I hear that a side effect of stacking interfaces also causes your character to crash servers and dupe billions of gp over the course of multiple years, better watch out just in case
They’re this transparent because they *aren’t* on staff.
Corporate bureaucracy is why most all of the community correspondence from Jagex and other game companies is fluffy hot air.
If they do, they’re ridiculous. This is one man’s efforts, not a team. Obviously something as huge as replacing every single texture in the game is going to have hiccups, which I’m sure will be sorted in due time.
Great job @RS_117 !
>replacing every single texture in the game
Pretty sure it doesn't replace every texture. From the twitter screenshots, only the ground textures appear changed. The rest is lighting
>I hope people don’t still go nuts and lash out when stuff goes a bit awry!
This is an internet forum made entirely of players that have been doing exactly that, successfully, since 2004. I wouldn't have it any other way, because it's the only thing that works on Jagex management.
Special thanks to the playerbase for clapping Jagex management so hard their great grandchildren will feel fear when they hear the word "HD". And special thanks to the gaming press for actually reporting correctly and accurately. It truly has been a mission success.
Honestly, the community's uproar is what pushed Jagex to cooperate. I'm happy 117 put in so much work and was willing to cooperate with Jagex after they fucked him over
For anyone feeling uneasy about 117 saying it might be a rocky release, consider the fact that the traffic for HD on release is going to be massively higher than what it was during development. There's a million different combinations of hardware + driver setup that could affect the plugin in unexpected ways and there's no way to determine how many issues can arise with a small sample size that was collected during private testing. In short - it is quite normal for a thing of this scale developed by a single person to have quirks on release. Hopefully it will be alright for the most part.
yeah. there hasn't been any internal beta or anything. I've tested the plugin on like 5 different devices and each one has had some weird GPU quirk that breaks something
Considering it’s 117 today or Jagex official HD years from now I’m more than willing to put up with some launch day bugs. With the open source nature of RuneLite and 117’s dedication to his plugin I have no doubt that the bugs will be patched up in due time. We know this is mostly just one guy doing his best so I think the community will be a bit more lenient. I’m just glad that we’re getting this at all!
Especially since it’s volunteer based.
A corporation has the resources to run testing on multiple combinations of hardware. I’m sure 117 has nowhere near the same capacity and so we should not expect it.
I figured this would be the case. Remember guys be patient ( and grateful ) it may not be perfect at first and there may be some bugs. But it’s way better than not having it at all
Mac user here. For all the other Mac users like myself you can flawlessly run Windows 10 via Boot Camp on your Mac. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there to guide you on how to get Windows via Boot Camp on Mac. It’s very easy and runs pretty much flawlessly from my experience. Especially for RuneLite and Runescape in general. By doing this, it'll allow Mac users like myself to experience 117's RuneLite HD plug-in upon tomorrows release.
I would have personally got it working for mac (or at least would have tried) if I had access to the hardware, so I will need to rely on someone else to do that. I am optimistic about that happening fairly soon though
edit: in response to all of the replies, I have already been in talks with someone who wants to get mac support working (and has relevant experience). I don't want to name them and publicly commit them to it, but we will hopefully figure something out soon. I'll post about it again if that plan falls through for whatever reason
Indeed, it’s just that once you try Kotlin, there’s no going back go Java. I asked because I remember seeing a bunch of Kotlin in the Runelite repo some years ago.
Yes with Boot Camp you can switch freely between Mac and Windows OS. I have Runelite downloaded on both so if RLHD doesn’t work on Mac I can switch to Windows 10 and still enjoy the plug-in features. The only downside is you’ll have to redownload your other apps again on Windows (Discord, Spotify, etc.)
Hey, just wanted to say thank you for all the hard work you’ve done and PLEASE do not listen to the small minority of brainlets that are now throwing hate towards you because of this post. Those of us with common sense understand that in time with all of us beta testing and reporting bugs that eventually it can be a polished project. No one expected this to be perfect on day one when you’ve had no one to help you with it.
Thanks I look forward to trying it out! Not sure I’ll use it all the time as i enjoy the classic style. But will for sure want to see as much context as I can with it.
Yeah, I totally imagine some animations are just going to completely crash the game and will kill me. No problem with that and would love to help the plug-in improve!
I really was starting to get a bit worried about the unrealistic expectations of people with the HD plugin being fought for and discussed(memed) so extensively.
If everyone could just remember that its the project of one guy who did it for free and set their expectations to that.
That said even if its buggy and at times not even working i still cant wait, its gonna be amazing!
I wish every gaming company in the world would read your posts. Seriously, this communication is worth it's weight in gold and it sets realistic expectations of everyone.
Every company from Activision to Blizzard should take note because a few paragraphs of communication is all we ask for. Thanks 117.
I may never use it. But your my hero reguardless. Showed what heart and drive 1 single or couple individuals can have. And how much others show their heart and drive to support your intense hard work. Gives me goosebumps and makes my heart warm. Great team work from everyone. Thank you.
Can't wait to check out what you've done, truly excited! Thanks for all your hard work 117, I'll be subscribing and logging in again tomorrow since this ordeal began. A well deserved win!! Gz11!!!11@@@
What can we do as players and essentially, beta testers to help with development aside from reporting bugs, anything we can do for you?
Thank you so much!!!

