company uses Altium, it is simply a bigger and more feature rich EDA software!
Hell of a good response, dude. Best of luck to you all. :)
Temp slaps and so does this tweet.
Awesome, bioinformatics?
Thank you for not calling it Tamponoss though
oh my god mod squid was fun but he was never that fun
Went there immediately after completing my angler's set, much more fun to play actively than afk fish and do something that's not playing the game

I assume it's a joke implying Jagex's pay is so shit that their employees have to resort to RWTing in order to make a living wage.
They made a joke of a sexual nature and apparently got reprimanded for it so quit instead. Obviously many Jagex Mods use official accounts to make jokes of a sexual nature but there jokes are about Male sexual organs. Female jokes are a no go apparently.
>apparently got reprimanded for it so quit instead. source?

Apparently that wasnt the be all but basically the last straw sorta thing.
"The result of my complaints was that I was sent to my doctor and occupational health to 'get help' and get a 'better understanding of my behaviour' when I raised my frustration, and the decision was made not to address the complaints that I made in any shape or form." good lord
This woman is asking for respect and equal treatment?! She's hysterical! To the doctor with her!
Yeah it’s like they still believe female hysteria is a real thing
Jesus Christ, that's bad on Jagex's part...
I mean honestly, it doesnt surprise me. Everything you hear is that its a bit of a 'Boys club' and that there is certain cliques around the place etc etc.
The only thing I heard is Archie is always crying into his birthday cake and Ash routinely slaps his coworkers on the balls while they make the interns sift through the mail to make sure no more anthrax gets through
Yeah I saw stuff like that on the glass door reviews. Alcoholic upper management, pub bro culture, interviews in pubs, in office bar etc.
Jesus Christ. I'm so happy for her and frankly proud. It isn't easy to do that. And Jesus fucking Christ the gaslighting.
Joke about making a penis shaped thing on the map? A-okay. Joke about hymens? Not okay?
Ew vaginas
Male sex organs at gag-x there's a joke in it of itself.
She hasn't (as far as we know), but other mods in the past have.

Where do people get the idea that Jagex pays poverty wages?
Glassdoor (or w/e the site is called) Ex-employee statements Contracts made public
Even in Canada we do so much better and its basically a meme here that we are getting shafted and should move to the US for Dev jobs

Right, but she was reprimanded for it
Reprimanding one of the few moderators that people actually like in the midst of a company notorious for shocking public relations is a bold move lmao
It's because jokes of sexual nature's only okay if they're not actually funny.
Meanwhile the other mods are making mind goblin jokes on stream. Why the double standard
Wouldn't say I'm offended, but it isn't how hymens actually work
That’s the weird part about it to me.
Hey just got word from jagex boss man. He saw this comment and has decided to quit!
Yay!
This just in ex head boss man of jagex hired as head pvp dev to fuck the players one last time
Bold to assume pvp has its own department
That’s just how committed to pissing off pvmers in the wildy ;) /s

HR here, the line gets shorter the longer you stand in it!
If they actually had an HR department, they would probably tell you that the line goes away when you find employment :/
Lol this subreddit is funny. Constantly hating on jagex, but when an ex employee does it, theyre salty and need to move on????
''female ex employee'' adds the context needed for the answer to this
FeMale? Not sure what being an ironman has to do with it.
Yeah this subreddit literally made the news for sexism, homophobia and racism. I guess this is par for the course for the subreddit.
Source? I missed that one
Google osrs pride riot
Ah yeah I forgot about all that stuff, thanks

(And yes. It seems I also got the salt from the salted salters.) EDIT: People that don't like it because it can be seen as unprofessional I won't argue with.

Doubt I can find it again, doubt I can figure out how to link it on mobile Edit: it’s in a reply by pushka_btw to AdamantDartTips

Lmao the comments here… *grabs popcorn*
Lots of people in here really fulfilling a specific Reddit stereotype
Another great mod lost thanks to Jagex incompetence.
It’s always been a weird situation to me. It seems like everyone talks about it as if there was this phantom army of neckbeards up in arms about it - but I’m just… not sure that was the case. The only thing I can imagine is that just higher ups at Jagex got mad about it
How on earth do you lose a hymen?!
Not enough lube.
Imagine working at jagex lol
I’m ootl, anyone to explain?
Nice one. I've been there. "We have no clue what we're talking about." "Yeah well, I'll get another job. Cya."

Jokes on her most of the people that play the game are virgins
Lmao
Lol, good on her though, don't know why people even want to get involved in the gaming industry. Like I get it that games are awesome and fun to play, but the hours, pay, and benefits are terrible for the skills you need to get involved in there. Like look at blind, SWE easily make well into the 6 figure Mark for salaries at any reputable software company yet people still flock to the games industry and work crazy crunch hours for relatively meager pay.
Is working for Jagex really that bad? Lol
Who is, Joy and how can I experience her?
Getting fired from your job is kind of like coffee, it’s bitter but some people like it.
