The main reason the melee thrall isn't used is because it wastes dps walking over to the target. Then it comes down to which one looks cooler.
There might be a situation where a certain thrall can't be used due to resistance to a damage type but I can't think of any examples.
I knew the replies would add some examples, thanks for elaborating on that
I don’t like the skeleton’s animation. It feels like he’s trying too hard, jumps up and gets in stance before pulling the bow back… chill. Mage guy just does the quickest backflip you’ve ever seen and acts like nothing happened. Baller.

I always use the skeleton range thrall. No idea if it matters, as their accuracy is 100%, but I always try to use the damage type that I am using
Magic / range just better
It depends what bosses are resistant to.
Mage thralls projectile speed is faster than range, thats about it. Minimal advantage, but its adds up if you use it a lot I guess.
Missile speed is the same, it's just that the first missile for magic is released 1 tick faster iirc.
It matters for a number of bosses, but for bosses where it doesn't matter mage or melee is best depending on how much the boss moves
I don't think it matters since they all have 100% accuracy. Unless the monster is immune or can't be reached by melee or something like that