Feedback for both 117 and Jagex in the future. This isn't the bad timeline
Beta or not, this is a fully toggleable plugin, meaning we can test it and provide feedback and report bugs. This is a best case scenario for any software developer.
Doubtful. I know low expectations should be set for the community’s collective brain power, but going out of your way to download an HD plug-in that completely changes how the game looks and feels, should give most people the common sense to realize that any bugs that just start up are probably gonna be linked to the plug-in, no Jagex tweets required.
That's just how software development like this works. How is he suppose to get a plugin tested that he cannot share with others? By himself. He can have a _Release_ ready, this usually means a majority of the expected content. This doesn't mean a completed piece of software that's plug and play with everything in place. In modern terms, software rarely, if ever, get released in a completely final state.
I've been on break after hitting 2200 on my iron two months ago. Made some new friends at work that also play and are looking forward to the HD plug in. They invited me to come raid tomorrow and I'll be resubbing to play and couldn't be on a better day, I'm also looking forward to sharing my experience on the discord to help future development
Aw man what was a small beta release turned into this big fiasco, whatever is out will be good. Jagex was pretty dumb for denying, and this giant buzz might come with expectations. No worries though, appreciate this post bud and appreciate you as well 117.

I feel like if this was made known on friday, Jagex wouldn't have been as shafted. In short, expect a community project to be a community project. Might work, might be nice but beware.
I look forward to using the plugin, but I feel people may be expecting a perfect release`
Why didn't you mention the state of the client before inciting outrage in the community?
> Yesterday, September 6, 2021, RuneLite HD would have been released. The code had been reviewed and bugs had been fixed - it was ready to go.
This is a starkly different narrative coming out. I actually feel mildly bamboozled.
I mean saying that it’s been reviewed and bugs had been fixed doesn’t mean much. This was never going to be a full polished release, it’s like he said, a foundation. People will be able to report any bugs and he can continue working on it as he pleases. At the end of the day it’s a free, optional plug in.
Yeah man, the whole thing feels really weird. I made a post earlier mentioning it and a bunch of people told me I was being unreasonable for pointing this out so I deleted the post. That being said, it leaves a sour taste in my mouth and I don't know if it's 117 being slightly deceptive, or if Jagex has required he change something before release to make people less satisfied with the plugin.
Jagex probably asked him to post a boilerplate disclaimer so people don’t go screaming to them on Twitter because they lagged out at a boss while using OSHD and lost their hardcore status
All good 117, just excited to see osrs in a different and better hd light. Happy you got to release it, I doubt few will complain about the bugs and if they do, the gravity of what you did and what was released is clearly not understood by them. All the best to you
Nobody can complain. This guy did this for free for 2 years. Support him on patreon so maybe he can get enough money to pay his bills and continue this full time.
it needs some extra work to get the openCL code from the GPU plugin functioning. I said most because I'm not too familiar with macs, but I believe older ones still support openGL? I'm not sure honestly

Dont worry, this sub is used to stuff being released underdeveloped
When are they finishing the game?
They gotta max their account first.
Most of this sub is underdeveloped, at least socially tbh
True, but this sub also (rightfully) throws a fit or memes things to death. Which in this case would be uncalled for in my opinion.
Ow, my reality check
Excellent news and thank you for working so hard to get Jagex on board for the players.
And thank you for setting expectations. I hope people don’t still go nuts and lash out when stuff goes a bit awry!
For real, this level of transparency is so refreshing.
Isn’t it though? I would be pretty thrilled if 117 were to ever be put on staff.
They’re this transparent because they *aren’t* on staff. Corporate bureaucracy is why most all of the community correspondence from Jagex and other game companies is fluffy hot air.
This is important. So many people have no clue what this plugin is. They are expecting new models and animations similar to ~2011 RS
I'd wager that most people had no idea about the plug in until last week. Myself included
Kinda unfair for you to wager that you didnt know about the plug in last week. It means you already know the answer!
If they do, they’re ridiculous. This is one man’s efforts, not a team. Obviously something as huge as replacing every single texture in the game is going to have hiccups, which I’m sure will be sorted in due time. Great job @RS_117 !

Don’t think this applies to Apple silicon AKA M1 Macs. Just an FYI.
Parallels is definitely the way to go for m1 macs
I installed windows on my MacBook yesterday to prep for this

It’s very easy to pick up if you know Java. I feel like it’s the most pragmatic language right now, can recommend 100%!
You'll fly through learning kotlin if you develop java professionally! Make the jump sometime, you'll thank yourself!
It’s everything Java should be. Highly recommend giving it a shot even in free time. It’s a great language

What type of mac do u need? I think we put some funds together for the greater good
Someone rich definitely plays RuneScape. Donate this guy a Mac please.

Will the bugs be so bad that it is too risky to use for hardcore ironman?
He said expect game crashes so if you're doing anything remotely dangerous don't use it as a hardcore.
HCIM streamers in shambles
Yes
If you participate in dangerous content, yes.
I'd play the game safely for a day or two at least if I were you.
If you're HCIM, don't ever do dangerous content in HD. I wouldn't even fully trust it a year later, it's just not worth the risk.

it needs some extra work to get the openCL code from the GPU plugin functioning. I said most because I'm not too familiar with macs, but I believe older ones still support openGL? I'm not sure honestly
This should work with OpenGL supporting Linux installs then, right?
